IMD Update (120 flights delayed: Delhi Airport reports delays in flight operations, affecting around 120 flights. 53 flights, including 21 Domestic arrivals, 16 Domestic departures, 13 International departures, and 3 International arrivals, are cancelled and not operating due to fog and other operational reasons.

According to forecasts by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), extremely dense fog conditions are expected to persist throughout North India for the next four days. The weather service added that Delhi and northern India would continue to see extreme cold waves and days with low temperatures.

Flights affected in Delhi Airport

The heavy fog on Wednesday caused a total of 120 flights—both local and foreign—to have their arrivals and departures delayed, according to the Delhi Airport Flight Information Display System (FIDS).

In addition, the Delhi Airport FIDS reported that a total of 53 scheduled flights—21 domestic arrivals, 16 domestic departures, 13 international departures, and 3 international arrivals—are canceled or not operating from and to Delhi airport because of fog and other operational issues.

Trains affected in Delhi

Delhi train services are impacted by the persistently thick fog in the area. At the New Delhi Railway Station (NDRS), passengers could be seen waiting as multiple trains experienced delays due to fog-related poor visibility.

IMD alert on Cold wave, Dense Fog

  • From January 17 to 21, extremely dense fog conditions are probably going to be present throughout Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi.
  • Very dense fog conditions are probably going to be present throughout Uttar Pradesh on January 17–18 in the morning, with isolated pockets of dense fog continuing for the next three days.
  • On January 17 and 18, 2024, extremely dense fog conditions are probably going to be present over Uttarakhand and northern Madhya Pradesh.
  • Isolated areas of Bihar and north Rajasthan are expected to see dense fog conditions from January 17–21; Jharkhand, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim will likely experience them from January 17–20; and Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura will likely experience them from January 17–19.
  • On January 17 and 18, as well as on January 17, dense fog conditions are predicted for Himachal Pradesh, Jammu division, Gangetic West Bengal, and Odisha.
  • On January 17 and 18, severe cold weather is probably going to persist in various areas of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh.
  • On January 17, severe cold weather is probably going to persist in several areas of Uttar Pradesh.
  • On January 17, severe cold day conditions are probably going to persist in a few areas of Bihar, and on January 18–20, cold day conditions are probably going to persist in a few areas.

IMD minimum temperature alert

Rise by about 2°C in minimum temperatures very likely over Northwest India during next 2 days and no significant change thereafter.

Rise by 2-4°C in minimum temperatures very likely over East India during next 4 days and no significant change thereafter.

No significant change in minimum temperatures likely over rest parts of the country during next 5 days.

Ground frost conditions very likely over Uttarakhand on 17 January

On January 16, the lowest minimum temperature of 1 degree Celsius was reported at Ludhiana (Punjab) over the plains of the country.
