Nishant Dev Enters Pre-quarterfinals of World Olympic Boxing Qualifiers!

Nishant Dev won by an unanimous 5-0 margin to advance to the pre-quarterfinals.

Nishant Dev

World Championships bronze-medallist Nishant Dev out-punched Georgia’s Madiev Eskerkhan to enter the men’s 71kg category pre-quarterfinals of the first World Olympic Boxing Qualifiers. The Indian won by a unanimous 5-0 margin on Thursday night.

Tokyo Olympics quarterfinalist Eskerkhan looked clueless against the Indian’s attack. He tried his best to recover in the second round but Nishant denied him any chance of a comeback. Nishant will play his Round of 16 bout on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the youth world champion Ankushita Boro (66kg) and national champion Sanjeet (92kg) suffered contrasting defeats in the opening round. While Ankushita went down fighting 2-3 against Sonvico Emilie of France, Sanjeet lost 0-5 to Aibek Oralbay of Kazakhstan, continuing what has overall been a poor outing for the country’s boxers.

This tournament, featuring over 590 boxers, offers a total of 49 quotas, including 28 for men and 21 for women for the 2024 Paris Olympics. India have already secured four quotas for Paris with Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Preeti (54kg), Parveen Hooda (57kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) confirming their berths at the Asian Games. The second World Qualification Tournament will be held in Bangkok from May 23 to June 3.

Rohit Sharma puts Sarfaraz Khan ‘in his place’ after DRS drama in India vs England 5th Test in Dharamsala!

Shortly after the DRS drama, Rohit Sharma was seen showing Sarfaraz Khan and Yashasvi Jaiswal their fielding position in a manner that left them laughing.

 India vs England

Being one of the senior-most members of the squad, in the absence of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma has been more than just a captain for the Indian team in the ongoing series against England. Leading a gang of novices, which only includes the batting line-up, Rohit has played the role of a mentor for the young players, whether guiding them during their knocks or while fielding. On Thursday, shortly after the DRS drama, Rohit was seen showing Sarfaraz Khan and Yashasvi Jaiswal their fielding positions in a manner that left them laughing.

It happened in the 39th over when Jonny Bairstow took guard against Kuldeep Yadav. Rohit wanted a fielder closer on the leg side. Sarfaraz has been stationed at the forward short leg for the better part of the series since his debut in Rajkot in the third match. However, the youngster was moved to a much finer position, somewhere between leg slip and short leg. And Rohit did that in the most Rohit Sharma way possible. He called Sarfaraz, lifted him up and then placed him in that position before marking it with his shoe.

This happened just a couple of overs after the DRS drama that unfolded over India’s missed opportunity to get Zak Crawley out early.

It happened in the 26th over of the innings when Crawley, on 61, looked to glance the delivery towards the leg side after it turned. The ball took the faintest edge of the bat and Sarfaraz dived to complete the catch. He began celebrating immediately, but there was a major confusion among the players on whether it was a legit dismissal.

Rohit quickly walked towards wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel, who did not seem convinced at all, but Sarfaraz kept pleading his case. Eventually, following a long discussion, Rohit opted not to review. The replay later showed spikes on the UltraEdge, leaving Sarfaraz with an ‘I told you’ smile at the Indian skipper, who then acknowledged the mistake and gave a thumbs up to the player.

India dominate Day 1 in Dharamsala

As far as the proceedings of Day 1 were concerned, it was India all the way. Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav ran through England’s top and middle-order with a record-breaking spell of bowling before Ravichandran Ashwin, in his 100th Test, made light work of the lower order. India bowled England out for 218 after Ben Stokes opted to bat.

In reply, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma gave India a rollicking start, which they have done so often in this series. Jaiswal became the second Indian batter after Sunil Gavaskar to score more than 700 runs in a series. The left-hander was out for 57 off 58 balls while trying to hit Shoaib Bashir for a lofted shot. Rohit (52*) and Shubam Gill (26*) made sure there were no further losses as India reached 135/1 at stumps, trailing England by just 83 runs.

Indian Street Premier League (ISPL 2024)

The Gully Cricket Tournament, also known as the Celebrity Premier League, officially began play yesterday, according to online rumors! T10 cricket is a new format that is being played in stadiums, having been around for about 20 years after T20 cricket. The Indian Street Premier League (ISPL) is the inaugural T10 tennis ball competition.

Six clubs from major Indian cities—Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, and Srinagar—are participating in the Indian Super League (IPL). From March 6 to March 15, 2024, these teams will play 19 games, all of which will be held in Mumbai.

In contrast to traditional cricket, the Indian Super League (IPL) seeks to transform the game by giving street cricket talent a global platform. It aims to develop the next generation of cricket players and infuse city cricket with a fresh degree of structure.

Essentially, the Indian Super League (IPL) is a tennis-ball cricket add-on that seeks to highlight street cricket players’ unbridled talent and enthusiasm on a large scale.

ISPL T10 Rules & Regulations

The ISPL, cricket’s latest addition, has brought several innovative concepts to the table. Let’s discuss about them little bit:

  • Tip Toss: The tournament has given a unique name to the toss, inspired by street cricket. For those familiar with street cricket rules, this is self-explanatory.
  • Powerplay Rules: Similar to limited-overs’ games, the first few overs are mandatory powerplays. In the ISPL, the mandatory powerplay consists of two overs, with one over designated as the batting powerplay. During the mandatory powerplay, only two fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle. For the batting powerplay, three fielders are permitted outside the circle. The batting powerplay of one over must be taken between overs 3-9.
  • Super Over: In the event of a tie, a Super Over, similar to a T20 match, will be played to determine the winner. This process continues until there is a clear winner.
  • 9 Street Runs: A unique concept introduced in this tournament awards nine runs to the batting team if the ball goes over the fence and lands among the audience, instead of the regular six in cricket.
  • 50-50 Over: Each team’s captain must select five bowlers from the playing XI who can bowl this over during an innings. In a 50-50 over, one team sets a score, and the other team must chase it down. Failure to do so results in a deduction from the final score. This was demonstrated in an exhibition match between Masters XI and Khiladi XI, where Masters XI failed to chase down a target of 16 runs, resulting in a seven-run deduction.
  • Tape Ball Over: While the entire match is played with a tennis ball, one or a maximum of two overs out of the 10 must be bowled with a tape ball. A tape ball is a tennis ball covered with tape, producing the same amount of swing in the air as a normal cricket ball. However, a tape-ball over cannot be used for a 50-50 over.
  • Fielding Restrictions: A maximum of five fielders are allowed outside the circle during the non-powerplay overs. Each team cannot have more than five fielders on the leg side and two behind the popping crease when a ball is being bowled.
  • Playing XI and Substitutions: Each team can select two substitutes during a match. An injured player can be replaced by an unsold player from the same zone. Every team in the inaugural ISPL can have a maximum of 16 players, with the playing XI including one player from each of the North, South, East, West, and Central zones. Additionally, a player under 19 years of age must also be included in the XI.

India vs England Live Score 5th Test Day 1, IND vs ENG: Kuldeep Yadav takes 3rd wicket, Zak Crawley misses out on ton!

India vs England Live Score 5th Test Day 1, IND vs ENG: India have kept the pressure up and Kuldeep got his third wicket of the day with an unplayable delivery.

India vs England Live Score

India vs England Live Score 5th Test Day 1, IND vs ENG: India have been relentless with their pressure but England have managed to wring out the runs in what has been a neck and neck contest in the first two sessions of Day 1 of the fifth Test in Dharamsala. Kuldeep Yadav has been the player who has reaped the dividents, taking all three of England’s wickets.

India got a boost late in the first session with Kuldeep Yadav sending back Ollie Pope and England finished 100/2 at Lunch on Day 1 of the fifth Test against India in Dharamsala. England were lucky to have not lost a wicket in the first hour of the day India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah milking everything that the pitch and conditions had to offer. However, India finally got a reward for their efforts with Kuldeep getting the wicket of Ben Duckett thanks in part to a brilliant catch by Shubman Gill. Crawley carried on and scored yet another half-century. He was batting on 61 off 71 balls when Pope fell and the umpires called for Lunch.

The visitors had won the toss and chosen to bat. Devdutt Padikkal is making his Test debut in place of Rajat Patidar, who captain Rohit Sharma said picked up an injury. Ravichandran Ashwin, who himself is set to play his 100th Test, handed Padikkal his debut cap. Ashwin was later handed his 100th Test cap in a special ceremony by head coach Rahul Dravid.

When was the last time a Test series saw such a long gap between two games? Can’t recall? Well, neither can we. It’s almost as if the thoughts of a fifth and final Test between India and England had almost vanished. Since India’s five-wicket win in Ranchi, so much has happened. Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan’s central contracts were terminated by the BCCI, Shardul Thakur scored his 2nd First-Class century to help Mumbai reach a record 48th Ranji Trophy final, Neil Wagner played his farewell Test for New Zealand and the Women’s Premier League got done with its Bengaluru leg.

After a 10-day gap, the two teams are back to play the final Test of this exciting five-match series in one of the coldest parts of the country – the HPCA Stadium on Dharamsala, where the conditions won’t be easy by any stretch of the imagination. Intense cold has gripped Dharamsala, so much so that even beanies, hoodies and pullovers may not be enough for the players to grapple the chill. The minimum temperature is around 1 degree and the max won’t go beyond 7 or 8 across the next 5 days.

Back to cricket. The Test holds significance for two players in particular. India’s Ravichandran Ashwin and England’s Jonny Bairstow, both of whom are set to play their 100th Test for the country. In a pretty coincidental trivia, both Ashwin and Bairstow had made their debuts against West Indies. India may not want to rest easy despite the series being won as a 4-1 finish can do their chances in the World Test Championships points table a world of good. India, currently leading the WTC table can solidify their position even further at the top.

England have made one change to their Playing XI, replacing Ollie Robinson with Mark Wood, with the two spinners Shoaib Bashir and Tom Hartley retaining their places. India have maintained the mystery surrounding their Playing XI as always. Will they play three seamers, or two? Will Rajat Patidar be persisted with, or will Devdutt Padikkal become the fifth India to make a debut this series?

The Dharamsala pitch looks to be a belter of a wicket as per Stokes but when it’s nippy, and the bowling attack is a fearsome as these two teams, no amount of flat decks can make batting look easy. However, India would be smacking their lips at the idea of batting first, purely because their batters have had a ball, with young Yashasvi Jaiswal leading the way. In fact, with 655 runs, Jaiswal is just one run away from matching Virat Kohli’s record for the most runs in a bilateral series comprising three Tests or more. And of course, Kohli’s 692 runs are in danger as well, just like Sunil Gavaskar’s 774.

Unfortunately enough, KL Rahul has been ruled out, which is a mystery again in itself given he was 90 percent fit ahead of the start of the third Test. He flew to London for a medial consultation and has returned to the NCA to get fit in time for the IPL, which starts in a little over two weeks. Having said that, do India really need him given how their youngsters have stepped up? Dhruv Jurel, Sarfaraz Khan, Akash Deep have been phenomenal which makes this series a lot like the BGT 2020/21.

As for the bowling, look no further than the return of Jasprit Bumrah. The India pacer, given a break for the Ranchi Test is back, and with overcast conditions awaiting, would be eager to send those crackers in to the England batters early. Partnering him could be Mohammed Siraj, or Akash if the management feels three pacers is the way to go about it. Ideally in Dharamsala, that should be the case, but as the surface spins and deteriorates, the idea of three spinners isn’t that bad either, especially if England bat last. Well, irrespective of that, milestone man Ashwin remains a threat. What an achievement it has been. Even though it hasn’t come sooner like it should have, the entire nation will feel a sense of pride when he walks out for the national anthem. Go well Ash, India is proud of you.

Here are some highlights around IND vs ENG 5th Test, Day 1:

– Ravichandran Ashwin was handed his 100th Test cap by Rahul Dravid in a special ceremony before the start of play

– England have won the toss and chosen to bat first

– India have an unassailable 3-1 lead in the series

– India have not lost two matches in a Test series at home since 2012/13

– Ashwin is the 14th Indian to play 100 Test matches

– Bairstow is set to become the 17th England player to earn 100 Test caps

Dinesh Karthik to Quit IPL before Announcing International Retirement: Reports

IPL 2024, which is set to begin on March 22 with the defending champions Chennai Super Kings taking on RCB in Chennai, is likely to be Dinesh Karthik’s last.

Veteran India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik is set to end his IPL career after playing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore this season, reported news agency PTI. The 17th season of IPL, which is set to begin on March 22 with the defending champions Chennai Super Kings taking on RCB in Chennai, is likely to be Karthik’s last. The 38-year-old is also likely to announce his retirement from international cricket soon.

“This 2024 edition will be his (Dinesh Karthik’s) last IPL. He will decide his international retirement after the IPL,” a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Karthik last represented India in the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022 but he has been an integral part of the RCB set-up for the last two seasons after being bought for 5.5 crore at the auctions that year.

Karthik, who represented six franchises – Daredevils (2008-14), Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings – 2011), Mumbai Indians (2012-13), Gujarat Lions (2016-17), Knight Riders (2018-21) and Royal Challengers (2015, 2022-present) – is one of the most capped players of IPL. With 242 appearances, he stands at No.3 in the list behind MS Dhoni (250) and Rohit Sharma (243). He has missed just two IPL games in his entire career which his franchise has been a part of.

Dinesh Karthik’s IPL journey

Karthik is also among only seven cricketers to have featured in every single edition of IPL since its inception in 2008. The others are Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Wriddhiman Saha and Manish Pandey.

Karthik has had quite a journey in the IPL. He started off with Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) in 2008 before moving to Kings XI Punjab in 2011. He spent the following two seasons with Mumbai Indians before going back to Delhi in 2014 for a price tag of a whopping ₹12.5 crore.

Royal Challengers signed him in 2015 for ₹10.5 crore and he then played for Gujarat Lions in 2016 and 2017 before spending four seasons with the Kolkata Knight Riders.

He has led the Kolkata side to IPL playoffs in 2018 and they finished fifth in the points table in 2019.

Ahead of the IPL 2022, Karthik was released by KKR and was bought by RCB for the second time for ₹5.5 crore. He had a stellar 2022 for RCB while mainly playing the role of a finisher.

Karthik made 330 runs in 16 matches at an average of 55 and an explosive strike-rate of 183.33 that year, a guiding force in RCB’s march to the play-offs.

That run earned Karthik a berth in the India squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 held in Australia but he could not shine as expected as Virat Kohli’s side bowed out of semifinals after a defeat against eventual champions England.
