Xiaomi SU7’s in-house tech ingenuity is indicative of a shift in philosophy!

By building a flexible software platform for phones, tablets, smart home devices and now a cutting-edge car, Xiaomi has a plethora of data points to work with for an ecosystem

Xiaomi SU7’

For a brand that is now well known in the world of smartphones, you’d expect Xiaomi to make bold moves. One that would define a category, for years to come. That is how they’ve got to where they are, with phones (they’re third largest smartphone maker, globally). Yet, as this journey through the past provides an inspiration, the tech company is intent on charting a new path for itself. One that has an outlook of not just a decade down the line, but much beyond. A bold move to make an electric car, the SU7, is reminiscent of exactly how they took the world of phones by storm a decade ago. At stake is not just finding a spot at the table in due course alongside the biggest automakers in the world, but also the future of smartphones.

Except this time, the difference is, Xiaomi is spending big on research and development to build much more in-house, rather than curating a collection of components from vendors. That’ll reduce the reliance on sourcing components, and minimalizing supply chain eccentricities. That is the foundation of five core technologies that define most EVs, and in particular the Xiaomi SU7, in entirety – the E-Motor, Battery, HyperCasting, autonomous driving and a smart cabin. Building the hardware in close sync with how Xiaomi intends the software platform to be, should bear fruit once the SU7 goes on sale – and that isn’t exactly clear at this time.

Xiaomi is making heavy investments into the EV space, which means the SU7 isn’t likely a one-off, and neither will it be sacrificed at the altar of the accountants, as many a concept car, have in human history. To be precise, 10 billion CNY or Chinese Yuan. There is no external funding, Xiaomi confirms to HT. Lei Jun, founder, chairman, and CEO of Xiaomi Group has set a target for the 15 to 20 years of effort – Xiaomi wants to be one of the top five global automakers.

In the immediate future, Xiaomi’s challenge will be perception of pricing, an unknown thus far, since no specifics have been confirmed yet. There will be inevitable comparisons on pricing, and assuming the more tech loaded SU7 will be on the pricier side of the scale, pitted against Tesla’s comparatively less tech infused Model 3 for instance. The assumption about the SU7’s pricing also stems from the car demonstrated at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) showcase in Barcelona.

HT noted there are 8 cameras all around the car as just one crucial part of the expected autonomous driving tech, and the brakes being used by Xiaomi are made by Italian automotive braking systems giant Brembo. These are generally high-performance brake systems, found in very powerful luxury cars and sports cars.

Anuj Sharma, Chief Marketing Officer for Xiaomi India, draws comparisons with the phone space, with their latest and most feature rich phone, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, “Tesla is a benchmark, whether we like it or not. I think it is equivalent on the phone side, where the Xiaomi 14 Ultra on a global scale is going to be compared with the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max.” The plan is to persist. “The end of the idea is to excel in terms of tech, excel in terms of product, and slowly make your mark there,” he tells HT.

There are three electric motors that Xiaomi wants to offer with the SU7. The launch spec will have the Xiaomi HyperEngine V6/V6s motors, capable of 21,000 rpm or revolutions per minute – this will be offered as 2-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive options, with differing peak power output ratings. Expected to be in mass production sometime next year, is the HyperEngine V8s, rated at 27,200 rpm. In pre-research stage is an even more powerful HyperEngine, which can deliver 35,000 rpm and will have a carbon-sleeve. Quite what this means for performance as well as efficiency, and when this is ready for production models, remains to be seen.

With an investment as significant as this, comes a detailed plan of action. “When we announced this project was in 2021, the biggest investment is the manpower investment. We have some of the best minds on the company, looking at just this part, including chairman Lei Jun who actually took time out said ‘I’m going to focus on the car and get that car going’. Of course, every year from the existing businesses, whatever profit was being generated was used to fund this project,” Sharma gives us an insight into how Xiaomi has charted an investment as big as this, to get the car business going.

Xiaomi’s battery architecture means it is just 120mm thick (that’s roughly the height of fourteen iPhone 15 Pro Max, stacked), with 91% reduction in wire harnesses used and translates into roughly 3% lesser space than most other EVs. Quite interesting is what Xiaomi calls a 72-in-1 unit, referencing the integrated die-casting rear floor. This has reduced the number of welded joints by 840, is 17% lighter for just this component (weight saving is usually good news for an EVs battery) and also reduces road noise transferring into the cabin.

In case you are wondering why Xiaomi haven’t announced the pricing and availability specifics for the SU7 or the SU7 Max, it is because a stage of testing is still underway before the project is given the green signal. Testing, is specific too. “The biggest test for any electronics is the thermal aspect of it. Once you get into very hot or very cold temperatures, battery efficiency decreases massively. For the last four or five months, the entire testing has been in extreme cold climes,” Sharma tells us. The idea is to the battery to a point where any performance change or unreliability or the breaking point becomes clear.

For Xiaomi, the software means more than just a platform for a car. HyperOS, as it is called, has been developed to be all-encompassing. Xiaomi’s Android phones, tablets and a broad ranging smart home ecosystem, all plug into this. The latest smartphones, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra and the Xiaomi 14 are the first phones to arrive in stores with HyperOS preloaded, whereas some existing phones as well as the Xiaomi Pad 6, are receiving software updates too.

That’s what defines its ‘Smart Cabin’, as Xiaomi calls it. Sharma believes HyperOS and the company’s Human x Car x Home approach is significant because it taps the three places where humans spend their most time every day – at home, at work, and commuting. It is about a “philosophy that’s covering these three aspects”, as Sharma puts it, with the car in the middle of this transition.

It may require a change in approach to how some people perceive cars. “Obviously, a car has to be more than just a vehicle to get you from point A to point B. How does it connect with your life? With those data points, we’re basically able to understand more about how a person lives. The objective is, make it easier and make it more seamless,” says Sharma.

There is fairly basic example – your Xiaomi phone would know when you are leaving office (there can be many metrics for this, such as location, steps tracked or leaving the office Wi-Fi at a particular time of the day) and the car starts up automatically to begin balancing the cabin to a comfortable temperature before your arrival to the parking spot. At the same time, Sharma believes this is just the start, and there are possibilities which are impossible to envision at this point in time.

“The way the entire interconnected ecosystem and AI aspect is supposed to play out, in three to five years, it may include functionality and capabilities we cannot even imagine today. But our objective remains the same,” he says. And that is, the human is the most important part of this process. For us in India, any hopes of buying the SU7 must wait, because production will for now focus on the home market, China. But with global aspirations very clear, it may not be a long wait. Though the company refuses to commit to any timelines.

For Xiaomi, making a car is also about the flex, a signal that they are positioning themselves into becoming a technology powerhouse, at a global scale. Sharma reckons that the car’s development is exciting, but the company’s plans aren’t limited to just that. There’s more to come, across categories. As he defines it, this is an overall shift in the philosophy of Xiaomi.

Steve Smith ‘not fussed’ about making it to Australia T20 World Cup 2024 squad

Steve Smith has said he isn’t thinking too much about making it to the Australia squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 as questions have been raised about his spot in the team after the New Zealand series.

  • Steve Smith’s spot in the T20 World Cup squad hangs in the balance
  • Smith said he isn’t too fussed about making to World Cup
  • Smith said he doesn’t see opening the batting in Tests as anything different

Steve Smith has claimed that he isn’t ‘too fussed’ about making it to the T20 World Cup 2024 squad of Australia after his horrid run of form during the recently-concluded T20I series against New Zealand.

Smith could only score just 15 runs in two matches, putting his position in the T20I squad under doubt. His teammate Matthew Wade had recently admitted that it would be tough for the Australian star batter to make it to the T20 World Cup.

However, Smith has claimed he isn’t thinking too much into it. Speaking to AAP, the star batter said that he got a couple of good deliveries during the New Zealand series. Smith said that he is unsure about what the selectors want to do in terms of making a call.

“I got a couple of decent balls to be fair. (Adam) Milne got one to take off in the second game, which was tough. Lockie, when that sun was setting, it was quite difficult to pick up and he gave me a nice in-swinger. Look, it wasn’t ideal, but it is what it is and whatever will be, will be from here. I’m not really sure what (selectors) want to do. I’m not really too fussed either way. If I’m there, I’m there. If I’m not, I’m not,” said Smith.

Don’t see it any different: Steve Smith on opening

Smith is now all set to turn his focus towards the longest format of the game as the Test series against New Zealand would start on February 29, Thursday. Since the retirement of Warner, the star batter has been elevated to the opening spot.

Speaking about his new role, Smith said it’s fun and he doesn’t view it any different from his time batting at No.3 or 4 in the batting order.

“It’s fun, but honestly I don’t see it as anything different. I batted at three for an extended part of my career and I batted at four, where I’ve been in inside of two overs. It’s really nothing that new to me,” he explained.

Australia will be playing two Test matches against New Zealand.

UK-based gangster likely involved in Haryana politician’s Nafe Singh Rathee murder: Cops

The Haryana Police, investigating the murder of Nafe Singh Rathee, has said a UK-based gangster was suspected to be involved in the case.

In Short

  • UK-based gangster likely involved in killing of Nafe Singh Rathee
  • Police to interrogate gangster’s associate in Tihar Jail
  • FIR names former MLA and others, also mentions five unnamed accused

A UK-based gangster was likely involved in the killing of Nafe Singh Rathee, Haryana unit president of Indian National Lok Dal and former MLA, the Haryana Police has said.

The police also said they would interrogate a close associate of the gangster, lodged in Delhi’s Tihar Jail, in connection with the case. Earlier, the police interrogated Sandeep, alias Kala Jathedi, one of the top gangsters in Haryana, in Tihar Jail.

During interrogations, Sandeep denied any involvement in Singh’s murder.

Rathee and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) worker Jai Kishan were killed when unidentified assailants sprayed their sports utility vehicle (SUV) with bullets at Bahadurgarh, near Delhi, on Sunday. The assailants who shot dead Rathee in his SUV told his nephew, who was driving the vehicle, that they were sparing his life so that he could inform his family, according to an FIR.

In the FIR, the police named former MLA Naresh Kaushik, Karambir Rathee, Ramesh Rathee, Satish Rathee, Gaurav Rathee, Rahul and Kamal.

The FIR also mentioned five unnamed accused.

Meanwhile, in his police complaint, Rathee’s nephew Rakesh said five unidentified killers, who were following them in a car, came out and fired indiscriminately near the Barahi railway crossing. Complainant Rakesh told police that he was behind the wheel and Rathee was sitting next to him. In the rear seat, two persons, including the INLD worker killed in the incident, were sitting.

Rakesh said they were returning to Bahadurgarh on Sunday evening.

The attack, which came less than two months before the Lok Sabha polls, drew sharp reactions from the opposition parties in the BJP-ruled state.

On Monday, Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij said the probe into Rathee’s killing will be handed over to the CBI even as 12 people, including a former MLA, were booked in connection with the murder.

The statement came as Vij, in the Haryana Assembly, denied the Opposition’s charge that the law-and-order mechanism has collapsed in the state.

Lionel Messi scores equalizer to help Inter Miami get draw against LA Galaxy

Lionel Messi emerged as the saviour for Inter Miami as the Argentine turned back the clock to grab a last-gasp equalizer for his side to secure a draw against LA Galaxy on February 25.

Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi proved to be the saviour of Inter Miami as he scored a stoppage-time equalizer to help them get a 1-1 draw against LA Galaxy.

What happened when Inter Miami took on LA Galaxy?

The match’s opening goal came in the 75th minute, courtesy of LA Galaxy’s Dejan Joveljic. The play unfolded rapidly, with Riqui Puig launching a powerful shot from just outside the penalty area. Although Miami’s goalkeeper, Drake Callender, managed to block the initial attempt, the ball fortuitously landed at Mark Delgado’s feet. With precision, Delgado set up Joveljic for an easy tap-in, marking the first goal of the evening and putting Galaxy ahead.

However, the Galaxy’s lead was precarious, especially after Delgado received his second yellow card, reducing the home team to ten men. This pivotal moment added tension to the match, as LA Galaxy braced to defend their slender lead against a determined Inter Miami.

As the clock ticked down, Messi emerged as the hero in the dying moments of the game. In the second minute of stoppage time, following a series of quick exchanges with Jordi Alba, Messi found the back of the net with a precise left-footed strike, securing a vital point for Inter Miami and maintaining their unbeaten start to the season.

Inter Miami have 4 points at the moment and maintained their unbeaten start to the season.

The match was not short of action from the beginning, with LA Galaxy dominating possession and creating numerous scoring opportunities. Despite this, the score remained deadlocked at halftime, thanks in part to Callender’s heroics between the posts for Miami, including a crucial penalty save from Puig in the 13th minute.

Puig have another big chance to open the scoring in the 29th minute, only for Callender to make another fine stop to keep the scores level.

For Inter Miami, the draw was a hard-fought point on the road, while LA Galaxy was left to rue missed chances but showed they could compete with the best in the league.

Love-bombs, use of AI: Indian woman “Shreya Datta” in US loses crores to scammer

  • Indian woman in US loses Rs 3.73 crore in cryptocurrency romance scam
  • The scam is commonly known as “pig butchering”
  • The scam involved use of digitally altered deepfake videos, tricking into fake crypto investment.

The “wine trader” wooed her online for months with his flirtatious smile and emoji-sprinkled texts. Then he went for the kill, defrauding the Philadelphia-based tech professional out of $450,000 in a cryptocurrency romance scam.

The con — which drained Shreya Datta, 37, of her savings and retirement funds while saddling her with debt -– involved the use of digitally altered deepfake videos and a script so sophisticated that she felt her “brain was hacked.”

The scam is commonly known as “pig butchering,” with victims likened to hogs fattened up by fraudsters with feigned love and affection before the proverbial slaughter — tricking them into a fake crypto investment.

The rapid growth of this fraud, thought to be run by crime syndicates in Southeast Asia, has resulted in losses worth billions of dollars in the United States, with victims saying there is little recourse to recover money.

As it has for many victims, Datta’s experience began on a dating app — Hinge, in her case, where last January she met “Ancel,” who introduced himself as a French wine trader based in Philadelphia.

Datta said she was “charisma bombed” as the conversation quickly moved to WhatsApp. The gym buff with a dreamy smile deleted his Hinge profile to give her “focused attention,” a refreshing experience in the age of fleeting online relationships.

They exchanged selfies, flirty emoticons and did brief video calls in which the suave but “shy” man posed with a dog, later determined to be AI deepfakes.

They texted daily, with “Ancel” enquiring about little things like whether she had eaten, preying on Datta’s desire for a caring companion after her divorce.

Plans to physically meet kept getting pushed back, but Datta was not immediately suspicious. On Valentine’s Day last year, she received a bouquet from “Ancel” sent from a Philadelphia flower shop, with the card addressing her as “Honey Cream.”

When she sent him a selfie, posing with the flowers, he sprayed her with red kiss mark emojis, according to WhatsApp exchanges seen by AFP.

Between the mushy exchanges, “Ancel” sold her a dream.

“The dream was, ‘I’m retiring early, I’m well off. What is your plan?'” Datta, an immigrant from India, told AFP.

“He’s like, ‘I’ve made all this money investing. Do you really want to work till you’re 65?'”

He sent her a link to download a crypto-trading app — which came with two-factor authentication to make it appear legitimate — and showed her what he called money-making trades through annotated screenshots seen by AFP.

Datta converted some of her savings into cryptocurrency on the US-based exchange Coinbase and the fake app initially allowed her to withdraw her early gains, boosting her confidence to invest more.

“As you make astronomical amounts of money trading, it messes with your normal risk perception,” Datta said in hindsight.

“You feel like, ‘Wow, I can do even more.'”

“Ancel” egged her on to invest more savings, take out loans and, despite her reluctance, liquidate her retirement fund.

By March, Datta’s nearly $450,000 investment had more than doubled on paper, but alarm bells went off when she tried to withdraw the amount and the app demanded a personal “tax.”

She turned to her London-based brother, who did a reverse image search of the pictures “Ancel” had sent her and found they were of a German fitness influencer.

“When I realized it was all a scam and all the money was gone, I had proper PTSD symptoms — I couldn’t sleep, couldn’t eat, couldn’t function,” Datta said.

“It was very traumatizing.”

Dating sites are rife with disinformation, with Facebook groups such as “Tinder swindler dating scams” and “Are we dating the same guy?” cropping up, and researchers calling out the growing use of AI-generated profile pictures.

But the use of romance as a hook to commit financial fraud is provoking new alarm.

The FBI told AFP that last year more than 40,000 people reported losses totaling well over $3.5 billion from cryptocurrency fraud, including pig butchering, to the agency’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.

But that estimate is likely low, as many victims tend not to report the crime out of shame.

“What’s horrific about this crime is it is meant to take every last penny from its victim,” Erin West, a California-based prosecutor, told AFP, adding that she is “deluged with victims every day.”

Self-harm among victims is a common concern, campaigners say, with most unable to recover their losses and some falling prey to another breed of scammers — fake recovery agents.

Datta, who is in therapy and has moved to a smaller apartment to manage her debt, said she had little hope of recovery after reporting the crime to the FBI and Secret Service.

Neither body responded to AFP’s queries about her particular case. Nor did Coinbase, which informed Datta in an email –- after she was conned — that she “may have sent cryptocurrency to a fraudulent investment platform.”

More agonizing, Datta said, was dealing with public judgments such as, “How could you be so stupid?”

“There should be no shame in becoming a victim of this absolutely masterful psychological scam,” West said.

“Victims are truly brainwashed.”

Adani Group in talks with Uber to introduce electric passenger cars!

On February 24, Gautam Adani and Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi held a meeting during the latter’s India visit.

Adani Group in talks with Uber ceo

A partnership to roll out Adani Group’s electric passenger cars on Uber’s ride-hailing platform formed part of discussions during the February 24 meeting between Gautam Adani and Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, who is currently on a visit to India,

Also, under the proposed partnership, Uber’s services will be brought under Adani One, which was launched in 2022, and offers services such as flight bookings, holiday packages, and cab bookings, with Uber integration.

How will the partnership help Adani Group?

As per the report, the Ahmedabad-based infrastructure major aims to enter the electric passenger vehicle segment, and, a collaboration with the San Francisco-based ride-hailing aggregator, helps to ‘fasten’ the former’s play. The group, however, is already present in the commercial EV segment, and offers buses, coaches, and trucks.

Also, though Adani Group is not into vehicle manufacturing, it has ‘huge’ requirements in its ports and airports businesses. Essentially, therefore, it will purchase cars, brand them, and add them to the Uber network. Recently, the group submitted bids for tenders floated by the government for more than 3600 electric buses.

How will the partnership help Uber?

The collaboration, if it happens, will play a role in helping the company meet its objective of replace its existing fleet with EVs across the globe, as it looks to transform itself into a ‘zero-emission mobility platform’ before 2040.

How will the partnership benefit India?

The partnership has the potential to boost the adoption of electric four-wheelers in the country, and could give Uber one of its largest electric vehicle fleet collaborations in the world.
