India-Maldives dispute: Jaishankar says he “cannot guarantee that” when Male establishes a timeframe for the evacuation of Indian forces!

Tensions between India and Maldives rose recently when three junior ministers of the island nation made disparaging remarks about PM Narendra Modi’s visit to the Lakshadweep islands.

Jaishankar also highlighted the infrastructure development work India has undertaken in other countries. PTI

Amid the ongoing diplomatic row with the Maldives, Union External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently said that “politics is politics” and that “it can’t be guaranteed that every country will support or agree with India every time” even as he highlighted India’s continuous efforts to build global connections.

“But, seriously, as a solution, what we have been trying to do in the last 10 years, with a lot of success, is to build a very strong connect, so that, though the politics may go up and down, the people of the country, the society, generally have good feelings towards India and understand the importance of having good relations with India,” the minister said.

Jaishankar was speaking at a conference in Nagpur on Saturday, a day before the Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu set a March 15 deadline for India to withdraw its military personnel from his country. The Indian government did not immediately confirm the development or comment on it.

Jaishankar further listed the development works undertaken in various sectors in other countries. “We are involved today in building roads, electricity, transmission, supplying fuel, providing trade access, making investments, and having people holiday in other countries,” he added, stressing that “all these are parts of how you develop those relationships.” “Sometimes, things do not go in a good way, and then you have to reason with people to bring things back to where they should be,” the EAM said.

Tensions between India and Maldives rose recently when three junior ministers of the island nation’s government made derogatory remarks on social media about Prime Minister Narendra Modi visit to the Lakshadweep islands. The Maldivian government has distanced itself from the remarks and suspended”the ministers.

National Booch Day is celebrated in the US on January 15 as a tribute to Kombucha tea, enjoyed by millions of people across the globe for centuries.

National Booch Day is celebrated in the US on January 15 as a tribute to kombucha tea, enjoyed by millions of people across the globe for centuries. The day, also known as National Kombucha Day, gives tea lovers an opportunity to sip on their favourite beverage.

National Booch Day history

Legend has it that tea was created by accident. Dating back as far as 2737 B.C., Chinese Emperor Shen Nong was boiling water when a leaf from a wild tree fell into his pot. The first tea was thus brewed. In love with the taste, the Emperor introduced tea to the people around him – and the beverage was then eventually embraced by people in Japan, Russia and also the Western world.

Tea got the name Kombucha after a man named Dr. Kombu introduced it to the Japanese Emperor Inyoko during his travels. As the beverage became popular, the name ‘Cha’ was added to ‘Kombu’ – ‘Cha’ means tea in Japanese.

Kombucha eventually became a household name in the US. The beverage brand KeVita did not wait to grab the business opportunity, and soon launched their brand of Kombucha tea. The same company then founded the National Booch Day on January 15, 2019.

North Korea Tested Solid-Fuel Hypersonic Missile

North Korea on Sunday tested a new solid-fuel hypersonic missile with intermediate range, state news agency KCNA said on Monday, in a move that was condemned by the United States, South Korea and Japan.

North Korea

The launch was aimed at testing the reliability of new multi-stage, high-thrust solid-fuel engines and an intermediate-range hypersonic maneuverable controlled warhead, according to KCNA, which said the test did not pose a security threat to neighbouring countries.

South Korea’s military in a statement criticized the launch as a violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions and said direct provocations by the North would be met with its “overwhelming response.”

Sunday’s ballistic missile launch, the first by the North this year, was condemned by the nuclear envoys of South Korea, the U.S. and Japan, who said after a three-way phone call that North Korea’s provocations were a root cause of instability in the region.

The test occurred on the same day that a delegation led by Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui heading to Russia left Pyongyang, KCNA reported.

The missile launch and the visit to Russia come amid growing tensions between the two Koreas following Pyongyang’s series of intercontinental ballistic missile launches and its first military spy satellite, as well as deepening ties between Pyongyang and Moscow that have worried Washington and its allies.

In a separate KCNA commentary on Monday, North Korea accused Seoul of escalating tensions in the region with military drills and armament calls by South Korean officials.

“Even a little spark can be a catalyst for enormous physical conflicts between the two most hostile countries,” the commentary said.

North Korea

North Korea has recently announced changes to designate the South as a separate, enemy state, breaking with decades of policy, with leader Kim Jong Un saying peaceful reunification is no longer possible.

Analysts have said the move could potentially help justify the use of nuclear weapons against Seoul in a future war.

South Korea’s military said Sunday’s missile, launched from the area of Pyongyang at about 2:55 p.m. (0555 GMT), flew about 1,000 km (600 miles) off the country’s east coast. Japan’s defence ministry said the maximum altitude was at least 50 km (30 miles).

Hypersonic missiles typically launch a warhead that travels at more than five times the speed of sound, or about 6,200 km per hour (3,850 mph), often manoeuvring at relatively low altitudes.

Despite their name, analysts say the main feature of hypersonic weapons is not speed – which can sometimes be matched or exceeded by traditional ballistic missile warheads – but their manoeuvrability, which can help the warhead evade missile defences.

Pyongyang had previously said it tested its new solid-fuel engines for an intermediate ballistic missile on Nov. 11 and Nov. 14.

Donald Trump cries, ‘This is no fraud, it’s a fraud on me’ in New York fraud trial after judge allows him to speak!

In addition to a possible $370 million in damages, Donald Trump might be permanently barred from the New York real estate market.

Judge Arthur Engoron heard closing arguments from both parties on Thursday in the former president Donald Trump New York civil fraud trial. Judge Engoron will render a decision on the matter by January 31st.

In an effort to get more loans and benefits, the state attorney general’s office claimed that Trump had inflated his net worth by over $1 billion. Trump, however, maintained his innocence and disparaged both the attorney general and the judge.

The trial is a bench trial without a jury, starting on October 2 and concluding in mid-December. As a result, Trump might have to pay up to $370 million in damages and face a lifetime ban from the New York real estate market, where he made his name.

During his attorneys’ final arguments, Trump startled the court by asking to speak for a brief while, arguing that he was the party most impacted by the case. A similar request had been made by his attorney, Chris Kise, via email on Wednesday, but the court had turned it down when both Kise and Trump declined to refrain from making personal jabs in their remarks.

The judge reluctantly agreed to let Trump speak for up to five minutes on Thursday, but instructed him to “focus on the facts” of the case. Trump began speaking without permission after ignoring the judge’s advice.

“I’m an innocent man in this situation,” Trump told the judge. “I should be compensated for the hardships I have endured.”

“This isn’t fraud against consumers,” Trump added. “This is not a scam. It’s a sham on my part.

In addition, Trump insulted the attorney general, Letitia James, who was present in court, as well as the judge.

I am aware that you find this uninteresting. At one point, while seated at the defense table, Trump aggressively stated to the judge, “I know you have your own agenda.” He claimed James “hates” him and “doesn’t want him to get elected,” referring to the legal proceedings as a “persecution.” Kise was cautioned by the judge to “please control your client.”

‘Mr. Donald Trump violated the law’

After the hearing, James told reporters that the issue “has never been about politics.”

She declared, “The facts and the law are what matter in this case, and Mr. Donald Trump broke the law.”

Kevin Wallace and Andrew Amer, the attorneys from the AG’s office, provided proof that Trump’s financial statements were “false every year” for a total of “over a billion dollars” between 2011 and 2021. According to Wallace, the main questions of the trial were “what did the defendants know and when did they know it?” and whether or not they had the intention to distort their yearly financial statements as a part of a plot.

“Did they know it? And the answer is yes,” Wallace said.

Amer provided numerous instances of what he described as deliberate deception.

The former President also claimed his Trump Tower triplex apartment was three times its size, and estimated value, and Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg signed off on a financial statement that continued to value the apartment at over $300 million even after he’d been alerted it was 10,000 square feet instead of 30,000.

Amer stated, “That begs the question of fraudulent intent.”

Trump left before the AG’s office made its final remarks. At the same time, he had a press conference at his neighboring 40 Wall St. home. James is a “political hack,” he told the reporters there, adding that “we’ve proven the case so conclusively.”

US Attacks In Yemen Sharpen Biden’s Military And Political Dilemmas

Highlight:

US and British airstrikes against Iran-backed militants in Yemen represent a significant escalation of the conflict in the Middle East – and come despite weeks of efforts by President Joe Biden to head off a wider war.

All this occurred at a moment of deep political significance as Biden steps up his reelection campaign – amid fierce Republican criticism of his global leadership skills and foreign policy, especially from his most likely GOP opponent in November, ex-President Donald Trump. While the strikes were not a surprise, given intensified US warnings in recent days, they also took place a day after GOP presidential candidates Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley criticized Biden for being too slow to act to protect US forces and assets in the Middle East.

The strikes follow a worsening barrage of drones and missiles from Houthi rebels targeting commercial shipping in the Red Sea, a strategic waterway critical to the global economy. Those attacks are part of a pressure campaign against Israel and the US in the region, orchestrated by Iran through its proxies, in reaction to the war in Gaza. That means the US and UK operations carry an extra layer of risk because they essentially targeted the vital interests of the Islamic Republic.

While the Biden administration is desperate to avoid being sucked into a new Middle East conflict, especially with US troops in the firing line in Iraq and Syria, it had reached a point where action became inevitable. White House demands for a halt to Houthi attacks were being ignored. The credibility of US power in the region was on the line and there was an imperative to reestablish some form of deterrence.

“These targeted strikes are a clear message that the United States and our partners will not tolerate attacks on our personnel or allow hostile actors to imperil freedom of navigation in one of the world’s most critical commercial routes,” Biden said in a statement. “I will not hesitate to direct further measures to protect our people and the free flow of international commerce as necessary.”

The rationale for acting is that re-establishing deterrence could prompt the Houthis, and by extension Iran, to step back – and thus avoid a more perilous escalation on the premise that Tehran wants to avoid a wider conflict just as the US does.

But in such a volatile environment, with pro-Iranian groups stacked through the Middle East within easy range of Israel and US assets, the potential for retaliation and a pan-regional conflict is a realistic and dangerous possibility. And recent history shows the limited capacity of the US to exert its will on the Middle East.

A president’s agonizing choices

Given these stakes, Thursday evening’s action underscored the extreme demands of the presidency – a position that often involves choosing between unfavorable options with potentially grave consequences. At the same time, a failure to act and enforce US red lines and interests might be the worst choice of all – a conundrum that often pushes presidents into using military force.

This lonely presidential balancing act comes with added complications for Biden since it’s taking place just as the 2024 presidential election campaign cranks into a higher gear and as Republicans attack him for a failure to impose his will on the world amid rising challenges to US power.

Just four days before the Iowa caucuses open the GOP nominating race, Trump is conjuring a vision of a globe on the brink of a third world war, as he puts himself forward as the kind of strongman needed to restore order. This is a paradoxical message given the uproar of the former president’s first term and his habit of alienating US allies, but it is one that some voters find attractive. The Republican critique of Biden’s global leadership is tied to the narrative that, at 81, he is incapable of exercising US authority and is therefore unfit to serve a second term.

In another potential area of vulnerability for Biden, he ordered the strikes at a time when Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin remained in the hospital following complications after surgery for prostate cancer. Austin is at the center of a political storm after it emerged that he had been at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for three days before the White House was informed. The oversight has prompted criticism that he had put national security at risk.

Republicans welcome the strikes but criticize Biden anyway

There was no immediate reaction to the strikes from Republican presidential candidates who typically blast Biden as weak.

But DeSantis and Haley complained in the CNN Debate in Des Moines on Wednesday that the administration needed to more robustly exert power in the region to protect US troops.

“We’re supposed to have their backs. And Biden has been slow. He’s been hiding in a corner and he hasn’t dealt with it,” Haley, the former South Carolina governor and UN ambassador, said. “We need to go and take out every bit of the production that they have that’s allowing them to do those strikes.”

DeSantis said “anyone with half a brain” knew that Iran was behind the instability in the Middle East and he accused Biden of doing too little to protect American forces. “He’s leaving them out to dry, and I think it’s disgraceful for a commander in chief to do that,” the Florida governor said.

The hyper-politicized nature of US foreign policy was evident in the response from key GOP leaders in Congress, who welcomed the strikes but also faulted the president for not acting sooner.

“I am hopeful these operations mark an enduring shift in the Biden Administration’s approach to Iran and its proxies,” Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said in a statement. “To restore deterrence and change Iran’s calculus, Iranian leaders themselves must believe that they will pay a meaningful price unless they abandon their worldwide campaign of terror.”

Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi, the top Republican on the Armed Services Committee, said, “This strike was two months overdue, but it is a good first step toward restoring deterrence in the Red Sea.” He added: “It is time to dispense with the hollow talk of ‘joint resolutions’ and ‘maritime task forces.’ This strike should be a warning to the Houthis and other Iranian proxies that they will suffer catastrophic consequences from escalation in the region.”

The alarming developments in the Middle East reflect the extraordinary challenges facing an incumbent running for reelection. While Biden’s would-be opponents have the luxury of lacking official responsibilities, a president must consider the geo-strategic and humanitarian implications of their actions. Sometimes that means acting in the national interest in a way that may harm their political interests. Anytime commanders in chief use force, the reverberations can easily race out of their control. In a world full of increasing challenges to US power – especially from adversaries like China and Russia, who delight in testing and embarrassing US leaders – such risks become more acute with every election cycle.

In another age, a military venture with US troops in harm’s way might promote a rallying-around-the-flag effect that could help a president. But given the fracturing of America’s politics, Biden should not expect any payoff in the 2024 campaign from his decision to strike against the Houthis. And if the strikes work, he’s unlikely to get the credit for stabilizing the situation. If they don’t, a dangerous escalation of the situation could prove ruinous for him politically.

Biden also cannot ignore the possibility that deepening US involvement in the conflict in the Middle East – sparked by the Hamas terror attacks in Israel on October 7 and Israel’s move into Gaza, which has killed thousands of civilians  – could cause him problems within his own party. Many progressive Democrats are already dismayed at Biden’s staunch support for Israel amid the carnage of Palestinian civilians. There are signs that Biden’s electoral coalition is fraying, with hardening criticism of Israel among younger voters across the country and among Arab Americans in the critical swing state of Michigan for instance.

Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib argued Biden was violating Article I of the Constitution by carrying out airstrikes in Yemen without congressional approval. “The American people are tired of endless war,” the progressive Democrat wrote on X. Fellow Democratic Rep. Cori Bush of Missouri said the move is “illegal and violates Article I of the Constitution.” She added: “The people do not want more of our taxpayer dollars going to endless war and the killing of civilians.”

But Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, backed Biden – though he expressed concern about the possibility that the situation in the Middle East could continue to worsen. He called on the “Biden administration to continue its diplomatic efforts to avoid escalation to a broader regional war and continue to engage Congress on the details of its strategy and legal basis as required by law.”

The implication of Biden’s statements and indications to CNN from senior US officials was that Thursday’s strikes may not be the end of US operations against the Houthis.

If that’s the case, Biden’s complex weighing of national security and political interests is likely to be a constant companion as he seeks to convince Americans he is the best bet to keep the country safe in a second term.

India in constant touch with Israel, Palestine leaders: Amb Kamboj tells UNGA!

United Nations, January 10 (PTI): India said it maintains continuous communication with the leaders of Israel and Palestine and that, since the beginning of the most recent Middle East conflict, its “clear and consistent” message has been to prevent escalation in order to guarantee the delivery of humanitarian aid and the prompt restoration of peace and stability.

“There has been a significant loss of civilian lives as a result of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, particularly among women and children, and there is a concerning humanitarian crisis,” India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, stated in the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.

India

India has said that it is in constant touch with the leaders of Israel and Palestine and its “clear and consistent” message since the start of the latest Middle East conflict has been to prevent escalation to ensure continued delivery of humanitarian aid and early restoration of peace and stability.

“The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has led to a large-scale loss of civilian lives, especially women and children and has resulted in an alarming humanitarian crisis,” India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj said on January 10 in the UN General Assembly.

“This is clearly unacceptable and we have strongly condemned the death of civilians,” she said. She underlined that India is aware that the immediate trigger was the terror attacks in Israel on October 7, which were shocking and “deserve our unequivocal condemnation. India has a zero-tolerance approach to terrorism. There can be no justification for terrorism and hostage-taking.” Ms. Kamboj said India demands the immediate and unconditional release of those taken hostage.

Ms. Kamboj told the 193-member UNGA that the “leadership of India is in constant touch with the leaders of the region, including those of Israel and Palestine.” “The message that India has conveyed since the start of this conflict is clear and consistent. It is important to prevent escalation to ensure continued delivery of humanitarian aid and to work towards an early restoration of peace and stability. A peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy is the only way forward,” she said.

Ms. Kamboj was addressing a General Assembly meeting on Tuesday convened after the U.S. had on December 22, 2023, vetoed an amendment proposed by Russia to a resolution tabled in the Security Council on delivery of humanitarian aid throughout the Gaza strip.

The 15-nation Council had adopted the United Arab Emirates-drafted resolution that demanded scaling up humanitarian assistance throughout Gaza but had not called for a ceasefire.

Also Read : “Lala…”: Virat Kohli’s Trending Remark About Mohammed Shami’s Arjuna Award Win!

After days of intense negotiations and delays on a vote, the Council had adopted the resolution with 13 votes in favour, none against and abstentions by Russia and the U.S.

An amendment to the resolution proposed by Russia was not approved after the U.S., a permanent member of the Council, cast a veto. This veto triggered the UNGA meeting that was convened on January 9. The UNGA is now required to meet and discuss any time a veto is cast in the Security Council by any of the five permanent Council members.

India took note of the adoption of the Security Council resolution aimed towards scaling up humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza and commended UAE’s “able leadership” in piloting the text.

India’s Humanitarian Assistance to People of Palestine

Ms. Kamboj said India has voiced its views on the conflict in multilateral fora such as the G20, BRICS and at the Voice of the Global South Summit in November 2023, reiterating its long-standing and principled position on the issue. India has also called for continued humanitarian aid for the affected population and in this regard, Ms. Kamboj expressed hope that the Security Council resolution adopted in December would aid in enhancing humanitarian assistance.

Ms. Kamboj told the General Assembly that India has so far provided 70 tonnes of humanitarian aid, including 16.5 tonnes of medicine and medical supplies in two tranches to the people of Palestine.

India has also provided five million dollars, including the 2.5 million dollars it provided in December to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). “This will go to support the agency’s core programs and services, including education, healthcare, relief and social services provided to Palestinian refugees,” she said.

Ms. Kamboj reaffirmed India’s firm commitment to achieving a just, peaceful and lasting solution to the Israel-Palestine issue. “We firmly believe that only a two-state solution achieved through direct and meaningful negotiations between both sides on final status issues will deliver an enduring peace that the people of Israel and Palestine desire and deserve.” She said that for this, India urges the parties to de-escalate, eschew violence and work towards creating conditions for an early resumption of direct peace negotiations.

Ambassador Robert Wood, Alternate Representative for Special Political Affairs at the U.S. Mission to the UN, said that the adoption of the UNSC resolution had demonstrated Washington’s commitment to working with other Council members to speak out on this humanitarian crisis.

“This work supports the direct diplomacy the United States is engaged in to get more humanitarian aid into Gaza and to help get hostages out of Gaza. And it is unfortunate that rather than contributing to the hard work of diplomacy, one permanent member of the Security Council continues to put forward amendments and ideas that are disconnected from the situation on the ground,” he said, referring to the amendment tabled by Moscow that Washington vetoed.

As member states addressed the plenary, dozens of rabbis demonstrated on the balcony inside the Security Council chambers and disrupted the General Assembly plenary session to demand that the U.S. stop preventing the UN from taking urgent action for an immediate, permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

Led by Rabbis 4 Ceasefire, and co-organised by Jews For Racial & Economic Justice (JFREJ), Jewish Voice for Peace, and IfNotNow, the 36 rabbis recited prayers and excerpts of the UN Declaration of Human Rights, held a memorial service while holding up banners that read ‘Biden: The World Says Ceasefire’, ‘Biden: Stop Vetoing Peace’ and ‘Biden: Rabbis Demand Ceasefire Now’. “The rabbis were escorted out of the UN building by security,” a release said.

Boeing Acknowledged Mistake Over Plane Door Bow-out

The boss of Boeing has admitted the planemaker was at fault after one of its aircraft suffered a door blow-out shortly after take-off in the US.

Boeing

No-one was injured when the unused cabin door broke away from the Alaska Airlines flight from Portland, Oregon on Friday.

The US has grounded 171 of the Boeing 737 Max 9 planes since the incident.

On Tuesday, Boeing’s president and chief executive Dave Calhoun said the firm was “acknowledging our mistake”.

The door “plug” which fell away from the aircraft weighed 27kg (60lb) and was used to fill an emergency exit that was built into the plane, but not required by Alaska Airlines.

The missing section of the plane was retrieved from the back garden of a Portland teacher, according to the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

It has also been revealed that the airline placed restrictions on the aircraft following pressurisation warnings in the days before the incident, investigators have said.

Boeing

Speaking to Boeing staff, Mr Calhoun said: “We’re going to approach this number one acknowledging our mistake. We’re going to approach it with 100% and complete transparency every step of the way.”

Mr Calhoun reassured staff that Boeing would work with the NTSB to investigate the cause of the accident.

“They will get to a conclusion… the FAA [Federal Aviation Authority] who has to now deal with airline customers who want airplanes back in service safely and to ensure all the procedures are put into place, inspections, all the readiness actions that are required to ensure every next airplane that moves into the sky is in fact safe and that this event can never happen again,” he said.

The Boeing boss also empathised with those who watched with horror at the footage of the incident: “When I got that picture, all I could think about – I didn’t know what happened so whoever was supposed to be in the seat next to that hole in the airplane. I’ve got kids, I’ve got grandkids and so do you. This stuff matters. Every detail matters.”

Inspections of Boeing 737 Max 9’s are continuing after the FAA said its first priority was “keeping the flying public safe”.

Golden Globes 2024: Oppenheimer and Succession sweep up

Golden Globes 2024
Cillian Murphy (pictured) won for his portrayal of J Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s biopic of the theoretical physicist

Oppenheimer was the big winner at the Golden Globe Awards, taking home five awards including the top prize.

Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr were both recognised for their acting performances, while Christopher Nolan won best director.

Succession scored the most wins in the TV categories following its acclaimed fourth and final season.

Meanwhile, Barbie won the first box office achievement award, after grossing $1.4bn (£1.13m) worldwide.

There were two wins each for Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers and Poor Things, and one for Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon.

The film’s star Lily Gladstone was named best drama actress, making her the first indigenous person to win the award, something she described as “historic”.

Oppenheimer star Murphy paid tribute to Nolan’s “rigour, focus and dedication” in making the film, which grossed $954m (£750m) at the box office.

In his acceptance speech. he said: “I knew the first time I walked on Christopher Nolan’s set that it was different,” he said in his acceptance speech.

“I could tell by the level of rigour, focus, dedication, and the complete lack of seating options for actors,” he joked, “that I was in the hands of a visionary director.”

Robert Downey Jr won best supporting actor for his performance in Oppenheimer

Murphy also joked about the number of Irish nominees in awards season this year – Andrew Scott and Barry Keoghan among them.

“To all my fellow nominees, whether you’re Irish or not, you’re all legends, I salute you,” he said.

The biopic also won awards for best score and best supporting actor for Downey Jr, who portrayed US government official Lewis Strauss.

Downey Jr acknowledged the film’s unlikely box office success in his acceptance speech, joking: “A sweeping story about the ethical dilemma of nuclear weapons grosses $1bn?”

The actor continued: “Dozens of folks have come up to me since the summer time saying I was unrecognisably subtle as Lewis Strauss. To my fellow nominees, let’s not pretend this is a compliment.”

He also referred to the changes made to the Golden Globes membership following a scandal over corruption and a lack of diversity. “Thanks for changing your game,” he said.

Lily Gladstone spoke Blackfeet as she accepted her award

Killers of the Flower Moon star Lily Gladstone began her acceptance speech by speaking Algonquian language Blackfoot. She comes from a Blackfeet Indian Reservation in northern Montana.

“I just spoke a bit of Blackfeet language, the beautiful community nation that raised me, encouraged me to keep doing this,” she told the audience.

“I’m here with my mum, who, even though she’s not Blackfeet, worked tirelessly to get Blackfeet into our classroom.

“This award is a historic one. I’m so grateful I can speak even a little bit of my language, because in this business, Native actors used to speak their lines in English, and then their sound mixers would run them backwards to accomplish Native languages on camera.”

In Killers of the Flower Moon, Gladstone plays Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman whose family members are brutally murdered as part of a plot by white settlers to move in on their land and take their fortune, fuelled by greed over oil.

Sarah Snook, who played Shiv Roy in Succession, was named best leading actress in a TV drama

Succession was the big winner in the TV categories – following the fourth and final season of the series about a media mogul and his children who battle for control of his company.

Kieran Culkin, who played Roman Roy in the series, was named best leading TV actor – an award previously won by his co-stars Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong.

“I was nominated for a Golden Globe like 20 years ago,” he recalled, “and when that moment passed, I thought, ‘I’ll never be in this room again’.

“I accepted I was never going to be on this stage. But thanks to Succession…. this is a nice moment.”

His co-star Sarah Snook was named best leading TV actress, and told the audience: “This show has changed my life.”

“We would like to dedicate to every single person on the planet who dressed up and went to the greatest place on earth – the movie theatres,” said the film’s star Margot Robbie.

“And thank you so much to the Golden Globes for creating an award that celebrates movie fans. This is a movie about Barbie but it’s also a movie about humans. We made it for you, and we made it with love, and thank you for loving it back.”

Billie Eilish also won best original song for What Was I Made For? – one of three songs which were nominated from the film’s soundtrack.

“It was exactly a year ago when I was shown the movie, and I was very miserable and depressed at the time, and writing that song kind of saved me a little bit,” Eilish said.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph won best supporting actress for her portrayal in The Holdovers of a woman suffering immense grief after the death of her son.

“Mary, you have changed my life, you have made me feel seen in so many ways,” she said, referring to the character she plays. “And I hope I helped you all find your inner Mary, because there is a little bit of her in all of us.”

Addressing the film’s director Alexander Payne, she said: “Thank you for giving me the opportunity to play this beautiful and flawed woman.”

Her co-star Paul Giamatti was named best leading actor in a drama. He plays a teacher who is forced to stay in his boarding school over Christmas to look after the children who are not returning home for the holidays.

Climbing the steps to the stage to accept the award, he joked his “knees were shot”, adding: “I’m never going to be in John Wick 5 at this rate.”

He too paid tribute to Payne, calling him “Alexander the Great, who for some mysterious reason continues to have enormous faith in me and I don’t know why”.

Giamatti concluded: “It’s a movie about a teacher. My whole family are teachers, all of them going back generations. Teachers are good people, you’ve got to respect them, they do a tough job, so this is for teachers as well.”

Courtroom drama Anatomy of a Fall was named best screenplay. Its director Justine Triet recalled the process of writing the film with her partner Arthur Harari.

“We were in the pandemic,” she recalled, “and my life partner and I, we spent our days co-writing the screenplay for Anatomy of a Fall, stuck in our apartment – and strangely, nobody died.”

Early winners in the TV categories include Steven Yeun and Ali Wong – who were both recognised for their performances in Beef – and The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri.

Elsewhere, Elizabeth Debicki was named best supporting actress in a TV series for her portrayal of Princess Diana in The Crown. She thanked the show’s producers “for trusting me with this part”.

The Globes mark the first major ceremony of film awards season, which culminates with the Oscars on 10 March.

Emma Stone won best actress in a musical or comedy for her performance in Poor Things

Emma Stone was named best actress in a musical or comedy for her performance in Poor Things, which also won best musical or comedy film.

Poor Things sees Stone play a young woman, Bella Baxter, who goes on a journey of self discovery and sexual awakening as she travels around the world.

“Bella falls in love with life itself, rather than a person, she accepts the good and bad in equal measure,” Stone said in her acceptance speech.

“And that really made me look at life differently, and that all of it counts. She has stayed with me deeply, so this means the world to me.”

She thanked director Yorgos Lanthimos, saying she would be “forever be grateful that we met”, and writer Tony McNamara, to whom she joked: “I love getting to say this dialogue, and I love getting to horrify you with my Australian accent.”

Maldives Suspended Three Ministers Over Derrogatory Remarks On PM Modi

The three suspended ministers That Maldives govt. suspended, are Mariyam Shiuna, Malsha Sharif and Mahzoom Maajid.

Maldives

The Maldives government on Sunday suspended three deputy ministers after they took to social media to make derogatory remarks against PM Narendra Modi, local media Atoll Times reported. In an earlier statement, the government had said it “will not hesitate to take action against those who make such derogatory remarks”.

The three suspended ministers are Mariyam Shiuna, Malsha Sharif and Mahzoom Maajid.

In a statement, the government said: “The Government of Maldives is aware of derogatory remarks on social media platforms against foreign leaders and high-ranking individuals. These opinions are personal and do not represent the views of the Government of Maldives.”

Earlier, Maldivian Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment Mariyam Shiuna had made disparaging comments against Modi on social media platform X, which drew condemnation from former Maldivian president Mohamed Nasheed.

Shiuna’s now deleted post featured photos of Modi from his recent visit to Lakshadweep. “What a clown. The puppet of Israel Mr. Narendra diver with life jacket. #VisitMaldives #SunnySideOfLife,” the post said. She also compared India to cow dung.

Another deputy minister, a colleague of Shiuna, Malsha Sharif, made similar derogatory comments against India and the tourism campaign in the Maldives.

These posts, along with others by prominent politicians and leaders, instigated other users into posting a wide range of racist remarks against Indians and Indian tourists who travel to the Maldives.

In a post on X, Nasheed, who was seen to be more India-friendly than the current administration, said, “What appalling language by Maldives Government official @shiuna_m towards the leader of a key ally, that is instrumental for Maldives’ security and prosperity. @MMuizzu gov must distance itself from these comments and give clear assurance to India they do not reflect gov policy.”

Modi’s visit to Maldives and his social media posts documenting it have led to a social media battle among Maldivian politicians, government officials and Indian social media users. Others posted about the various ways in which India has offered assistance to the Maldives over the years and some of the more well-known aspects of bilateral cooperation between the two countries, in response to the mockery by Maldivian social media users.

Following the derogatory remarks by Maldivians, Indian social media users used the hashtag “Boycott Maldives” and vowed to refrain from travelling to Maldives for their vacations.

In November 2023, the Maldives government headed by Mohamed Muizzu had “formally requested” the Indian government to “withdraw its military personnel” from the island nation.
