  • VK Saxena urges inquiry headed by Finance Minister Sitharaman

In a revelation, the Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Delhi, VK Saxena, pointed out that the national capital has a dubious record of the highest tax evasion across the states and Union Territories in the country.

In a letter to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, LG Saxena exposed the alarming state of tax governance in the city.

“Delhi has achieved the ignominious distinction of recording the highest tax evasion in the country,” the Lieutenant Governor’s letter stated.

He further provided the damning statistics – 483 bogus firms have been detected, accounting for a whopping Rs. 3,028 crore of tax evasion.

To put this in perspective, Delhi’s tax evasion outstrips by Rs 827 crore, the state placed second in this notorious list.

Furthermore, Saxena implied the possible involvement of the local GST Department’s officials in these malpractices.

He urged Kejriwal to initiate a meticulously planned inquiry into the matter, headed by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, to get to the bottom of such a rampant amount of tax evasion and its root cause.

The fact that the national capital leads the chart of tax evasion among all states and Union Territories is certainly unsettling.

Saxena asserted that this hints at a poor state of tax governance in the city, seriously undermining the public’s faith in the system.
