The Google Pixel 8 series was crowned as the best smartphone of 2023 at MWC. This flagship series earned the award for its exceptional performance, innovation, and leadership. Pixel 8 surpassed other nominees, including the iPhone 15 Pro series and Samsung Galaxy S23 series, to claim the top spot.
The award was presented during the Global Mobile Awards event at the Mobile World Congress (MWC), hosted by GSMA. This is an annual event which recognizes achievements of tech in various categories such as “Best Mobile Technology Breakthrough” and “Best Mobile Network Infrastructure.” In the “Device” category, Google secured the biggest “Best Smartphone” award.
The GSMA explains the criteria for the award: “The Best Smartphone award acknowledges outstanding performance, innovation, and leadership, as assessed by leading independent analysts, journalists, and influencers, based on smartphones available in the market from January 2023 to December 2023.”
The Pixel 8 series was given the top spot amongst other strong competitors and in fact the best smartphone lineup of 2023 which includes the iPhone 15 Pro series, OnePlus Open, Samsung Galaxy S23 series, and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5.
Sharing the big win, Rick Osterloh who is Senior Vice President overseeing Google’s Devices & Services efforts posted on Twitters/ now X and wrote “Thrilled about Pixel 8 winning another important Phone of the Year award at MWC! @madebygoogle thank you to the entire Pixel user community for helping us get there, and congratulations to our team for great progress.”
Interestingly, the Google Pixel 8 series captured attention last year with its new upgrades and AI innovation. The series is driven by Google’s latest Tensor G3 chip and provides the stock Android experience along with a powerful camera for stunning photo and video quality, plus game-changing editing tools.The phone has been acclaimed as one of the best performers for everyday tasks and brief gaming sessions.
Additionally, Google is reportedly poised to achieve a significant milestone this year with the Pixel 8, as it is projected to ship a total of 10 million devices in 2023. However, this year marks the first time that Google Pixel has managed to claim the title of best smartphone. Last year, Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro was hailed as the best, with the iPhone 13 Pro Max winning the year prior. In 2021, the Galaxy S21 Ultra was crowned the best phone. Even the Pixel 6 Pro made it to the shortlist in 2021, and the Pixel 3’s Night Sight feature won a GSMA award for “Disruptive Device Innovation” in 2019.
