Finland remains world's happiest country for seventh straight year

In Short

  • Finland tops UN’s World Happiness Report for seventh year
  • US, Germany drop out of top 20; Costa Rica, Kuwait enter
  • Younger generations are happier than older ones, except in North America, Australia, and New Zealand

Finland remained the world’s happiest country for a seventh straight year in an annual UN-sponsored World Happiness Report published on Wednesday.

And Nordic countries kept their places amongst the 10 most cheerful, with Denmark, Iceland and Sweden trailing Finland.

Afghanistan, plagued by a humanitarian catastrophe since the Taliban regained control in 2020, stayed at the bottom of the 143 countries surveyed.

For the first time since the report was published more than a decade ago, the United States and Germany were not among the 20 happiest nations, coming in 23rd and 24th respectively.

In turn, Costa Rica and Kuwait entered the top 20 at 12 and 13.

The report noted the happiest countries no longer included any of the world’s largest countries.

“In the top 10 countries only the Netherlands and Australia have populations over 15 million. In the whole of the top 20, only Canada and the UK have populations over 30 million.”

The sharpest decline in happiness since 2006-10 was noted in Afghanistan, Lebanon and Jordan, while the Eastern European countries Serbia, Bulgaria and Latvia reported the biggest increases.

The happiness ranking is based on individuals’ self-assessed evaluations of life satisfaction, as well as GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity and corruption.

Growing inequality

Jennifer De Paola, a happiness researcher at the University of Helsinki in Finland, told AFP that Finns’ close connection to nature and healthy work-life balance were key contributors to their life satisfaction.

In addition, Finns may have a “more attainable understanding of what a successful life is”, compared to for example the United States where success is often equated with financial gain, she said.

Finns’ strong welfare society, trust in state authorities, low levels of corruption and free healthcare and education were also key.

“Finnish society is permeated by a sense of trust, freedom, and high level of autonomy,” De Paola said.

This year’s report also found that younger generations were happier than their older peers in most of the world’s regions — but not all.

In North America, Australia and New Zealand, happiness among groups under 30 has dropped dramatically since 2006-10, with older generations now happier than the young.

By contrast, in Central and Eastern Europe, happiness increased substantially at all ages during the same period, while in Western Europe people of all ages reported similar levels of happiness.

Happiness inequality increased in every region except Europe, which authors described as a “worrying trend”.

The rise was especially distinct among the old and in Sub-Saharan Africa, reflecting inequalities in “income, education, health care, social acceptance, trust, and the presence of supportive social environments at the family, community and national levels,” the authors said.

US Senator ‘deeply concerned’ about CAA impact on Muslims in India

Voicing concern over the CAA rollout in India, US Senator Ben Cardin stated that it is vital for cooperation between Washington and New Delhi to be rooted in shared values of safeguarding human rights, regardless of religion.

  • US lawmaker expresses concern over India’s CAA enforcement
  • Senator Ben Cardin speaks on potential impact on Muslim community
  • Senator says India-US cooperation needs to be based on shared values.

An influential US lawmaker has voiced apprehension regarding the Indian governmentā€™sĀ issuance of rules for the enforcement of the Citizenship Amendment ActĀ (CAA), stating that it is vital for cooperation between Washington and New Delhi to be rooted in shared values of safeguarding human rights irrespective of religion.

“I am deeply concerned by the Indian government’s decision to notify its controversial Citizenship Amendment Act, particularly the law’s potential ramifications on India’s Muslim community. Making matters worse is the fact that it is being pushed during the holy month of Ramadan,” stated Senator Ben Cardin, chairman of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

“As the US-India relationship deepens, it is critically important that our cooperation is based on our shared values of protecting the human rights of all persons, regardless of religion,” he continued.

The lawmaker’s remarks coincide withĀ Hindu American groups’ endorsement of the rollout of CAA.

Last week, theĀ US State Department voiced concerns over the notification of CAA. Spokesperson Matthew Miller said the Biden administration would be closely monitoring the implementation of the contentious law.

ā€œRespect for religious freedom and equal treatment under the law for all communities are fundamental democratic principles,” Miller had said.

India promptly criticised the US State Department’s critique of the CAA as “misinformed and unwarranted.”

The Centre implemented the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, last week, facilitating citizenship for undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who arrived in India before December 31, 2014.

Additionally, the government issued a press statement asserting that Indian Muslims need not fear as the CAA will not affect their citizenship and is unrelated to the community, which enjoys equal rights as Hindus.

Putin back for 5th term as Russian President after landslide election win

President Vladimir Putin won a record post-Soviet landslide in Russia’s election on Sunday, cementing his already tight grip on power.

In Short

  • Putin wins Russian presidential election with 87.8 per cent of votes
  • Election amid conflict with Ukraine and crackdown on opposition in Russia
  • Three ‘token’ candidates were allowed to contest against Putin

President Vladimir Putin won a record post-Soviet landslide in Russia’s election on Sunday, cementing his already tight grip on power.

The outcome means Putin, 71, is set to embark on a new six-year term that will see him overtake Josef Stalin and become Russia’s longest-serving leader for more than 200 years if he completes it.

Putin won 87.8% of the vote, the highest ever result in Russia’s post-Soviet history, according to an exit poll by pollster the Public Opinion Foundation (FOM), news agency Reuters reported.

Communist candidate Nikolai Kharitonov finished second with just under 4%, newcomer Vladislav Davankov third, and ultra-nationalist Leonid Slutsky fourth, partial results suggested.

Putin, in a victory speech in Moscow, told supporters that he would prioritise resolving tasks associated with what he called Russia’s “special military operation” in Ukraine and would strengthen the Russian military.

“We have many tasks ahead. But when we are consolidated – no matter who wants to intimidate us, suppress us – nobody has ever succeeded in history, they have not succeeded now, and they will not succeed ever in the future,” said Putin.

The election took place amid attacks within Russia by Ukrainian missiles and drones, which have killed several people.

Inspired by opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who died in an Arctic prison last month, thousands of opponents protested at noon against Putin at polling stations inside Russia and abroad.

Putin told reporters he regarded Russia’s election as democratic and said the Navalny-inspired protest against him had had no effect on the election’s outcome.

When asked by NBC, a US TV network, whether his re-election was democratic, Putin criticised the US political and judicial systems.

“The whole world is laughing at what is happening (in the United States),” he said. “This is just a disaster, not a democracy.”

“…Is it democratic to use administrative resources to attack one of the candidates for the presidency of the United States, using the judiciary among other things?” he asked, making an apparent reference to four criminal cases against Republican candidate Donald Trump.

Voting took place over three days at polling stations across Russiaā€™s 11 time zones, in illegally annexed regions of Ukraine and online. While polls closed Sunday night in Russia, voting continued at some embassies around the world.

Despite tight controls, several dozen cases of vandalism at polling stations were reported across the voting period.

Several people were arrested, including in Moscow and St Petersburg, after they tried to start fires or set off explosives at polling stations, while others were detained for throwing green antiseptic or ink into ballot boxes.

The OVD-Info group that monitors political arrests said that 80 people were arrested in 20 cities across Russia on Sunday.

Biden, Trump clinch party nominations; stage set for presidential re-match

US President Joe Biden and his predecessor Donald Trump have clinched nominations from their respective parties, setting the stage for a presidential re-match in the November elections.

In Short

  • Joe Biden and Donald Trump secure presidential nominations in low-key primaries.
  • Voter dissatisfaction with both candidates evident in primary reactions.
  • Their re-match is the first featuring two US presidents since 1912.

US President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump clinched their partiesā€™ presidential nominations on Tuesday with decisive victories in a slate of low-profile primaries, setting up a general election rematch that many voters do not want.

The outcome of contests across Georgia, Mississippi and Washington state was never in doubt.

Neither Biden, a Democrat, nor Trump, a Republican, faced major opposition. But the magnitude of their wins gave each man the delegate majority he needed to claim his partyā€™s nomination at the national conventions this summer.

Not even halfway through the presidential primary calendar, Tuesday marked a crystallising moment for a nation uneasy with its choices in 2024.

There is no longer any doubt that the fall election will feature a rematch between two flawed and unpopular presidents.

At 81, Biden is already the oldest president in US history, while the 77-year-old Trump is facing decades in prison as a defendant in four criminal cases.

Their re-match, the first featuring two US presidents since 1912, will almost certainly deepen the nationā€™s searing political and cultural divides over the eight-month grind that lies ahead.

In a statement,Ā Biden celebrated the nominationĀ while casting Trump as a serious threat to democracy.

Trump, Biden said, ā€œis running a campaign of resentment, revenge, and retribution that threatens the very idea of Americaā€.

He continued, ā€œI am honoured that the broad coalition of voters representing the rich diversity of the Democratic Party across the country have put their faith in me once again to lead our party ā€” and our country ā€” in a moment when the threat Trump poses is greater than ever.ā€

On the eve of Tuesdayā€™s primaries, Trump acknowledged that Biden would be the Democratic nominee, even as he seized on the Presidentā€™s age.

ā€œI assume heā€™s going to be the candidate,ā€ Trump said of Biden on CNBC. ā€œIā€™m his only opponent other than life, life itself.ā€

Both candidates dominated Tuesdayā€™s primaries in swing-state Georgia, deep-red Mississippi and Democratic-leaning Washington. Voting was taking place later in Hawaiiā€™s Republican caucus.

Despite their tough talk, the road ahead will not be easy for either presumptive nominee.

Trump is facing 91 felony counts in four criminal cases involving his handling of classified documents and his attempt to overturn the 2020 election, amongst other alleged crimes.

Heā€™s also facing increasingly pointed questions about his policy plans and relationships with some of the worldā€™s most dangerous dictators.

On March 8, Trump privately met Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor OrbƔn, who has rolled back democracy in his country.

Biden, who would be 86 years old at the end of his next term, is working to assure a sceptical electorate that heā€™s still physically and mentally able to thrive in the worldā€™s most important job. Voters in both parties are unhappy with his handling of immigration and inflation.

And heā€™s dealing with additional dissension within his partyā€™s progressive base, furious that he hasnā€™t done more to stop Israelā€™s war against Hamas in Gaza.

Activists and religious leaders in Washington encouraged Democrats to vote ā€œuncommittedā€ to signal their outrage.

In Seattle, 26-year-old voter Bella Rivera said they hoped their ā€œuncommittedā€ vote would serve as a wakeup call for the Democratic Party.

ā€œIf you really want our votes, if you want to win this election, youā€™re going to have to show a little bit more support of Palestinian liberation ā€” thatā€™s something thatā€™s very important to us,and cease funds to Israel,ā€ said Rivera, a preschool teacher who uses they/them pronouns.

Almost 3,000 miles away in Georgia, retiree Donna Graham said she would have preferred another Republican nominee over Trump, but she said thereā€™s no way sheā€™d ever vote for Biden in the general election.

ā€œHe wasnā€™t my first choice, but heā€™s the next best thing,ā€ Graham said of Trump. ā€œItā€™s sad that itā€™s the same old matchup as four years ago.ā€

Haiti PM Ariel Henry resigns amid pressure, chaos

Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry has resigned amid pressure and chaos in the Caribbean nation.

In Short

  • Ariel Henry, Haiti’s PM, has resigned
  • Henry took over in 2021 after President Jovenel Moise’s assassination
  • Resignation followed regional leaders’ meeting in Jamaica

Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry has resignedĀ amid pressure and chaos in the Caribbean nation. He became the Prime Minister in 2021 following the assassination of the country’s last president, Jovenel Moise.

Henry has issued his resignation as the Caribbean nation’s head of government, the chair of the Caribbean Community said on Monday.

“We acknowledge his resignation upon the establishment of a transitional presidential council and naming of an interim prime minister,” said Caribbean Community chair Irfaan Ali, also the president of Guyana, thanking Henry for his service to Haiti.

Henry travelled to Kenya late last month to secure the leadership of a UN-backed international security mission to help police fight armed gangs, but a drastic escalation of violence in the capital Port-au-Prince during his absence left him stranded in the US territory of Puerto Rico.

Henry’s resignation comes as regional leaders met earlier on Monday in nearby Jamaica to discuss the framework for a political transition, which the US urged last week to be “expedited” while gangs called for Henry to step down.

Regional officials have been engaged in talks involving members of Haiti’s political parties, the private sector, civil society and religious groups aimed at establishing the transition council that would pave the way to the first elections since 2016.

Henry, who many Haitians consider corrupt, had repeatedly postponed elections, saying security must first be restored.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken had earlier on Monday called for the creation of a “broad-based, inclusive, independent presidential college”.

This council would be tasked with meeting the “immediate needs” of Haitian people, enabling the security mission’s deployment and creating security conditions necessary for free elections, Blinken said.

Real or AI? Kate Middleton’s photo pulled by agencies for being ‘manipulated

A photo of Kate Middleton and her children released by Kensington Palace for Mother’s Day has been pulled by several major news agencies amid concerns it may have been manipulated.

News agencies have taken down this photo of Princess of Wales Kate with her children for being “manipulated”.

In Short

  • Kensington Palace’s image of Kate Middleton and kids questioned for authenticity
  • Social media users suggested image appears edited or AI-generated
  • Major photo agencies withdraw images citing potential manipulation.

Several major news agencies have withdrawn an image distributed by Kensington Palace, featuring Kate Middleton and her children, amid claims that the photo has been manipulated.

On Sunday,Ā the palace released a photo in celebration of Motherā€™s DayĀ in the UK, showing the 42-year-old Princess of Wales smiling at the camera while her three children ā€” Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis ā€” stood around her. The palace stated that the photo was taken by Prince William, 41, earlier in the week at the family’s residence in Windsor.

However, users on social media questioned the authenticity of the image, with some suggesting that it appeared edited or generated by AI.

In response to these concerns, multiple photo agencies have decided to pull the image released by Kensington Palace.

The Associated Press noted upon closer inspection that “it appears that the source has manipulated the image.” Similarly, AFP withdrew the photo, citing “an editorial issue,” and instructed that it “may no longer be used in any manner” on online platforms.

Reuters picture editors pointed out a discrepancy in the alignment of the sleeve of Kateā€™s daughterā€™s cardigan, indicating potential alterations to the image.

This photograph marked the first officially released image of theĀ princess since her abdominal surgery in January. Its release followed weeks of speculation and social media conspiracy theories surrounding her health and whereabouts.

Kensington Palace has yet to issue a statement on the controversy surrounding Kate Middleton’s photo.

Tesla Germany halts work as Elon Musk calls suspected arson ‘extremely dumb’

Tesla’s European Gigafactory near Berlin has halted work until further notice after what CEO Elon Musk called an “extremely dumb” suspected arson attack nearby left it without power.

In Short

  • Power outage due to suspected arson nearby Tesla’s Berlin factory halts work at the gigafactory
  • The outage will cost Tesla estimated losses in the high hundreds of millions of euros, with 1,000 vehicles left unfinished on Tuesday alone
  • Emergency services have extinguished the blaze, and power to the surrounding communities has mostly been restored.

Tesla’s European Gigafactory near Berlin has halted work until further notice after what CEO Elon Musk called an “extremely dumb” suspected arson attack nearby left it without power on Tuesday.

The attack southeast of the German capital set an electricity pylon close to the site ablaze, but the fire did not spread to the Tesla facility – the US electric vehicle maker’s first manufacturing plant in Europe.

It has, however, shuttered production at least until early next week, the company said.

The outage will cost Tesla estimated losses in the high hundreds of millions of euros, with 1,000 vehicles left unfinished on Tuesday alone.

A company official was noncommittal on whether this would affect plans to double capacity at the site, but condemned what he saw as negative sentiment towards it.

Emergency services have extinguished the blaze, and power to the surrounding communities has mostly been restored.

Joerg Steinbach, the economy minister of Brandenburg, the German state where Tesla’s plant is based, condemned the suspected attack as having “terrorist markings”, and hitting tens of thousands of people.

“This includes hospitals, homes for the elderly, where people may also be dependent on oxygen supply or similar, which is electricity-based,” he said at a briefing outside the factory.

The Tesla site, which employs around 12,500 people, was evacuated and most employees sent home. Tesla shares were down 3% at 1522 GMT.

Local media published a letter purportedly from a far-left activist organisation called the Volcano Group that claimed responsibility for the incident, in a 2,500-word attack on Tesla and its billionaire CEO Musk.

Police said they were aware of the letter, which was signed “Agua De Pau”, the name of a volcanic mountain in the Azores, and said they were checking its authenticity.

“These are either the dumbest eco-terrorists on Earth or they’re puppets of those who don’t have good environmental goals,” Musk said on X.

“Stopping production of electric vehicles, rather than fossil fuel vehicles, ist extrem dumm,” he said, using the German for “extremely dumb”.

The attack was the latest setback for Tesla, which has had a bumpy ride in Europe of late, facing union pressure for collective bargaining agreements in the Nordics and supply disruptions as a result of attacks on shipping in the Red Sea.

Germany has championed new big-ticket foreign investments at a time when Europe’s largest economy is facing recession and grappling with higher inflation and weaker foreign demand.

“If a left-wing extremist motive is confirmed, then this is further evidence that the left-wing extremist scene does not shy away from attacks on critical energy infrastructure,” Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said.

“The consequences can affect thousands of completely uninvolved people, as they do today. This shows enormous criminal energy.”

‘WE SABOTAGED TESLA’

Police are investigating the possible arson attack in the area around the plant, which has been the focus of environmental protests since it was launched by Musk two years ago.

“We are shocked by what happened today. It’s the second direct attack on power supply to the factory and there was a third attack on the railway nearby. We are very concerned,” said plant head Andre Thierig.

He said the factory had managed to safely conduct an emergency shutdown, involving decanting molten aluminium from its smelters before it solidified.

Brandenburg state has documented previous arson attacks by far-left activists, including at a Tesla power supply site at Gruenheide in May 2021.

“We sabotaged Tesla,” read the letter about Tuesday’s incident, posted on website kontrapolis.info, describing the attack as a gift marking International Women’s Day on March 8.

“Tesla consumes earth, resources, people, workers, and in return spits out 6,000 SUVs, killer cars and monster trucks each week.”

Tesla’s ambitions to expand its plant, which has a capacity to produce around 500,000 cars a year, hit a roadblock when local residents voted down a motion to fell trees to enlarge it.

The U.S. EV maker wants to double the site’s capacity to 100 gigawatt hours of battery production and 1 million cars per year, setting it up to dominate the European market.

The plant’s output ramp-up has slowed, though the carmaker produced 6,000 cars in a week for the first time in January.

Steinbach said his government would reassess the current situation with regards to climate activists occupying the forest near the Tesla plant.

The initiative, named “Tesla Stoppen”, had struck a deal with the local government which assured them they would able to stay in the forest until mid-March on condition that they did not make fires or leave behind garbage, German media reported.

Between 80 and 100 people were currently taking part in the action, a spokesperson for the protesters said, adding that they planned to stay there for several weeks.
