Yuvraj Singh has said that he would have given Rohit Sharma one more season as the captain of the Mumbai Indians. Yuvraj said he would have brought in Hardik Pandya as the vice-captain of the side.
In Short
- Hardik replaced Rohit as MI skipper before the start of IPL 2024
- Yuvraj feels it was a big decision made by MI to replace Rohit
- Rohit will be leading India during the T20 World Cup 2024
Legendary all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has said that he would have given Rohit Sharma one more year as captain of the Mumbai Indians and allowed Hardik Pandya to be his deputy during IPL 2024.
MI made the bold call to make Hardik the captain after being traded in from Gujarat Titans, which initially received a lot of backlash from the fans.
The decision has split the cricketing world with fans and critics voicing their opinions over the past few months. Yuvraj, while talking on Star Sports, felt that removing Rohit as skipper is a big decision and he would have let Hardik work as the vice-captain to see how the franchise functions.
“Rohit Sharma is a 5-time IPL winner as a captain. Removing him is a big decision. I would have gotten someone in, like they brought Hardik (Pandya), but I still would have given Rohit one more season and let Hardik be the vice captain and see how the whole franchise works,” said Yuvraj Singh.
Yuvraj went on to say he understood why MI decided to go down this path as they wanted to look towards the future of the franchise.
“I understand from the franchise’s point of view, they have to see the future of the franchise. But then again, Rohit is captaining India and still playing well, so it’s a big decision,” said Yuvraj.
Yuvraj went on to say that while Hardik does have great talent, managing a franchise like MI would be different from his time with Gujarat Titans. The former all-rounder feels that the expectations will be high when it comes to the five-time IPL Champions.
“In terms of talent, yes, he has great talent. Being captain of Gujarat will be different from being captain of Mumbai. Expectations are a lot. Mumbai Indians have been a big side,” said Yuvraj.
Despite not being the skipper for MI this year, Rohit will be leading the Indian team during the T20 World Cup 2024 in the Caribbean and the US.
