Sanju Samson pays the price for a heated argument with on-field umpires as BCCI slaps heavy penalty on RR captain

Sanju Samson was at the receiving end of a controversial dismissal during the match against Delhi Capitals.

Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson was fined 30 per cent of his match fees for his quarrel with the umpires over his debatable dismissal against the hosts Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday. Samson was anchoring the Royals to a comprehensive win at 86 runs while chasing a 222-run target. However, his innings were cut short by DC bowler Mukesh Kumar after he tried to hit him over long-on but was caught by Shai Hope, who managed to stay inside the boundary. As the catch was looked at very closely, the umpires extensively checked it before the RR skipper was finally given out.

However, Samson did not look pleased with the decision as he felt that Shai Hope had touched the boundary and was involved in a heated argument with the umpires. While RR failed to win the match, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) imposed a heavy penalty on the Royals’ wicket-keeper for breaching the BCCI code of conduct.

“Mr Sanju Samson has been fined 30 per cent of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during Match 56 of the Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Delhi Capitals at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on May 07, 2024,” the official statement read.

“Samson committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. He admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” it further stated

RR’s team director, Kumar Sangakkara, also stated the difficulties faced by the umpires in announcing the verdict at crucial junctures of the game.

“It depends on replays and angles, and sometimes you think the foot’s touched. But it is a difficult one for the third umpire to judge. The game was at a crucial stage, so that happens in cricket. We have different perspectives on it. At the end of the day, you have to stand by that decision in terms of what the umpires did. If we have any other kind of opinion on it, we will share it with the umpire and sort it out. But irrespective of that dismissal, we still should have probably seen that game home,” Sangakkara said.

The second penalty on Samson this year

This is not the first time when the RR captain was punished this year; earlier, during the match against Gujarat Titans, Samson faced an INR 12 lakh penalty for a slow over-rate.

Rajasthan Royals, despite the loss against DC, are comfortably placed at the second spot in the points table and have a four-point lead over the third-placed Chennai Super Kings.

Samson believed that the match could’ve turned in RR’s favour as he lauded his players for their performances.

“I think we had it in our hands, it was like 11-12 runs per over, it was achievable, but these things happen in IPL. We are doing both the things fine, we would like to stick to what the conditions demand, 220 was 10 runs extra to chase, if we had conceded a couple of fewer boundaries, we would have made it through,” Samson had said in the post-match presentation.

Borussia Dortmund reached their third Champions League final after Mats Hummels’ second-half goal earned a 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain.

Leading 1-0 from the first leg, BVB came up with the goods at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday to seal a 2-0 aggregate victory.

Hummels headed home from a corner five minutes into the second half to send the German team, who won the title in 1997, into their first final in Europe’s top club competition since 2013.

PSG hit the woodwork four times but failed to find the net as Kylian Mbappe, who is widely expected to leave the club at the end of the season, was a shadow of his usual brilliant self.

Dortmund will meet either 14-time champions Real Madrid or their Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich, who clash at the Bernabeu on Wednesday after a 2-2 draw in the first leg, in the final.

That showpiece match will take place at Wembley on June 1. The last time the final was played in London was back in 2013, when BVB, coached by Jurgen Klopp, lost to Bayern.

In a series of posts on X, Mayawati said, “It is known that BSP, besides being a party, is also a movement for self-respect and self-esteem of Baba Saheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar and social change for which Shri Kanshi Ram ji and I have dedicated our entire lives and a new generation is also being prepared to give it momentum.”

“In the same sequence, along with promoting other people in the party, I declared Shri Akash Anand as the National Coordinator and his successor, but in the larger interest of the party and the movement, he is being separated from both these important responsibilities until he attains full maturity,” she added.

Mayawati further informed that Anand Kumar, Akash’s father, will continue in his role with the party.

On December 10 last year, Mayawati declared Akash Anand, 28, as her successor. Anand, who has done his MBA in London, was given charge of the party’s National Coordinator.

Akash Anand was recently in the news after a case of Model Code of Conduct violation was registered against him in Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur. The action came after the district administration took cognizance of Anand’s speech at an election rally, where he compared the BJP government in the state with the Taliban.

Kim Kardashian 2024 Met Gala Dress Was Designed to Create Drama, But It’s Getting Old.

Kim Kardashian’s 2024 Met Gala ensemble featured a sheer, silver dress with sparkling drapes and an asymmetrical gray knit shawl. The goal was to elongate her waist to resemble a pencil. Is that what’s upsetting you? That was most likely the intention.

That appears to be the case, at least right now. Kardashian has become well-known at fashion’s most important event in recent years, but not because she expertly pulled off a red-carpet moment meant to highlight an enduring work of wearable art.

Rather, Kim Kardashian has made a career out of stirring up controversy by demonstrating to the public that she can bend her body in ways that most regular people cannot fit into gowns. She practically guarantees weeks of online discussion by doing this.

Kim Kardashian

It hasn’t always been this way. Before her partnership with Kanye West, there wasn’t a world in which any Kim Kardashian would have walked the Met Gala red carpet. Many swore that if she and her sisters ever attended, their inclusion as hoi polloi reality stars, not real celebrities, would mark the end of the event’s prestige as we know it (in fact, in 2012 Page Six reported a still-unconfirmed rumor that Anna Wintour herself had banned Kardashian from attending).

When Kardashian finally did make her debut, she did so in 2013 as the date of her then-partner and fashion insider West, pregnant with their first child, no less. She later admitted she was so nervous and sure that no one “wanted her there” that she cried after the event. At the time her tight floral Givenchy dress and gloves ensemble was unusual—and created memes we’re still seeing—but it wasn’t designed to shock.

Google Pixel 8a launched in India with Tensor G3 SoC with Gemini AI: pricing, specifications, launch deals, and more

In the decade since Kardashian and her sisters have all attended many times and are now considered Met Gala staples. However, in the past few years, it seems that Kardashian is less focused on fashion and more focused on the all-consuming need to ensure that we all talk (and talk and talk) about her seemingly nonhuman body.

This started in 2022 with the Marilyn Monroe dress debacle, when Kardashian appeared on the carpet in Monroe’s “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” gown. If you remember, fashion lovers and historians were outraged that Kardashian was allowed to wear the dress at all, especially when it was rumored that she had damaged it in the process (the Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum, which owned the dress, later denied).

Many were disturbed by Kardashian’s casual admission of the drastic measures she took to fit into the dress, mainly that she essentially didn’t eat for three weeks.

“I would wear a sauna suit twice a day, run on the treadmill, completely cut out all sugar and all carbs, and just eat the cleanest veggies and protein,” she told Vogue. “I didn’t starve myself, but I was so strict.”

As we wrote at the time, Kardashian’s promotion of such an extreme crash diet was “both alarming and outdated,” and many people were justifiably up in arms about it. It was all anyone talked about for weeks after the gala, and the instance was among the first to spark the Ozempic discourse, as the drug was relatively unknown to the masses in 2022. She was, for better or for worse, the Met’s main character.

That’s why when I first saw Kardashian’s outfit on the red carpet last night that teeny-tiny waist, I had to roll my eyes. Are we doing this again? It just seems so obvious and tired at this point. Her midsection was crammed into such a ridiculous corset that many joked that it looked like she had her ribs removed. Other commenters on social media noted how physically miserable she looked, wondered if her organs got crushed, and said it looked as though she was crying tears of pain on the red carpet.

Arvind Kejriwal News LIVE: “You Can’t Sign Files If You Get Bail”

We could get mad at her for, once again, showing us an unrealistic and harmful standard of body modification and thinspo. We could debate what it means that she can have the smallest waist in modern history. But I don’t even want to go there.

Why? Because it’s boring at this point. The Kardashian bread and butter is causing scandal and gossip, often at the expense of making women feel bad about the way they look, and it’s frankly stale. We’ve been down this road before, and it’s not even about how she looks anyway. It’s all about the drama and the story, and it’s useless to participate.

Besides, there are so many more interesting things to talk about at the Met. Like Sabrina and Barry! Zendaya! Tyla’s cool sand dress! Even Doja Cat in a towel is more exciting.

Debating whether or not Kim Kardashian is too skinny is a snooze. Especially when we know that it’s all manufactured for us to do just that. So Kim Kardashian  Met Gala 2024 look is one celebrity gossip narrative that I very much would like to be excluded from.

In India, more than 35 Million People Suffer from Asthma: How may this Burden be Lessened?

Globally, asthma is ranked 24th among the leading causes of years lived with disability and continues to be a major source of global economic burden. As per The Global Asthma Report 2022, about 1,000 people per day die of asthma.

  • As per The Global Asthma Report 2022, about 1,000 people per day die of asthma
  • One of the major challenges of asthmatic burden in India is the less use of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS)
  • Control indoor air pollution to lower risk of asthma, say doctors

Asthma is a respiratory disease characterized by chronic airway inflammation. It is quite common as it affects around 262 million people worldwide, as estimated by the Global Burden of Disease Collaboration in 2019.

Asthma is caused by the inflammation and narrowing of the airways in the lungs which leads to difficulty in breathing, chest tightness, and a combination of coughing and wheezing.

Globally, this disease is ranked 24th among the leading causes of years lived with disability and continues to be a major source of global economic burden.

As per The Global Asthma Report 2022, about 1,000 people per day die of asthma. This highlights the seriousness of the issue as most cases are preventable.

On World Asthma Day, doctors share how we can reduce this burden in India, especially since 34.3 million people suffer from asthma. India contributes to 46% of global asthma deaths, as per the latest Global Burden of Disease 2021 Report.

“We must increase awareness and understanding of asthma among both healthcare professionals and the general population. Education is important for prevention and management,” highlighted Dr Amrish Patel, Pulmonologist & Critical Care Specialist, at Sterling Hospitals, Gurukul.

While, in most cases, asthma is diagnosed during childhood, sometimes, the allergic symptoms are developed in adulthood or old age.

The International Study of Asthma and Allergy in Childhood (ISAAC) Phase I (1995) and Phase III (2001–03), showed that around 6% of children in India had current wheezing and identified several environmental factors associated with asthma globally.

These factors include environmental tobacco smoke, cooking with firewood, exposure to heavy truck traffic, obesity, fast-food consumption, dampness in homes and paracetamol or antibiotic use.

One of the major challenges of asthmatic burden in India is the lack of inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) use.

“Although most types of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS), Beta2-agonist and combination inhalers are available at pharmacies these are expensive in comparison to oral formulations,” researchers mentioned in the Global Asthma Report 2022.

Asthma

India’s 5th Gen Fighter Plane is a Deadly, Hidden Force.

They found that many people with asthma still use oral treatment instead of inhalers, which can help prevent symptoms from recurring.

“Most people don’t inhale corticosteroids (ICS) for because they don’t know. People are also worried when they read the name ‘steroids’ they think it will cause side effects in the body which is not true for inhaled corticosteroids since these are inhaled in microgram doses and go directly into the lungs. The benefits outweigh the risks,” said Dr Neetu Jain, Senior Consultant Pulmonologist at PSRI Hospital, New Delhi.

The expert added that one of the major reasons for burden is that some people have been using the same inhalers they have been on since their childhood.

When there is suboptimal control of asthma, over a while, the lung capacity goes down, said Dr Jain.

While research and innovation hold the key to breaking new ground in asthma management and prevention, subtle elements like lifestyle changes and environmental factors are also ways to prevent fatal asthma attacks.

“A variety of environmental triggers, including air pollution and indoor allergens, pose a constant threat to respiratory health. Mitigating these risks is essential and we can create an environment that improves respiratory well-being,” said Dr Patel.

Moreover, managing a stressful lifestyle is important.

Dr Patel pointed out a common taboo among patients who stop their medication after their symptoms get better because they don’t want to be “habitual” of it.

“I suggest that anything that is not required for your body and you take it frequently then it is habitual. But inhalers provide a good quality of life so that taboo shouldn’t exist,” he said.

The common cause of asthma is indoor air pollution like dust, mites, smoke, fungus, and certain kinds of grasses. Even stress can exacerbate in certain people.

But when it comes to controlling , the main cause is indoor air pollution. “We don’t understand that dhoopagarbatti, air freshener, perfumes, and deodorant, use of carpets, moldy places in homes can increase cases of ,” added Dr Jain.

The experts highlighted that people in India should get an early and correct diagnosis and be given the right medication to reduce cases. “Take your inhaled medications regularly and don’t stop till your doctor says so,” advised Dr Patel.

India’s 5th Gen Fighter Plane is a Deadly, Hidden Force.

The Cabinet Committee on Security has flagged off the prototype development and testing stage of India’s indigenous fifth-generation stealth fighter jet, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). Slated to be in production from 2035, it would make the IAF battle-ready for the future

With air power being regarded as the sword arm of offensive operations, as well as crucial in defense, in all modern military doctrines, developing more sophisticated fighter jets has been a continuing objective for top military powers. The term ‘fifth generation fighter aircraft’ (FGFA) is currently used to denote the few most technologically advanced fighter jets—a super elite category—that have been developed over the past 30 years. Such machines have multirole capability, advanced avionics, and networked data fusion (enabling greater situation awareness on the battlefield). But the one quality that sets a fifth generation jet apart from other modern fighters is its ‘stealth’ capability—the quality of being unseen and undetected by enemy’s ground defense radars and aircraft.

Bangladesh vs Zimbabwe Live Score, Streaming Details: When And Where To Watch…

As can be imagined, making a FGFA is a complex task, and only a few

Fighters inhabit that class—the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II and F22 Raptor (US), the Chengdu J-20 Mighty Dragon (China), and the Sukhoi Su-57 Felon (Russia). On February 21, Turkey conducted the maiden test flight of its indigenously developed fifth-generation stealth fighter jet, Kaan. It is developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries and BAE Systems of the UK.

Here in India, aerospace engineers at the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) complex in Vimanpura, an aeronautical hub in Bengaluru, have been quietly working on designing India’s own fifth-generation stealth jet—the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA)—since 2009. Now, in a push that could propel India into the exclusive club of nations that operate FGFAs, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), the country’s highest body on security matters, gave its nod to the next stage of the AMCA project on March 7 by sanctioning Rs 15,000 crore for its prototype development. The five twin-engine prototypes would be made by the ADA—which functions under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) of the Ministry of Defence (MoD)—and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), with support from Indian private firms. The ADA has a 10-year roadmap for making the five prototypes and flight testing thereafter. The prototype itself would take four years to manufacture. If all goes according to plan, the AMCA will start being manufactured from 2035 onwards.

The AMCA is the most significant military project cleared by the Narendra Modi government before the Lok Sabha election. However, it is learnt that there was opposition, including from a section in the armed forces, against the AMCA on account of its high cost. But its developers told the PMO that the project risked losing its relevance if it did not receive the go-ahead now, and that other countries, just like Turkey has, would steal a march on India in developing a stealth jet.

Military aviation experts claim that Turkey started working on its stealth jet in 2010, a year after India announced its own FGFA programme. In 2015, Turkey announced that it would partner with BAE Systems to design the fighter. In contrast, India and Russia (HAL and Russia’s Rosoboronexport and Sukhoi) entered into an agreement to jointly develop a fifth generation jet in 2010, but New Delhi pulled out of it in 2018, after it was felt that the Russians were not willing to share much in terms of technology. The decision to go it alone led to a delay in India’s stealth development.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) plans to deploy around 120 AMCA stealth fighters (six squadrons) starting from 2035. The first two AMCA squadrons will consist of the Mark I version, and will be powered by the American GE Aerospace’s F-414 engines; the remaining four squadrons will have the more advanced Mark II version, with a more powerful, indigenous engine to be developed jointly with foreign collaboration.

State-of-the-art technology

To be capable of avoiding enemy radars and air defence mechanism, a stealth fighter uses specialised paint coating and radar-absorbing material to reduce radar bounce-off, exhaust nozzles that reduce infrared radiation emitted by the engine, exhaust plume and fuselage, technology that reduces the heat signature of the engine and special radars to minimise emissions that enemy radars can pick up. Tied to stealth capability is the internal storage of smart weapons and the ability to supercruise—the sustained supersonic flight of a jet without using afterburners, the component in jet engines used to increase thrust during take-off and supersonic flight—thus making it truly trail-less. The ADA claims to have developed similar technology indigenously. The AMCA will be based on the concept of ‘first look, first kill’ where an AMCA pilot would see an enemy plane first, fire a missile and destroy it before the latter can react. Typical qualities of a fifth gen fighter like low observability and ‘first look, first kill’ capabilities are unavailable in most front-rank fighter jets. In the IAF inventory, not even the Rafales have them. The AMCA will be designed to perform a variety of missions, including air supremacy, ground strike missions, suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD) and electronic warfare.

AMCA designers say that the jet will have a top speed of nearly 2,600 kilometres per hour (Mach 2.15), as well as a combat range of 1,620 km. The fighter will be equipped with a 23 mm cannon and 14 hard points to carry weaponry weighing 6,500 kg. The design is intended for multi-role missions, and to tackle both air-to-air and air-to-ground operations with equal lethality. It also features serpentine air intakes, extensive use of radar-dampening materials, a conformal antenna (embedded in the fuselage, rather than sticking out from it, as in non-stealth jets), and an internal weapons bay—all essential to provide a very low radar signature.

A defence source says that the AMCA will carry BrahMos-NG (next generation) air-to-ground missiles, Astra air-to-air missiles, anti-tank missiles, Rudram air-to-ground anti-radiation missiles, laser-guided bombs and precision munitions.

Dr Ashish Kumar Ghosh, known as the ‘AMCA man’ since he was its project director since inception, tells india today that designers at the ADA have been waiting for the government’s nod for years. Underlining the project’s importance for national security, he says that after years of hard work, India finally has developed its own stealth technology. Now retired, Ghosh also points out that not all fifth generation jets have every ‘stealth’ feature. “But India’s AMCA is going to be a real stealth jet,” he says. The AMCA, emphasises Ghosh, is not a copy of any existing platform. It also must be mentioned that the AMCA’s design and the development of its various technologies happened in tandem.

Dr Girish Deodhare, former head of the ADA, says he is delighted with the government’s go-ahead. “We have been working on the AMCA for over a decade. Government sanction came at the right time, as most of the technologies are matured.”

Another senior scientist involved in the project points to the all-round effort taken to develop the cutting-edge stealth technologies. “For LCA (Light Combat Aircraft) Tejas, we had some consultancies. But when fifth gen technologies came up, these consultants would clam up. So, all the technologies have been developed indigenously, with many trials and errors. It has been a truly national effort,” he says. Agencies involved included DRDO labs, academic institutions, CSIR (the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) labs, PSUs and private agencies.

Gen Fighter Plane

The long struggle

In 2005, after the US launched the F22 Raptor, India formed a study group to consider 5th Gen Fighter jet capabilities. Subsequently, in 2009, a budget of Rs 90 crore was given to the ADA to carry out a feasibility study for a stealth fighter jet. Four years later in 2013, AMCA developers worked out the first feasible configuration, which was accepted by the IAF.

But, in between in 2010, enthused with the success of the India-Russia BrahMos cruise missile project, both nations agreed to develop an FGFA in a joint venture. A preliminary design contract was inked, with the agreement that Russia would procure 250 and India 144 aircraft at a cost of around $30 billion (Rs 2.46 lakh crore) by 2022. After working jointly for years, India pulled out of the project in 2018 over differences with Russia on issues like the transfer of technology and design specifications of the aircraft. That same year, the government approved an additional Rs 447 crore for completion of the design and development of stealth technologies for India’s future 5th Gen Fighter.

Over the past decade, the absence of a roadmap for jet engines slowed down India’s fighter jet programme, including the AMCA project, as New Delhi negotiated with Washington for the joint production of GE 414 engines in India. With the US agreeing to share jet engine technology with India in 2023, the first 40 AMCAs are expected to fly on these GE engines. The advanced AMCA Mark II version will need a more powerful 110kN high-thrust engine for better supercruise abilities, which will be co-developed in India.

Since a 5th Gen Fighter stealth fighter is an extremely high-cost platform, no country with the capability has it in large numbers. Likewise, the IAF has expressed a need for six squadrons of the AMCA (including four of the Mk-II version). The first five prototype jets will cost nearly Rs 900 crore each, but the cost will reduce at the production stage.

All sensors, avionics and flight control systems of the AMCA are to be indigenous—over 70 per cent of the aircraft—except for the GE-414 engine and the ejection seat. “Since AMCA is an indigenous 5th Gen Fighter aircraft, it is less costly than similar aircraft available outside,” Ajay Bhatt, the minister of state for defence, stated in Parliament in 2022.

By the IAF’s reckoning, the 5th Gen Fighter would form an important element of future air combat. Air Marshal S.B.S. Sinha (retd), former deputy chief of the IAF, points out that centres of gravity (points of strength of a military) of every country are heavily defended by a mix of long-range sophisticated missile systems. “Therefore, you require stealth aircraft to beat enemy’s AD (air defence) sensors to neutralise high-value targets, while other fighters continue routine missions. Stealth aircraft can also be used in non-stealth roles, wherein it can carry heavy underwing and underbelly weapons like normal fighters,” he adds.

Ghosh says that now that the government has allocated the budget, the prototypes must be made at the earliest. He stresses that the capability of manufacturing the AMCA also needs to be developed speedily once a final version has been certified. “Only then can we get the best of its 5th Gen Fighter next generation features,” he says.
