DAV College hailed from Hisar in Haryana

A BSc final-year student of DAV College was found dead in her hostel room in Chandigarh’s Sector 10 on Tuesday in what the police said appears to be a case of suicide.

The deceased woman has been identified as Sakshi, 22, a resident of Hisar district in Haryana. Officers said the incident came to light around 12.30 pm.

According to sources, Sakshi’s friends had been trying to reach her since morning, but there was no response. On going to her locked room, they saw her body through the window. An alert was raised and the warden and security guards rushed to the spot, and forced the door open. Unfortunately, the student was already dead. No suicide note was found, they added.

A friend of the deceased said, “Sakshi seemed fine until last night. She was known for her joyful personality. Be it lunchtime or dinner, she used to call her friends loudly and ask them to come and take their food in the hostel mess.”

College Principal Rita Jain was unavailable for comment. Jashanpreet Singh, president of DAV College students’ union, expressed condolences over the “unfortunate incident” and said the student union stands with the deceased’s family.

The police said the student’s body has been kept in the mortuary of Government Multi Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, awaiting the arrival of her family members. The post-mortem will conducted on Wednesday. Inquest proceedings have been initiated at the Sector 3 police station, the officer added.
