Smuggled people in mattresses, freezers: Indian-origin man found guilty in UK

A group of six human traffickers, including 67-year-old Gurprit Singh Peter Kahlon of Indian heritage, has been convicted of smuggling hundreds of Iraqi-Kurdish migrants into the United Kingdom. The group charged migrants and transported them to the UK by disguising them in vehicles carrying mattresses and refrigerated vans.

A 67-year-old Indian-origin man, Gurprit Singh Peter Kahlon, and five others have been found guilty of smuggling hundreds of migrants into the UK. The gang of six smuggled hundreds of Iraqi-Kurdish migrants from mainland Europe into the UK, charging between £5,000 and £10,000 per person by hiding them in vehicles, including refrigerated lorry trailers, and among mattresses. They also tricked legitimate drivers into unwittingly transporting migrants by secretly loading people into their vehicles.

The Teesside-based human traffickers — Gurprit Kahlon, 67, Muhammad Zada, 43, Pareiz Abdullah, 41, Khalid Mahmud, 50, Marek Sochanic, 39, and Bestoon Moslih, 41 — were found guilty on July 11 after a six-week trial.

Kahlon, a key associate of the gang’s figurehead, 43-year-old Muhammad Zada, was responsible for recruiting drivers and facilitating the movement of people into the country.

Footage captured by National Crime Agency (NCA) officers shows Zada inspecting a campervan hired by Kahlon to transport migrants from France.

The gang was involved in several smuggling operations, including the use of a campervan, refrigerated lorries carrying fruit and vegetables, vans with bicycle boxes, and shipments of mattresses to transport migrants from France and Belgium to the UK.

The gang is believed to have facilitated the illegal entry of hundreds of migrants into the UK.

Kahlon pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to facilitate breaches of immigration law at earlier court hearings, according to the NCA.

Zada and Sochanic were convicted in their absence, having absconded before the trial began. The police are working to locate the pair and bring them into custody.

Sentencing for all six men is set for September 20.

“Our extensive investigation has seen us uncover and dismantle a major people smuggling network with ambitions of bringing hundreds if not thousands, of people into the UK illegally,” stated NCA Branch Commander Martin Clarke.

Chad Gable Poised For New Stable After Another Loss To Sami Zayn

Sami Zayn leaves Saudi Arabia as Intercontinental Champion after pinning Bronson Reed in a triple threat match. But arguably the most interesting narrative to emerge from this WWE King and Queen of the Ring battle was that Gable’s Alpha Academy stablemate Otis eventually—and unintentionally—cost Gable his latest crack at the title.

Gable has failed multiple times in his attempt to defeat Zayn, and this time it was an unintentional clothesline from Otis that allowed Zayn to land the Helluva Kick on Reed and retain his title. That was the most recent event in the slow implosion of Gable’s present stable.

What’s the next step? Gable is a near lock to quarrel with Otis, but recent sources indicate that Gable is already planning to form another stable. “The ground is also quite unstable at the moment and it is at risk of triggering further landslide,” said Justine McMahon, the country co-ordinator of Care Australia, one of the humanitarian aid agencies on the ground.

“We’ve decided to stay out for now to allow the authorities time to properly assess the situation to conduct the rescue and recovery operations.”

Earlier, an official for the UN’s migration agency in the country had also described to the BBC the difficulties around the rescue.

Serhan Aktoprak from the International Organization for Migration said there were a number of challenges facing teams trying to recover bodies, including reluctance by some grieving relatives to let heavy machinery near their loved ones.

Instead, he said, “people are using digging sticks, spades, large agricultural forks to remove the bodies buried under the soil”.

Another X user by the name of totoro8201 claims to have spotted the same lights from Nariishi beach, located on the same stretch of coastline just 12.7km east of Daisen, according to Google Maps.

The user posted this in a reply to Maashii’s tweet:

Netizens replying to the post pointed out that the scene resembled something out of the popular Japanese anime “Neon Genesis Evangelion”.

All the same, the lights have nothing to do with angels or extraterrestrials. Rather, they have to do with fish.

Fish-attracting light pillars

Maashii told Hint-pot that this phenomenon is known in Japan as “Isaribi Kochu”.

According to Japan Today, “Isaribi Kochu” literally means “fish-attracting light pillars”. The article was reporting on a similar “Light pillar of light” sighting back in 2015.

Japan Today explained that “Isaribi”, literally “fishing fires”, refers to the lights that are placed on fishing boats to attract larger catches. The practice is fairly common in squid fishing.

At 37,000 feet, a Singapore Airlines flight travelling from London to Singapore experienced an abrupt and intense turbulence. Together with 18 staff members, the Boeing 777-300ER aircraft was carrying 211 passengers.

There were discrepancies in the number of injured people reported by the airline and Samitivej Hospital. The airline stated that 18 passengers were hospitalised and 12 were receiving treatment in hospitals.

“On behalf of Singapore Airlines, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased. We are very sorry for the traumatic experience that everyone on board SQ321 went through,” Mr Phong said.

He said that Singapore Airlines is committed to providing all necessary support and assistance to the passengers and crew members who were on board SQ321. He also said that they are also “fully cooperating” with the relevant authorities on the investigations.

According to Mr. Phong, 143 of the SQ321 passengers and crew members who were able to travel arrived in Singapore this morning on a relief flight. According to him, six crew members and an additional 79 passengers from SQ321, together with others who were on the flight and were receiving medical attention, are still in Bangkok.

“Please be assured that Singapore Airlines is here to help and support you during this difficult time,” added Mr. Phong.

Singapore ministry said the estimated number of Covid-19 cases nearly doubled from 13,700 in previous week to 25,900 in the week of May 5 to 11.

The Singapore government is closely monitoring a new surge in Covid-19 infections, as the estimated weekly case count almost doubled in the week ending May 11. Health minister Ong Ye Kung on Saturday advised the wearing of masks again.

Singapore’s ministry of health stated that the government was closely tracking the trajectory of the new wave. According to the ministry, the estimated number of the Covid-19 cases nearly doubled from 13,700 in the previous week to 25,900 in the week of May 5 to 11.

The ministry reported that average daily Covid-19 hospitalisations increased from 181 to approximately 250 during the same period. To preserve hospital bed capacity, public hospitals have been instructed to reduce non-urgent elective surgeries and transfer appropriate patients to care facilities.

“We are at the beginning part of the wave where it is steadily rising,” health minister Ong Ye Kung said, according to a Straits Times report.

He added, “The wave should peak in the next two to four weeks, which means between mid- and end-June.”

Ong also encouraged those at highest risk of disease—including individuals aged 60 and above, medically vulnerable individuals, and residents of aged care facilities—to get an additional dose of the Covid-19 vaccine if they have not been vaccinated in the past 12 months.

Speaking about social restrictions Ong said there were no plans for any form of social restrictions as of now, as Covid-19 is treated as an endemic disease in Singapore. The minister added that imposing additional measures would be a last resort.

Ong, however, accepted the fact that Singapore, being a transport and communications hub, will be one of the cities that experience a wave of Covid-19 earlier than others.

“So Covid-19 is just something that we have to live with. Every year, we should expect one or two waves,” he said.
