Hardik Pandya returns: How new Mumbai Indians captain performed days before start of 2024 IPL season!

Hardik Pandya returned to competitive cricket in a tournament at the DY Patil Stadium for the first time in nearly four months

Hardik Pandya returned to competitive cricket for the first time in nearly four months, playing a match in the DY Patil Cup in Navi Mumbai. Pandya has been working his way back to full fitness after he suffered an ankle injury during India’s match against Bangladesh at the 2023 World Cup in October last year.

The injury ruled him out for the rest of the tournament and he then had to sit out the subsequent series against Australia at home, South Africa away from home and then Afghanistan in India. It meant that, if he doesn’t get injured, Pandya would have to play the T20 World Cup later this year without having played T20Is for India since the 2023 World Cup. He is, however, expected to play the Indian Premier League (IPL) as five-time champions Mumbai Indians’ newly appointed captain.

How Pandya fared on return

Pandya on Monday played for Reliance 1 in the DY Patil T20 Cup in Navi Mumbai. He opened the bowling and picked up 2 for 22 from his three overs. He then batted at No. 10 and saw off a tense chase along with Piyush Chawla. Pandya was unbeaten on 3 off four balls as Reliance 1 beat Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited by two wickets. Among his wickets was India T20 international Rahul Tripathi.

For the past month, Pandya has been training in Baroda while following a return-to-fitness roadmap drawn up for him by the National Cricket Academy (NCA). The all-rounder also featured in practice matches at NCA along with Rishabh Pant, who is also returning to fitness after suffering serious injuries in a car accident in December, 2022.

Pandya’s return to competitive cricket has been much awaited as had led India’s T20 side for most of last year and would have been a contender to captain in the upcoming World Cup but for injury. BCCI secretary Jay Shah has announced Rohit Sharma as skipper and Pandya as his deputy for the marquee event.

Lionel Messi scores equalizer to help Inter Miami get draw against LA Galaxy

Lionel Messi emerged as the saviour for Inter Miami as the Argentine turned back the clock to grab a last-gasp equalizer for his side to secure a draw against LA Galaxy on February 25.

Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi proved to be the saviour of Inter Miami as he scored a stoppage-time equalizer to help them get a 1-1 draw against LA Galaxy.

What happened when Inter Miami took on LA Galaxy?

The match’s opening goal came in the 75th minute, courtesy of LA Galaxy’s Dejan Joveljic. The play unfolded rapidly, with Riqui Puig launching a powerful shot from just outside the penalty area. Although Miami’s goalkeeper, Drake Callender, managed to block the initial attempt, the ball fortuitously landed at Mark Delgado’s feet. With precision, Delgado set up Joveljic for an easy tap-in, marking the first goal of the evening and putting Galaxy ahead.

However, the Galaxy’s lead was precarious, especially after Delgado received his second yellow card, reducing the home team to ten men. This pivotal moment added tension to the match, as LA Galaxy braced to defend their slender lead against a determined Inter Miami.

As the clock ticked down, Messi emerged as the hero in the dying moments of the game. In the second minute of stoppage time, following a series of quick exchanges with Jordi Alba, Messi found the back of the net with a precise left-footed strike, securing a vital point for Inter Miami and maintaining their unbeaten start to the season.

Inter Miami have 4 points at the moment and maintained their unbeaten start to the season.

The match was not short of action from the beginning, with LA Galaxy dominating possession and creating numerous scoring opportunities. Despite this, the score remained deadlocked at halftime, thanks in part to Callender’s heroics between the posts for Miami, including a crucial penalty save from Puig in the 13th minute.

Puig have another big chance to open the scoring in the 29th minute, only for Callender to make another fine stop to keep the scores level.

For Inter Miami, the draw was a hard-fought point on the road, while LA Galaxy was left to rue missed chances but showed they could compete with the best in the league.

IPL 2024 Schedule Announcement Live Updates: Blockbuster fixtures of all 10 teams to be unveiled today!

IPL 2024

IPL 2024 Schedule Announcement Live Updates: In just a little while, the BCCI is set to unveil the much-awaited schedule of the IPL 2024. Set for its 16th season, the Indian Premier League promises to be bigger and better than ever. And although there is a possibility that not all fixtures might be revealed today, realisation strikes that we may be just a month away from Indian cricket’s biggest T20 carnival. After all, it feels just last month that Ravindra Jadeja struck a boundary off the last ball to take Chennai Super Kings to their fifth IPL title, but the fact remains that it’s been 8 long months to that epic night in Ahmedabad. Guess that’s what the IPL does – leave an ever-lasting impact.

The IPL 2024’s biggest roadblock was the fact that it is expected to clash with the general elections. Twice has it happened previously, and it led to scattered decisions. The 2009 edition was moved entirely to South Africa, whereas in 2014, the IPL was played in two halves – the first in the UAE and the other back in India. In 2019 though, the two events did not collide, and hence the IPL, starting March 23, was played entirely in India. This year too, while there were speculations, BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal clarified once and for all that the IPL will not be moved abroad, but the full picture will only be painted once there is more clarity.

Back to the cricket. This year’s IPL has so much to look forward to. Mumbai Indians have a new captain in Hardik Pandya and Gujarat Titans has Shubman Gill. And of course, the big swansong of MS Dhoni. The Chennai Super Kings captain said last year that winning the IPL in 2023 would have been the perfect time for him to retire but he plans on coming back for one last run ‘next year’. Cut to 2024, here we are. In what is Dhoni’s final season in all probability, MSD is rocking shades of when he burst on to the scene. He has grown his hair like it was in the mid-2000s is likely to play with BAS as his bat sticker. Only Dhoni is capable of such meaningful and priceless gestures.

Moving on to CSK’s biggest rivals, the Mumbai Indians have already created headlines even before the start of the tournament. In fact, they created ripples on December 15, 2023 itself when they announced Hardik the new captain of the franchise, replacing Rohit Sharma. The decision created a social media storm with truckloads of MI and other fans spamming their franchise’s timelines and being vocal with their displeasure. But it is what it is. The team felt that now is the right time for MI, who have gone without a title for three seasons, to make the transition, and once Hardik came on board, they just knew who it was going to be. In fact, according to reports, Hardik’s stipulation for his return to MI was allegedly a guarantee of captaincy.

Outside of MI and CSK, the biggest factor heading into the IPL 2024 are the auction, that took place on December 19, where Pat Cummins and Mitchell Marsh struck gold. The Australian pace-bowling duo smashed records, with Cummins becoming the first player to surpass the 20-crore margin, eventually heading to Sunrisers Hyderabad. However, even before the news if Cummins’ record-breaking deal could reach to all parts of the world, it was bettered by Starc, who became the costliest player of all time, with KKR splurging a gobsmacking ₹24.75 crore on him. Meanwhile, Harshal Patel emerged as the most expensive India, with Punjab Kings shelling out ₹11.75 crore.

So yeah, the stage is set. Will Cummins, Starc be able to live up to the expectations? Who will be this year’s breakout star? Which two teams will play the IPL 2024 opener. The first step towards answering all these questions will be taken today at 5PM.

Below are a few important pointers related to the IPL 2024 Schedule Announcement:

– The schedule will be announced today at 5PM.

– The entire schedule is not likely to be unveiled.

– The IPL 2024 is expected to begin on March 22.

– The opening fixture could be between Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans.

– The entire IPL 2024 will take place in India.

2 for 82: IPL’s most expensive duo Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins fail to keep NZ in check at Wellington

New Zealand vs Australia: Indian Premier League’s most expensive duo Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins played their first T20I match together for the first time since the mini-auction. The duo conceded 82 runs between them in 8 overs.

In Short

  • Australia conceded 215 runs against New Zealand in 1st T20I
  • Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins were expensive in their spells
  • Starc and Cummins are set to play for KKR and SRH respectively

Indian Premier League’s most expensive duo – Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins – played a T20I match together for the first time since the auction in December. The Australian pace bowling duo were up against Mitchell Santner’s New Zealand in the first T20I of the 3-match series, on Wednesday, 21 February.

Back from a short rest after two Test series against Pakistan and West Indies, the duo went up against a strong New Zealand batting line-up in Wellington that included the likes of Finn Allen, Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway and Glenn Phillips.

Both Starc and Cummins picked up one wicket each and gave away 82 runs between themselves. While Starc had an economy of 9.75, Cummins registered his at 10.75. Starc picked the wicket of aggressive Finn Allen (32) in the 6th over of the match and registered figures of 4-0-39-1. On the other hand, Pat Cummins dismissed Rachin Ravindra (68) in the 16th over at a time when the left-hander was going hammer and tongs against Australia. Cummins registered figures of 4-0-43-1.

The entire IPL 2024 tournament will be held in India.

IPL 2024

IPL 2024: The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to begin on March 22, league chairman Arun Dhumal told PTI on Tuesday. He added that the cash-rich league will be held entirely in the country despite the coinciding general elections. The dates of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 are expected to be announced early next month.

Only the schedule of the first 15 days will be announced and the roster for the remaining games will be decided after the announcement of the general election dates, he said. “We are looking at a March 22 start for the tournament. We are working closely with the government agencies and we will first release the initial schedule. The entire tournament will be held in India,” said Dhumal.

Considering the T20 World Cup begins within days of the cash-rich league’s conclusion, the final is likely to be held on May 26. The elections are expected to be held in April and May. This is the main reason why the schedule for the IPL’s 17th edition has not been unveiled yet.

The players’ auction for the 2024 season was held in December 2023. Australian pacer Mitchell Starc became the most expensive player in the history of IPL. He was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for Rs 24.75 crore.

Wanindu Hasaranga breaks Malinga’s record to establish a new Sri Lankan record as Sri Lanka wins the series against Afghanistan!

In recognition of his overall performance, Angelo Mathews was named Player of the Match (POTM). His rapid-fire innings of 42 from 22 balls and his 2/9 stats claimed were crucial to Sri Lanka victory.

Sri Lanka

Skipper Wanindu Hasaranga claimed his first-ever T20I series win since being appointed full-time captain as Sri Lanka made mincemeat of Afghanistan in the second game of the three-match series by 87 runs on Monday (February 19).

Sri Lankan batters used the batting-friendly strip at the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium after the Afghan skipper Ibrahim Zadran won the toss and sent them in.

Openers Pathum Nissanka (25 runs off 11 deliveries) and Kusal Mendis (23 off 14 balls) got the hosts off to a blistering start, putting the pressure right back on the tourists up front.

The Sri Lankan pair added 45 runs inside four overs before Nissanka was trapped in front of his stumps by Azmatullah Omarzai. Mendis was quick to follow his partner to the dugout as he fell prey to Fazalhaq Farooqi two deliveries later.

The home side lost three more wickets without adding much to the scoreboard and was reduced to 121/5 in 14.2 overs. However, things took an amazing turn for the Wanindu Hasaranga-led side as Sadeera Samarawickrama (51 off 42 balls) and Angelo Mathews came together in the middle.

The duo added 66 off just 34 balls to propel the Lankan Lions to 187/6 in 20 overs. Mathews was the star of the show as he smashed four sixes and two fours and batted at a jaw-dropping strike rate of 190.90.

Afghanistan’s chase wobbled early and they were struggling to keep up with the asking rate, having lost half their side inside five overs.

The Sri Lankan bowlers were disciplined in their approach and didn’t offer any freebies for the tourists to cash in. A 39-run stand between Nabi and Karim Jant helped the visitors salvage their pride to some extent before the Lankan bowling attack came roaring back to restrict them to 115 in 17 overs.

Wanindu Hasaranga moves past Lankan legend Lasith Malinga

Skipper Hasaranga became the fastest Sri Lankan to 100 T20I wickets as he shattered Lasith Malinga’s record. Hasaranga achieved the feat in his 63rd T20I outing whereas it took Malinga 76 T20Is snare 100 scalps in the format.

Hasaranga is the second-fastest to scale the milestone and is behind Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan who bagged 100 T20I poles in just 53 games.

“They can take the next available flight back home,” the former player says, dismissing England’s prospects of retaliating with a Bazball strategy!

Former India opener Kris Srikkanth has criticized England’s Bazball approach, saying that it won’t work if they fail to adapt to the conditions in India. Srikkanth, known for his fearless approach to batting, ruled out any chances of England fighting back in the series even as the touring side remained defiant after the humbling loss in the 3rd Test in Rajkot. The Bazball era dealt England their most crushing blow as they suffered a 434-run defeat in the 3rd Test.

Srikkanth said England lack the talent to challenge India in Indian conditions, pointing fingers at the inexperienced spin-bowling attack.

“I doubt the practical success of promoting Bazball and similar theories. Have these strategies proven effective, especially in the Ashes? To be honest, no tactic can succeed if the team continues to perform poorly. The hype surrounding the Bazball theory seems unwarranted, as it requires the skill to bat effectively in specific conditions. Additionally, successful bowling demands genuine talent,” he said on his YouTube show ‘Cheeky Cheeka’.

England stunned India in the first Test of the ongoing 5-match series in Hyderabad, but the tourists have lost steam, losing the second and third Tests by huge margins. The Rajkot Test defeat, by a record margin of 434 runs, doused the hype around Bazball with even former England cricketers taking a swipe at the popular approach that brought England plenty of success before they arrived in India.

“If feasible, they could take the next available flight back home. However, they are obligated to participate in the remaining two Tests,” he jokingly said when asked about England’s chances of fighting back in the series.

Kris Srikkanth added that England need to look at adapting to situations and not remain bullish about their style of play if they are to recover from the Rajkot Test hammering.

“Yes, their batting performance in the first innings was commendable. Ollie Pope delivered an exceptional innings, and I acknowledge England’s credit for that. However, I doubt the sustainability of the Bazball approach in the long term. Simply going out and attempting to hit every ball may work for players like Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes, but not everyone can execute that style successfully,” he added.

With Ben Stokes remaining defiant about their chances to win the series, the two teams will meet in the 4th Test in Ranchi from Friday.

AUS vs NZ: Spencer Johnson added to Australia’s squad for T20I series against New Zealand

Spencer Johnson has been added to Australia’s squad for their upcoming three-match T20I series against New Zealand.

Spencer Johnson

In Short

  • Spencer Johnson named in Australia’s squad for New Zealand series
  • Spencer Johnson has played 4 T20Is and 1 ODI for Australia
  • Australia will face New Zealand in 3-match T20I series

Spencer Johnson has been added to Australia’s squad for their upcoming three-match T20I series against New Zealand, presenting the all-rounder with a golden chance to secure his spot in the T20 World Cup selection.

Cricket Australia announced on Sunday afternoon that the 28-year-old will be replacing all-rounder Marcus Stoinis in the 15-player touring group for the three-match series in New Zealand. The decision was taken after Stoinis was ruled out due to back soreness, which he developed in last week’s second T20 match against West Indies in Perth.

Stoinis was supposed to be replaced by Aaron Hardie in the team. However, the all-rounder suffered calf tightness while bowling against Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield.

Also read: Amid the housing crisis, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pauses the immigration effort!

“He (Hardie) has got a tight calf. It’s more precautionary. He’ll bat if required tomorrow. Hopefully, it’s nothing too significant,” said West Australian coach Adam Voges.

Johnson has already represented Australia in four T20s after his international debut last year, and boasts a remarkable record of 19 wickets at 14.47 achieved in this season’s Big Bash League with the Brisbane Heat. His performances also earned him the title of the ‘Player of the BBL final’, after picking four wickets while giving away 26 runs during Brisbane Heat’s 54-run victory over the Sydney Sixers.

Having turned heads in The Hundred last year, Johnson was roped in by Gujarat Titans for Rs 10 crore in the IPL 2024 mini-auction in Dubai last year.

Heading to New Zealand alongside Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, and Nathan Ellis, Johnson is gearing up to compete for a spot in Australia’s T20 World Cup squad. With Starc, Hazlewood and Cummins already confirmed for the tournament, the selection might only have space for one additional fast bowler.

Johnson, being a left-arm fast bowler, could be viewed as a similar substitute for Starc, who last played a T20I for Australia in November 2022.

Australia will take on New Zealand in the first T20I of their three-match series at the Wellington Regional Stadium on Wednesday, February 21, before locking horns at Eden Park in Auckland for the final two matches of the series on February 23 and 25.
