Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, The Dera Chief, was Cleared in the 2002 Murder Case.

In 2021, a CBI court convicted Ram Rahim Singh of the murder case and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court today acquitted Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim of the murder of a former Dera officer. Ranjit Singh, a member of the Dera’s state committee, was killed in 2002. It is said that the murder was motivated by his suspected involvement in the distribution of an anonymous letter detailing Ram Rahim’s sexual exploitation of women at the Dera headquarters in Sirsa, Haryana.

In 2021, a CBI court convicted Ram Rahim and four others of murder and sentenced them to life in prison. The special court ruled that it was shown beyond a reasonable doubt that the Dera chief was enraged by the letter’s publication and conspired with the other suspects to murder Ranjit Singh. Dera’s 56-year-old chief had disputed the conviction in the high court. The four others convicted by the CBI court were also acquitted today.

The notorious Dera chief is in jail after being convicted of raping two sadhvis at the dera and murdering journalist Ram Chander Prajapati, who had extensively written on the Dera chief’s sexual assault charges.

The Dera Sacha Sauda made headlines when horrifying sexual assault allegations against Gurmeet Ram Rahim surfaced, prompting the CBI to launch an investigation. The Dera leader claimed to be impotent in 2014, a decade after the investigation began, but the court disregarded his allegation. His 2017 conviction provoked widespread riots and arson. Thirty people killed, more than 250 were injured, and the Army was called in to help contain the situation. Ram Rahim is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence and has filed a high court appeal against his conviction.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim’s lawyers today welcomed the high court’s decision and stated that the Dera chief has entire faith in the justice.

Ab Ki Baar, KKR, Kolkata Club Wins its Third IPL Title after Crushing Sunrisers Hyderabad.

In the most unbalanced final in IPL history, KKR outsmarts SRH to win their first title since 2014, and Gambhir becomes the first captain and mentor to win the trophy.

Venkatesh Iyer was on strike, and the Kolkata Knight Riders dugout was on its feet as they were only one run away from a resounding eight-wicket victory in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 final. The left-hander paddle-swept for a single, setting up loud celebrations in the KKR camp.

IPL 2024 Final: Kolkata Knight Riders vs Sunrisers Hyderabad

The entire team came out to celebrate with the two Iyers, Venkatesh and Shreyas, and the owners were overjoyed in the stands as their wait for an IPL victory was finally over. The cameras kept hunting for mentor Gautam Gambhir, who was busy offering bear embraces to the entire group while smiling broadly. The DJ instantly turned to Chak De India, and the party began for the Kolkata Knight Riders, the IPL 2024 champions.

The IPL final has frequently been a rematch of Qualifier 1, and the title match of the 2024 edition was no exception. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) were the two most consistent teams during the regular rounds, but the Playoffs are a different beast.

Even the best in the business have found it difficult to dominate the knockouts, and SRH certainly faced KKR’s heat this year. Not once, but twice as after Qualifier 1 they were outsmarted by Shreyas Iyer & Co. in what turned out to be the most lopsided final in IPL history.

SRH just didn’t have enough runs on the board and became the first side to get bowled out in the final, that too without facing 20 overs. 113 – SRH’s third-lowest total in the IPL and the lowest total in an IPL final – was never going to pose any challenge to this KKR unit and mere formalities were left to be completed in the second innings of the match.

There was a consolation wicket of Sunil Narine early in the innings but just one-way traffic after that as Venkatesh Iyer and Rahmanullah Gurbaz put on 91 runs in lightning-quick time to put the side on home stretch.

Bowling masterclass

The batting, however, was never going to be a point of discussion today as the night was set-up by the bowlers. KKR served a bowling masterclass in the title clash and Mitchell Starc, the most expensive player in the league’s history, led from the front with a probing spell which put SRH on the mat.

Even before he bowled his first delivery, the quick was in the opposition’s head as Travis Head decided not to take strike. Starc had dismissed him the last time two sides met in Qualifier 1 and it was young Abhishek Sharma in the firing line now.

From the first delivery, there was enough movement and the fifth ball which came out of the left-armer’s hand was a ripper! Pitched on length, it swung away late and crashed into the stumps.

Abhishek stood shocked and the SRH dugout wore a worried look as celebrations began in the KKR camp. In consecutive games now, KKR clipped the wings of high-flying SRH openers and never allowed their innings to get any momentum whatsoever.

Head stayed away from strike vs Starc but was dismissed for a golden duck by Vaibhav Arora from the other end. Rahul Tripathi came and went, and the batters to follow had no answers to the versatile seamers of KKR. If Starc was moving them at a brisk pace, Arora had a nice natural angle into the right-hander and Harshit Rana was mixing his pace smartly.

There was just on respite from both ends and even when seamers were given a break, Andre Russell and the spin-twins – Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine – sustained pressure in the middle overs.

Pat Cummins & Co. kept losing wickets at regular intervals and never had a partnership going their way. It was just the second time in the IPL that six different bowlers picked a wicket. That’s how good KKR were in the title clash.

The only thing which didn’t go KKR’s way was the toss as they outplayed the opposition in every department to register a very comprehensive win.

An official from Papua New Guinea national disaster centre wrote to the United Nations that more than 2,000 people were buried alive in Friday’s landslip.

According to the Papua New Guinea national disaster centre, a landslip in a rural village in the country’s north killed almost 2,000 people on Friday.

“The landslip buried more than 2,000 people alive, destroyed buildings and food gardens, and had a significant impact on the country’s economic lifeline,” a national disaster centre official told the United Nations in a letter.

Remaining residents are being evacuated as the region remains high-risk amid forecasts of further rain.

“The ground is also quite unstable at the moment and it is at risk of triggering further landslide,” said Justine McMahon, the country co-ordinator of Care Australia, one of the humanitarian aid agencies on the ground.

“We’ve decided to stay out for now to allow the authorities time to properly assess the situation to conduct the rescue and recovery operations.”

Earlier, an official for the UN’s migration agency in the country had also described to the BBC the difficulties around the rescue.

Serhan Aktoprak from the International Organization for Migration said there were a number of challenges facing teams trying to recover bodies, including reluctance by some grieving relatives to let heavy machinery near their loved ones.

Instead, he said, “people are using digging sticks, spades, large agricultural forks to remove the bodies buried under the soil”.

Debris from the landslide, which includes large boulders, trees and displaced soil.

Crews at the scene also say rescue efforts are being hindered by major damage to the sole road leading to the town. The landslide has damaged a length of about 200m (650ft), Ms McMahon said.

The Mount Mungalo landslide occurred in the highlands of Enga, in the north of the island nation.

Local officials and reporters have attributed the mountain’s collapse to weeks of heavy rain and other wet conditions in the area.

NSE Decreases tick size to one Paisa: Over 1,300 Stocks will be Affected.

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) said on Friday that it will cut the ticket size, also known as the tick size, for equities priced up to Rs 250 per share.
The current tick size for stocks traded on the NSE is Rs 0.05, or 5 paisa. The NSE aims to cut the tick size to Rs 0.01 or 1 paisa, allowing buyers and sellers to submit orders to purchase and sell stocks for less than Rs 250 in multiples of 1 paisa, such as Rs 101.01 and so on.

According to the NSE media release, all cash and futures stocks under Rs 250, except stock options, would be traded using a 1 paisa tick size.
The NSE’s counterpart, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), already uses the 0.01 tick scale, but only for stocks worth less than Rs 100.
Analysts feel that a smaller tick size, particularly in the case of lower-valued shares, aids price discovery.

Kranti Bathini, Director-Equity WealthMills Securities says its a welcome step from the NSE. Lower tick size will help in improve the spreads, and the volumes too can rise.

Meanwhile, NSE’s release stated that the lowered tick size shall be applicable for new listings as well. The exchange shall determine the eligibility for all such shares as of the last trading day of a particular month.

Arvinder Singh Nanda, Senior Vice President at Master Capital Services said the NSE’s move to lower the tick size aims to bolster price discovery and market efficiency, rendering trading more appealing for both retail investors and traders.

Moreover, the tick size in the stock futures segment will align with that of the underlying security in the cash market. This alteration will empower investors to devise novel strategies tailored to the smaller tick sizes, particularly for lower-priced securities, Arvinder Singh Nanda added in the note, while cautioning that the said move may also escalate system load due to the large number of orders.

The new tick size rule on the NSE will be applicable from July 08, 2024 onwards, based on the closing price of June 2024. NSE shall review the of underlying security on a monthly basis.

Modi, Shah, and Fadnavis collaborated to Defeat Gadkari in Nagpur, According to Sanjay Raut.

Maharashtra BJP leaders believe Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut’s Nitin Gadkari charges have gone beyond civility.

Sanjay Raut, leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), has claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis attempted to defeat Union Minister Nitin Gadkari in the Nagpur Lok Sabha constituency during the elections.

“Gadkari yancha Nagpurat parabhav vhava yasathi Modi, Shah, Fadnavis ekatra ale, prayatna kele (To ensure Gadkari’s defeat in Nagpur, Modi, Shah and Fadnavis came together and made attempts),” the MP wrote in his weekly column in the Sena newspaper, Saamna.

Raut went on to write that Fadnavis only campaigned for Gadkari when it became clear that the Union Minister would not be defeated.
“Parabhav hoot nahi yachi khatri patlyawar Fadnavis, hey nailajani Nagpurat pracharala utarle.” (When it became clear Gadkari would not be beaten, Fadnavis had no choice except to advocate for him)”.

Raut, the executive editor of Saamna, also said in his column that “if Amit Shah gets power again, he will finish Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath”. In Uttar Pradesh, the campaign, he stated, “Yogi ko bachana hain tau Modi ko jana hain (If you have to save Yogi Adityanath, Modi has to go)”.

The Shiv Sena (UBT) leader’s statements sparked a heated reaction from the state BJP, which dismissed them as ludicrous.

Senior BJP minister Sudhir Mungantiwar said, “Sanjay Raut has this habit of making sensational statements. But this time he has made ridiculous allegations that are not only false but utter nonsense.”

State BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule said, “Sanjay Raut is known for making statements which are never based on facts. This time he has crossed all the limits of decency by making wild and baseless allegations.”

‘Not Injured’: Neeraj Chopra Pulls Out Of Ostrava Golden Spike Meet.

Neeraj Chopra was scheduled to compete in Ostrava’s Golden Spike event on May 28, however the organisers have issued a statement confirming that the Indian javelin throw champion would not attend.

Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra has stated that he is not hurt. The decision to pull out of the Ostrava Golden Spike competition in the Czech Republic on May 28 is purely precautionary.

He claimed that during a training session, he felt “something” in his adductors. To avoid injury in an Olympic year, he has decided to forego the famous event.

The javelin throw champion was set to compete in the Czech Republic this week, but has now withdrawn. Neeraj Chopra was set to compete in Ostrava’s Golden Spike meet on May 28.

The promoters had already announced that the Indian javelin throw champion would not be competing in the event owing to an injury.

“The organisers took note of a message from Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra.” He will be unable to throw in Ostrava because to an adductor muscle injury received in training two weeks ago,” according to the statement.

“He will arrive at the event as a guest,” it stated.

Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal in the men’s javelin final in Bhubaneshwar’s Kalinga Stadium with an impressive throw of 82.27 metres. He stopped after four tosses at the Stadium on Wednesday, May 15. The throw was significantly less than his personal best of 88.94m set during the Stockholm Diamond League in 2022.

“Don’t talk about the toss; it wasn’t up to par. “This is not one of my consistent performances,” Neeraj stated after the event.

“It was amazing to compete in India after such a long period. I wanted to play in India, therefore I performed according on the environment and how my body felt. I have a few important competitions coming up. “I thought DP Manu would take over, but his javelin kept landing quickly,” Neeraj explained.

Cannes 2024: Payal Kapadia’s ‘All We Imagine As Light’ brings India back in competition at Cannes with an 8-Minute standing ovation.

Cannes 2024: Screening in the late-night competition slot, the film was the first Indian production in the competition in three decades and the first by an Indian woman filmmaker to achieve this honor

Payal Kapadia and the cast of her film, All We Imagine As Light, made a fashion splash and left quite an impression on international critics – at its world premiere at Cannes on Thursday night. All We Imagine…’ is the first Indian movie in 30 years to qualify for the festival’s competition section, which makes Kapadia a contender for the prestigious Palme d’Or. The eight-minute standing ovation at the end of the film’s screening was definitely among the longest of this edition of the film festival.

Payal Kapadia is in competition with “European heavyweights such as Jacques Audiard and Yorgos Lanthimos, American auteurs David Cronenberg and Paul Schrader, and Asian visionary Jia Zhangke”, as IndieWire reminds us.

Whether the film gets the trophy or not, it did leave international critics impressed after the screening, with Peter Bradshaw of ‘The Guardian’ showering praise on it for its “freshness and emotional clarity” and comparing Kapadia’s “fluent and absorbing” storytelling with Satyajit Ray’s in his classics, Mahanagar and Aranyer Din Ratri.

Before the screening, the internationally funded film’s star cast adorned the red carpet on the steps of the Palais du Festival, with Kani Kusruti standing out with her watermelon clutch (the green and red clutch was literally designed like a cut section of the fruit!); Divya Prabha looking a world apart from her character in the film in her classy copper-hued gown; and Hridu Haroon appearing in a veshti and long embellished kurta. Kapadia and her co-producer/cinematographer, Ranabir Das, however, settled for formal blacks.

The early reviews to pour in after the screening were glowing. In her review of the ‘gorgeous and absorbing film’, Sophie Monk-Kaufman of IndieWire wrote: This casual everyday vignette is brimming with a sensuality (the rain, the clothes, the food, the women) that people don’t tend to notice when caught up in the rhythm of life. It takes a snapshot from a photographer removed from the situation to make you realise how full these moments are.”

In the words of Fionnuala Halligan, “This fiction debut from a talented documentarian brings to mind the work of Lucrecia Martel or Alice Rohrwacher, yet there’s a strong romantic streak that also calls to mind Wong Kar-wai’s great love affair with the city of Hong Kong.”

And Jordan Mintzer of ‘The Hollywood Reporter’ could resist comparing the languorous film with the cinema the world now expects from India. He commented: ‘All We Imagine as Light’ is about as far as you can get from the stylistics of Bollywood’s masala musicals, even if there is one short and memorable impromptu dance scene toward the end. And yet its story of women looking for love and happiness in a calamitous world brings to mind those popular Mumbai-set movies, in which heroines suffer plenty of heartbreak before things eventually work out.”

Will the jury share the emotions behind the gushing reception to All We Imagine…, or hear the eight-minute standing ovation? Will Kapadia come back home with the Palme d’Or? We will know only when the awards are announced.
