‘Haven’t quit’: Himachal Chief Minister tamps down Congress revolt talk

Himachal Pradesh minister and Congress leader Vikramaditya Singh has quit following the party’s stunning loss on the lone Rajya Sabha seat to the BJP. Meanwhile, the BJP has sought a floor test after claiming that the Congress government lost its majority.

  • Himachal Congress minister Vikramaditya Singh resigns, says ‘MLAs ignored’
  • BJP seeks floor test, claims Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu lost mandate

A defiant Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Wednesday rejected speculation that he would step down as Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister as disgruntled Congress legislators threatened a rebellion and the BJP called for a floor test.

“I want to make it clear that I haven’t resigned. The Congress government will complete five years. We are fighters and we will prove our majority,” Sukhu told reporters.

As its troubles deepened, the ruling Congress was dealt another blow by the resignation of powerful minister Vikramaditya Singh. Vikramaditya Singh, son of former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, said the party MLAs’ views “were ignored”.

The political drama in the hill state escalated as 15 BJP MLAs, including Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur, were expelled from the Himachal Pradesh Assembly on Wednesday following their demand for a floor test after the ruling Congress lost the lone Rajya Sabha seat in the hill state.

CRISIS IN HIMACHAL PRADESH AFTER RAJYA SABHA POLLS:

  • Senior BJP leader and Leader of Opposition in the Himachal assembly Jairam Thakur, along with party MLAs, met Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday. They sought a floor test, claiming that Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu had lost the mandate to rule. Speaking to reporters after his meeting with the Governor, Jairam Thakur said, “BJP candidate Harsh Mahajan won the Rajya Sabha elections. Currently, the Congress government has lost the moral right to stay in power.”

After stepping down as minister, Congress leader Vikramaditya Singh said the outcome of the Rajya Sabha polls, in which the ruling Congress lost to the BJP, was a result of the system prevailing in the government since its formation last year. He also stated he was dismayed by the party’s slight to his father, the late Virbhadra Singh.

“Someone who was the Chief Minister of the state for 6 times, due to whom this government was formed in the state – they could not find a small space for his statue on Mall Road. This is the respect this government has shown to my late father,” he said.

  • Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is taking charge of the crisis in Himachal Pradesh. In a briefing to Congress President Kharge, she discussed the state’s situation. She has been in touch with several MLAs, including Vikramaditya Singh who spoke to her yesterday. Gandhi is actively monitoring the developments and maintaining regular contact with Sukhvinder Sukhu and Rajiv Shukla.
  • In a stunning upset for the ruling Congress in Himachal Pradesh, the BJP emerged victorious. The BJP’s Harsh Mahajan defeated Congress’s Abhishek Manu Singhvi in a closely contested battle that ended in a tie, with both candidates securing 34 votes each, indicating significant cross-voting within the Congress ranks.
  • The victory of the BJP candidate, with the support of six Congress lawmakers and three independents previously backing the government, has left Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on shaky ground. The Congress high-command has dispatched senior leaders Bhupinder Singh Hooda and D K Shivakumar to engage with the disgruntled MLAs.
  • The six MLAs had left Shimla for Haryana after casting their votes in the Rajya Sabha polls. On Wednesday, the lawmakers, rumoured to be in touch with the BJP, were being brought back to the Himachal capital by chopper.
  • The BJP secured a decisive victory in Uttar Pradesh, winning all eight Rajya Sabha seats it contested. The opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) suffered a setback, with one of its three nominees facing defeat due to cross-voting by some legislators.
  • Amid concerns over cross-voting and resignations, SP President Akhilesh Yadav warned of strict action for going against the party line. BJP Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya claimed Yadav made a mistake by fielding his third candidate, and he did not have the numbers.
  • Despite the turmoil, the ruling Congress managed to secure three out of four Rajya Sabha seats in Karnataka. Elected members include Ajay Maken, G C Chandrasekhar, and Syed Naseer Hussain, all from the Congress, along with Narayansa K Bhandage of the BJP.Karnataka also witnessed its share of cross-voting chaos – BJP MLA S T Somashekar voted for Ajay Maken, while another legislator abstained.
  • The Rajya Sabha polls in three states on Tuesday witnessed a whirlwind of political drama as cross-voting shaped the outcome – solidifying the BJP’s standing ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, and leaving the opposition INDIA bloc in a more precarious position than before.

Ludhiana : Blind murder; victim’s drug addict friend, his aide arrested

Salem Tabri police solve blind murder case with the arrest of two accused. Victim forced to consume drugs, body found charred and mutilated.

Four days after a mutilated and charred body was recovered, the Salem Tabri police solved the blind murder case with the arrest of two accused on Tuesday.

According to the police, the accused injected a drug in his veins and left the body in a vacant plot in Peeru Banda. The body got charred beyond recognition in a garbage dump fire. A pack of street dogs also feasted on the body for four days before the locals noticed it and informed the police.

The victim was identified as Kamaljit Singh, 27, of Seeda village, who was a farmer. He was not a drug addict, but the accused used to force him to consume drugs for getting money from him. The accused have been identified as Arjun Singh of the same village and Tarun of Salem Tabri. Arjun was a friend of victim Kamaljit Singh.

Salem Tabri police station SHO inspector Harjit Singh said soon after recovering the body, the police made an announcement in the area for the identification of the body. Meanwhile, Jagdeep Singh of Seeda village approached the police stating that his brother Kamaljit Singh has been missing since February 19. He also stated that his brother was last seen with Arjun Singh.

The SHO added that the police rounded up Arjun and his friend Atul, who confessed their crime.

“The accused, who are drug addicts, stated that they wanted Kamaljit Singh to do drugs, as they were eyeing his money. On February 19, they called Kamaljit to meet them and took him to a plot in Peeru Banda. They insisted Kamaljit to take drugs once and took drugs. After sometime, when they gathered consciousness, they found Kamaljit Singh was already dead,” said the SHO.

“Meanwhile, the body caught flames from the smoldering garbage. A pack of dogs ate half of the body before the locals noticed it,” he added.

A case under sections 302, 201 and 34 of the IPC has been lodged against the accused following the complaint of Jagdeep Singh. More information is expected from the accused during questioning.

The mutilated body was recovered on February 23 from the plot.

Himachal Pradesh cross-voting and Uttar Pradesh’s close race in the Rajya Sabha polls!

Himachal Pradesh: Rajya Sabha 2024 Polls: Rajya Sabha MPs are elected by MLAs through the proportional representation process with the single transferable vote (STV) system.

Rajya Sabha Election: The BJP is said to be banking on surplus votes from Ajit Singh’s Rashtriya Lok Dal.

New Delhi: Cross-voting in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party has been reported from Congress-ruled Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, where seven Samajwadi Party MLAs voted for the BJP, in polling for 15 Rajya Sabha seats across three states.

Here are 10 points on this big story

  • In Himachal Pradesh – where the Congress won 40 of 68 seats in the 2022 election and thought it had the support of three independent lawmakers – its candidate, Abhishek Singhvi is on the edge of a shock defeat. The BJP has only 25 MLAs in the hill state, but has benefitted from cross-voting by six Congress leaders and all three independents.
  • The BJP – which forced the Congress into a contest by fielding ex-Congress MLA Harsh Mahajan – is now the favourite to claim a Rajya Sabha seat many felt it could not possibly win. A defeat here for Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu will be a prestige loss.
  • In Uttar Pradesh, SP boss Akhilesh Yadav has said the decision to field a third candidate was a “test”. “Our third seat was actually a test to identify true companions…” he said this morning on X, in a swipe at rebel lawmakers who voted against his candidate.
  • There are 10 Rajya Sabha seats available in UP. The BJP – with 252 seats, as well as 18 from allies – has fielded eight candidates. The SP – which has 108 MLAs – has fielded three. The BJP only has votes to fill seven seats, but is believed to be counting on votes from the Jayant Chaudhary-led Rashtriya Lok Dal to upset its rival’s apple cart.
  • Seven SP lawmakers have cross-voted; this comes after a big shock to Mr Yadav early this morning, when his Chief Whip and four others were seen flashing ‘V-for-victory’ signs with the BJP’s RPN Singh and Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak.
  • The rebellion – Mr Yadav has claimed he sensed the mutiny and will expel the rebels – could not come at a worse time for the Samajwadi Party, which has just sealed a deal with the Congress-led INDIA bloc to contest 63 of UP’s 80 Lok Sabha seats.

Narendra Modi (Politician) Biography

  • Meanwhile, in Karnataka, the other state were voting has been forced, the BJP and its regional ally, the Janata Dal (Secular) faces off against the ruling Congress for four vacant seats. The JDS has fielded the fifth candidate – Kupendra Reddy.
  • The Congress has 134 MLAs, while the BJP has 66 and the JDS 19. The Congress also claims the support of two independent lawmakers. This should give it enough to retain the three seats it had before this round of polling, but the margin is narrow and, with the BJP forcing the issue by fielding a fifth option, preferential voting comes into play.
  • Apart from these, 41 seats have been filled unopposed. The list of new MPs includes former Congress boss Sonia Gandhi, BJP boss JP Nadda, and union ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and L Murugan, as well as ex-Congressman Ashok Chavan, now with the BJP.
  • Rajya Sabha MPs are elected by MLAs through the proportional representation process with the single transferable vote (STV) system. The MLAs have to list all candidates in order of preference. A candidate with the required number of first-choice votes is elected. If the threshold is not reached, the votes are transferred to the second, the third, so on.

Delhi Excise policy case: ED issues 8th summons to Arvind Kejriwal, CM asked to appear on March 4!

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal skipped the seventh summons on Monday, saying he would appear before the agency if a court ordered him to do so.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) summoned Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal yet again for questioning in the Delhi Excise policy ‘scam’. The Chief Minister has been asked to appear before the probe agency on March 4. This is for the eight time that Kejriwal has been summoned by the ED in connection with the money laundering case linked to the excise policy “scam”.

Kejriwal, 55, skipped the seventh summons on Monday, saying he would appear before the agency if a court ordered him to do so. Kejriwal alleged that the summons was a tool to pressure him into leaving the INDIA block.

The ED had recently filed a fresh complaint before a Delhi court against Kejriwal for disobeying its summons in this case. A Delhi court then directed the chief minister to appear before the court on March 16.

In a statement, the AAP said the probe agency should wait for its order instead of sending summonses repeatedly.

However, while issuing the eighth summons, the Enforcement Directorate rejected the contention that a fresh notice for Kejriwal’s attendance was wrong as the matter was sub-judice, news agency PTI reported.

On February 14,  the ED had issued a sixth summons to the Delhi Chief Minister in the money laundering probe related to alleged irregularities in the Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22 case, asking him to join the investigation on February 19.

The fresh summons to the Delhi Chief Minister were issued after he skipped the fifth summons on February 2.

Arvind Kejriwal had earlier skipped five previous summons issued by the ED on February 2, January 18, January 3, November 2 and December 22, calling them “illegal and politically motivated. He had also written to the ED seeking their withdrawal.

Kejriwal’s name has been mentioned multiple times in chargesheets filed by the ED in the case. The agency said that the accused were in touch with him regarding the preparation of the now-scrapped Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22. The ED had claimed in its chargesheet that the AAP used “proceeds of crime” to the tune of about ₹45 crore in its Goa election campaign.

It is alleged that the Delhi government’s excise policy for 2021-22 to grant licences to liquor traders allowed cartelisation and favoured certain dealers who had allegedly paid bribes for it, a charge repeatedly refuted by the AAP.

AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh, and communications in-charge of the party Vijay Nair have been arrested in this case by the ED till now.

Big setback for BJP as its Karnataka MLA cross-votes for Congress in Rajya Sabha elections

Doddanagouda G. Patil said the party will take action against the MLA.

Rajya Sabha elections

Bengaluru: Karnataka MLA ST Somashekar has cross-voted in the Rajya Sabha elections in favour of the Congress, said BJP chief whip Doddanagouda G. Patil on Tuesday. Voting for four seats from the state for the Upper House of the Parliament took place today.

BJP chief whip Doddanagouda G. Patil said the party will take action against the MLA.

It is confirmed that ST Somashekar has cross-voted. We are discussing what can be done and what action to be taken,” he said. ST Somashekar, before casting his vote, made a cryptic remark.

“I will vote in favour of those who assure me and give confidence that they will give funds for the water and other management in my constituency,” he said. The BJP put a brave face after Somashekhar’s decision.

BJP MLA Basanagouda R Patil (Yatnal) said: “Sometimes such things happen. The party had given clear direction to vote for BJP-JD(S) candidates.”

Reacting to the reports, Congress MLA Dinesh Gundu Rao said: “We all are intact. For the BJP, it has become a practice to use any method to win.”

Five candidates — Ajay Maken, Syed Naseer Hussain and G C Chandrasekhar (all Congress), Narayansa Bandage (BJP) and Kupendra Reddy (JD(S)) — are in the fray.

Three Congress and one BJP MP are retiring in Karnataka. It is expected that the BJP will again win just one seat in the Congress-ruled state.

Each Rajya Sabha candidate needs at least 45 votes in the 224-MLA Karnataka Assembly to win a Rajya Sabha seat from the state. With 135 MLAs, the Congress has the exact number to elect its three candidates – Ajay Maken, Nasir Hussain and G C Chandrashekhar.

The BJP has 66 MLAs, which means it can easily get its main candidate, party worker Narayansa Bhandage, elected.

In Uttar Pradesh, many Samajwadi Party MLAs have reportedly cross-voted for the Bharatiya Janata Party.

UK-based gangster likely involved in Haryana politician’s Nafe Singh Rathee murder: Cops

The Haryana Police, investigating the murder of Nafe Singh Rathee, has said a UK-based gangster was suspected to be involved in the case.

In Short

  • UK-based gangster likely involved in killing of Nafe Singh Rathee
  • Police to interrogate gangster’s associate in Tihar Jail
  • FIR names former MLA and others, also mentions five unnamed accused

A UK-based gangster was likely involved in the killing of Nafe Singh Rathee, Haryana unit president of Indian National Lok Dal and former MLA, the Haryana Police has said.

The police also said they would interrogate a close associate of the gangster, lodged in Delhi’s Tihar Jail, in connection with the case. Earlier, the police interrogated Sandeep, alias Kala Jathedi, one of the top gangsters in Haryana, in Tihar Jail.

During interrogations, Sandeep denied any involvement in Singh’s murder.

Rathee and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) worker Jai Kishan were killed when unidentified assailants sprayed their sports utility vehicle (SUV) with bullets at Bahadurgarh, near Delhi, on Sunday. The assailants who shot dead Rathee in his SUV told his nephew, who was driving the vehicle, that they were sparing his life so that he could inform his family, according to an FIR.

In the FIR, the police named former MLA Naresh Kaushik, Karambir Rathee, Ramesh Rathee, Satish Rathee, Gaurav Rathee, Rahul and Kamal.

The FIR also mentioned five unnamed accused.

Meanwhile, in his police complaint, Rathee’s nephew Rakesh said five unidentified killers, who were following them in a car, came out and fired indiscriminately near the Barahi railway crossing. Complainant Rakesh told police that he was behind the wheel and Rathee was sitting next to him. In the rear seat, two persons, including the INLD worker killed in the incident, were sitting.

Rakesh said they were returning to Bahadurgarh on Sunday evening.

The attack, which came less than two months before the Lok Sabha polls, drew sharp reactions from the opposition parties in the BJP-ruled state.

On Monday, Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij said the probe into Rathee’s killing will be handed over to the CBI even as 12 people, including a former MLA, were booked in connection with the murder.

The statement came as Vij, in the Haryana Assembly, denied the Opposition’s charge that the law-and-order mechanism has collapsed in the state.
