“Modi ki Guarantee”: The focal point of the BJP’s election campaign

Candidates and cadre members are advised to continue promoting the idea of the “Modi ki Guarantee” rather than depending solely on the “Modi ki rally.”

When senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders convened behind closed doors for the party’s national executive in January of last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the dangers of overconfidence and complacency. He warned his party members that resting on their laurels and depending too much on his popularity to win elections would be their downfall when he laid out the schedule for the Lok Sabha elections.

The BJP, which has enjoyed considerable success in state polls over the past ten years and a strong run at the hustings since 2014, has also suffered setbacks. The most recent was in the assembly election in Telangana, which the party seemed certain to win.

An alarm was raised in 2018 by a string of defeats in the Hindi-majority states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh as well as the by-election in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, the chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s stronghold. After a convincing victory in 2014, the cadre dropped the ball, which was largely to blame for these losses.

In 2023, the party was able to retake these states, but Modi’s popularity with the public was credited for the victory. He is the main vote-getter and campaigner for the party.

The top leadership of the party has made it clear that it will not tolerate complacency or overconfidence as it works to win 370 of the 543 Lok Sabha seats. This is especially true in states like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Karnataka where the party has historically performed admirably.

With an alliance with the Janata Dal (United), the party secured 39 of the 40 seats in Bihar in 2019, 62 of the 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh, 28 of 29 in Madhya Pradesh, 24 of 25 in Rajasthan, 11 of the 14 seats in Jharkhand, 9 of 11 in Chhattisgarh, and 25 of 28 seats in Karnataka.

Senior party leaders have been urged to make sure there are no mistakes made when canvassing on the ground, despite the opinion surveys and pollsters’ predictions that the BJP and its allies will win handily. According to a leader in Rajasthan, there are continuous reminders to the workers not to slack off, even though the cadre is encouraged by the recent victory in the state elections and opinion surveys like the one by India TV-CNX, which indicates that the BJP is likely to repeat its 2019 performance in the state.

The election campaign has scheduled door-to-door campaigns, digital outreach, corner meetings, road shows, and professional development programs.

The message to candidates and cadre in Madhya Pradesh, where the recent victory in the state polls exceeded expectations, is to continue promoting the idea of “Modi ki Guarantee” rather than depending just on “Modi ki rally.”
