Prime Minister subtle jab at Mamata Banerjee: “My nephew doesn’t need my help.”

PM Modi took a swipe at Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and said that he does not have to do anything for his nephews or brothers.

  • PM Modi took a swipe at Mamata Banerjee, her nephew Abhishek
  • PM Modi claimed he works for the poor, Dalit and tribals
  • He criticised Trinamool Congress for the ‘teacher recruitment scam’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday took a veiled dig at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and said that he does not have to do anything for any of his nephews. The Prime Minister’s remarks were an apparent reference to Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee.

“Modi does not have to do anything for himself. Neither do I have to do anything for any of my nephews nor do I have to leave anything for any brother. I have to work for the people living in the forests of Bankura. I have to leave a developed India as a legacy for the children of poor, Dalit and tribals, so I have come to seek your blessings for the third time,” PM Modi said while addressing an election rally in Bishnupur.

Further in his speech, PM Modi also lashed out at the TMC and said that the party has not even spared the children of the state in its hunger for money.

“TMC has not even spared your children in its hunger for money. Here the ‘teacher recruitment scam’ has put the future of the youth as well as the coming generations at stake. Poor parents sold their houses and lands, took loans and bribed their (TMC) ministers. Today all those youth are on the streets,” he said.

“What was their fault after all? I guarantee you all, they have got your houses sold, Modi is going to get the bungalows of the corrupt TMC people, their cars, everything sold,” he added.

The Prime Minister also hit out at the INDIA bloc, including TMC, the Left and the Congress and said that they look like three different parties, but their sins are the same.

“They have always given slogans to the poor, labourers, SCs and STs, but wherever they ran the government, they left those states poor and West Bengal is an example of this,” he said.

Swati Maliwal Case: ‘Slapped 7-8 Times, Kicked in Chest, Stomach’, FIR Details Against Arvind Kejriwal’s PA Bibhav Kumar.

Swati Maliwal detailed a harrowing account, accusing Mr Kumar of slapping her 7-8 times on the face and hitting her chest, stomach, and sensitive parts.

Slapped, dragged, and kicked in the chest – AAP leader Swati Maliwal’s complaint against Bibhav Kumar, an aide of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, raises serious charges of assault. Ms. Maliwal claims that on Monday morning, she was assaulted by Mr. Kumar in the drawing room of the Chief Minister’s official residence, with Mr. Kejriwal present in the house at the time.

In the FIR filed last night, Ms Maliwal said she arrived at Arvind Kejriwal’s home at 6, Flag Staff Road, Civil Lines, and attempted to contact the chief minister’s aide but received no response. She said she informed the staff of her presence and was asked to wait in the drawing room.

She alleged that while she was waiting, Bibhav Kumar burst into the room and started verbally abusing her. Ms Maliwal gave harrowing details, accusing Mr Kumar of slapping her seven times on the face and hitting her chest, stomach, and sensitive parts. “Bibhav came and started abusing and kept slapping without provocation,” Ms Maliwal claimed in her complaint. “I made noise and said ‘Let me go’, but he kept beating me continuously and abusing me in Hindi. He threatened, ‘We will see, we will deal with it’. I informed him that I was menstruating and in considerable pain, begging him to leave me alone.”

“I felt absolutely shocked and was screaming for help over and over again. In order to protect myself, I pushed him away with my legs. At that time, he pounced on me, brutally dragged and deliberately pulled my shirt up,” the FIR reads. “Bibhav Kumar did not relent and attacked me by kicking me in my chest, stomach and pelvis area with his legs.”

Ms Maliwal added in her complaint that she managed to run out of the house and call the police.

“I was in a terrible state of shock at this attack. I was deeply traumatised and called the 112 number and reported the incident,” Mr Maliwal stated in the FIR.

When the security personnel arrived, instead of assisting Ms Maliwal, they allegedly followed Mr Kumar’s instruction to throw her out. Despite her condition, she was forced to leave and wait outside the Chief Minister’s residence until the police arrived.

“Bibhav came back with the security personnel working at the main gate. I kept telling them that I was brutally beaten up and they should look at my condition and wait until the police comes but they asked me to leave the premises,” Ms Maliwal’s statement reads.

Late last night, Delhi Police escorted Ms Maliwal to the AIIMS Trauma Centre for a medical checkup. When the police reached Mr Kumar’s residence in the Chandrawal Nagar area of the national capital, he was missing. Teams from the Crime Branch and Special Cell are looking for Mr Kumar, aiming to bring him into custody.

The Delhi Police registered an FIR under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including assault or criminal force on a woman with intent to outrage her modesty, criminal intimidation, insulting modesty, and assault. The FIR was filed after Ms Maliwal’s statement was recorded by a police team led by Additional Commissioner PS Kushwaha.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has stepped into the controversy, summoning Mr Kumar for a hearing today.

Following the police visit, Ms Maliwal posted on social media about the distressing experience and appealed against politicising the issue.

“What happened to me was very bad. I have given my statement to the police on the incident that happened to me. I hope that appropriate action will be taken. The last few days have been very difficult for me. I thank those who prayed for me. Those who tried to do character assassination said that I was doing it on the instructions of a party. May God keep them happy too. An important election is underway in the country. Swati Maliwal is not important, the issues of the country are important. There is a special request to the BJP to not do politics on this incident,” Ms Maliwal posted last night.

Mamata Banerjee, “PART OF INDIA” “You should not trust,” Adhir Ranjan says.

The incident has triggered a political storm. The BJP has heavily criticized Mr Kejriwal for his silence, with its spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia even going as far as labeling Mr. Kejriwal the “main criminal” due to his apparent inaction during the assault.

Mr Kejriwal deflected questions regarding the incident during a press conference in Lucknow yesterday, where he appeared alongside Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav and AAP MP Sanjay Singh. Mr Singh, addressing the press, acknowledged Mr Kumar’s misconduct and deflected criticism towards the BJP, demanding accountability for various women’s issues under their governance.

The Congress, allied with AAP in the opposition INDIA bloc for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, echoed similar calls.

Kapil Sibal calls Amit Shah’s Bail Statement to Kejriwal “Objectionable.”

Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal on Thursday hit out at Home Minister Amit Shah over his reported “special treatment” remarks on the interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, saying it was an “objectionable statement” that questioned the intention of the Supreme Court judges.

Sibal’s remarks came after Shah while referring to the interim bail granted by the Supreme Court to Kejriwal, reportedly said many in the country believed he was given special treatment.

The Supreme Court on Thursday steered clear of the political talk about it has made an exception for Kejriwal in granting him interim bail for campaigning in the Lok Sabha polls but said: “critical analysis of the judgment is welcome”.

Addressing a press conference in the national capital, Sibal said, “Shah has made an objectionable statement and questioned the intention of the Supreme Court judges.”
Shah has stated very cleverly that many people are saying the Supreme Court’s decision to grant interim bail to Kejriwal in the excise policy case is akin to him getting special treatment, he added.

“He (Shah) has said ‘people are saying’. If people are saying and you don’t believe in it, then why say it? If people say and you believe it, then only you have made the statement,” said Sibal, who is also a senior advocate.

Sibal said it is important to spell out the laws in light of the statement.

“If someone is convicted but gets a stay from the court, he or she can file a nomination and get elected. If there is a charge sheet against anyone, a person can campaign and also file a nomination, like Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh is doing,” the Rajya Sabha MP said.

“One who just has allegations against him cannot campaign, what kind of a statement is this?” Sibal said, hitting out at Shah.

He probably does not know the law, otherwise he would not have made the statement, Sibal said.

Slamming Shah, Sibal said, “He (Shah) says ‘if we win 400 seats, we will take back PoK’. What if you don’t get that many seats, won’t you take back PoK? We want you to take it back. Firstly, you should take back those 4,000 kilometers that China has taken away…”
Asked about the alleged assault on AAP MP Swati Maliwal at Kejriwal’s residence, Sibal said, “Why is he (Shah) worried about this (Maliwal assault case)? It’s an internal matter of AAP. You think about Prajwal (Revanna), why don’t you give statements on that? That is the internal matter of JD(S), you are silent there and the prime minister is also silent.

Mamata Banerjee, “PART OF INDIA” “You should not trust,” Adhir Ranjan says.

On Wednesday Mamata Banerjee – who had seemed to put her membership of the INDIA bloc on hold – said she would provide “outside support” in the event the group won the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

The Congress’ Bengal boss, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, on Thursday, weighed in on the ‘is she, isn’t she’ll debate over Mamata Banerjee’s membership of the INDIA bloc, shortly before the Chief Minister said she remains a key part of the opposition grouping, which she called her “brainchild”.

On Ms Banerjee’s “… will provide outside support (if the group wins the election)” comment Wednesday, Mr Chowdhury declared, “I don’t trust her… she left the alliance. She can also go towards the BJP.”

“What she will do from outside (the alliance) or inside… I don’t know. That you have to ask her,” the Congress leader told reporters, “But I don’t trust her. She left the alliance… she could even run to BJP.”

Mr. Chowdhury – there is little love lost between him and Ms. Banerjee, a fact underlined by the latter yesterday explicitly stating “… INDIA alliance doesn’t count Bengal Congress…” – also said, “Whatever complaints she has (about the bloc) she should have raised earlier when it was created.”

DHFL Fraud: CBI Arrests Dheeraj Wadhawan in a Case Involving a Rs 34,000 Crore Bank Loan Scam.

Mr Chowdhury further pointed out the apparent U-turn came after polling for nearly 70 per cent of all Lok Sabha seats, with the opposition bloc claiming big advances in its bid to oust the ruling BJP.

“They (referring to the BJP) were talking about destroying Congress and that Congress would not get 40 seats… but now (what) she is saying means Congress and INDIA are coming to power,” he said, appearing to suggest Ms Banerjee’s about-face followed a realisation the BJP will likely be defeated.

A day earlier Ms Banerjee – who had put her membership of the bloc on hold after public spats over seat-sharing deals – declared she would provide “outside support” in the event of an election win.

“We will give leadership to INDIA and help… from outside. We will form a Mamata Banerjee government so our Bengal mothers and sisters… and those who work in 100-days job scheme do not face problems,” she said.

This afternoon, at a poll rally in Tamluk, Ms Banerjee underlined her position, saying, “I am very much part of INDIA… it was my brainchild. We are together at national level and will continue to be together.”

Ms Banerjee did, though, make it clear – yesterday and today – that she does not see the Congress’ state unit and the CPM, as allies. The Congress and the CPM, which is also part of the INDIA bloc, are allied in Bengal (but rivals in Kerala), but have fielded candidates against the Trinamool.

The Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has frequently attacked the Mr Chowdhury-led Congress unit, and the CPM, as having unofficially joined the BJP. “They are not with us… they are with the BJP here.”

Earlier this year, as the Congress was scrambling to confirm seat-share deals with INDIA allies ahead of voting for the 2024 Lok Sabha election, Ms Banerjee – seen as one of the group’s more cantankerous members – refused to play ball, insisting she would not give up more seats to that party than necessary.

She pointed to the Congress’ abysmal record in the 2019 election – in which it won just two of 42 seats – and insisted her party had the best chance to defeat the BJP in the state.

Bengal has 42 Lok Sabha seats, of which the Trinamool won 22 last time and the BJP got 18, and Ms Banerjee reasoned the Congress simply did not have the clout to stop the saffron party in the state.

After a tension-filled few weeks in January and February, Ms Banerjee walked away from the bloc.

“Desh mein koi maai ka laal,” Attacks the INDIA Party for Spreading False Information Regarding CAA.

During his speech at an Azamgarh rally, Prime Minister Modi further claimed that the CAA is the INDIA most recent manifestation of ‘Modi’s assurance’ and that the Congress has been persecuting refugees for decades.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chastised the Opposition for supposedly attempting to incite unrest in the nation by disseminating false information over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). According to the Prime Minister, the Citizenship by Association (CAA) has already begun to provide Indian citizenship to refugees, and no one can “end the CAA,” despite claims to the contrary from the INDIA bloc.

Speaking at a gathering in Azamgarh, he further claimed that the CAA is the most recent manifestation of “Modi’s guarantee” and that the Congress has been persecuting refugees for decades. Under the CAA, the process of granting Indian citizenship to refugees has already begun. They are the ones who have to suffer as a result of the country’s religious division; they have all lived in our nation for a considerable amount of time, according to Prime Minister Modi.

“These (Congress) politicians use Mahatma Gandhi’s name to ascend to positions of power, but they are forgetting his exact words. Minorities residing in adjacent countries were assured by Mahatma Gandhi that they were free to visit India at any time. Thousands of families have sought refuge in India over the past 70 years in order to protect their religious and cultural traditions. But since they were not Congress’s voting bloc, Congress never bothered to consider them. The Prime Minister declared, “SP, Congress, and INDIA bloc are trying to incite riots in the country by spreading false information about CAA.”

PM Modi further said that he “unmasked” the intentions of Congress and SP, adding that they can not end CAA. “It’s Modi who has unmasked you. You are a hypocrite, communal. You left this nation to burn in the communal fire for 60 years. I am saying it clearly, it’s Modi’s guarantee: ‘desh-videsh kahin se bhi, jo bhi taakat ikatthi karni hai kar lo’… You can’t end CAA. We are working on giving citizenship to those who are victims of partition, which has already started under CAA,” he added.

PM Modi further said that the excitement shown by the people of Srinagar in the polls is proof that no one can bring back Article 370 and do politics of “vote bank.” “Desh mein koi maai ka laal paida hua hai jo CAA hata sake? (has anyone been born in this country who can repeal the CAA?). Nobody can remove the CAA,” PM Modi said.

On Wednesday, the central government handed over the first set of citizenship certificates, over two months after notifying the rules for the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla handed over citizenship certificates to some applicants. The Home Secretary congratulated the applicants and highlighted salient features of the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024, as per a statement by the Union Home Ministry.

The CAA, introduced by the Narendra Modi government and passed by Parliament in 2019, aims to confer Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim migrants–including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians–who migrated from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan and arrived in India before December 31, 2014.

2 Suspected Bangladeshi Terrorists Arrested From Guwahati Railway Station.

Guwahati: Two suspected terrorists from Bangladesh, linked to the Al Qaeda terror group, were arrested in Guwahati for illegally entering India, police said on Monday.

Acting on a tip-off, the police arrested the two Bangladeshis from Guwahati railway station yesterday. They were in the city to radicalise the youth, said police.

The two suspected terrorists were identified as Bahar Mia, 30, from Brahmanbari district and Rasel Mia, 40, from Netrokona district of Bangladesh. They belonged to the Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), linked to the banned Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) terror group, police said.

DHFL Fraud: CBI Arrests Dheeraj Wadhawan in a Case Involving a Rs 34,000 Crore Bank Loan Scam.

This case, which concerns the purported deception of 17 banks, is being referred to as India’s biggest banking loan scam.

In connection with the bank fraud investigation involving Dewan Housing Finance Corporation Ltd (DHFL) around Rs 34,000 crore, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) detained Dheeraj Wadhawan on Tuesday.

This case, which concerns the purported deception of 17 banks, is being referred to as India’s biggest banking loan scam.

Wadhawan was already charged by the central agency in 2022 for his involvement in this case. Wadhawan was previously arrested by the CBI as part of the Yes Bank corruption investigation and then freed on bond.

The Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has ordered the attachment of bank accounts, shares, and mutual fund holdings of erstwhile DHFL promoters, Dheeraj and Kapil Wadhawan, in February 2021 in an attempt to recover outstanding dues of Rs 22 lakh.

The Wadhawan brothers’ inability to pay the fee levied on them in July of last year for violating disclosure standards led to the ruling.

The outstanding debts owed by each of the Wadhawans total Rs 10.6 lakh and include the original penalties, interest, and recovery expenses. The Wadhawan brothers, who were DHFL promoters at the time, were hit with penalties of Rs 10 lakh each by SEBI in July 2023 (now Piramal Finance). The violation of disclosure laws that went unreported led to the fine.

Dheeraj Wadhawan was a non-executive director of DHFL, while Kapil Wadhawan held the positions of Chairman and Managing Director. The administrative board of DHFL included both brothers.

In response to Dheeraj Wadhawan’s request for medical release, the Delhi High Court last Saturday sent a notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

After his bail request for medical reasons was denied by a trial judge, Wadhawan filed an appeal with the High judge. Wadhawan underwent spinal surgery and is now recovering at his Mumbai home. The CBI has been instructed by Justice Jyoti Singh to provide a response, and a hearing has been set for this Friday, May 17.

Day After 14 Deaths, Mumbai Billboard Collapse Is Blame Game.

Mumbai: A day after the deadly collapse of a 14,400 square foot billboard in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar – 14 people were killed and 74 others injured after the creaking 100-foot metal structure, buffeted by strong winds, fell on and crushed a petrol station – the human cost of the tragedy has been underlined. Family members of those who were crushed spoke to Tuesday morning, explaining how and why their loved ones were at the scene of the disaster – whether as staff at the petrol station or customers.

“My brother, an auto driver, went to fill CNG. He was in line when the hoarding fell on him. We went but the police would not let us approach. Then they sent us to the hospital, where we had to show photos to confirm he had died,” one man said.

He appealed to the state for help, saying his brother was the family’s primary earner. “We are poor people… where will go, what will we do? My brother was responsible for us… he also left behind a wife and child. There should be an investigation.”

Another distraught kin – whose nephew, Sachin Yadav, worked at the petrol station, told NDTV the family would have never sent the 23-year-old to work there if told about the dispute behind the legality of the billboard. “My brother’s son… he was working there for two years. We found out only yesterday night that he had been crushed by the billboard. We rushed there but there was such a commotion that no one could tell us anything. Only at 4 am we were told to go to the hospital.”

Sachin Yadav, 23, was one of those who was killed in the Mumbai billboard collapse.

Some family members have also questioned the state government’s compensation of ₹ 5 lakh per death, pointing out many of those who were crushed to death had young children.

“My cousin brother (who died)… his child has just given her Class 10 exam. Will ₹ 5 lakh be enough for her education? How will his family survive now on this amount? And even if they can, it will take five-six months for the money to come. What will they do till then? They must think about this…”

21 Hours Later, Rescue Ops Continue

The aftermath of the horrible incident – search and rescue ops to save more people and, possibly, recover more bodies – continued into Tuesday afternoon, more than 21 hours after the collapse. Rescue ops included teams from the NDRF, or National Disaster Response Force, as well as earth-movers from the BMC, and teams of emergency medical personnel. Gas-cutters have also been deployed, but there are concerns over using these, given the accident site is a petrol station.

The NDRF is using two cranes – each weighing 500 tons – to shift the metal debris and create tunnels into which rescue personnel can crawl and pull out those trapped inside.

“Painful, Sad Incident”, Says Chief Minister

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi today as Prime Minister Narendra Modi filed his nomination papers for the 2024 Lok Sabha election, visited the site of the tragedy and has announced ex-gratia of ₹ 5 lakh per death.

“It is a painful and sad incident… I visited the spot yesterday. The government will bear all expenses of people injured. ₹ 5 lakh as compensation will be given to the next of kin (and) strict action will be taken against the owner of the hoarding.”

President Droupadi Murmu has also reacted. She posted a statement on X (formerly Twitter), “News of several casualties due to the collapse of a hoarding in Ghatkopar area of Mumbai is extremely sad. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured and wish for the success of the relief and rescue operations.”

Officials’ Blame Game Over Billboard Collapse

Meanwhile, the hoarding collapse has also triggered (an entirely predictable) blame game.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has declared the billboard – a 120 X 120 foot structure reportedly in the Limca Book of Records – was “illegal”, i.e., it did not give the advertising agency permission to erect that and other such structures.

Also, according to officials cited by news agency PTI, the BMC limits billboard sizes to 40 x 40 foot only.

“We have ordered action against all illegal hoardings in the city. We are starting today. A case has been filed in this case (as) this hoarding did not have permission. A complaint was also received that some trees had been cut so this hoarding could be visible. We have filed a case in this regard too,” BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani told reporters.

However, the ad agency – Ego Media, which built four hoardings – each 100-150 metres from the other – on land leased by the Maharashtra government to the Police Welfare Corporation – is understood have to received ‘permission’ from the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Railways). The land had initially been given to the Government Railway Police, officials said.

The civic body has issued a notice demanding the hoardings still standing be taken down.

The GRP, however, has pitched responsibility Mumbai back to the civic body, saying it does not have the equipment to take the structures down and asked the BMC to act instead. In a statement, the GRP said then Mumbai Police Commissioner, Qaiser Khalid, had given permission – a 10-year lease on the land – to Ego Media.

Indian Army Officer Killed in Strike on UN Vehicle in Rafah.

The officer, who attended the National Defence Academy, was commissioned in the army in 2000 and chose a few years ago to retire early.

The first international UN staff member to die since the beginning of the Israel-Hamas conflict was an Indian Army officer who had worked for the UN Department of Safety and Security (DSS). He was murdered when his vehicle was targeted in Rafah, Gaza.

The UN confirmed on Tuesday that a staff member of the DSS was killed and another was injured when their UN vehicle was “struck” as they travelled to the European Hospital in Rafah on Monday. Condemning all attacks on UN personnel, Secretary-General António Guterres called for a full investigation.

Sushil Kumar Modi, Bihar Former Deputy Chief Minister, Passes Away at 72

The identity of the deceased DSS staff member was not revealed but people familiar with the matter said on condition of anonymity that he was a former infantry officer of the Indian Army.

An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, the officer was commissioned in the army in 2000 and had opted for premature retirement a few years ago, the people said. He had begun working for the DSS a short while ago, they said.

Farhan Haq, the deputy spokesman for the UN secretary-general, said the UN was gathering information on the incident. He confirmed that the security personnel killed was an international staff member, marking the first such UN death in the Gaza conflict. “Of UN staff, I believe I’ve not been previously aware of an international casualty,” he said.

There was no immediate word from Indian officials on the development. The Indian side has called for an immediate end to the fighting, release of hostages taken by Hamas during the October 7 terror attacks last year, resumption of humanitarian aid, and a return to dialogue aimed at a two-state solution.

Guterres said in a post on X that a UN vehicle “was struck in Gaza, killing one of our colleagues & injuring another”. More than 190 UN staff members have been killed in Gaza, he added.

“Humanitarian workers must be protected. I condemn all attacks on UN personnel and reiterate my urgent appeal for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire & the release of all hostages,” Guterres said.

Haq said Guterres had called for a full investigation. “He sends his condolences to the family of the fallen staff member,” he added.

In Mumbai, a Hoarding Collapse Incident Resulted in 9 Deaths and 70 Injuries.

He said the UN vehicle was headed to the European Hospital in Rafah as part of the “regular work” of DSS staff going to different locations to assess security conditions.

Separately, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, or UNRWA, reported another of its staff members was killed in the war, taking the total number to 188. The senior projects officer was killed on Sunday in an Israeli strike in the central town of Deir Al Balah, after leaving Rafah.

In April, seven volunteers of the World Central Kitchen were killed in an Israeli air strike in Gaza. Among the dead was Zomi Frankcom, who was of Indian origin.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has said that between October 7, 2023 and May 12, 2024, at least 35,091 Palestinians have been killed and 78,827 injured in Gaza.

The October 7 terror attacks by Hamas killed some 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals.
