Joe Root DRS row: HawkEye founder plays down chatter around Ranchi Test decision

India vs England, 4th Test: Founder of HawkEye technology, Paul Hawkins, said the right decision was made with regards to Joe Root’s LBW call in the 2nd innings in Ranchi while condeding that there is scope for improvement in the ball-tracking technology.

In Short

  • Joe Root was given out LBW after on-field umpire’s call was overturned in Ranchi
  • Quite a few were not convinced that the ball pitched on line from visuals of the ball-tracking system
  • England lost the 4th Test by 5 wickets after a dramatic 2nd innings collapse

Paul Hawkins, the founder of the HawkEye technology that is used for ball-tracking in Decision Review System in Cricket, played down the chatter around Joe Root’s LBW in the second innings of the recently-concluded Test match between India and England in Ranchi. Hawkins said that he did not doubt that the correct decision was made by third umpire Joel Wilson in overturning on-field umpire Kumar Dharmasena’s call.

Paul Hawkins explained the difference between the usage of HawkEye technology in tennis and cricket and said the reaction to Joe Root’s LBW call offers them a scope to learn and improve the visual aspect of ball-tracking system.

It all began in the 17th over of England’s second innings in Ranchi when Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin trapped Joe Root lbw. The on-field umpire’s initial decision was not out, believing the ball had pitched outside leg stump. However, India’s successful review turned the tide, with the ball-tracking system showing the ball had fractionally pitched inside the line of the stumps, leading to Root’s dismissal for 11.

“So firstly, you measure the width of the stumps on each day of the Test. That then becomes the lines between what’s pitched in line and what’s not. It was a very close-on (Joe Root call),” Hawkinds told Simon Hughes in the ‘The Analyst’ podcast.

The controversy erupted, days after Ben Stokes expressed his displeasure with the umpire’s call after a Zak Crawley dismissal in the 3rd Test.

“In tennis, you will occasionally get zero mm in or zero mm out (in terms of ball pitching outside the line). But in tennis, it’s decided that itn’s not out until it’s not zero mm, but it’s 1mm out. So in tennis, we shift the bounce mark just for the presentation perspective, so a zero mm in becomes a 1mm in to enable the viewers to see the mark.

“But that’s just a presentation thing, nothing different with the tracking or the answer. It just makes it clearer to the viewer.

“It would have been clearer on TV if the track hadn’t come off the ball, so you can see more clearly over the line, which happens automatically if the ball has pitched outside the leg stump.

“It must be 1mm more in than out (Joe Root case) because otherwise, we wouldn’t have said it’s pitched in line. But it is a very close one.
As per the laws, we gave the right answer. But we failed in the ability to not be the story and perhaps there’s a learning opportunity to improve our presentation and stuff to make those really close ones slightly clearer,” he added.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan and fast-bowler Steve Harmison voiced their disbelief, suggesting that the ball might have pitched outside the line of the leg-stump. Vaughan, in a now-deleted post, criticised the technology’s reliability, reflecting a broader sentiment of incredulity that resonated through the English cricket community.

The fallout from this incident was not just a matter of one wicket but spoke to larger concerns about technology’s role in cricket. As England crumbled to 145 all out, the lbw call became a focal point of discussions, with the English media dissecting every angle and projection offered by the DRS.

Former India opener Kris Srikkanth has criticized England’s Bazball approach, saying that it won’t work if they fail to adapt to the conditions in India. Srikkanth, known for his fearless approach to batting, ruled out any chances of England fighting back in the series even as the touring side remained defiant after the humbling loss in the 3rd Test in Rajkot. The Bazball era dealt England their most crushing blow as they suffered a 434-run defeat in the 3rd Test.

Srikkanth said England lack the talent to challenge India in Indian conditions, pointing fingers at the inexperienced spin-bowling attack.

“I doubt the practical success of promoting Bazball and similar theories. Have these strategies proven effective, especially in the Ashes? To be honest, no tactic can succeed if the team continues to perform poorly. The hype surrounding the Bazball theory seems unwarranted, as it requires the skill to bat effectively in specific conditions. Additionally, successful bowling demands genuine talent,” he said on his YouTube show ‘Cheeky Cheeka’.

England stunned India in the first Test of the ongoing 5-match series in Hyderabad, but the tourists have lost steam, losing the second and third Tests by huge margins. The Rajkot Test defeat, by a record margin of 434 runs, doused the hype around Bazball with even former England cricketers taking a swipe at the popular approach that brought England plenty of success before they arrived in India.

“If feasible, they could take the next available flight back home. However, they are obligated to participate in the remaining two Tests,” he jokingly said when asked about England’s chances of fighting back in the series.

Kris Srikkanth added that England need to look at adapting to situations and not remain bullish about their style of play if they are to recover from the Rajkot Test hammering.

“Yes, their batting performance in the first innings was commendable. Ollie Pope delivered an exceptional innings, and I acknowledge England’s credit for that. However, I doubt the sustainability of the Bazball approach in the long term. Simply going out and attempting to hit every ball may work for players like Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes, but not everyone can execute that style successfully,” he added.

With Ben Stokes remaining defiant about their chances to win the series, the two teams will meet in the 4th Test in Ranchi from Friday.

England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and chose to bat first at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Thursday. In a surprising move, England decided to include three spinners in their lineup. On the other hand, India, led by Rohit Sharma, stuck with their tried and tested combination.

This match marks the first time the two teams have met in India since 2021, when the hosts made a remarkable comeback after losing the first Test in Chennai, ultimately winning the series 3-1. Axar Patel, who made his debut in that series, impressed everyone by taking 27 wickets in just three Tests.

While India will be without the services of Virat Kohli for the first two Test matches, England will also be missing 19-year-old Shoaib Bashir, who only received his visa on Wednesday and is expected to join the team over the weekend.

India vs England Live Score: ENG opt to bat

Ben Stokes: We are gonna have a bat. It’s typical conditions in India, you are not quite sure what you are going to get. We will try to post a big score on the board. The preparation has been really good. We know the challenge that India presents, not only to us but every team that comes here. They are an incredibly successful side. We have got Hartley making his debut, Rehan is playing his second Test, but they have got a great leader in Jack Leach to lead them. I have got full confidence in everyone. We picked a XI that we thought is going to give us the best chance of winning. Woody is that X-factor bowler.

Rohit Sharma: We would have batted as well. Looks dry. Whether we bowl or bat first, we have the skills and we got the guys to do the job for us. Hopefully we can turn out well. A good series, I am playing for the first time – five Test matches. The guys are excited. It’ll be challenging but we are up for it. We have played in these conditions before. We know what to expect and what we need to do, it’s all about executing your skills, backing yourself and being brave enough to take the opportunity. We’ve got three spinners and two seamers – Bumrah, Siraj, Axar, Ashwin and Jadeja. It was a tough one (to leave out Kuldeep Yadav), we thought a lot about it. Axar, whenever he had played, he has done well and bats really well in these conditions. He got some really good score the last time we played against Australia. Probably the reason we went with Axar.
