Iran President, Foreign Minister Die In Helicopter Crash.

About thirty minutes into the journey, the chopper carrying President Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and other officials lost communication.

Iran President Ebrahim Raisi was killed in a helicopter crash in East Azerbaijan province on Sunday, Iranian media said. The chopper carrying Iran President Raisi and his foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian had disappeared over a mountainous region

There was “no sign” of life among passengers of the helicopter, Iran’s state television said. “Upon finding the helicopter, there was no sign of the helicopter passengers being alive as of yet,” the state TV said.

This incident follows a period of heightened regional tensions, particularly in light of the Gaza conflict and Iran’s recent escalations with Israel. President Raisi, who has been in office since 2021, has pledged Iran’s steadfast support for Palestine, a stance reiterated during his recent dam inauguration speech.

Saudi King Salman to Get Lung Inflammation Treatment at Palace.

According to the state-run Saudi Press Agency, King Salman Bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia is undergoing antibiotic treatment at Al Salam Palace in Jeddah due to lung inflammation.

Who is Saudi Arabia’s King Salman?

King Salman held positions as Defence Minister and Governor of the central Riyadh region before to ascending to the throne of Saudi Arabia. He has been 88 years old and king or queen since 2015.

Mohammed bin Salman, his son, is widely regarded as the de facto ruler of the nation and was named crown prince in 2017.

The Kingdom at the time denied rumours that the king was getting ready to abdicate and give way to his son.

In 2020, King Salman had surgery to remove his gallbladder.

In March 2022, he was hospitalized to change the battery of his pacemaker.

Since stepping into the limelight, the crown prince has implemented social and economic reforms in an apparent push to make Saudi Arabia less reliant on oil in the future.

Saudi Arabia has undertaken major construction projects, including building the desert city of Neomunder Mohammed bin Salman, with the goal of increasing tourism to the kingdom.

The prince has also overseen a crackdown on dissent.

According to the state-run Saudi Press Agency, King Salman Bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia is undergoing antibiotic treatment at Al Salam Palace in Jeddah due to lung inflammation.

The 88-year-old monarch suffered joint pain and a high fever, the agency said early on Sunday. At the Royal Clinics at Al Salam Palace, he was examined by medical professionals.

He was admitted to the hospital in April and then left after receiving a standard examination, according to SPA at the time.

Since 2015, King Salman has been in charge of the biggest oil exporter in the world. Most of Saudi Arabia’s daily operations are managed by his son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman III.

This week, the crown prince was supposed to make his uncommon journey outside of the Middle East—to Japan. The Japanese government stated that MBS, as he is known, was scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida during the May 20–23 visit.

France Declares State Of Emergency In New Caledonia As Protests Rage

Paris:

France has declared a state of emergency on the Pacific archipelago of New Caledonia after violent protests flared up against electoral reforms killing one police officer and three others, the Washington Post reported.

Notably, New Caledonia is a French overseas territory located hundreds of miles off Australia’s eastern coast.

The violence — the worst in decades — is the latest flash point in long-running tensions over Paris’ role in the archipelago.

“On behalf of the government, I reiterate before you the call for calm and appeasement,” government spokeswoman Prisca Thevenot said Wednesday at a news briefing following a ministerial meeting.

She paid tribute to the four people who lost their lives in the unrest and called for “the resumption of political dialogue” to find a solution to the violence.

The state of emergency came into effect at 8 pm (Paris time) on Wednesday and 5 am in Noumea, the island’s capital.

According to French law, a state of emergency can be declared in situations of “imminent danger resulting from serious breaches of public order.”

It grants local authorities expanded powers, to cut off public access to certain areas, for example, and to execute searches and prevent certain individuals from entering those areas if they are deemed to represent a threat to public safety, the Washington Post reported.

“All violence is intolerable and will be the subject of a relentless response to ensure the return of order,” a statement released by French President Emmanuel Macron’s office on Wednesday read.

Reacting to the violent protest, French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said, “Since the start of the week, New Caledonia has been hit by violence of a rare intensity.” He added that a state of emergency “will allow us to roll out massive means to restore order.”

The unrest began on Monday as French lawmakers prepared to vote on a decision to expand voting rights in the territory. However, critics argue that this could marginalize the Indigenous Kanak population and benefit pro-French politicians. The National Assembly adopted the revision overnight.

But, for the legislation to become a law, both chambers of parliament still must vote a final time, the Voice of America reported.

Groups representing the Kanak people — who make up about 40 per cent of the territory’s 3,00,000-strong population — have long sought independence, while the descendants of European colonizers wish to remain part of France, according to the Washington Post.

Under the 1998 Noumea Accord, which helped end a decade of unrest, voting was to be restricted to Kanaks and individuals born before 1998. But, the new constitutional measure will allow anyone who has been a resident of New Caledonia for 10 years to vote in local elections — diluting the power of the Kanaks.

“We feel oppressed, we’re angry,” Voice of America quoted a woman as saying to the Caledonia TV. She questioned whether people in France were listening to Kanaks like herself.

French Minister of the Interior and Overseas Territories Gerald Darmanin told RTL French radio early Wednesday that “hundreds” of people were injured, including about 100 police officers and gendarmes whose barracks were attacked with axes and live ammunition.

“Calm must absolutely be restored,” he said. “There are hundreds of injured in New Caledonia, dozens of houses and businesses that have been burned, set alight.”

The French High Commission informed on Wednesday that at least 130 people had been arrested. It also reported “numerous” incidents of arson and looting against businesses, infrastructure, and public buildings. The mission added that there had been an attempted ‘prison break’.

The French government has announced the deployment of additional police officers and gendarmes as reinforcements.

French authorities also imposed an overnight curfew and banned gatherings in the capital, Noumea. New Caledonia’s La Tontouta International Airport is closed to commercial flights.

The mineral-rich New Caledonia was annexed by France in 1853, and all inhabitants were given French citizenship in 1957. However, the territory has seen decades of tensions between Kanaks and European descendants over the issue of independence, according to the Washington Post.

In addition to the rules on voting rights, the 1998 Noumea agreement set out provisions for three referendums to decide New Caledonia’s future, but each one rejected ‘independence’. Notably, the last vote, held in December 2021 was boycotted by pro-independence parties, because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Maldives Questions Indian Aircraft Pilots..

The Maldives High Commission of India declared in a statement that Indian aviation platforms have always operated in the Maldives in accordance with “agreed procedures and with due authorisation.”

India on Tuesday dismissed the claim made by Maldivian Defence Minister Ghassan Maumoon, alleging that Indian military helicopter pilots stationed in the Maldives carried out an unauthorised operation in 2019.

In a statement, the High Commission of India in the Maldives asserted that Indian aviation platforms in the Maldives have always operated according to the “agreed procedures and with due authorisation.”

The clarification came days after India completed the withdrawal of 76 military personnel from the Maldives following a demand by President Mohamed Muizzu. Relations between India and Maldives deteriorated since Muizzu, a pro-China leader, came to power in November last year.

Muizzu had set May 10 as the deadline for the withdrawal of the Indian military troops from his country.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Defence Minister Ghassan said he knew of one of the aviation platforms undertaking an unauthorised sortie.

He narrated an incident where one of the two helicopters operated by Indian military personnel in the Maldives landed in Thimarafushi, allegedly without permission – a case, which he said, was reviewed by the Parliament’s Committee on National Security Services (241 Committee), when he was a lawmaker.

However, the Indian mission dismissed the allegation.

“Indian aviation platforms in the Maldives have always operated as per agreed procedures and with due authorisation from the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF),” the High Commission of India said.

Referring to the remarks by the Maldivian Defence Minister, the High Commission said the particular incident which saw an emergency landing at Thimarafushi on October 9, 2019, was “necessitated due to an unforeseen exigency.” “The specific sortie on 09 October 2019 referred to at the press conference was also undertaken with the approval of MNDF.

The emergency landing at Thimarafushi was necessitated due to an unforeseen exigency, which was carried out after taking necessary on-ground approvals from the Air Traffic Control (ATC) to ensure the safety and security of the platform and crew,” the High Commission asserted.

According to local media reports, on May 11, the MNDF revealed that the Indian military personnel who were previously operating the helicopters gifted to the Maldives by the Indian government had made a trip on the helicopter without notifying the Maldivian military during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Incidentally, at the same press conference, Defence Minister Ghassan also confessed that the Maldives military still does not have pilots capable of operating three aircraft donated by India.

The Indian military personnel were stationed in the Maldives to operate two helicopters and a Dornier aircraft gifted by India. The helicopters and the aircraft were used primarily for medical evacuations.

The last batch of Indian military personnel were repatriated by Friday, as per the May 10 deadline set following an agreement between the two countries in February in New Delhi.

Melinda Gates is retaining $12.5 billion for her work even after leaving the Gates Foundation.

“Her last day of work at the foundation will be June 7,” stated Melinda French Gates.

Melinda French Gates announced Monday she has decided to resign from her role as co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation – an organization that has become one of the most influential in the world. “My last day of work at the foundation will be June 7,” she posted on X.

She insisted that this wasn’t a decision that she came to lightly, adding “The time is right for me to move forward into the next chapter of my philanthropy”.

“Under the terms of my agreement with Bill, in leaving the foundation, I will have an additional $12.5 billion to commit to my work on behalf of women and families,” she said.

Ms French Gates said that she will be sharing more about her charitable plans in the future.

The name of the foundation will change to the Gates Foundation “to honor Bill Sr.’s legacy and Melinda’s contributions”, said CEO Mark Suzman, adding Bill “will become the sole Chair of the foundation”.

Mr Suzman said Ms French Gates made this decision “after considerable reflection, based on how she wants to spend the next chapter of her philanthropy”. “Melinda has new ideas about the role she wants to play in improving the lives of women and families in the US and around the world. And, after a difficult few years watching women’s rights rolled back in the US and around the world, she wants to use this next chapter to focus specifically on altering that trajectory,” he said in a statement.

Terming the development as a “very sad news” that people will need time to process, Ms Suzman highlighted that many were drawn to the foundation because of Ms French Gates’ global leadership, “particularly in gender equality, and her ability to connect our work to the people who need support the most”.

This is difficult news for me, too. Like you, I truly admire Melinda, and I will deeply miss working with her and learning from her, he said.

Maldives Thanks India for $50 Million Budget Aid After Indian Troop Withdrawals.

India economic support, according to the Maldives government, took the shape of a $50 million Treasury Bill that was rolled over for an extra year.

Moosa Zameer, the foreign minister of the Maldives, praised the Indian government on Monday for providing $50 million in budget help to the island nation. This comes amid a decline in bilateral relations between the two nations since pro-China President Mohammed Muizzu assumed office.

“I thank EAM @DrSJaishankar and the Government of #India for extending vital budgetary support to Maldives with the rollover of USD 50 million Treasury Bill. This is a true gesture of goodwill which signifies the longstanding friendship between #Maldives and #India,” Zameer, who visited India from May 8 to 10 on his very first bilateral official visit, posted on social platform X.

The Maldives government’s foreign office said that India’s budgetary support was in the form of a rollover of $50 million Treasury Bill, for an additional year, through the State Bank of India, Male’, from 13 May 2024.

The Maldives government said it is “highly appreciative of the generous support that Government of India has been providing to the Maldives in the form of budgetary support.”

“Large number of infrastructural developmental projects and High Impact Community Developmental projects are underway with the assistance from the Government of India, which consists of a notable part as grant assistance. The Government of Maldives looks forward in continuing this collaborative partnership for the mutual benefit and prosperity of their people,” the Muizzu government statement added.

Last week, the Maldives foreign minister had said that 76 Indian military personnel were replaced by civilian employees of the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited which manufactured the two helicopters gifted by India, thus also ending the suspense over the exact number of those repatriated at the insistence of Male.

The relations between the two countries came under severe strain in the view of Muizzu insisting on the withdrawal of Indian military personnel operating three military platforms in the island nation.

First Human Kidney Transplant Patient From Pig Dies: What is the Purpose of Using Pigs in Xenotransplantation?

Richard Slayman got the First Human Kidney Transplant Patient in March this year. Why are xenotransplantations done, and what complications can arise due to them? We explain.

About two months after the procedure, on Saturday, May 11, the first recipient of a modified pig kidney transplant passed away. The transplant operation was not connected to the death of 62-year-old Richard “Rick” Slayman, according to his family or the Massachusetts General Hospital, where the treatment was carried out.

The hospital released a statement saying, “We have no indication that it (Slayman’s death) was the result of his recent transplant.” Noting that “their enormous efforts leading the xenotransplant gave our family seven more weeks with Rick,” his family also expressed gratitude to the doctors for their work.

We explain what the procedure is, the promise it holds, and the complications associated with it.

What is xenotransplantation?

According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), “Xenotransplantation is any procedure that involves the transplantation, implantation or infusion into a human recipient of either (a) live cells, tissues, or organs from a nonhuman animal source, or (b) human body fluids, cells, tissues or organs that have had ex vivo contact with live nonhuman animal cells, tissues or organs.”

Essentially, it is the use of animal cells and organs to heal humans. Xenotransplantation involving the heart was first tried in humans in the 1980s. The need for such a procedure was felt because of the significant gap between the number of transplantations needed by patients and the availability of donor organs.

A 2024 article in Nature notes: “In the United States alone, there are nearly 90,000 people waiting for a kidney transplant, and more than 3,000 people die every year while still waiting.”

The website of Columbia University’s Department of Surgery also points to evidence of neurodegenerative disorders and diabetes being treated with the help of animal cells and tissues.

Sushil Kumar Modi, Bihar Former Deputy Chief Minister, Passes Away at 72

How does xenotransplantation happen?

In 2023, Dr. Robert Montgomery, the chief of New York University Langone’s Transplant Institute, told Associated Press that sewing a pig kidney into a donated body isn’t much different than a regular transplant, and “post-surgery immune-suppressing drugs are standard, too.”

But there are several crucial additional steps. For one, the animal organ selected has to undergo genetic modifications, so that the human body does not reject it.

A report from the Harvard Medical School, whose physicians were involved in Slayman’s operation, said 69 genomic edits were made to the pig kidney in his case. The gene editing technology CRISPR-Cas9 was employed to “Remove certain pig genes that produce sugars with antibodies our immune systems react to” and “Add certain human genes to improve the kidney’s compatibility with humans.”

Even after the operation, constant monitoring needs to be done to check the body’s response to the organ.

Has Rahul Dravid Quit? ‘Growing a World Class Indian Cricket Team’ is the BCCI Established Objective for a New Coach.

Why are pigs often used for xenotransplantation?

Pig heart valves have been used for replacing damaged valves in humans for over 50 years now. The pig’s anatomical and physiological parameters are similar to that of humans, and the breeding of pigs in farms is widespread and cost-effective.

Also, many varieties of pig breeds are farmed, which provides an opportunity for the size of the harvested organs to be matched with the specific needs of the human recipient.

In January 2022, the first xenotransplantation of a genetically-modified pig heart was done. However, the patient passed away after two months due to a range of factors, including being tainted with a latent virus in the pig heart, which may have contributed to the dysfunction of the transplant.

In Mumbai, a Hoarding Collapse Incident Resulted in 9 Deaths and 70 Injuries.

What are the complications in xenotransplantation?

First, it has to be ensured that the body does not reject the organ. According to the NYU Langone website, one method of doing this is embedding the pig’s thymus gland, responsible for “educating” the immune system, underneath the outer layer of the kidney. This helps keep away any new or delayed immune responses.

The FDA also notes concerns of potential infection of recipients with both “recognised and unrecognised infectious agents and the possible subsequent transmission to their close contacts and into the general human population.”

Another public health concern is the possibility of cross-species infection by retroviruses, “which may be latent and lead to disease years after infection.”

US man, 62, Dies After Receiving First-Ever Pig Kidney Transplant.

The 62-year-old resident of Massachusetts’ Weymouth, Richard Slayman, shot to fame for receiving the world’s first genetically modified pig kidney transplant in March, has died.

Announcing Slayman’s death, the family thanked the doctors and the entire care team at Massachusetts General Hospital, reported ABC News.

Earlier in March, Pig Kidney Transplant Slayman underwent a successful four-hour surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and was later released in April. However, the reason for his death remains unknown, and the hospital confirmed it was not related to the transplant.

“The Mass General transplant team is deeply saddened at the sudden passing of Mr. Rick Slayman. We do not indicate that it was the result of his recent transplant,” ABC News quoted a Massachusetts General Hospital statement.

According to details, Slayman – before receiving the transplant – had battled Type 2 diabetes and hypertension for years. He also relied on dialysis for years before receiving a human kidney transplant in December 2018, which was performed by the same Massachusetts General Hospital team.

However, the transplanted kidney from the human donor showed rejection signs, and he returned to dialysis treatment in 2023.

“Mr. Slayman will forever be seen as a beacon of hope to countless transplant patients worldwide and we are deeply grateful for his trust and willingness to advance the field of xenotransplantation. We offer our heartfelt condolences to Mr Slayman’s family and loved ones as they remember an extraordinary person whose generosity and kindness touched all who knew him,” the hospital’s statement read.

But in March, Slayman underwent another kidney transplant that arrived from eGenesis, a Cambridge-based pharmaceutical company. It was harvested from a pig genetically modified using CRISPR-Cas9 technology.

Massachusetts General Hospital said that they removed incompatible pig genes and introduced specific human genes to enhance compatibility with the recipient’s body, but after seven weeks, he died.

What did the family say:

Slayman’s family expressed their deepest appreciation to the doctors and others at Massachusetts General Hospital.

“Our family is deeply saddened about the sudden passing of our beloved Rick but take great comfort knowing he inspired so many. Millions of people worldwide have come to know Rick’s story. We felt – and still feel – comforted by the optimism he provided patients desperately waiting for a transplant.”

“We are extremely grateful to his care team across Massachusetts General Hospital and Mass General Brigham, especially Dr. Williams, Dr. Kawai, and Dr. Riella, who truly did everything they could to help give Rick a second chance. Their enormous efforts leading the xenotransplant gave our family seven more weeks with Rick, and our memories made during that time will remain in our minds and hearts.”

Adding more, the family said, “Rick accomplished that goal and his hope and optimism will endure forever. His legacy will inspire patients, researchers, and health care professionals everywhere.”

Miss USA Pageant Resignation: Under Scrutiny as 2 Winners Resign Citing Mental Health, Disrespect.

Miss USA Pageant Resignation: Noelia Voigt, a 24-year-old Venezuelan American, and Mexican-Indian American Miss Teen USA UmaSofia Srivastava, who is 17, has resigned in the space of a few days.

The resignations of the reigning Miss USA and Miss Teen USA in the space of a few days have put the pageants’ parent organization under the microscope — especially as the young women cited mental health and differences in values as their reasons.

The pair stepped down just days after an employee of the Miss USA organization — which was created in 1952 and owned for a time by Donald Trump — quit, citing “workplace toxicity” and claiming the two titleholders were mistreated.

Claudia Michelle, Miss USA’s social media director, resigned on May 3, saying in an Instagram post that she had worked without compensation for two months, was not given proper staff, and believed management disrespected the winners.

Michelle said she had worked closely with Miss USA Noelia Voigt — a 24-year-old Venezuelan American who was crowned in September — and had seen “a decline in her mental health” — an issue Voigt mentioned when she resigned on Monday.

As for Miss Teen USA UmaSofia Srivastava, who is 17, Michelle said she had “firsthand seen the disrespect toward Uma and her family.”

“I disavow workplace toxicity and bullying of any kind,” Michelle wrote, slamming the “unprofessional and inappropriate” way she felt management had spoken to Voigt and Srivastava.

In her own Instagram post, Voigt — who represented the western state of Utah — said she was resigning, noting: “Never compromise your physical and mental well-being. Our health is our wealth.”

She called her time as Miss USA “incredibly meaningful,” highlighting her charity work and being the first Venezuelan American to win the title.

But she also said she hoped to “inspire others to remain steadfast, prioritize your mental health, advocate for yourself and others by using your voice, and never be afraid of what the future holds.”

Internet sleuths have even pointed out what they believe to be a coded message: the first letters of each sentence in Voigt’s statement spell out “I AM SILENCED.”

Srivastava — a self-described “first generation, Mexican-Indian American” from New Jersey — said Wednesday she was relinquishing her crown as her “personal values no longer fully align with the direction of the organization.”

In response, the Miss USA organization said: “We respect and support Noelia’s decision to step down from her duties. The well-being of our titleholders is a top priority.”

Miss Teen USA issued a similarly worded statement about Srivastava.

Miss USA Controversy

The Miss USA contest has seen several controversies and scandals in recent years, with multiple allegations of preferential treatment given to certain contestants, according to media reports.

The organization later found those claims to be unsubstantiated, but the president of Miss USA, former titleholder Crystle Stewart, stepped down.

Her husband Max Sebrechts, who had served as the organization’s vice president, left amid a swirl of sexual harassment allegations made by past contestants.

Voigt’s resignation was the first time that a Miss USA titleholder had surrendered the post since the inception of the competition for any reason other than being crowned Miss Universe, a linked pageant.

Cheslie Kryst, who was crowned Miss USA in 2019, died by suicide in early 2022.

In her memoir, published posthumously last month and excerpted by People magazine, she wrote of “long-standing insecurities” that again came to the fore when she won the title and suffered online abuse.

Flooding in Brazil: Over 100 People Dead, at Least 136 Missing as Rains Trigger Massive.

Severe flooding leaves at least 100 dead and thousands homeless in Flooding in Brazil.

Heavy rains have caused catastrophic flooding in southern Brazil killing at least 100 people and leaving thousands more homeless.

The southern state of Rio Grande do Sul was hit by heavy rain last week and subsequent flooding has washed away roads, collapsed bridges, and caused landslides across the state.

The latest estimates from the state civil defense authority say that 372 people have been injured and as many as 128 are still unaccounted for. More than 1.45 million people across 417 of the state’s 497 cities have been affected and the latest estimates suggest more than 200,000 people have been displaced.

Rio Grande do Sul has been virtually cut off from the rest of Brazil with roads flooded. The state’s main airport has been inundated by water and could be out of use for at least 30 days.

Officials have said it is the “worst natural calamity” to hit the state.

Residents rest in a makeshift shelter for people whose homes were flooded by heavy rains, in Canoas, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil.

In Porto Alegre, the capital city of Rio Grande do Sul, several water plants have stopped functioning leaving an estimated 80 percent of the population without access to drinking water. Supplies are being rationed and officials are distributing drinking water to hospitals and shelters in tankers.

Many have also been left without electricity after power companies cut off supplies due to security reasons.

Thousands displaced by flooding across Rio Grande do Sul

With thousands of people displaced, homes and businesses destroyed, and widespread destruction, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva promised the government would do “everything in [its] power” to contribute to the recovery of Rio Grande do Sul.

But rescue efforts have been hampered by looting and the flood waters that still linger in the city. In Porto Alegre, police have been providing volunteers with security patrols using boats and even jet skis.

Thousands are still waiting to be evacuated and officials have called for anyone who owns “any kind of boat” to offer it to emergency teams. Around 15,000 soldiers, firefighters, police, and volunteers are working to rescue people and transport aid.

Volunteers help to evacuate residents from an area flooded by heavy rains, in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

Brazilian Paralympic fencer Vanderson Chaves is one of those impacted by the disaster. He told the Associated Press that he has faced many challenges in his career but none as fearsome as these floods.

“There’s no way this wouldn’t affect me. To compete and to train well, you need to be well psychologically. And I’m not,” he said. The waters washed away his equipment, dozens of medals, and his passport and may even have thwarted his chances of reaching the Paris Games in September. He has also been displaced by the flooding.

ust days before he started decisive competitions to secure his spot at the Paris Paralympics, Paralympian fencer Vanderson Chaves's apartment was inundated.

“I come from an impoverished area of Porto Alegre. Everything for me is more difficult to achieve. I am Black, I am disabled. And now this.”

Residents are also reportedly facing shortages of essential supplies including drinking water. In many places, access to supply trucks or employees is completely cut off.

Authorities warn more rain is on the way

Downpours started on 29 April with more than 300 millimetres of rain falling in less than a week, according to Brazil’s National Institute of Meteorology (INMET). Flooding started in the north of the state and then subsequently inundated more southerly cities including Porto Alegre.

It is the fourth environmental disaster the Rio Grande do Sul has seen in a year after flooding hit in July, September, and November of 2023.

Still reeling from massive flooding, the state now faces the possibility of further storms. Brazil’s national center for natural disasters has warned the region is at “high risk” of more flooding. Weather forecaster MetSul said Rio Grande do Sul could face “very large” floods of “serious proportions”.

The city of Canoas is flooded after heavy rain in Rio Grande do Sul state.

On Wednesday, Porto Alegre officials warned civilian rescuers to halt their operations because of forecasts for rain, lightning, and strong winds. INMET has also forecast a cold front this weekend with additional rains which will be particularly intense in the north and east of the state.

Army General Marcelo Zucco, one of the coordinators of rescue operations, told AP that his team was working at full speed before heavy rains that are forecast to hit the Porto Alegre area this weekend. Some improvement in conditions had helped his tea finally access some areas by land on Wednesday but more rain started to fall on the city that afternoon.
