In an unexpected change of events, the 32-year-old took out cricket superstar Sachin Tendulkar to emerge as the unexpected hero in the opening ISPL encounter. As Khiladi XI bowled at a medium pace, Faruqui delivered a wide delivery beyond off-stump, which caused Tendulkar to attempt a shot towards fine-leg. But Tendulkar, who has played in 200 Test matches, ultimately top-edged the ball and was caught at gully by Naman Ojha. The excitement in the Dadoji Kondadev Stadium in Thane broke out as Faruqui accomplished this amazing achievement in the fifth over of the game.

Munavar Faruqui Also Impresses With His Fielding In ISPL 2024 Special Match

Faruqui’s impact didn’t end with the wicket of Tendulkar. In the 7th over, he displayed his fielding prowess by taking a catch to dismiss Yusuf Pathan, off the bowling of actor Prateik Babbar. Pathan contributed 21 runs to the Master’s 11 total, which reached 95 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 10 overs.

Tendulkar, who serves as an investor and Core Committee Member of ISPL 2024, opened the batting with J&K para cricket team captain Amir Hussain Lone. Despite the relative early departure of Tendulkar and Pathan, the Master’s 11 showcased their cricketing skills in the spirited match and eventually ended up winning the contest.

Padmaja Venugopal, daughter of ex-Kerala Chief Minister, likely to join BJP

Padmaja Venugopal, daughter of Congress veteran and former Kerala Chief Minister K Karunakaran is likely to quit Congress and join BJP, according to sources.

Padmaja Venugopal

In Short

  • Padmaja Venugopal likely to quit Congress and join BJP
  • Padmaja deleted Facebook post dismissing reports suggesting her switching sides
  • Her brother, K Muraleedharan, says her switch would not benefit BJP even an ounce.

Padmaja Venugopal, daughter of late Congress stalwart and former Kerala Chief Minister K Karunakaran, is likely to quit Congress and join BJP, according to sources.

The speculation gained traction on Wednesday after Padmaja deleted a Facebook post dismissing reports suggesting her switching sides. Padmaja, about her potential move to the BJP, initially clarified that it was merely a joke but later removed the post, intensifying the speculation.

Meanwhile, her brother, and party MP K Muraleedharan on Thursday said that her decision was a betrayal and would not benefit the BJP even an ounce.

Muraleedharan said that their father, Karunakaran, had never compromised with communalism and for a member of his family to join the BJP was a sad outcome as far as people with a secular mindset were concerned.

“However, taking Padmaja will not benefit the BJP even an ounce. It will also not affect our determination to fight. We will push the BJP to third spot everywhere, including in seats where they hope to win. This betrayal would be answered through the EVMs,” the Congress MP said.

Padmaja was reportedly upset with the leadership sidelining her. She had contested from Thrissur constituency during the last Assembly election and lost to the left front.

“Padmaja was thrice given the party ticket to contest polls in Kerala and each time she had lost,” Muraleedharan said.

“So, the claims that others in the party were behind her defeat were not acceptable as there are many who have tried to do that to me. I have not complained about it because it is the people who decide who should win or not,” he said.

He further said that there was a time when he had to leave the party, but even then he did not compromise with the BJP and join it, even though it would have been very easy to do so, as his father was someone who never compromised with communalism.

Padmaja Venugopal’s entry would be a major boost to the BJP in the state, ahead of the April-May Lok Sabha elections.

Indian Street Premier League (ISPL 2024)

The Gully Cricket Tournament, also known as the Celebrity Premier League, officially began play yesterday, according to online rumors! T10 cricket is a new format that is being played in stadiums, having been around for about 20 years after T20 cricket. The Indian Street Premier League (ISPL) is the inaugural T10 tennis ball competition.

Six clubs from major Indian cities—Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, and Srinagar—are participating in the Indian Super League (IPL). From March 6 to March 15, 2024, these teams will play 19 games, all of which will be held in Mumbai.

In contrast to traditional cricket, the Indian Super League (IPL) seeks to transform the game by giving street cricket talent a global platform. It aims to develop the next generation of cricket players and infuse city cricket with a fresh degree of structure.

Essentially, the Indian Super League (IPL) is a tennis-ball cricket add-on that seeks to highlight street cricket players’ unbridled talent and enthusiasm on a large scale.

ISPL T10 Rules & Regulations

The ISPL, cricket’s latest addition, has brought several innovative concepts to the table. Let’s discuss about them little bit:

  • Tip Toss: The tournament has given a unique name to the toss, inspired by street cricket. For those familiar with street cricket rules, this is self-explanatory.
  • Powerplay Rules: Similar to limited-overs’ games, the first few overs are mandatory powerplays. In the ISPL, the mandatory powerplay consists of two overs, with one over designated as the batting powerplay. During the mandatory powerplay, only two fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle. For the batting powerplay, three fielders are permitted outside the circle. The batting powerplay of one over must be taken between overs 3-9.
  • Super Over: In the event of a tie, a Super Over, similar to a T20 match, will be played to determine the winner. This process continues until there is a clear winner.
  • 9 Street Runs: A unique concept introduced in this tournament awards nine runs to the batting team if the ball goes over the fence and lands among the audience, instead of the regular six in cricket.
  • 50-50 Over: Each team’s captain must select five bowlers from the playing XI who can bowl this over during an innings. In a 50-50 over, one team sets a score, and the other team must chase it down. Failure to do so results in a deduction from the final score. This was demonstrated in an exhibition match between Masters XI and Khiladi XI, where Masters XI failed to chase down a target of 16 runs, resulting in a seven-run deduction.
  • Tape Ball Over: While the entire match is played with a tennis ball, one or a maximum of two overs out of the 10 must be bowled with a tape ball. A tape ball is a tennis ball covered with tape, producing the same amount of swing in the air as a normal cricket ball. However, a tape-ball over cannot be used for a 50-50 over.
  • Fielding Restrictions: A maximum of five fielders are allowed outside the circle during the non-powerplay overs. Each team cannot have more than five fielders on the leg side and two behind the popping crease when a ball is being bowled.
  • Playing XI and Substitutions: Each team can select two substitutes during a match. An injured player can be replaced by an unsold player from the same zone. Every team in the inaugural ISPL can have a maximum of 16 players, with the playing XI including one player from each of the North, South, East, West, and Central zones. Additionally, a player under 19 years of age must also be included in the XI.

PM in Srinagar today, first since Article 370 scrapping

In his first visit to Srinagar since the abrogation of Article 370, PM Modi will today address a rally and unveil multiple development projects.

In Short

  • PM on first Srinagar visit since Article 370 abrogation
  • To launch projects worth Rs 6,400 crore in Srinagar
  • To distribute appointment letters to nearly 1,000 new government employees

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to address a public meeting and unveil multiple development projects worth more than Rs 6,400 crore in Srinagar on Thursday.

In his first visit to Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370, the Prime Minister will also attend the ‘Viksit Bharat Viksit Jammu Kashmir’ programme at the stadium in Srinagar.

According to an official statement, PM Narendra Modi will launch nationwide projects related to the tourism sector worth more than Rs 1,400 crore under the ‘Swadesh Darshan’ and ‘PRASHAD’ (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation And Spiritual, Heritage Augmentation Drive) schemes, including a project for the integrated development of the Hazratbal shrine in Srinagar.

He will launch the ‘Dekho Apna Desh People’s Choice Tourist Destination Poll’ and the ‘Chalo India Global Diaspora’ campaign as well, besides announcing tourist destinations selected under the Challenge-Based Destination Development (CBDD) scheme.

PM Modi will distribute appointment letters to nearly 1,000 newly recruited government employees in Jammu and Kashmir and also interact with the beneficiaries of various central schemes, including women achievers, farmers and entrepreneurs, the statement said.

PM in Srinagar today, first since Article 370 scrapping

In a step that will provide a major boost to the agri-economy of the region under the ‘Holistic Agriculture Development Programme’ (HADP) to be launched by the Prime Minister, the statement said, it will cover the full spectrum of activities in three major domains of horticulture, agriculture and livestock husbandry.

The programme is expected to equip about 2.5 lakh farmers with skill-development training and about 2,000 farmers’ service centres will be established and robust value chains put in place for the welfare of the farming community.

The tourism projects to be launched by PM Modi are in line with his vision to improve the overall experience of tourists and pilgrims visiting prominent pilgrimage and tourism sites across the country by building world-class infrastructure and amenities at these sites, the statement said.

Besides the Hazratbal shrine project, the initiatives include tourism facilities in the Northeast Circuit in Meghalaya, the Spiritual Circuit in Bihar and Rajasthan, the Rural and Tirthankar Circuit in Bihar and some other projects in states such as Telangana and Madhya Pradesh.

The Prime Minister will also launch 43 projects that will develop a wide range of pilgrimage and tourist sites across the country.

“The campaign is being launched based on the clarion call of the Prime Minister, wherein he requested Indian diaspora members to encourage at least five non-Indian friends to travel to India. With more than three crore overseas Indians, the Indian diaspora can serve as a powerful catalyst for Indian tourism, acting as cultural ambassadors,” the statement said.

STRICT SECURITY IN PLACE

Meanwhile, stringent security arrangements have been put in place, and the Bakshi Stadium, the venue of the prime minister’s rally, has been draped in tricolour, news agency PTI reported.

With the Lok Sabha elections around the corner and opposition parties seeking an announcement on assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir, the Prime Minister’s scheduled visit has acquired a keen political dimension in terms of what he might have to say on the issue.

In Srinagar, several schools falling along the route to be taken by the Prime Minister were ordered closed for Wednesday and Thursday, while board examinations scheduled to be held on Thursday were postponed till next month.

Drones and CCTV cameras are being used for surveillance while foot patrolling by the security forces has been intensified in a two-kilometre radius around the venue.

Marine commandos have been deployed in the Jhelum River and Dal Lake to prevent the use of these water bodies for any subversive activities.

The BJP-led Centre abrogated the provisions of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, and bifurcated the erstwhile state into the Union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Bengaluru blast: What CCTV footage found about Rameshwaram Cafe ‘bomber’?

Bengaluru blast: The suspect entered Cafe at 11.34am, exited at 11.43am, and walked to a bus stop over a kilometre away.

Bengaluru blast

While the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday announced a cash reward of ₹10 lakh for information about the suspected bomber in the March 1 Rameshwaram Cafe blast case in Bengaluru, CCTV camera footage of a suspect has reportedly revealed some aspects of his identity.

The investigation into the blast at the cafe was handed over to the NIA earlier this week. At least 10 people were injured in the blast at Rameshwaram Cafe in Brookfield in East Bengaluru on March 1. The explosion is suspected to have been carried out through an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). Soon after the blast, the Karnataka Police registered a case under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Explosives Substances Act.

The Indian Express, citing CCTV camera footage, reported that the suspect arrived on a public bus at a bus stop, which is about 100 metres from the cafe, at around 10.45am. He entered into the cafe at 11.34am, exited at 11.43am, and subsequently walked to a bus stop over a kilometre away for his escape using public buses.

Unnamed sources told the newspaper that the CCTV camera trail of the suspect has provided some key leads including his facial features.

More about Bengaluru cafe blast suspect

  • The suspect used multiple public buses for both carrying the explosive device and escaping the scene afterwards. Along the way, he made several stops, including at a Muslim religious centre a few kilometres away from the incident site during the getaway process, The Indian Express reported citing the sources.
  • A baseball cap worn by the suspect at the café has been found at one of the stopover locations during the escape. It is suspected that the suspect changed his clothing at a stop where the cap was discarded.
  • The improvised explosive device (IED) responsible for the explosion was planted in a corner of the café, close to a hand-washing area. Police sources said the device, containing nuts and bolts as shrapnel, had its impact mitigated by the presence of a nearby wall and tree, the newspaper added.

Karnataka home minister G Parameshwara on Sunday said business rivalry, impending elections and terrorising investors coming to Bengaluru in view of a stable government in the state are some of the angles which the police were working on to crack relating to the blast at a city eatery.

He said police have procured about 40 to 50 CCTV footage.

“There is information that he came by a bus…26 buses passed there around that time. We went through all the 26 buses. We have found the bus in which he travelled. He was wearing a cap, mask and glasses. We are not getting clarity there as well,” G Parameshwara had said.

India’s first metro line ‘under any mighty river’ opened by PM in Kolkata

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s first metro line “under any mighty river” in Kolkata today, a landmark project showcasing the nation’s infrastructure development.

In Short

  • PM Modi inaugurates India’s first underwater metro in Kolkata
  • Will cover 520-metre stretch under the Hooghly in 45 seconds
  • He takes first metro rise with school students

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated India’s first metro line “under any mighty river” in Kolkata today, a landmark project showcasing the nation’s stride towards infrastructure development.

He also laid the foundation stone of multiple connectivity projects worth Rs 15,400 crore.

The metro railway services flagged off by the Prime Minister include operations from Kolkata Metro’s Kavi Subhash, Majerhat and the Esplanade stations; Kochi Metro, Agra Metro, Meerut-RRTS section and Pune Metro.

The underwater service is part of the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section of Kolkata Metro’s East-West corridor, which will cover a distance of 4.8 km under the Hooghly river.

The metro service will connect Howrah and Salt Lake — the West Bengal state capital’s twin cities. Three out of six stations will be underground. It is expected to zoom through a 520-metre stretch under the Hooghly in just 45 seconds.

India's first metro line

The Prime Minister took the first ride on the underwater metro with several school students.

A video from inside the metro train’s premises, shows Modi interacting with the school children sitting next to him, while some of them stood near him.

He waved to passengers of another metro train when it passed by the one he was riding on.

West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar and the Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Suvendu Adhikari, along with several metro staffers, also accompanied the Prime Minister on the metro train.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by top officials and dignitaries.

“Although the inauguration will take place tomorrow (Wednesday), the passenger services will begin at a later date,” the PTI news agency quoted Kaushik Mitra, the Chief Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Railway, as saying.

The inauguration of the landmark project comes less than a year after Kolkata Metro, in April 2023, made history by running a train through the underwater tunnel as part of trials, which was a first in India.

Speaking to India Today TV earlier this week, Kaushik Mitra said that the underwater metro service is “a gift from our Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the people of Kolkata”.

“A long-cherished dream is going to be realised with this inauguration,” he said.

Besides the underwater metro tunnel, the Prime Minister will also inaugurate the Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay and the Taratala-Majerhat Metro sections in Kolkata today.

On Wednesday afternoon, he is scheduled to address a public rally in Barasat, North 24 Parganas district.

On Tuesday evening, shortly after his arrival in Kolkata, Modi went to the Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratishthan where Ramakrishna Math and Mission president Swami Smarananandaji Maharaj is undergoing treatment.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “Upon reaching Kolkata, went to the hospital and enquired about the health of the President of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, Srimat Swami Smaranananda ji Maharaj. We are all praying for his good health and quick recovery.”Prime Minister Modi’s latest visit to West Bengal came two weeks after his last trip to the state during which he addressed public rallies at Arambagh in Hooghly district and Krishnanagar in Nadia.
