What Ram Charan Posted For His Padma Vibhushan Awardee Dad Chiranjeevi.

Ram Charan is on cloud nine. After all, his father, megastar Chiranjeevi, was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan – the second-highest civilian award in India. The ceremony took place on May 9, Thursday, at the Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi. The awards were presented by President Droupadi Murmu. On the special occasion, Chiranjeevi was accompanied by his wife Surekha, their children — Ram Charan and Sushmita — and Ram Charan’s wife, Upasana. To celebrate his father’s big day, Ram Charan has shared pictures and a video on Instagram. In the first photo, the entire family is seen posing for the camera. Then, we get a glimpse of Chiranjeevi accepting the Padma Vibhushan honour from Droupadi Murmu. Along with the album, Ram Charan wrote, “Congratulations Dad. So proud of you.” Reacting to the post, Upasana wrote, “Wow Mr. RC – posted on time!!!” Musician Harsha Vardhan Raaj dropped red heart and fire emojis.

Ram Charan also shared another picture with Chiranjeevi. Here, the two can be seen with the award. The side note simply read, “KONIDELA BLOOD.”

Wait, there is more. Ram Charan shared one more image of his father receiving the honour from President Droupadi Murmu.

Chiranjeevi

In January, Chiranjeevi expressed his gratitude for being selected for the Padma Vibhushan by sharing a video shared on X (formerly known as Twitter). In the clip, he can be heard saying, “After hearing this news, I became speechless. I am really overwhelmed. I am humbled and grateful for this honour. It’s only the unconditional and invaluable love of the people, audience, my fans, my blood-brothers and blood-sisters that allow me to reach here. I owe my life and this moment to you. I always try to express my gratitude the way I can though I know I can never do enough. On screen, the last 45 years of my film career, I have tried to entertain you in the best of my abilities.  And off-screen, I try to help the needy by taking up relevant and social humanitarian causes from time to time.”

Chiranjeevi added, “I have done so little yet you have given me such a great recognition and honour. I always remain indebted to you for your love and support. On this occasion, I would like to thank the Government of India and the honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modiji for bestowing on me this coveted Padma Vibhushan. Thank you one and all. Jai Hind.”

Chiranjeevi, in 2006, was honoured with the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award.

A 30-year-long Harvard Study Reveals Ultra-Processed Foods Linked to Early Death.

A 30-year study found that people who regularly consumed ultra-processed foods and meats faced a 13% higher likelihood of premature death.

  • Ultra-processed foods are those food items that contain additives and ingredients not commonly found in home kitchens
  • Those with diets high in sugary and artificially sweetened beverages saw a 9% increase in the risk of early death
  • Diets rich in ultra-processed foods were associated with a 4% higher chance of mortality.

A recent study by Harvard University, spanning over 30 years and tracking 1,14,000 participants, has highlighted the risks associated with consuming ultra-processed foods (UPF).

Higher consumption of most ultra-processed foods is linked to a slightly higher risk of death, with ready-to-eat meat, poultry, and seafood-based products, sugary drinks, dairy-based desserts, and highly processed breakfast foods showing the strongest associations.

Ultra-processed foods are those food items that contain additives and ingredients not commonly found in home kitchens, such as artificial sweeteners, colors, and preservatives. These are foods that are high in saturated fats and lack nutrients and fiber.

The research, published in the BMJ, revealed alarming findings: people who regularly consumed ultra-processed meats faced a 13% higher likelihood of premature death over the study period.

Moreover, those with diets high in sugary and artificially sweetened beverages saw a 9% increase in the risk of early death.

Overall, diets rich in ultra-processed foods were associated with a 4% higher chance of mortality.

During an average 34-year follow-up period, the researchers identified 48,193 deaths, including 13,557 deaths due to cancer, 11,416 deaths due to heart diseases, 3,926 deaths due to respiratory diseases, and 6,343 deaths due to neurodegenerative diseases.

Arvind Kejriwal: The Chief Minister of Delhi Receives Respite From the Supreme Court; Temporary Bail is Granted Until June 1.

Eating too much ultra-processed food can be bad for your health, especially certain types. Ready-to-eat meats, sugary drinks, desserts, and breakfast foods are linked to a higher risk of death. So, it’s best to limit these kinds of foods in your diet.

The researchers concluded, “The findings provide support for limiting consumption of certain types of ultra-processed food for long-term health. Future studies are warranted to improve the classification of ultra-processed foods and confirm our findings in other populations.”

Previous studies have also linked UPFs to a range of health issues, including cancer, mental health problems, type 2 diabetes, and premature death.

In Western countries, UPFs now make up a significant portion of the average person’s diet, comprising as much as half of daily food intake.

Among younger people and those with lower incomes, this proportion can soar to 80%.

To combat these concerning trends, experts suggest focusing on unprocessed and minimally processed foods, which include fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and unprocessed animal products like eggs, fish, and meat.

These foods, which make up about 30% of the typical UK diet, provide essential nutrients without the harmful additives found in ultra-processed options.

This study highlights the importance of public health initiatives aimed at reducing reliance on ultra-processed foods for better overall health and longevity.

Murder In Mahim review: The eight-part series focuses on regular people (and their families) to be found in modest dwellings and crowded police thanas, through a sharp look at the LGBTQi community.

For a jaded viewer who has almost always been invited to look at a split-level Mumbai, residing in either fancy high-rise towers, or its slummy, scummy underbelly, Murder In Mahim comes as a relatively fresh look at working-class stiffs, and their connection with killings that arise out of unhappy circumstance, rather than by chance.

Miss USA Pageant Resignation: Under Scrutiny as 2 Winners Resign Citing Mental Health, Disrespect.

Based on terrific Bombay chronicler Jerry Pinto’s novel of the same name, the eight-part series strays somewhat from the original by some additions and subtractions and deviations, but stays largely faithful to the heart of the story which focuses on regular people (and their families) to be found in modest dwellings, crowded police thanas, general wards in hospitals, beach shacks, through a sharp look at the LGBTQi community.

A young sex worker is found brutally murdered, his innards pulled inside out, in a public toilet at Mahim station. Police inspector Shivajirao Jende (Vijay Raaz) takes along newbie cop Firdaus Rabbani (Shivani Raghuvanshi) to learn on the job while they go sleuthing. As the two muddle along on the trail of bodies which pile up, a couple more cops (Bharat Ganeshpure, Satya Vijay) keep cropping up for reasons best known to themselves.

There are red herrings aplenty. Could the killer be Sunil, the son of former journalist Peter Fernandes (Ashutosh Rana) who has had a fall-out with Jende? And also, could Sunil be gay? What are those two other policemen doing: are they trying to help or hinder the investigation? What connection does a dead man’s sister (Sonia Balani) have with the murders?

There are times when you zone out, and those are places when the writing borders on the explanatory and/or banal. The series is set in the period prior to the Supreme Court decision to decriminalise same sex relationships, so we find a group of protestors outside the cop station going through the motions. There are stretched out portions, along with some eye-roll sections (especially one between a secretive woman who wants publicity and Fernandes): also, the antagonism between Raaz, who settles himself into Jende’s role, and Rana’s retired journalist feels contrived, even if it is nice to see these two solid actors face off, before joining forces.

Srikanth Movie Review: Rajkummar Rao Infuses This Inspirational Biopic with Talent and Sincerity.

The most impactful part of the series, written by Mustafa Neemuchwala and Udai Singh Pawar, and directed by Rajesh Acharya, is the portrayal of men who like other men, and who have to resort to drastic measures to manage crucial intimacy. Rajesh Khattar, playing an ageing roué, comes off exaggerated but alive to the challenges of finding lasting love. As his character says, with feeling, sometimes it is not about the sex alone, it is about touch and warmth, and even for that, if you have to resort to smelly restrooms, how alienating and cruel can it be.

That’s when you are confronted by the stink that no deodorant can quite take away: that of prejudice, dislike and homophobia. When the show wafts those over your way, you wrinkle your nose, but before you can completely stop inhaling, you’ve taken them in. Can you shift your stance against men, and women, who choose their own sex to love, and to hold? Yes, says the series, but before that, there will be blood.

Arvind Kejriwal Bail: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been granted interim bail by the Supreme Court.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been granted provisional bail by the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court of Delhi has granted temporary bail to New Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the case of his suspected intoxication. This bail is valid through June 1. Abhishek Singhvi, the attorney for Arvind Kejriwal, had requested that bail be granted before June 4. But Kejriwal was given temporary release by the court until June 1st, provided that the campaign finishes 48 hours beforehand. Another restriction placed on Arvind Kejriwal is that he is not allowed to discuss the subject with supporters. In the meantime, polls are scheduled on May 25 in Punjab and June 1 in Delhi.

When will Arvind Kejriwal come out of jail?

After the Supreme Court granted interim bail to Arvind Kejriwal, the court order will be sent to the trial court. After that, the order of release from the trial court will be sent to the Tihar Jail administration. Arvind Kejriwal will be released after due process is completed by the Tihar Jail administration. All release orders received daily in Tihar Jail are processed in about 1 hour. In such a situation, there is a possibility that Arvind Kejriwal will be released from jail today.

Arrested by ED on March 21

ED arrested Arvind Kejriwal on March 21. ED officials raided Kejriwal’s house. Kejriwal was arrested by the ED officials after a few hours of interrogation. At that time, Aam Aadmi Party workers took to the streets and staged aggressive protests. In the interim, Kejriwal had tried to get bail. However, they were not successful. But now, Arvind Kejriwal will be out of jail ahead of the Delhi Lok Sabha elections as the Supreme Court has granted him interim bail. This is considered a big relief for Aam Aadmi Party.

ED opposes Kejriwal’s bail

The Delhi Chief Minister had filed a petition in the court seeking interim bail for the Lok Sabha election campaign. Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on March 21 in the Delhi liquor policy case. It was said that Kejriwal, who is in ED custody, should get bail to participate in the election campaign. However, the investigating agency had already opposed granting bail to the AAP chief. It said that giving bail to Kejriwal would send the wrong message. He cannot be treated as a special person. However, a bench of Justice Sanjeev Khanna and Justice Dipankar Dutta granted bail to Kejriwal after hearing the arguments.

Miss USA Pageant Resignation: Under Scrutiny as 2 Winners Resign Citing Mental Health, Disrespect.

Miss USA Pageant Resignation: Noelia Voigt, a 24-year-old Venezuelan American, and Mexican-Indian American Miss Teen USA UmaSofia Srivastava, who is 17, has resigned in the space of a few days.

The resignations of the reigning Miss USA and Miss Teen USA in the space of a few days have put the pageants’ parent organization under the microscope — especially as the young women cited mental health and differences in values as their reasons.

The pair stepped down just days after an employee of the Miss USA organization — which was created in 1952 and owned for a time by Donald Trump — quit, citing “workplace toxicity” and claiming the two titleholders were mistreated.

Claudia Michelle, Miss USA’s social media director, resigned on May 3, saying in an Instagram post that she had worked without compensation for two months, was not given proper staff, and believed management disrespected the winners.

Michelle said she had worked closely with Miss USA Noelia Voigt — a 24-year-old Venezuelan American who was crowned in September — and had seen “a decline in her mental health” — an issue Voigt mentioned when she resigned on Monday.

As for Miss Teen USA UmaSofia Srivastava, who is 17, Michelle said she had “firsthand seen the disrespect toward Uma and her family.”

“I disavow workplace toxicity and bullying of any kind,” Michelle wrote, slamming the “unprofessional and inappropriate” way she felt management had spoken to Voigt and Srivastava.

In her own Instagram post, Voigt — who represented the western state of Utah — said she was resigning, noting: “Never compromise your physical and mental well-being. Our health is our wealth.”

She called her time as Miss USA “incredibly meaningful,” highlighting her charity work and being the first Venezuelan American to win the title.

But she also said she hoped to “inspire others to remain steadfast, prioritize your mental health, advocate for yourself and others by using your voice, and never be afraid of what the future holds.”

Internet sleuths have even pointed out what they believe to be a coded message: the first letters of each sentence in Voigt’s statement spell out “I AM SILENCED.”

Srivastava — a self-described “first generation, Mexican-Indian American” from New Jersey — said Wednesday she was relinquishing her crown as her “personal values no longer fully align with the direction of the organization.”

In response, the Miss USA organization said: “We respect and support Noelia’s decision to step down from her duties. The well-being of our titleholders is a top priority.”

Miss Teen USA issued a similarly worded statement about Srivastava.

Miss USA Controversy

The Miss USA contest has seen several controversies and scandals in recent years, with multiple allegations of preferential treatment given to certain contestants, according to media reports.

The organization later found those claims to be unsubstantiated, but the president of Miss USA, former titleholder Crystle Stewart, stepped down.

Her husband Max Sebrechts, who had served as the organization’s vice president, left amid a swirl of sexual harassment allegations made by past contestants.

Voigt’s resignation was the first time that a Miss USA titleholder had surrendered the post since the inception of the competition for any reason other than being crowned Miss Universe, a linked pageant.

Cheslie Kryst, who was crowned Miss USA in 2019, died by suicide in early 2022.

In her memoir, published posthumously last month and excerpted by People magazine, she wrote of “long-standing insecurities” that again came to the fore when she won the title and suffered online abuse.

Srikanth Movie Review: Rajkummar Rao Infuses This Inspirational Biopic with Talent and Sincerity.

Srikanth Movie Review: Rajkummar Rao is one of the few actors who are capable of fully inhabiting his role, and even more important, shedding all vanity in the process.

Srikanth tells the story of the real-life Srikanth Bolla, the visually-impaired self-made billionaire, and his extraordinary journey from a dirt-poor Andhra village to the national stage as one of India’s leading industrialists.

Even as it comes with the usual disclaimer of creative liberties, the plot hews as close as it can to real life in a feature film: the delight of the father (Srinivas Beesetty) turning into dismay when he holds his sightless newborn in his arms, his mother (Anusha Nuthul) begging for his life, the bullying in the local school, his brilliance shining through, getting into MIT when IIT refuses him entrance, his return to India, and his embarking upon the untrodden path that takes him into the kind of unbelievable sunshine that most people, leave alone those with disabilities, only dream about.

There’s no doubt that Tushar Hiranandani has chosen a worthy subject. Despite the increase in advocacy and raising awareness, putting a person with a disability in the center of the frame continues to be an act of bravery, especially now when theatrical releases are dying by the dozens. With Rajkummar Rao playing the part of Srikanth Bolla, it’s a given that you will get both skill and utmost sincerity. Touching upon the high points of a difficult life in a 2.5-hour feature leans towards broad brushstrokes, though, and this takes away complexity, the story-telling ends up being pretty basic.

Is Srikanth’s portrayal life-like? This is crucial to us believing. On that score, Rao scores, though I did get distracted by his eyebrow wiggle in the second half of the film, which also becomes drier. Rao is one of the few actors who is capable of fully inhabiting his role, and even more importantly, shedding all vanity in the process: when his Srikanth Bolla repeats his mantra, Sri Can, and smiles, you smile back.

As Srikanth’s rock, the teacher who stood by him when all hope appeared lost, Jyotika is convincing. Alaya F pops up as the young woman who becomes fascinated by this man who doesn’t let anything come in the way of what he wants to do and instantly adds a bit of sparkle to the film. You wish she was given a bigger role: who is this girl? Sharad Kelkar is reliable as always, as the faithful friend who never turns his back on Srikanth, even when the latter becomes too full of himself and starts throwing his weight around.

Dispensing with this aspect, that disabled people need to be ‘noble’ and ‘good’, is the strength of this film: Rao does a solid job of being disgruntled and too smart for his good, telling us that people with deep challenges are, after all, also human. They can also behave badly. More focus on this side of Srikanth, whose endeavors in real life have had a lasting impact on blind students wanting to opt for the sciences, would have lent the film a welcome interiority.

And then are the message-y parts, heavy on dialogue, laden with life lessons, which come thick and fast. While Srikanth’s climactic speech telling us what we must and must not do when faced with people with disabilities is effective, it is also a lazy device, which makes the movie more tell, than, well, show. Plus, my biggest bugbear, the background music, is so glaringly loud, especially when the film kicks into gear, that it drowns even the dialogue. Why, can’t filmmakers trust us to feel those feelings ourselves?

Still, despite its limitations, I will take ‘Srikanth’. Because it chooses to tell the story of someone who refused to be labeled a Bechara — no standing on the road and begging for alms or ‘making candles’ –and celebrates an individual who managed to lift himself from a hole in the ground where he was going be buried alive, to someone who created a job for himself, and countless people like him. Because it talks of barbaric, not recharging: yes it comes off as a dialogue, but it is also effective.

When Srikanth says knowingly, ‘hamaare chakkar mein mat panda, beach ke kha jayenge’, you are startled, and then you laugh out loud. You know instantly that this is a guy who has learned that self-pity is self-defeating, that he is grateful to have been supported to be able to reach a point where he can make the best of his innate abilities, and that he is a winner. And everyone loves a winner, right?

  • Srikanth movie cast: Rajkummar Rao, Jyotika, Sharad Kelkar, Alaya F, Jameel Khan, Srinivas Beesetty, Anusha Nuthul
  • Srikanth movie director: Tushar Hiranandani
  • Srikanth movie rating: 2.5 stars
