India vs England: How Jasprit Bumrah demystified the cult of Bazball with his ego, angst and subtle taunt!

India vs England: Jasprit Bumrah has struck telling blows to turn the tide and the series India’s way and humble high-flying England.

Jasprit Bumrah rarely gives interviews. Even when he does, he rarely opens up. Don’t read too much into that ever-present toothy smile, those giggly post-match interviews or his over-polite public school manners. There is more to him.

It’s his cryptic posts, candid comments picked by the stump mic, stray thoughts he shares with team mates on long podcasts and insights shared by those close to him that give a better idea about the Real Bumrah — the man responsible for demystifying the cult of Bazball and returning for the final Test after a break.

Under coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes — England seemed to have achieved the impossible. They had convinced their fans, and other stakeholders that entertainment, and not winning, was the true essence of sport. That was until they landed in India and bumped into a proud bowler who had survived early rejections and toxic social media slander to be a one-of-a-kind modern day great pace bowler.

In the early part of the series, for the first-time since they got together, R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja seemed to have been mastered by a touring team. SOS was out, the panic button was about to be pressed. But just in time, Bumrah stepped up. And it wasn’t just him quickening his pace and sharpening his skills. What stopped the march of cricket’s newest hipsters was the ego and angst of Bumrah.

Polite but proud

“He is the most polite player around and friendly too. But he is a bowler with a big ego. If he gets hit, expect a bouncer soon. He is very sensitive. He in his own silent way knows how to make a point,” says a franchise old hand.

India vs England

This isn’t a new trait, it is something he had in him since the time he was just another young boy in Ahmedabad spending his evenings playing tennis ball cricket with friends.

“If we hit him for four or six, the next ball would either be a bouncer or beamer,” Mehta, an IT professional, had said.

Over the years, he has evolved. At 30, Bumrah is seen as a thinking pacer. He isn’t that naïve or one-dimensional to fall back on his oldest weapon, the yorkers, every time he is under pressure. But in this series, there was one yorker that will be remembered for long. It was easily the comeback moment of the series, one that will be talked about for years to come.

After his match-winning 196 at Hyderabad in the first Test, Ollie Pope had given England the momentum. India can be intimidated by aggression, believed the England dressing room. The world also saw Stokes as a pioneer, the messiah who had shown the way to those who failed on slow-low turning sub-continent tracks.

However, the notion lasted for just a Test. On the second day of the second Test, Bumrah bowled a special spell around tea time. He first shattered Pope’s stumps with a reverse swinging yorker that followed the trajectory that was once famously charted by Waqar Younis. Pope was on 23. Since that dismissal his scoring sequence has been 39, 3, 23, 23, 1.

In a spell that read 6-4-3-3, his other two wickets were Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow. At that point, the series took a turn, India had extinguished the flame that had threatened to burn down their Fort. Bumrah was also making an important point. When fit, he was India’s Man Friday. Those doubting him either didn’t know him or hadn’t made an effort to.

As is his wont, Bumrah, on that day at Vizag, didn’t yell in the face of Pope, Root or Bairstow to tell them how wrong they were in assuming that India had been caged. He was smiling, busy celebrating with his team mates. Even after the game, he preferred to stay dignified. Bumrah believes in pinning down his opponent into submission. Rubbing the nose in the ground, that’s not his style. His ego would have got hurt after the Hyderabad loss but the sight of flying stumps on the barmy Vizag day had healed it. That’s how Bumrah plays his sport.

Even when he makes a point, Bumrah is subtle.

At Rajkot in the third Test, England were chasing 557 in the fourth innings. The Bazball demon still hadn’t been slayed, the bravado and swagger hadn’t yet left Stokes and his believers.

Opener Ben Duckett had made the outlandish remark of Yashasvi Jaiswal learning attacking cricket from them. James Anderson was taking pains to tell the media that the team’s philosophy was still about winning at all costs, that is losing included. He shared with the media that the Baz in Bazball, coach McCullum, had told the team that even if England had to chase 600, they would go for it.

Fate had granted them the wish, at Rajkot they would get a target in that range. But England were unable to walk the talk. They would have a nightmarish start. They were 28/3 and the game was just 11 overs old.

Now Bumrah had Joe Root in front of him. He didn’t seem in an adventurous mood. Bumrah, maybe anticipating some Root innovative hit, bowled an off-cutter. The batsman, instead, would defend it. Bumrah was amused, he looked at this captain and said: “Ab toh maar hi nahi rahe hai (They are not looking to hit now)”. The voice amplified by the stump mic would reach around the cricketing world. An important statement was being made in the most casual and deferential tones. This was Bumrah passing a judgment — the pulse was low, Bazball was breathing heavily.

During the series, in his moment of triumph, Bumrah would show bitterness, expressing his disappointment in the way he has been treated. It was clear, in his mind, the champion bowler thought that he hadn’t got a fair deal.

After the second Test, when he topped the ICC Test ranking, he showed his angst. His Instagram post had two pictures – one of a jam-packed cricket stadium and the other was a lone spectator sitting among empty seats. The first was labelled “The Congratulations” and the other “The Support”. Once again Bumrah was being dignified as he reminded everyone how he didn’t have support when he needed it most.

For most of last year when Bumrah was nursing a career-threatening injury, he was constantly trolled. Memes were made about how he had missed India games but would get miraculously fit for IPL. This India-England series, Bumrah had to make a point. Of late, he had seen another setback. Despite the experience of being the India captain for a tour recently, despite being loyal to Mumbai Indians, he didn’t replace Rohit Sharma as captain. That privilege went to Hardik Pandya, who MI redrafted from Gujarat Titans. It was around this time, Bumrah would write another puzzling post – “Silence sometimes is the best answer.”

A man of few words, Bumrah’s real communication with his fans and others is through his bowling. Those yorkers, the kind he got Pope with, are loud and direct taunts to his fickle fans and those doubting his skills. In the final Test here, the pacer has a chance to end debates about commitment and caliber.

Six years back Bumrah had made his Test debut under the Table Mountain to rattle a strong South African batting line-up. Now under the gaze of snowy Dhauladhar in Dharamsala, he has a chance to further undermine Bazball’s street cred. Flanked by the enchanting yet echoing hills, he can also carefully whisper to the world a reminder that they shouldn’t celebrate just his peaks.

Smriti Irani Slams Lalu Yadav over ‘Without Parivaar’ jibe at PM, says, ‘Nobody will be able to touch even a hair…’

Patna Police has registered a case against Lalu Yadav and his son Tejashwi Yadav over their statement against PM Modi!

Smriti Irani

Union Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani railed against Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Yadav as the latter said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi “has no family and is neither a Hindu”.

Responding to the RJD leader, Irani said, PM Modi has a family of 140 crore Indian and added, “No one could even dare to touch even a hair of the Pradhan Sewak”.

Addressing a gathering at the ‘Namo Yuva Maha Sammelan’ organised by Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) in Maharashtra’s Nagpur, Smriti Irani said, “The fodder thief of INDI alliance said that he (PM Modi) has no family, I want to tell him that, we are ‘Modi’s parivaar’, these youths are ‘Modi’s parivaar’…nobody will be able to touch even a hair of that person whose family are 140 crore people of India”.

Irani referred to Yadav as a ‘fodder thief’ as the RJD leader was found guilty of the infamous ₹139 crore ‘chara ghotala’

Meanwhile, Patna Police has registered a case against Lalu Yadav and his son Tejashwi Yadav over their statement against PM Modi.

On the other hand, Smriti Irani has dared Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to have a debate on the “difference” between the 10 years of UPA rule and the Narendra Modi government.

“If my voice is reaching Rahul Gandhi, then he should listen with open ears. Let there be a discussion on what is the difference between your (UPA) 10 years and Modi’s 10 years,” she said.

“I guarantee that even if an ordinary worker of Yuva Morcha starts speaking in front of Rahul Gandhi, he will lose the strength to speak,” she said.

Smriti said in her address that the BJP has fulfilled the three major promises made to the public in the party manifesto in the last 10 years.

She said that the abrogation of Article 370 that ended the special status of the then state of Jammu and Kashmir, women’s reservation in the legislature, and the construction of Ram Mandir were these promises and they were fulfilled.

Apple iPhone 16 series India price, specifications and everything we know so far

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 16 series is rumored to bring significant upgrades with powerful performance and AI integration. The new-gen iPhone, expected to launch in Fall 2024, may also carry a higher price tag in India.

Apple iPhone 16

In Short

  • The iPhone 16 series is expected to launch in Fall 2024.
  • Rumors suggest the series will bring significant upgrades and AI integration.
  • The iPhone 16 series is also likely to carry a higher price tag in India.

The iPhone 15 series is currently one of the top premium smartphones available in the market. The series was launched a few months ago with four devices in the lineup – iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, and the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. All models sport a new 48-megapixel main camera, with the Pro models boasting an additional telephoto lens with either 3x or 5x optical zoom. The Pro models also benefit from the faster A17 Bionic chip and longer battery life, while the standard iPhones use the A16 Bionic chip. Finally, all iPhone 15 models also ditched the Lightning port in favour of USB-C, enabling faster data transfer and removing the need for multiple cables. However, even though the launch of the iPhone 15 series is fresh and is offering the best of features, whispers of its successor, the iPhone 16, are already circulating online.

Expected in Fall 2024, leaks and rumours of the iPhone 16 series are suggesting that the upcoming new-gen iPhone will receive significant upgrades and powerful performance with the integration of AI. Let me detail more on everything we know so far about the upcoming iPhone lineup.

iPhone 16 might look like iPhone X with bigger display

In a recent newsletter, Bloomberg’s reporter Mark Gurman hinted at a significant design change for the iPhone 16. He revealed that the iPhone 16 might adopt vertical camera cutouts at the rear, reminiscent of what we saw in the iPhone X. In Fact he revealed that the iPhone 16 could draw design inspiration from the iPhone X’s overall look while featuring a larger display. If true, this would signify a departure from the current design language seen in the iPhone 15 series.

Additionally, according to Gurman, the “Pro” models in the iPhone 16 lineup may experience a size increase. Specifically, the iPhone 16 Pro could reach 6.3 inches, while the larger iPhone 16 Pro Max might scale up to 6.9 inches. Howver, despite the increased size, Apple is expected to maintain the same thickness and overall design. Furthermore, reports indicate that micro-lens technology may be integrated into the OLED panels, promising improved brightness and reduced power consumption.

New buttons in iPhone 16

Apple is expected to standardise its popular “Action Button” from the iPhone 15 Pro across all models. Additionally, the company may introduce a new pressure-sensitive “Capture Button” that resembles a physical camera shutter.

iPhone 16 Pro models to get the A18 Pro chip

Apart from big design changes, Apple is also said to increase the power of its new gen iPhones. Under the hood, the iPhone 16 is expected to feature next-generation A-series chips, developed using advanced N3E technology. These chips promise improved speed and extended battery life. Notably, the standard models may house the A17 chip, while the Pro models could be equipped with the A18 Pro, boasting an additional GPU core and enhanced Neural Engine capabilities. The difference in the chips will follow Apple’s tradition of distinguishing performance chips between its standard and Pro variants. However, there are rumours that Apple may cease this distinction with the iPhone 17 series, possibly in 2025.

iPhone 16 with bigger battery, fast charging speed

In terms of battery power, Apple reportedly plans to extend the battery life of its iPhone 16 series through improved battery technology and support for faster 40W wired charging. Additionally, the Pro models might incorporate an upgraded thermal management system utilising graphene and a metal battery case.

Reports suggest that in the iPhone 16 series, Apple will adopt new battery technology for prolonged usage, coupled with faster charging speeds. Leaked images have also hinted at a redesigned battery with a capacity of 3355mAh for the Pro model, addressing users’ power-related concerns.

Better camera system for iPhone 16 series

Apple is also said to be making significant improvements to the iPhone 16’s camera department. As mentioned earlier, Apple is planning to bid farewell to its traditional diagonal camera setup in favour of a new vertical arrangement. This shift is speculated to enable features like Spatial Video capture, specifically tailored for Apple’s Vision Pro headset.

Additionally, the iPhone 16 Pro Max is also said to feature a “Tetra Prism” 5x optical zoom lens, a 48-megapixel Ultra Wide lens for better low-light photography, and even a unique 48-megapixel wide-angle camera with a hybrid lens. These enhancements could significantly improve zoom capabilities, promising users more power to their photography.

AI Integration and Software Enhancements

To keep up with competitors, Apple is also reportedly planning to bring significant AI capabilities to the iPhone 16 lineup. Speculation suggests that Apple’s addition of AI capabilities will come with the new iOS 18 and the iPhone 16 lineup. The new AI features will include smarter Siri-Messages integration and personalised Apple Music playlists.

iPhone 16 series might costs more than 15 series

While the iPhone 16 is expected to boast new features and significant upgrades, it’s also rumoured to carry a higher price tag. In India specifically, the launch price of the iPhone 16 is said to be steeper than its predecessors, the iPhone 13, 14, and 15, which interestingly maintained a consistent price point.

Industry analysts predict that the iPhone 16 will see a slight price bump compared to previous models. Considering the rumoured enhancements and advancements, we can expect a price increase of $100. For Indian consumers, this could translate to a roughly Rs 10,000 increase compared to the preceding models, aligning with Apple’s global pricing strategy.

Notably, all this information is based on rumors, and the final specifications and pricing will be revealed by Apple only during the launch.

Tata Motors, the global automobile manufacturer saw its shares jump 4.52% in today’s early trade, surpassing the significant milestone of ₹1000 to reach ₹1031.90 per share.

This notable uptick in share value followed investor enthusiasm spurred by the company’s strategic decision to demerge its commercial and passenger vehicle segments into two distinct listed entities. This move aims to enhance the company’s ability to capitalise on growth opportunities effectively.

On Monday, the company approved a demerger proposal for Tata Motors, splitting it into two distinct listed entities. The first entity will encompass the Commercial Vehicles business and its associated investments, while the second will include the Passenger Vehicles segment, consisting of PV, EV, JLR, and their related investments.

Over the past few years, the Commercial Vehicles (CV), Passenger Vehicles (PV+EV), and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) businesses of Tata Motors have delivered a strong performance by successfully implementing distinct strategies. Since 2021, these businesses have been operating independently under their respective CEOs, the company said in its exchange filing.

The demerger will be implemented through an NCLT scheme of arrangement, and all shareholders of Tata Motors shall continue to have identical shareholding in both of the listed entities.

Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr loses first leg of Asian Champions League quarterfinal!

Ronaldo’s: A first-half goal from Moroccan forward Soufiane Rahimi was enough for one-time champion Al-Ain to have the advantage in the return leg in Riyadh

Cristiano Ronaldo returned from suspension and could not prevent Al-Nassr losing to Al-Ain 1-0 in the first leg of their Asian Champions League quarterfinal on Monday.A first-half goal from Moroccan forward Soufiane Rahimi was enough for one-time champion Al-Ain to have the advantage in the return leg in Riyadh next Monday.

Ronaldo was fresh after missing a Saudi Pro League match on Thursday as punishment for making an alleged offensive gesture during the previous game against Al-Shabab.

A video appeared to show Ronaldo cupping his ear and repeatedly thrusting his hand forward near his pelvis in a gesture that seemed to be aimed at Al-Shabab fans who were chanting the name of Lionel Messi, Ronaldo’s longstanding soccer rival.

Al-Ain’s fans did the same but were almost silenced in the sixth minute when Ronaldo went close with an overhead kick. In the final moments, he attempted a lob from the halfway line that was just wide of the post. Another shot from close range was saved by Al-Ain goalkeeper Khalid Eisa.

It could have been worse for Al-Nassr as Al-Ain, coached by former Argentine striker Hernan Crespo, had two goals disallowed for offside.

The game ended with Al-Nassr down a man after Aymeric Laporte was sent off in stoppage time for violent conduct. The former Manchester City defender will miss the second leg.

“We are only halfway through, and while going to the next round is going to be difficult, we still have 90 minutes at home,” Al-Nassr coach Luis Castro said.

The winner of the tie is guaranteed a semifinal against Saudi opposition. Al-Ittihad and Al-Hilal meet on Tuesday in the second quarterfinal in the western zone — the tournament is divided into two geographic halves until the final.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and claimed “he is not a real Hindu” as he did not get tonsured when his mother Heeraba Modi died in December 2022.

According to Hindu customs, men should shave their heads when a parent dies.

Lalu Yadav made the remarks while addressing a ‘Jan Vishwas Maha Rally’ at the Gandhi Maidan in Patna, which was attended by several Opposition leaders, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and party president Mallikarjun Kharge, as well as Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav.

The former Bihar Chief Minister also targeted the Prime Minister for his remarks on nepotism, saying that “people with more children are subjected to humiliation over the issue”.

This was the first Mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) rally held in Patna, as well as the first after Lalu Yadav underwent a kidney transplant in Singapore in 2022.

While taking potshots at the Prime Minister over nepotism, Lalu Yadav praised his daughter Rohini for donating her kidney to him.

The RJD chief also asserted that, despite multiple ailments, his work towards the people continued.

While appealing to defeat the BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, he said, “Bihar has given lots of great personalities. In the same Gandhi Maidan, leaders of the country have held rallies and meetings.”

“Bihar is the land that drives the country. Bihar’s opinion has so much power that the people of the country imitate what Bihar decides,” he added.

On Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar switching sides to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the RJD chief said, “We never abused him when he broke the alliance with us.”

“Is he not ashamed of what he does? The BJP will be decimated in the coming polls. We stand united against the BJP,” he added.

Also addressing the rally, Kharge questioned PM Modi’s slogan “Modi Ki Guarantee” and asserted that Nitish Kumar will never be taken back to the Mahagathbandhan fold.

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi alleged that the Centre was being benefitted by their corporate benefactors with loan waivers as small and medium businesses were affected under the pressure mounted by demonetisation and the enforcement of the Goods and Services Tax.

CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury and Akhilesh Yadav claimed that the actual ‘Amrit Kaal’ will come only after the BJP is ousted from power.
