The US, UK, and French pricing rises went more smoothly than the corporation had anticipated, according to its quarterly earnings report.

Mukesh Ambani's JioCinema rival gets record 131000000

Netflix’s crackdown on password sharing has helped it gain more paid users as the streaming giant added more than 13.1 million subscriptions in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2023 that ended on December 31. Netflix is a key rival of Mukesh Ambani’s JioCinema in India.

The company said in its quarterly earnings that price increases in the US, UK and France went better than it had anticipated.

“We largely put price increases on hold as we rolled out paid sharing. Now that we’re through that, we’re able to resume our standard approach,” Netflix co-chief executive Greg Peters said during a call with analysts.

Peters said the company will continue to monitor other countries and try and assess “when we’ve delivered enough additional entertainment value”.

“We look at engagement, retention, acquisition as the signals there so that we can go back to members and ask them to pay a bit more to keep that positive flywheel going and we can invest in more great films, series, and games for those members,” he said.

“The summary statement might be back to business as usual”.

The company exited 2023 with 12 per cent revenue growth, up from 6 per cent in 2022, and increased free cash flow to $6.9 billion.

Paid net additions reached 13.1 million in Q4 2023 as compared to 7.7 million in Q4 2022 — the company’s largest Q4 ever. In Q4 2023, operating income amounted to $1.5 billion, up from $0.5 billion in the year ago period.

“For 2023, we generated $7 billion of operating income, up 23 per cent year over year,” said Netflix.

Chandigarh AQI ‘very poor’, Administration blames burning of waste on periphery

With prevailing weather conditions, Chandigarh AQI continued to remain in the “very poor” category for the past many days.

Chandigarh AQI

The average Chandigarh AQI (air quality index) on Tuesday stood at 344 around 8.05 pm, while it was 343 on Monday. The AQI reading at the continuous ambient air quality monitoring station in Sector 22 was 362. The station in Sector 53, bordering Mohali, recorded the highest AQI level of 376 and the one in Sector 25 logged 295.

TC Nautiyal, Director, Environment, UT, said the drop in the air quality might be due to the prevailing weather conditions and also, there were reports of garbage burning mostly by junk dealers in the adjoining areas of the city.

With no rain expected any time soon, the AQI is likely to remain high in the coming days as well, according to the Meteorological Department.

The AQI between 301 and 400 is considered “very poor” and can cause respiratory illness on prolonged exposure. The AQI between 401 and 500 is considered “severe” and can affect healthy people and seriously impacts those with existing diseases.

India now has the fourth-largest stock market in the world, overtaking Hong Kong!

Sensex results on the facade of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) building in Mumbai, India.

Indian exchanges value reach $4.33 trillion, exceeding Hong Kong’s $4.29 trillion: Bloomberg data.

India’s stock market has surpassed Hong Kong’s for the first time with the total value of shares listed on Indian exchanges reaching $4.33 trillion as of Monday’s close, exceeding Hong Kong’s $4.29 trillion, according to Bloomberg data. This makes India the world’s fourth-largest equity market.

The stock market capitalisation surpassed $4 trillion on December 5, with about half of that coming in the past four years, the report added.

Indian equities are surging, fuelled by a growing base of retail investors and robust corporate earnings. India presents itself as a viable alternative to China, attracting global capital and companies due to its stable political environment and a consumption-driven economy among the fastest-growing globally, according to the report.

Ashish Gupta, CIO at Axis Mutual Fund in Mumbai, expressed optimism, saying, “India has all the right ingredients in place to set the growth momentum further.”

China’s appeal as a global growth engine has diminished’

This upward trajectory in Indian stocks contrasts sharply with Hong Kong, which has experienced a historic downturn. Factors contributing to Hong Kong’s decline include stringent anti-Covid-19 measures in Beijing, regulatory crackdowns, a property-sector crisis, and geopolitical tensions with the West, the report said.

This has diminished China’s appeal as a global growth engine, resulting in a significant equities downturn, with Chinese and Hong Kong stocks losing over $6 trillion in total market value since their 2021 peaks, according to the report. Hong Kong’s role as a prominent hub for initial public offerings has waned amid the turmoil, it added.

Foods that are just as harmful to the liver as alcohol!

1. The liver detoxifies the body and metabolizes the nutrients

Maintaining a healthy liver is crucial for overall well-being, as the liver plays a vital role in detoxification, metabolism, and nutrient storage. While alcohol is widely recognized as a liver-damaging substance, several everyday foods can also contribute to liver damage when consumed in excess. Here are a few foods that, when not consumed mindfully, can silently sabotage your liver health.

2. Beverages that are loaded with sugar

junk food

Highly sweetened beverages, such as sodas and energy drinks, are loaded with fructose, a type of sugar that, when consumed excessively, can lead to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Excess fructose is converted into fat, which accumulates in the liver, potentially causing inflammation and liver damage.

3. Processed and packaged foods

packed food

Many processed foods, including snacks, chips, and fast food items, are high in trans fats, refined sugars, and excessive salt. These ingredients contribute to weight gain and can lead to insulin resistance, fostering the development of NAFLD and other liver-related issues.

4. Red meat and processed meats

Red Meat

Diets high in red and processed meats have been associated with an increased risk of liver diseases. Processed meats often contain additives and preservatives that can be harmful, while the high levels of saturated fats in red meat can contribute to liver inflammation and damage.

5. Foods loaded with hidden salt

loaded food

A diet high in sodium can lead to fluid retention and increased blood pressure, both of which are detrimental to liver health. Chronic liver diseases, such as cirrhosis, can be exacerbated by excessive salt intake.

6. White bread, pasta, and rice

pasta

Refined carbohydrates, such as those found in white bread, pasta, and rice, have a high glycemic index and can cause rapid spikes in blood sugar levels. This can contribute to insulin resistance and the development of fatty liver disease over time.

7. Artificial sweeteners

Artificial sweeteners

While marketed as a healthier alternative to sugar, artificial sweeteners may have negative effects on the liver. Some studies suggest that artificial sweeteners can alter gut bacteria, leading to metabolic disturbances that may impact liver function.

8. Milk products rich in fat

Milk products

Certain high-fat dairy products, especially those containing saturated fats, can contribute to liver inflammation and damage. Moderation is key, as excessive consumption of these products may increase the risk of liver-related complications.

9. Canned foods

canned food

Canned foods often contain high levels of added preservatives and chemicals. The lining of many cans also contains bisphenol A (BPA), a compound that may contribute to liver problems when consumed in excess.

10. Low-quality cooking oils

cooking oil

Certain cooking oils, such as those high in omega-6 fatty acids, may contribute to inflammation when used in excess. Opting for healthier cooking oils, like olive oil, can be a better choice for liver health.

Under-19 World Cup: The hunt begins for India’s next Virat Kohli!

Can the India Under-19 batch of 2024 join the prestigious class of 2000, 2008, 2012, 2018 and 2022?

Earlier this week, a young man from Karnataka grabbed the consciousness of the average Indian cricket fan, upstaging even Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Not yet 19, Prakhar Chaturvedi ripped the record books to shreds, scoring a monumental unbeaten 404 in the final of the all-India Under-19 tournament for the Cooch Behar Trophy. That his exploits came in the title clash, and against Mumbai who received a dose of their own medicine, brought it into starker focus.

Chaturvedi might be the current Under-19 flavour, but don’t be surprised if more names grab the limelight in the next three weeks. Names like Uday Saharan. Arshin Kulkarni. Aravelly Avinash. Musheer Khan. Raj Limbani. Saumy Pandey.

These are among the young men tasked with leading India’s charge at the Under-19 World Cup, starting in South Africa today (January 19). Saharan is the skipper, Kulkarni and Avinash have already bagged IPL contracts, the others have gradually made their presence felt over the last few months, ready to take on the world even as Chaturvedi, who missed out on World Cup selection, eyes a graduation to a more senior level in domestic cricket – he has already been picked in the Under-23 side and could make his Ranji Trophy debut in the next few weeks.

The World Cup is the showpiece event at the Under-19 level, but as Rahul Dravid took great pains to point out during his four-year stint as the India Under-19 and ‘A’ coach between 2015 and 2019, it is no more than a means to an end. “I am not a big fan of judging these boys on the basis of results alone,” he told this writer not long into his tenure. “A few years down the road, few will remember whether someone was a part of the Under-19 World Cup-winning squad. They will only truly be recognised when they make the senior side and perform; that must be the ultimate goal, not just winning the Under-19 World Cup.”

It’s hard to fault Dravid’s philosophy but try telling an Under-19 kid approaching the biggest tournament of his life that it doesn’t really matter if he comes home victorious or not.

Like they have for the last several editions, India will approach this latest World Cup as among the strong favourites to go all the way. Perhaps not as strong as in the past, primarily because the pandemic scuttled domestic age-group cricket for two full seasons and therefore prevented the natural progression of the Under-16 cricketers who would have organically advanced to the Under-19 team, but still strong enough that other teams will cast a wary eye on them. India have made the finals in each of the last four editions, winning in 2018 and 2022, and while the pressure of history might weigh on Saharan and his boys, it shouldn’t really impact their performances when they get out on the park.

One of the reasons why India remain a dominant force at the junior level too is the quantum, and quality, of cricket they are exposed to from Under-16s upwards. There is so much organised cricket, much of it by the BCCI itself, that one would have to be extraordinarily unlucky to not get enough opportunities or to slip through the cracks. Greg Chappell, the Australian legend, once told me that India’s Under-19 lads are ‘almost finished products’ by the time they play for the country at that level because they have played so much so regularly compared to players in other countries, not least his own. It speaks to the robustness and vibrancy of the system which, contrary to popular public opinion, doesn’t merely pander to the high and the mighty.

This season alone, in the lead-up to the Under-19 World Cup, the inter-state one-day Vinoo Mankad Trophy was followed by a Challenger Series, then a quadrangular tournament featuring two Indian teams alongside Bangladesh and England. The boys then travelled to the UAE for the Asia Cup, where they lost in the semifinals to Bangladesh, and arrived in South Africa more than three weeks before their first World Cup encounter, playing the hosts and Afghanistan in a tri-series in which they remained unbeaten.

The quality of opportunities, therefore, better prepares them to tackle the challenges a tournament like the World Cup will throw up. None of these is a guarantee for success, needless to say – one need not look beyond the senior team for validation of that assertion – but if Saharan’s boys emulate Yash Dhull’s Class of ’22 and hold the trophy aloft on February 11 in Benoni, it won’t be by accident, you know.
