Sushil Kumar Modi, Bihar Former Deputy Chief Minister, Passes Away at 72

Reacting to Sushil Modi’s Modi, 72, was suffering from cancer, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar and others expressed their deep grief

On Monday, Sushil Modi, the former Bihar deputy chief minister, passed away from renal cancer. He was seventy-two years old.

The All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) has confirmed that the BJP leader departed around 9:45 p.m.

In April, Modi said that he was sick and requested that the party relieve him of any duties related to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

“I have been battling with cancer for the last six months,” he had stated in a message on the social media platform X, written in Hindi. I believe the timing is right to release it to the public. During the Lok Sabha elections, I would be unable to complete my duties. I’ve informed the PM about this. My appreciation to my party, Bihar, and the nation.”

“Heartfelt tribute to our dear friend, former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar and former Rajya Sabha MP Shri Sushil Kumar Modi ji on his demise,” former chief minister of Bihar Jitan Ram Manjhi said on social networking site X, expressing his condolences for Modi’s passing.

Modi had served as Bihar Deputy Chief Minister for over 11 years across two stints — the first from November 2005 to June 2013, and then from July 2017 to December 2020 — stitching up a formidable combination with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar of the JD(U).

In his three-decade career, he was also an MLA, an MLC, a member of the Lok Sabha, and a Rajya Sabha MP. He emerged from the 1974 JP Movement, along with the likes of Lalu and Nitish, and was known to be the most influential BJP leader since Bihar BJP’s founder Kailashpati Mishra.

In Mumbai, a Hoarding Collapse Incident Resulted in 9 Deaths and 70 Injuries.

Mumbai Hoarding Collapse: As of early Tuesday morning, 74 people were injured and 14 people had died as a result of the hoarding collapse in Ghatkopar, Mumbai.

Mumbai hoarding collapse: The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) conducted nighttime rescue operations for individuals trapped after a big hoarding fell in the early hours of Tuesday, resulting in 14 fatalities. The event has left at least 74 people injured.

Eight bodies have already been found, according to NDRF inspector Gaurav Chauhan, who spoke with news agency AFP. This happened after excavators combed through the debris to find people who were trapped behind the fallen billboard. He said there were still four bodies buried beneath the debris.

“We’ve found them, but this petrol pump prevents us from removing them, and things could get dangerous,” he stated.

In the meantime, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar and President Droupadi Murmu expressed their sympathies for the victims of the hoarding fall and wished for a swift recovery for those injured. The tragedy occurred in Ghatkopar, Mumbai.

Mumbai hoarding collapse: Top updates

  • A 70-metre billboard collapsed in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar on Monday after the city was hit by heavy rain and thunderstorms. The illegal hoarding fell on a petrol pump in Ghatkopar’s Cheddanagar Junction.
  • Rescue operations commenced on Monday evening, with 64 people admitted to the hospital. The NDRF conducted overnight rescue operations with excavators digging through the wreckage to retrieve the bodies still trapped in the rubble.
  • The BMC said, in a statement, on Monday evening that 20 to 30 people were still trapped inside the rubble from the hoarding collapse. However, the NDRF was facing issues in removing the rubble due to the collapse that occurred at a petrol pump, which could lead to a hazardous situation.
  • Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde reached the spot of the incident on Monday to take stock of the situation. He also announced an ex gratia of ₹5 lakh for the families of the deceased, as well as treatment for those injured.
  • The BMC said the billboard was put up illegally, with no prior permissions taken from the corporation. Mumbai police have registered a case under IPC 304, 338, 337, and 34 against owner Bhavesh Bhide and others at Pantnagar police station.
  • Condoling the loss of life, President Murmu posted on X, “The news of several casualties due to the collapse of a hoarding in Ghatkopar area of Mumbai is extremely sad. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured and wish for the success of the relief and rescue operations.”

Mumbai witnessed the first rains of the season on Monday afternoon as heavy rains accompanied by an intense sandstorm made their way into the city. The residents of the city, who had been facing scorching heat over the past few days, seemed happy with the change in weather. The internet is filled with visuals of sand storms and rain, and the commercial capital of India can be seen in a very dystopian look.

Mumbai, Thane and other adjoining areas of Maharashtra received rains on Monday, and the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has also forecasted lightning & gusty winds (30-40kmph) at isolated places. The regional weather centre has issued a ‘Yellow’ alert for regions like Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts.

The weather department has also issued an ‘Orange’ alert for several other districts of Maharashtra, including Pune, Satara, Sangli, Nashik, Kolhapur, Ahmednagar, Aurangabad, Jalna and Parbhani districts. “Possibility of light rain/thundershower in evening/night over the next 24 hours. Maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 35°C and 28°C respectively,” the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) said in a post on X.

The strong winds also uprooted some trees in several areas of Mumbai, causing traffic snarls. No one was injured in the incidents, and the administration is rerouting traffic from vulnerable areas to avoid any untoward incidents.

The change in weather has impacted flight operations at Mumbai International Airport, where takeoff and landing were suspended for 30 minutes, according to a report by the news platform NDTV. The suspension of flight operations came amid a forecast of hail and gusty winds (50-60 kph) and heavy rain in some districts of Maharashtra on Monday.

The rain forecast in several regions of India will relieve the country’s intense heatwave of the past few weeks. This year, anticyclonic conditions and El Nino effects have contributed to record-high temperatures in several states.

At nine in the morning, the police received two calls, sources told. The caller, who went by the name Swati Maliwal, said that the Chief Minister’s PA, Bibhav, had attacked her.

The Delhi Police received two calls said to be from AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal, India Today reported on Monday. The caller claimed she was assaulted by Arvind Kejriwal’s PA at the chief minister’s official residence. 

The police received two calls this morning at 9 am, sources told India Today. The caller identified herself as Swati Maliwal and claimed assault by the Chief Minister’s PA Bibhav. Whether she was assaulted or not can be confirmed only if she files a complaint. So far, there has been no comment from either the AAP or Maliwal.

The police received the calls from the number that Maliwal uses. Acting upon the calls, the police reached the chief minister’s residence but Maliwal was not there. Sources also say Maliwal may reach the Civil Lines police station to file a complaint. 

According to protocol, the Delhi Police cannot enter the Chief Minister’s house without permission. The police are currently investigating the authenticity of the PCR calls and attempting to gather more information about the matter. No written complaint has been filed yet.

India Today TV reached out to Swati Maliwal for her statement, but she was not available.

Voting was held on 115 seats on 23 April. 67 seats were won by BJP, 19 by Congress and 29 by others. Of the 71 seats that went to polls on April 29, 49 went to BJP, 2 to Congress and 20 to others.

The Last Phase Of Voting

Voting took place on 51 seats on May 6, out of which 42 went to BJP, 1 to Congress, and 8 to others. Voting was held on 59 seats on May 12, out of which 45 seats were won by BJP, 1 by Congress, and 13 by others. A total of 59 seats were to be decided in the last phase of voting on May 19. Of these, BJP had got 31. 8 were won by Congress and 20 by others.

AP Elections 2024 According to an Election Commission app, Andhra Pradesh saw 9.05 percent of voters come out for the 25 Lok Sabha seats and 9.21 percent for the 175-seat Assembly as of 9 a.m. on Monday.
In the state, polling is set to take place from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., except a few locations where it will end an hour or two early.

Visakhapatnam records 20.47% voting till 11 a.m.

Visakhapatnam records 20.47% voting in the first four hours (7 a.m. to 11 a.m.). 

There was an increase in 10% voting in the last two hours. The west constituency recorded the highest 25.02% voting, followed by the East constituency with 23.01% voting. 

Similarly, Gajuwaka and Bheemunipatnam recorded 21.65% and 21.80% respectively. Voting in South constituency which recorded just around 4% by 9 a.m. has significantly improved to 17.22% by 11 a.m.

The YSRCP is contesting in all 175 Assembly seats and 25 Lok Sabha segments in the state.

As part of a seat-sharing deal among NDA partners, the TDP was allocated 144 Assembly and 17 Lok Sabha constituencies while the BJP is contesting from six Lok Sabha and 10 Assembly seats.

The actor Pawan Kalyan-led Janasena is contesting two Lok Sabha and 21 Assembly seats.

Percentage of voting till 9 a.m.

As per the figures, 9.5% of voting was recorded in the Visakhapatnam district. 10.25% of voting was recorded in the Anakapalli district and 10% of voting was recorded in the Alluri district.

Today, May 13, is the polling day for phase 4 of the Lok Sabha Elections, which takes place in 96 seats spread over nine states and one union territory.

Elections are scheduled for today for all 25 seats in Andhra Pradesh, 17 seats in Telangana, 13 seats in Uttar Pradesh, 11 seats in Maharashtra, 8 seats in each of West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh, 5 seats in Bihar, 4 seats in each of Jharkhand and Odisha, and 1 seat in Jammu and Kashmir.

More than half of the 543 Lok Sabha Elections 2024 seats, or 283 constituencies, have already been voted in three stages on April 19, 26, and May 7. The voter participation for the 93 seats in the third phase of polling, which took place on May 7, was 65.68 percent, which is roughly 1.32 percentage points lower than the turnout for the same seats in the Lok Sabha elections of 2019.

The dates of the final three stages are set for May 20, May 25, and June 1. On June 4, the votes from all seven stages of the Lok Sabha Elections will be tallied.

BJP had won 42, Congress 6 seats in 2019

Of the 96 seats voting in the third phase today, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 42 in 2019 and 38 in the 2014 general elections. The BJP allies, TDP, JD-U, and LJP, had won five of these seats in 2019. The TDP won three seats and JD-U and LJP won one seat each in 2019. 

Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen had won two of these seats in 2019. The YSR Congress party (YSRCP) won 22 seats in 2019 and 9 seats among the 96 in 2014. Similarly, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) won 9 seats in 2019 and 11 seats in the 2014 elections. 

The 25 Lok Sabha seats in Andhra Pradesh and the 17 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana comprise the YSCRP and BRS performance. Today is the fourth phase of voting for these states’ 42 Lok Sabha seats.

Three seats were won by the Congress party in 2014 and six of the 96 seats in the Lok Sabha in 2019. In today’s third phase of voting, the Congress had secured 50 out of the 96 seats in 2009.

Aiming for a record-breaking third term under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP-led NDA has set a goal of gaining 400 seats in this election. The Congress-led opposition parties, united under the INDIA bloc banner, pose a threat to the ruling coalition.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been granted provisional bail by the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court of Delhi has granted temporary bail to New Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the case of his suspected intoxication. This bail is valid through June 1. Abhishek Singhvi, the attorney for Arvind Kejriwal, had requested that bail be granted before June 4. But Kejriwal was given temporary release by the court until June 1st, provided that the campaign finishes 48 hours beforehand. Another restriction placed on Arvind Kejriwal is that he is not allowed to discuss the subject with supporters. In the meantime, polls are scheduled on May 25 in Punjab and June 1 in Delhi.

When will Arvind Kejriwal come out of jail?

After the Supreme Court granted interim bail to Arvind Kejriwal, the court order will be sent to the trial court. After that, the order of release from the trial court will be sent to the Tihar Jail administration. Arvind Kejriwal will be released after due process is completed by the Tihar Jail administration. All release orders received daily in Tihar Jail are processed in about 1 hour. In such a situation, there is a possibility that Arvind Kejriwal will be released from jail today.

ED arrested Arvind Kejriwal on March 21. ED officials raided Kejriwal’s house. Kejriwal was arrested by the ED officials after a few hours of interrogation. At that time, Aam Aadmi Party workers took to the streets and staged aggressive protests. In the interim, Kejriwal had tried to get bail. However, they were not successful. But now, Arvind Kejriwal will be out of jail ahead of the Delhi Lok Sabha elections as the Supreme Court has granted him interim bail. This is considered a big relief for Aam Aadmi Party.

ED opposes Kejriwal’s bail

The Delhi Chief Minister had filed a petition in the court seeking interim bail for the Lok Sabha election campaign. Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on March 21 in the Delhi liquor policy case. It was said that Kejriwal, who is in ED custody, should get bail to participate in the election campaign. However, the investigating agency had already opposed granting bail to the AAP chief. It said that giving bail to Kejriwal would send the wrong message. He cannot be treated as a special person. However, a bench of Justice Sanjeev Khanna and Justice Dipankar Dutta granted bail to Kejriwal after hearing the arguments.
