Arvind Kejriwal’s Arrest and Pranab Mukherjee’s Daughter: “Karma Catches Up”

New Delhi: Sharmistha Mukherjee, the daughter of former President Pranab Mukherjee, accused Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the Anna Hazare group on Friday of making “irresponsible, baseless allegations against then Delhi Chief Minister and Congress leader Sheila Dikshit” in response to Kejriwal’s arrest in connection with the Delhi excise policy case.
She went on to say that in spite of their assertions that they have “trunk loads” of evidence against Dikshit, the public has never seen any of it.

‘Karma catches up!’ was how she concluded her message, implying that the people who made the irrational accusations are now paying a price for their misconduct.

He and the Anna Hazare group were in charge of fabricating the most irrational, ludicrous, and outrageous accusations against Congress, including the claim that he had ‘trunk loads’ of evidence against Sheila Dikshit ji. The ‘trunk’ has not yet been seen by anyone. “Karma comes full circle,” she wrote on X.

Prior to this, Sharmistha Mukherjee said that because of her recent criticism of the party and its leadership, she has been “viciously trolled allegedly by Congress supporters on social media”.

“Ever since my father’s book was published. I learned a lot from his journals and some of his insights about Rahul Gandhi. Pranab stated that Rahul is still developing as a politician and doesn’t appear to be missing very often. Congress has received a lot of acclaim, that “Congress social media had been viciously trolling me. Everything was ignored, and some of the Congress leaders had also been speaking against… Congress social media had been speaking against…”

Mukherjee has previously stated that she was concerned about the party due to the current situation in Congress.”I made a comment in an interview a few days ago on the fringes of the Jaipur Literature Festival, and I was questioned about my opinions regarding the Congress. I was quite explicit in saying that I am a member of Congress and that Congress continues to be very important to American politics. However, she continued, “the Congress ought to look past the Gandhi-Nehru family’s leadership.”

The Congress lost both of its previous Lok Sabha elections when Rahul Gandhi was the party’s face, according to Sharmistha Mukherjee. As a result, the party should choose who to present as its face.

On Thursday, a team from the Enforcement Directorate showed up to Kejriwal’s house to question him about the liquor policy matter. Kejriwal was detained under dramatic circumstances during a search operation at his home after the Delhi High Court denied the AAP convener temporary protection from arrest in the liquor policy case. Later, he was brought to the agency’s headquarters by the Enforcement Directorate. The ED office was also visited by a medical team.

Following Kejriwal’s detention, AAP members and leaders came together in support of the leader, as did leaders of the INDIA bloc. BJP leaders emphasized that “truth had to prevail” and backed the ED’s measures against the chief minister of Delhi.

Leader of the Aam Aadmi Party and Delhi Minister Atishi urged the BJP to stop playing politics behind the Enforcement Directorate on Thursday, citing the arrests of two opposition chief ministers and the freezing of a Congress bank account.

Day after Badaun killings, two families haunted by one question: Why?

A plea to not “encounter” the brother of the man who killed his two sons is the only request Vinod Kumar feels he can make.

A day back, his sons Ayush Pratap (13) and Aahan Pratap (6) were killed, allegedly by a barber, Sajid, in Uttar Pradesh’s Badaun district. Police said they killed Sajid, 30, in an “encounter” two hours later and that his brother Javed, also alleged to be involved in the case, is absconding.

On Wednesday, Kumar was trying to come to terms with the violence that tore through his family. “Police must not ‘encounter’ the second person who is absconding. He must be arrested and should be asked why they did such things to us? Why me? What was the reason? After this, the police can do whatever they want. What harm had those little children done? Bachche toh bas khelna-kudna aur school jana jante hain… I am helpless, I cannot do anything, I am just trying to come to terms with what has happened,” he said while trying to attend to his wife, Sangeeta, who drifts in and out of consciousness.

The killings took place at around 7.30 pm in Baba Colony, just around 500 metres from the Badaun SSP office. Police have not yet ascertained the reason behind the murder.

On Wednesday, several leaders from the state’s ruling BJP visited the family. Sangeeta, the boys’ mother who runs a beauty parlour from her home, could only mumble in response to their condolences and assurances.

Kumar, a contractor in Lakhimpur Kheri district, said his family had no enmity with anyone.

“It was a busy day for me, I could not talk to children in the morning, so they called me in the afternoon around 1 pm. Aahan was very happy. He said, ‘Papa, I have bought clothes and shoes’. I wanted to talk to them later. Lekin ye ghatana ho gayi, bachchon se baat hi khatam ho gayi (But then this incident happened, now there is no way to talk to them),” said the 42-year-old as he entered his house after completing the last rites of his two sons.

His mother, 65-year-old Munni Devi, said Sajid had come to her house seeking money. “He said he needed Rs 5,000 for medical expenses so that he could take his pregnant wife to the hospital. We gave him the money. My daughter-in-law asked him to have tea before he left and went to the kitchen. In the meantime, he took Ayush upstairs on the pretext of seeing the parlour Sangeeta runs. He took him to the roof instead and killed him. Later, when Aahan arrived with a glass of water, he killed him too. It was Piyush (8), the second son, who saw him attacking his brothers. Sajid tried to grab him, but he managed to escape,” said Devi, who works in the Home Guards Department.

Devi said she and her daughter-in-law immediately closed the gate, raised an alarm, and informed police.

“Because the police chowki is just 200 metres away, police arrived immediately and nabbed the attacker. Javed was standing outside on a motorcycle, he fled the spot. Did we do anything wrong by helping a person? All the people in the colony used to get their hair cut from his shop. Those two used to call him bhaiyya (brother) and get their hair cut. How can he do something like this to those children,” said Devi. She demanded that the second accused person, Javed, be nabbed and interrogated about their motive.

Even the accused’s family said they were searching for answers.

“Someone has called and implicated him in the case. He had a very good relationship with that family. He has been running a barber shop there for about 12 years. He used to go to their house during festivals and used to eat together. When police caught him, they should have at least asked why he did this,” said Naazreen, Sajid’s mother, at her house in Sakhanu village, 14 kilometres away from the spot of the killing.

Naazreen said she used to take him to a dargah for around 9 years as he was “not well mentally”.

“When he improved and was at peace, I brought him back home from the dargah. After that I got him married. He had two children but they died. Yesterday, he had left home happily,” said the woman.

Naazreen said her younger son Javed did not accompany Sajid.

Both have been booked under IPC Sections 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint), 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder).

“Law and order is normal. There is no problem in the city. Deployments have been made everywhere. Sajid had run away after the incident, the people tried to nab him. The police laid siege and he died in retaliatory firing. Javed has also been named in the complaint given by the family. We are searching for him. No criminal history of the accused has been found yet. The motive is being ascertained,” said SSP Badaun Alok Priyadarshi.

Ex-cop Pradeep Sharma Gets Life Term In 2006 Mumbai Fake Encounter Case!

The Bombay High Court upheld life sentences given to 12 other cops over the 2006 killing of the alleged member of Chhota Rajan’s gang.

SETTING ASIDE his acquittal by a sessions court, the Bombay High Court on Tuesday convicted and sentenced former Mumbai police officer Pradeep Sharma to life imprisonment in the 2006 fake encounter killing of Ramnarayan Gupta alias Lakhan Bhaiya, an alleged member of the Chhota Rajan gang.

The court directed Sharma, considered an “encounter specialist”, to surrender within three weeks.

Allowing the state government’s appeal against Sharma’s acquittal in July 2013, a bench of Justices Revati Mohite-Dere and Gauri V Godse in its 867-page judgement held that the trial court’s finding was “perverse and unsustainable”.

Convicting Sharma of murder and other charges, it observed that the prosecution proved that Lakhan Bhaiya “was killed by the police, by trigger-happy cops, and the same was made to look like a genuine encounter”.

The bench also upheld the conviction of 12 other policemen and a civilian, Hitesh Solanki, in the case. However, it acquitted six others — Manoj Mohan Raj, Shailendra Pandey, Sunil Solanki, Mohamed Shaikh, Akhil Khan and Suresh Shetty.

The convicted policemen are Dilip Palande, Nitin Sartape, Ganesh Harpude, Anand Patade, Prakash Kadam, Devidas Sakpal, Pandurang Kokam, Ratnakar Kamble, Sandeep Sardar, Tanaji Desai, Pradeep Suryavanshi and Vinayak Shinde.

The bench observed that while Lakhan Bhaiya had 10 cases against him, that by itself would not give the accused the “license to kill” him.

“Instead of upholding the rule of law, the police have misused their position and uniform, and have killed Ramnarayan in cold blood,” the bench said.

It emphasised that “death in police custody must be curbed with a heavy hand and must be viewed seriously” and there can be “no room for leniency as persons involved are the arm of state whose duty is to protect citizens and not to take law into their hands”.

The bench also said that since Janardan Bhange, a civilian, and police inspector Arvind Sarvankar had died in judicial custody during pendency of the appeals, their appeals stood abated.

It, however, observed that it was a “matter of shame” that the killers of a prime witness, Anil Bheda, who was murdered “in a gruesome manner” on March 13, 2011 — four days after the charges were framed – were not booked and there was “absolutely no progress” in case by state CID for more than a decade. Bheda’s burnt body was found and identified on the basis of a DNA sample, it said.

“It is travesty of justice for his family,” the bench said, adding that “the police have hardly taken any pains” to nab the perpetrators. The police should investigate the murder to “take the case to its logical end, lest people lose faith in the system”, it said.

The bench held that the trial court acquitted Sharma despite observing the ballistic evidence being “weak” in the case and “overlooked” that other accused were deputed to work under him and that Sharma was present at the crime spot. It said there was evidence of witnesses, including Bheda, stating that they were threatened by lawyers and family members of the accused “to toe a particular line and to leave the city”.

The fake encounter of Lakhan Bhaiya took place on November 11, 2006, near Nana Nani Park in Versova, hours after he was picked up along with a friend from Vashi.

An FIR was registered in 2009 on the High Court’s orders after a special investigation team found that a rival of Lakhan Bhaiya had paid the policemen to kill him.

In July 2013, the sessions court awarded life sentences to 21 men, including 13 police personnel, but acquitted Sharma.

In their appeal, the state government, through special public prosecutor Rajiv Chavan and advocate Ram Prasad Gupta, Lakhan Bhaiya’s brother, submitted in the High Court that the encounter was staged and records were fabricated by the accused.

Sharma, who was earlier arrested by the National Investigation Agency in connection with the Antilia terror threat case and the murder of businessman Mansukh Hiran, was granted bail by the Supreme Court in August last year.

The culprit, named as Sajid, arrived and waited for some time before killing them, according to Bareilly Inspector-General of Police Rakesh Kumar. He then came down, and the throng attempted to keep him back, but he fled…When police learned that the accused had escaped, they acted quickly…Badaun SSP Alok Priyadarshi informed ANI that the accused fired at the police and was killed in retaliation.

He stated that the murder weapon and pistol had been recovered. In the FIR, the family of the murdered children names the accused’s brother, Javed. “Teams are working to find him, and he will be arrested soon,” the SSP announced.

Who is the accused and why did he kill the children?

IG Rakesh Kumar said the accused is aged between 25 and 30 years. “We will be disclosing their details after further investigation,” he said.

When asked about the motive behind the murders, Badaun district magistrate (DM) Manoj Kumar said, “The reason for the murder is not clear yet. It will be found out during the investigation.”

Reports, however, claimed that there was some dispute over money which led to the incident. The SSP, citing the victim’s family, said the accused had demanded ₹5,000 from the father of the deceased children. He said the police were now investigating what led to the murder.

Tension in Badaun

Heavy police security was deployed at the Baba Colony located near the Mandi Samiti outpost as locals protested against the ghastly double murder.

NDTV reported that angry locals set a shop on fire after the incident in Baba Colony. The situation is now under control, the police said.

District magistrate Manoj Kumar said some people got agitated after the incident and they have been asked to maintain peace.

“We received information this evening that at Baba colony near the Mandi Samiti police outpost, a man entered a house and murdered two young children. After the incident, some people got agitated. The people have been asked to maintain peace,” Manoj Kumar told ANI. He added that the bodies have been sent for postmortem. “We have assured them that an investigation will be carried out,” the DM said.

Medanta chairman promotes weight loss drug in ‘deep fake’ video, case filed

The Gurugram Police has registered a case concerning a social media clip publicizing a drug with a fake testimony of Medanta Hospital chairman Dr Naresh Trehan.

Medanta chairman

The Gurugram Police has registered a case concerning a social media clip publicising a drug with the fake testimony of Medanta Hospital chairman Dr Naresh Trehan.

According to the Cyber Crime unit of the police, the FIR has been registered under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against “unknown persons” in connection with the case.

The case came after a video of Dr Trehan went viral on social media in which he was seen participating in a TV show and recommending an anti-obesity medicine.

As the video went viral, a case was filed by the hospital’s assistant vice president (AVP) for marketing, Harish Aswani, saying that a fabricated video had surfaced on social media that contained misleading information about medical treatment.

“The deepfake video features our CMD (chairman and managing director) Dr. Naresh Trehan, who can be seen endorsing this particular medication. Dr. Naresh Trehan is one of the most trusted clinicians in the country and this video damages the reputation of Dr. Trehan and Medanta Hospitals,” news agency PTI quoted Aswami as saying in the case.

“Furthermore, it may lead to unwarranted scepticism and apprehension among patients who rely on accurate and reliable information for their medical needs,” it added.

Notably, deepfake is a technology that uses AI to doctor pictures or videos in such a manner that the person can impersonate anyone and say something or do activities that never actually occurred.

Following the complaint, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered at a local police station of Gurugram.
