Sambit Patra ‘Slip of Tongue’ on Lord Jagannath by BJP causes Controversy, says PM Modi.

The viral clip features Sambit Patra speaking to a private Odia channel where he can be heard saying that Lord Jagannath is PM Modi’s “bhakt” (devotee). The BJP leader later apologised, calling his remark a “slip of tongue”.

  • Naveen Patnaik and Arvind Kejriwal condemn Patra’s remark
  • Congress demands an apology from PM Modi

Sambit Patra, a BJP leader and the party’s candidate for the Puri Lok Sabha constituency, intentionally stirred up controversy when a careless comment he made about Lord Jagannath and Prime Minister Narendra Modi went viral.

In the widely shared video, Patra is heard declaring that Lord Jagannath is PM Modi’s bhakt (devotee) while speaking to a private Odia station.

“Mahaprabhu Shree Jagannatha is the Lord of Universe,” declared Naveen Patnaik, the chief minister of Odisha and the leader of the ruling Biju Janata Dal, in response to the film. It is an affront to the Lord to refer to Mahaprabhu as a follower of another person. Across the world, this has offended and denigrated the beliefs of millions of Odias and Jagannatha bhaktas.”

Calling Lord Jagannath the greatest symbol of Odia asmita (pride), Patnaik denounced Patra’s statement.

“By this you have deeply hurt Odia Asmita and this will be remembered and condemned by the people of Odisha for a very long time,” he said.

Later, Sambit Patra clarified his remarks, emphasising that it was a slip of tongue.

Replying to Naveen Patnaik’s post on X, Sambit Patra wrote, “Naveen Ji Namaskar! I gave number of bytes today to multiple media channels after the massive success of Shri Narendra Modiji’s Road Show in Puri today, everywhere I mentioned that Modi ji is an ardent “Bhakt” of Shri Jagannath Mahaprabhu. By mistake during one of the bytes I pronounced just the opposite. I know you too know and understand this.”

“Sir, let’s not make an issue out of a nonexistent issue. We all have ‘slip of tongue’ sometimes. Thanks and Pranam,” he added.

In a video on X, Patra said he would fast for three days to repent for his mistake.

“Today, I am deeply troubled by the mistake I have made regarding Mahaprabhu Shri Jagannath Ji,” a rough translation of Patra’s post in Hindi read.

“I bow down at the feet of Mahaprabhu Sri Jagannath Ji and beg for forgiveness. I will be fasting for the next three days to correct my mistake and repent,” he added.

Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal also criticised Patra, calling his remark an “insult to God”.

“I strongly condemn this statement of BJP. They have started thinking that they are above God. This is height of arrogance. Calling God bhakt of Modi ji is an insult to God,” he said.

The Congress also hit out at the BJP over Patra’s remark. “BJP leader Sambit Patra says that Mahaprabhu Lord Shri Jagannath is a devotee of Narendra Modi. This is a grave insult to Mahaprabhu. This statement has hurt the faith of crores of devotees. Sambit Patra, who is immersed in Modi Bhakti, should not have committed this sin. Narendra Modi himself should apologize for this disgusting statement,” a post on party’s X handle read.

Kapil Sibal calls Amit Shah’s Bail Statement to Kejriwal “Objectionable.”

Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal on Thursday hit out at Home Minister Amit Shah over his reported “special treatment” remarks on the interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, saying it was an “objectionable statement” that questioned the intention of the Supreme Court judges.

Sibal’s remarks came after Shah while referring to the interim bail granted by the Supreme Court to Kejriwal, reportedly said many in the country believed he was given special treatment.

The Supreme Court on Thursday steered clear of the political talk about it has made an exception for Kejriwal in granting him interim bail for campaigning in the Lok Sabha polls but said: “critical analysis of the judgment is welcome”.

Addressing a press conference in the national capital, Sibal said, “Shah has made an objectionable statement and questioned the intention of the Supreme Court judges.”
Shah has stated very cleverly that many people are saying the Supreme Court’s decision to grant interim bail to Kejriwal in the excise policy case is akin to him getting special treatment, he added.

“He (Shah) has said ‘people are saying’. If people are saying and you don’t believe in it, then why say it? If people say and you believe it, then only you have made the statement,” said Sibal, who is also a senior advocate.

Sibal said it is important to spell out the laws in light of the statement.

“If someone is convicted but gets a stay from the court, he or she can file a nomination and get elected. If there is a charge sheet against anyone, a person can campaign and also file a nomination, like Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh is doing,” the Rajya Sabha MP said.

“One who just has allegations against him cannot campaign, what kind of a statement is this?” Sibal said, hitting out at Shah.

He probably does not know the law, otherwise he would not have made the statement, Sibal said.

Slamming Shah, Sibal said, “He (Shah) says ‘if we win 400 seats, we will take back PoK’. What if you don’t get that many seats, won’t you take back PoK? We want you to take it back. Firstly, you should take back those 4,000 kilometers that China has taken away…”
Asked about the alleged assault on AAP MP Swati Maliwal at Kejriwal’s residence, Sibal said, “Why is he (Shah) worried about this (Maliwal assault case)? It’s an internal matter of AAP. You think about Prajwal (Revanna), why don’t you give statements on that? That is the internal matter of JD(S), you are silent there and the prime minister is also silent.

BJP new candidate: Meet Ujjwal Nikam, Poonam Mahajan’s replacement for the Lok Sabha elections in 2024.

Meet Ujjwal Nikam, the New BJP Candidate: Who Took Poonam Mahajan’s Place. 2024 Lok Sabha Elections: Poonam Mahajan, the BJP’s candidate for Mumbai North Central in Maharashtra, has been eliminated, and Ujjwal Deorao Nikam, a seasoned attorney, has taken her place. BJP releases its fifteenth candidate list. Senior public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam has represented the government in several well-known cases, including the 26/11 Mumbai attack case. The Padmashree recipient was involved in several high-profile cases over his lengthy and distinguished legal career, such as the 1993 Bombay bombings, the Gulshan Kumar murder case, and the murder of Poonam’s father and BJP politician Pramod Mahajan. He will take on Varsha Gaikwad, the Maharashtrian MLA for Dharavi and the head of the Congress city unit. “The government took a firm stand that terror and talks (with Pakistan) will not happen at the same time. The success achieved by PM Modi-led government in defeating the anti-national elements, including in the Kashmir Valley by empowering the army, is unique,” said Nikam on Sunday.

“In the last 10 years, incidents of terror attacks and bomb blasts have been largely kept under check. However, if you recall the phase before that, Pakistan had created a sense of fear in the minds of Indians by carrying out terrorist attacks in the country, including Mumbai. The number of sleeper cells in the country was also increasing. The political system used to kneel before the separatists instead of taking a firm stand against Pakistan,” Nikam, the man behind the execution of Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab involved in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, added. Responding to the sex controversy row, Amit Shah said, “I Want To Ask Priyanka Gandhi…”

The prominent lawyer praised the current government for reacting strongly after the Pulwama and Uri terror attacks.

Instead of taking a strong stance against Pakistan, the political Ujjwal Nikam establishment used to bow down to the separatists,” said Nikam, the man who oversaw the execution of Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab, who was responsible for the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

The well-known attorney commended the present administration for responding forcefully to the terror strikes in Pulwama and Uri.

“The government led by Prime Minister Modi launched airstrikes and surgical operations against Pakistan. Economic progress and national security are two sides of the same coin. India’s economic expansion is celebrated globally these days, he remarked, whereas Pakistan has descended into poverty.

He also credited PM Modi-led government for “tremendous improvement” in India’s relations with the Islamic countries.

“All eight ex-Navy officers from India sentenced by Qatar were released safely due to India’s proactive diplomacy. By abrogating Article 370, this government sped up the development of Kashmir. Be it the cries of Khalistan emerging in Punjab, the challenge posed by China on border areas or the befitting reply given to Pakistan, today the country is living a happy and peaceful life under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Nikam said.

Trump will move back and forth between the trial and the trail.

The BJP nominee for the Mumbai North Central LS seat mentioned that the 1993 Mumbai bomb blast case was the turning point in his career as a lawyer.

“After that case, be it the 2006 serial bomb blasts in Mumbai or the horrific terror attack of 26/11, I have fought various cases and used all judicial tools. I have made sincere efforts to ensure that the culprits involved in these cases get the strictest punishment. I am justifiably proud that we succeeded in punishing a terrorist like Ajmal Kasab, who came to attack India’s sovereignty,” Nikam said.

“While fighting these cases, I felt the shortcomings and weaknesses of the then political system,” he said.

He acknowledged that the announcement of his nomination may have raised many eyebrows.

According to Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj, Raghav Chadha may have “lost eyesight” about AAP MP.

“Politics is not my domain. I have spent all my career in the legal profession. Still, I was often asked about joining politics. During the last election, I was strongly urged to be a candidate by the senior leaders of the state but I politely refused. No doubt they will be the first ones to be shocked by my decision now,” he said.

On the opposition criticizing him as an “outsider” – as he was born in Jalgaon but is now contesting from a Mumbai LS seat — Nikam said though Jalgaon is his birthplace, Mumbai is his place of work.

Virendra Sachdeva says the AAP has entirely lost contact with the public.

” … the victims of the terror attack cases for whom I fought were from Mumbai. A person who resolves to work for the national interest is never restricted by geographical boundaries. Hence, to be criticized as an ‘outsider’ means that the rival candidates have already taken a beating over my candidature,” Nikam said.

He also rebutted attempts to project his image as anti-Muslims saying that in his career of 40-50 years as a lawyer, he never thought about caste or religion.

Responding to the sex controversy row, Amit Shah said, “I Want To Ask Priyanka Gandhi…”

According to Amit Shah, the BJP supports narishakti, or women, and will not put up with any slight against matrushakti, or mothers.

Union Minister Amit Shah has charged that the Karnataka Congress administration is failing to act on offensive videos purporting to depict NDA candidate Prajwal Revanna, grandson of former prime minister HD Deve Gowda, sexually abusing multiple women.

In an interview with reporters this morning, Mr. Shah stated that the BJP’s position on the matter is unambiguous: it is that of the “matrushakti” (mothers or women). Amit Shah poses the question, “I Want To Ask Priyanka Gandhi,” in reaction to the sex controversy, igniting curiosity and conjecture.

After divorcing Adil Khan Durrani, has Rakhi Sawant come back together with her ex-husband Ritesh? This is what we currently understand.

“It is the BJP’s unambiguous position that we support the nation’s’matrushakti’. Congress, whose government is it that I wish to ask? The Congress Party is in power. Why haven’t they acted up till now? Since this is a matter of state law and order, the state government must handle it; we are not required to take action,” he stated.

The Union Minister stated that a case study is something the BJP is in favor of.

“It is very serious, we cannot tolerate it. We want to ask Congress that despite being in power, why hasn’t the government acted yet? Priyanka (Gandhi Vadra) ji should ask their Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister,” said Mr Shah.

Parineeti Chopra says she decided to marry Raghav Chadha without knowing if he was already married, or had kids.

Ms. Gandhi had earlier criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the sex scandal involving the JD(S) leader.

Prajwal, a sitting MP from Karnataka’s Hassan constituency, is contesting the ongoing Lok Sabha polls, but the JD(S) has sought to distance the BJP from the case.

He has denied the allegations against him as “doctored” in a police complaint.

The alleged videos of him surfaced on Saturday, a day after his constituency went to polls. On Sunday, he left for Germany, pending a probe against him.

India General Elections 2024: South is in focus as Modi aims to win the Lok Sabha.

India General Elections 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is leading his campaign to win the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, and as the Indian political scene heats up, all eyes are on the South. At this critical juncture in Indian politics, the battleground moves towards the southern states amid a frenzy of activity and expectation.

With an eye on expanding its political footprint beyond its conventional strongholds in the North and West, Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is positioning itself strategically in the run-up to the elections to seize important constituencies in the southern regions. There is a lot on the line, as the BJP needs a good performance in the South to maintain its grasp on the national leadership.

  • Polls have opened in the second of the seven-phase India General Elections 2024 with 13 states voting for 88 seats in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India’s Parliament.
  • The first phase of the vote was held on April 19 in 102 constituencies across 21 states and union territories.
  • The elections primarily pit the National Democratic Alliance, led by two-time Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), against the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, spearheaded by the main opposition party, the Indian National Congress.
  • Voters will elect representatives to fill 543 seats of the Lok Sabha. The party or coalition that secures a majority will form the next government.
  • About 969 million registered voters are eligible to participate in the world’s largest democratic exercise over six weeks. The results will be announced on June 4.

Modi wants to turn India election into a Hindu-Muslim war

As defenders of Hindu interests, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have opted to run in this seven-phase national election.

Additionally, they have said unequivocally that safeguarding Hindu interests entails defending them against Muslims.

They claim that the opposition Congress party is working with the Muslim community to steal the money and privileges of the Hindu majority and give them to Muslims, putting them in danger.

The prime minister made a clear reference to Muslims when he said at a rally in Rajasthan on Sunday that the opposition would seize Hindu riches and give it to those “who have more children.” He continued by referring to the Muslim community as “infiltrators.”

There was indignation over Modi’s remarks in several places. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has been urged to take action against him for his hate speech by individuals and organizations from all throughout the nation.

Sam Pitroda favors succession taxes in India and claims that Congress is “distributing wealth in the interest of people.”

How do Muslims in India feel about the general election?

Before the multi-stage national election that is expected to hand Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP government another term in power, Muslims in India share with Al Jazeera their hopes, concerns, and opinions.

How dubious YouTube ‘news’ channels boosted Modi

With over 460 million users, YouTube’s largest market is India, where four out of every five internet users access the platform.

YouTube is becoming an increasingly popular source of news for Indians, but not all of the content is newsworthy. Several of the most well-known YouTube channels in India are spreading misinformation and inciting Islamophobia; they frequently support PM Modi and his BJP while disparaging opposition figures and opponents.

These channels are distinct since they identify themselves as “news” channels and purport to offer fact-based reporting. However, the actual situation is distinct.

How is the government formed after the election?

The lower house’s party with a simple majority of 273 seats or more is invited to form a government and appoint its prime minister. The president of India will request that the leading party attempt to form a coalition if no one party crosses that barrier.

In the past, this has resulted in days or even weeks of heated horse trading and discussions between the parties in an attempt to come to a consensus.

‘We exist’: A Himayalan hamlet, forgotten by Indian democracy

Jiten Toto, a native of Totopara in West Bengal state, says he has little faith that anything would change in India during the election. The people living in this small but distinct area of the nation believe they have been ignored for too long by the largest democracy in the world.

Approximately 75% of the estimated 1,670 Toto population is entitled to vote, making them one of the world’s smallest tribes.

Many Totos claim that politicians have consistently disregarded their issues because of their tiny number and distant location.

“Not much progress has been made toward our growth. Poor roads and subpar health care are continuing issues, according to Jiten. “After the poll, no political leader has ever visited this location to assess the state of affairs.”

When will the results be announced?

It is illegal under Indian law to publish exit poll data while an election is in progress. Hence, any indication of which way the vote is trending will only come after the last phase of voting concludes on June 1.

Formal ballot counting begins three days later on June 4, though the use of electronic voting machines means tallying will be quick. Results should be announced on the same day.

India General Elections 2024

Can Modi win a historic third term?

If Modi wins, he will be only the second Indian leader to retain power for a third term after Jawaharlal Nehru, the country’s first prime minister.

The BJP controls much of Hindi-speaking northern and central India but is now trying to gain a foothold in the east and south.

Its toughest challenge in the second phase is Kerala, where voting is being held on all 20 seats.

What happened in Phase 1?

The first of the seven phases of the mammoth Indian general election took place on April 19 when 102 seats across 21 states and union territories voted.

For some states such as Tamil Nadu and Uttarakhand, elections were held on all the seats in the first phase. Key northern states including Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are voting in all phases.

According to India’s election body, the voter turnout in the first phase was 60 percent.
