Assembly Election 2024 live: Today marked the start of voting for the 92 assembly seats up for grabs in the state elections in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. Elections for the first phase of the Lok Sabha are being held concurrently with the 60 Assembly seats in Arunachal and 32 seats in Sikkim. 8,92,694 voters in Arunachal Pradesh, where border area development and infrastructure are considered to be important poll issues, will determine the fate of 133 candidates vying for 50 assembly seats and 14 for the two Lok Sabha seats.
In the Arunachal West Lok Sabha seat, former Congress chief minister Nabam Tuki will face off against Union minister Kiren Rijiju.
In Sikkim, chief minister and SKM supremo Prem Singh Tamang, former CM and SDF chief Pawan Kumar Chamling are among the 146 candidates in the fray for the assembly seats. An estimated 4.64 lakh electorate, comprising 2,32,381 male voters and 2,31,545 females will be eligible to exercise their franchise in the state.

- Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar on Thursday issued an appeal to voters to exercise their democratic rights.
- Reminding the significance of each vote, Kumar said that there have been instances when one vote has mattered in a critical contest.
- “In the last two years, the Election Commission and its employees have worked hard to ensure a peaceful and simple voting experience. I would like to appeal to all to cast their vote,” he said in a video message.

- The polling on Friday will kick off the world’s largest democratic exercise that will span the next six weeks and see nearly a billion citizens exercise their franchise.
- In terms of span, this will be the longest general election since India’s maiden Lok Sabha polls which lasted four months – from October 1951 to February 1952.
Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim Assembly Elections Latest News
- Voting for the 60 Assembly seats in Arunachal and 32 seats in Sikkim has commenced.
- Voter turnout was recorded at 4.95% in Arunachal Pradesh and 6.63% in Sikkim till 9:00 am.
- Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu urged all “eligible voters to exercise their franchise in large numbers”.
- “As Arunachal Pradesh votes today to elect representatives for the eighth State Legislative Assembly and 18th Lok Sabha, I appeal to all eligible voters to exercise their franchise in large numbers. Let us overwhelmingly participate in this vibrant festival to enrich democracy. I also call upon the youth and first-time voters to take part in the elections,” the Arunachal CM wrote in an X post.
- The BJP won 41 seats in Arunachal Pradesh in the 2019 Assembly polls, and subsequently, seven MLAs of other parties, including the Janata Dal-United, joined the BJP.
- In the 60-member Assembly in Arunachal Pradesh, 59 seats are reserved for the Scheduled Tribes (ST).
- The results of Assembly elections in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim will be announced on June 2.
- In Sikkim, chief minister and SKM supremo Prem Singh Tamang, former CM and SDF chief Pawan Kumar Chamling are among the 146 candidates in the fray for the 32-member Assembly.
- The BJP has an informal alliance with the ruling SKM in Sikkim, whose government it supports from the outside.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday took to microblogging site X and urged voters of 102 constituencies across 21 states which are set to go to polls today, to “exercise their franchise in record numbers”.
- “The 2024 Lok Sabha elections commence today! As 102 seats across 21 States and UTs go to the polls, I urge all those voting in these seats to exercise their franchise in record numbers. I particularly call upon the young and first-time voters to vote in large numbers. After all, every vote counts and every voice matters!” the prime minister said.
