Indians suffered worse post Covid lung damage than others, says study; how to improve lung function!

When it comes to lung damage, Covid seems to have taken a heavy toll on the respiratory health of Indians, compared to Europeans and Chinese, says a new study.

Covid lung damage

As per a new study, Indians Covid survivors suffered significant and greater lung function impairment compared to their Europeans and Chinese counterparts. When it comes to lung damage, Covid seems to have taken a heavy toll on the respiratory health of Indians, as demonstrated by this new study. The study done by Christian Medical College, Vellore on the impact of Covid-19 on the functioning of lungs and quality of life in Indians, was published in the PLOS Global Public Health journal

The study was done during the first wave of the pandemic in India on 207 Indians, and shows that the Indian subjects developed worse impairment in lung function compared to other published cohorts mostly with Caucasian subjects. This study was designed to study the impact of post-COVID-19 lung damage in patients who have recovered from Covid-19 infection with the help of lung function testing, exercise tolerance, chest radiography and quality of life measurement

The study added that while most may recover within a year of the infection, others may have permanent lung damage for life. Subjects were made to underwent pulmonary function tests, six-minute walking test, chest radiography, and St. George’s respiratory questionnaire.

“In a large Indian cohort, we have reported the presence of post-Covid-19 residual lung damage, as assessed by lung function tests, exercise capacity, chest radiography and quality of life measurements. Our population reported relatively higher symptomatology and comorbidities and greater lung function impairment, compared to most published studies. We have shown

that post-Covid-19 lung damage results in significant impairment of lung function, quality of life and effort tolerance,” said the study.

In people recovering from COVID-19, there is evidence of potential long-term pulmonary sequelae and associated lung function impairment. The most severe illness in the context of SARS-CoV-2 infection is acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). In some, the ARDS may result in fibrotic interstitial lung disease.

Signs and Symptoms of Post-Covid Lung Damage

Post-Covid lung damage, also known as post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC) or long COVID, can manifest in various ways, primarily affecting the respiratory system. Individuals recovering from COVID-19 may experience persistent symptoms indicative of lung damage, says Dr Neha Rastogi Consultant, Infectious Diseases, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram.

1. Shortness of breath: Difficulty in breathing or shortness of breath, particularly during physical activity, can persist long after the acute phase of the infection has passed.

2. Persistent cough: A lingering cough that lasts for weeks or months after the initial infection is common in individuals with post-Covid lung damage.

3. Chest pain or tightness: Some individuals may experience chest pain or tightness, which can be exacerbated by deep breathing or exertion.

4. Fatigue: Chronic fatigue is a common symptom of post-Covid lung damage, often accompanied by reduced exercise tolerance.

5. Decreased exercise tolerance: Individuals may notice a reduced ability to engage in physical activities they once tolerated, due to persistent shortness of breath or fatigue.

6. Frequent respiratory infections: Vulnerability to respiratory infections may increase following Covid-19, as lung damage can weaken the immune system’s ability to fend off pathogens.

How to treat post-Covid lung damage

Managing post-Covid lung damage involves a multidisciplinary approach aimed at alleviating symptoms and improving lung function, says Dr Rastogi.

Treatment strategies may include:

Pulmonary rehabilitation: Structured exercise programs supervised by healthcare professionals can help improve lung function, endurance, and overall physical health.

Medications: Bronchodilators and anti-inflammatory medications may be prescribed to alleviate symptoms such as shortness of breath and inflammation in the airways.

Oxygen therapy: In cases of severe lung damage, supplemental oxygen therapy may be necessary to ensure adequate oxygen levels in the bloodstream.

Nutritional support: A balanced diet rich in nutrients and hydration is essential for supporting overall health and aiding in recovery.

Psychological support: Dealing with chronic symptoms can take a toll on mental health. Counseling or support groups may be beneficial in coping with the emotional impact of post-Covid lung damage.

Regular monitoring: Close monitoring by healthcare providers is crucial to track progress, adjust treatment plans as needed, and address any emerging complications.

Maldives Sitting on a debt pile, not bankrupt as of now!

Even though Mohammed Muizzu has sought financial help from Turkey and China, no one is seen forthcoming as the island nation reels under an economic crisis.

Mohammed Muizzu

Even though Maldives has not gone bankrupt as media reports would have us believe, Male is heavily leveraged with external debt mounting to nearly USD 4.038 billion and the internal debt nearly matching the figure with debt crisis looming ahead in 2026. The gross national income of Mohammed Muizzu ruled Maldives is USD 5.6 billion as per official figures.

While Muizzu with his overt anti-India stance is asking for debt relief from his close friend Xi Jinping and Islamic emirates in the Middle-East, the Chinese debt of USD 1.3 billion constitutes nearly 30 per cent of its external debt with sovereign bonds maturing in 2026. Even though Muizzu sought financial support from the likes of Turkey and China, none is seen forthcoming as the Island nation reels in a fully blown economic crisis.

The Chinese surveillance ship Xiang Yang Hong 03, which was scheduled to dock at Male seaport for operational turnaround on February 8, is still awaited by the Maldivian authorities. The spy ship is currently located 20 hours from Male in the south Indian Ocean, well outside the EEZ of the Maldives, Sri Lanka and India.

For the record, the Chinese surveillance ship was only allowed to use the Male port for OTR and not conduct any survey or ocean bed mapping in the EEZ of Maldives and beyond.

While India is expected to replace the military crew of one ALH helicopter flying Maldivian flag by the end of this month or early March, the Modi government is on a wait and watch mode but fully prepared to help Maldives in case of an humanitarian disaster.

Rather than get worked up with Muizzu’s anti-India posture for his own political survival, the Modi government has given a green signal to Indian Navy to extend the air strip at Agatti islands in next door Lakshadweep and Minicoy Islands with a new air base sanctioned for Minicoy islands. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will commission the first squadron of MH-60 R Sikorsky helicopters in Kochi on March 4-5 and then head towards Maldives on board India’s two aircraft carrier strike forces to Minicoy to commission a new base called INS Jatayu.

Even though Muizzu’s anti-India political posturing is aimed at the Majlis elections in April, the public mood towards China’s Belt Road Initiative (BRI) for infra development in Maldives is at best lukewarm. This is after a number of countries like Pakistan, Kenya and Tanzania are reeling under BRI debt after taking high interest loans from Chinese EXIM banks.

However, it was in 2012 that Ronnie Screwvala made headlines globally when he sold his share of UTV to Disney for over a billion dollars. He had posted on X, “Finally someone smelt the coffee! Hope it’s not a whiff and then whimper but they will stay the course and get this done – for the whole eco-system! For India as an investment destination! For just credibility overall of an otherwise sunrise and sunshine sector.”

Amid the housing crisis, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pauses the immigration effort!

Justin Trudeau

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has relied on immigration to drive economic growth and plug labour gaps, but now he is hitting the brakes after a seismic shift in public opinion that could undermine his chances to win the next election.

Also Read: Justin Trudeau (Prime Minister of Canada) Biography

It was Trudeau’s father, Pierre, who championed immigration as prime minister in the early 1970s, promoting “multiculturalism” as government policy. Over time, Canadians have come to see the country’s diversity as part of its identity, like the maple leaf and hockey.

But when international students led a surge in immigration in the wake of the pandemic, the public mood soured as rental costs soared and services like healthcare came under strain.

“One of the reasons why we got here in the first place was that (provincial and federal) governments just didn’t want to touch this issue out of a fear of looking xenophobic,” said Mike Moffatt, founding director of the Place Centre, a thinktank focused on sustainable housing.

Immigration went from historically high levels of support among Canadians in 2020 to a three-decade low at the end of 2023, according to Ekos Research polling company data provided exclusively to Reuters.

In October, 44.5% of Canadians told Ekos there were too many immigrants, citing lack of affordable housing as their main reason, up from a 30-year low of 14% in February 2022. Rental inflation hit 7.8% in the final quarter of last year.

For Trudeau, the stakes are high, as his main rival, Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre has taken a commanding lead in opinion polls. Trudeau has to win back millions of voters to pull off a fourth national election victory, most likely next year.

“The chickens are coming home to roost,” said Kareem El-Assal, an immigration expert and consultant in Toronto. “There was a bit of hubris, thinking that we can just increase our immigration and temporary resident levels in perpetuity without there being any blowback whatsoever.”

Since taking power in 2015, Trudeau’s Liberal government has progressively ramped up immigration in a country where already more than a fifth of the citizens are foreign born. Last year the population grew at its fastest pace in more than six decades due almost exclusively to immigration.

Poilievre has said that he will link the number of newcomers to available housing, without providing details. But Poilievre has not pounced on the immigration issue like Republican politicians in the United States have done because he needs to win votes in immigrant communities to defeat Trudeau.

“The Conservatives, in my view, can’t exploit this issue,” said Hassan Yussuff, a senator and former labor leader. To win the election, Poilievre will be need to win urban centers that are filled with second- and third-generation immigrants, Yussuff said.

Still, the shift in public mood prompted the federal government to cap those granted permanent resident status at 500,000 starting next year and to cut study permits for international students by 35% to 360,000 starting in April.

Those moves are part of the effort to significantly reduce “the sheer volume” of newcomers “that has just gotten out of control”, Immigration Minister Marc Miller told Reuters in an interview last month.

There is a need to address the backlash because Canada is not immune to the polarisation seen in the United States, Miller said.

Chandigarh mayor resigns ahead of Supreme Court hearing, 3 AAP councillors quit to join BJP

Congress and AAP had accused the presiding officer for mayoral elections Anil Masih of defacing ballot papers during mayoral polls.

3 AAP councillors

In a new twist in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, Manoj Sonkar of the Bharatiya Janata Party resigned as Chandigarh mayor on Sunday night, a day before the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a plea alleging irregularities in the recently held mayoral polls. This followed the resignations of three Aam Aadmi Party councillors – Punam Devi, Neha Musawat, and Gurcharan Kala – in Chandigarh who had gone incommunicado three days ago and joined the BJP on Sunday night, citing “unhappiness” with the Arvind Kejriwal-led party.

Manoj Sonkar submitted his resignation to the municipal commissioner, Chandigarh BJP president Jatinder Pal Malhotra said.

“Mayor (Manoj Sonkar) has resigned from his post today. The matter of mayoral polls is subjudice; the Supreme Court will decide on it tomorrow,” Malhotra said.

This came after the Congress and AAP had accused the presiding officer for mayoral elections Anil Masih of defacing ballot papers. A video of Masih, purportedly tampering with eight votes during the counting process on January 30 had also gone viral on social media – which the top court took a stern view of.

According to Masih, during the counting of votes, Manoj Sonkar got 16 votes, Kuldeep Dhalor of the AAP-Congress alliance bagged 12 votes, while eight of the total 36 votes were declared invalid.

On February 5, the Supreme Court had rapped Masih, observing that it was obvious that he defaced the ballot papers and that he should be prosecuted, adding that his action amounted to “murder and mockery” of democracy. The court had listed the matter on February 19.

Setback for AAP

“I joined the BJP after getting inspired from the works done by PM Modi…I have left AAP because they are a fake party,” Punam Devi told news agency ANI.

According to Musawat, the AAP made “false promises to them”. “Today after getting inspired by the works of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, I have joined BJP,” she said.

With this, the BJP will have a majority of 19 votes in the 36-member house for the mayoral polls, while the AAP-Congress alliance will be left with 17 votes.

Honor X9b review: A mid-range smartphone with ‘super’ display!

The Honor X9b has a great screen and excellent battery life but it makes some compromises in other departments. How does the phone fare against it competitors?

After being away from the Indian market for three years, Honor came back in 2023 with a mid-range phone. Now, the company is launching its mid-tier Honor X9b.

The Honor X9b comes at a time when the smartphone market is quite mature and fairly saturated. If you want to spend around Rs 25,000 on an Android phone, it is very unlikely that you will be stuck with a truly bad one unless you are intentionally deciding to make poor choices. That puts most smartphone makers in a quandary — how do you convince your customers that your slab of glass is better than the ones sold by everyone else?

Honor X9b: Display is king

With the X9b, Honor has seemingly decided to pin its hopes on what it is calling the “ultra-bounce anti-drop display,” which the company claims can withstand “1.2 times the impact of a drop, whatever that means.

The truth of the matter is that I am not quite equipped to do the kind of specialised testing to see if those claims are true. Honor says that the X9b is the “first phone to get a five-star overall drop resistance certification from Switzerland’s SGS.”Certifications like this are meaningless unless they provide a benchmark to compare against. What I can say for the phone is that my clumsy self dropped it twice — once from my bed a foot or two above the ground and one from my table that is less than a metre above the ground. There was no damage.

Also, my friend’s pet cockatiel Kiwi took a liking to perching on the phone when I held it up around him. Kiwi’s sharp claws scratch my shoulder when he sits on it, but it did nothing to the phone. Of course, I am not sure how much of that can be attributed to the applied screen protector and the free transparent case that comes with the phone.

Also Read: Find the Best SmartPhones of 2024!

But there is one thing that I can say about the screen. It is brilliant.

The massive 6.7-inch screen has a 2652×1200 (1.5k resolution), giving it a very high pixel density of 429 pixels per inch. The sides of the phone’s screen curve away from the user in a way that reminds me of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. Maybe that is not what you remember that phone for.

I am usually sceptical about phones that have a curved display because I am not sure how well they deal with palm rejection but that did not seem to be an issue here. That may be because the actual screen does not really curve as much as the glass’s design makes it appear.

The hole punch cutout for the selfie camera is centred on the top, and the bottom bezel or the “chin” of the phone, is only slightly larger than the one at the top. But that did not distract me from the screen that I was glued to for hours on an end. Everything from Instagram reels to movies on Amazon Prime and anime looked crystal clear on the sharp display. It also seemed to be more than capable of reproducing colours very accurately.

Honor X9b: Performs honourably enough

The phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 chipset. That is a bit of a disappointment considering that the Realme 12 Pro Plus, [which is similarly priced] comes with a Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 chipset. The Honor X9b comes with 8GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage.

But that was more than capable of handling most of the mundane tasks I was able to throw at it. It got a score of 4,97,480 when I ran version 10.2.1 of the AnTuTu benchmark, which is far from impressive. But benchmarks don’t always give the full picture and the phone was more than sufficient for the mundane tasks that I threw at it.

While it was good enough for things that most average users would need a smartphone for, I would not recommend it if gaming is a major concern for you. The phone sometimes struggled with SimCity, a relatively light game, when I played it for extended periods of time or even switched between it and other apps. The back of the phone also got warm to the touch.

But otherwise, the smooth UI animations and the 120 Hz refresh rate combine for a very fluid daily usage experience. I am not the greatest fan of Honor’s MagicOS after using Samsung’s OneUI and OnePlus’s OxygenOS for years. However, this disdain was something I got past within just days of receiving the phone.

Another thing that impressed me was the one-and-a-half day’s worth of usage I got out of a full charge of the 5,800 mAh battery. I removed all the app timers I usually use, and this meant multiple hours spent watching media on Instagram and scrolling through Twitter and Reddit. Thanks to this phone, I am no longer worried about leaving my phone charger back at home or at the office. I know the phone can get me through the day

Honor X9b: Big and unwieldy

So, the phone has a great screen and a great battery and gives a good software user experience. But after that, things slowly start unravelling for the Honor X9b. To begin with, there is the sheer size of it. I don’t have small hands by any means but I really struggle to use the smartphone one-handed. Also, the lock button and the volume button are placed absurdly close together for a phone of this size, and I found myself hitting the wrong button many times, even after using the phone for a week.

It is not that the phone is particularly heavy. It is not. It is also not too thick. But reaching small UI elements on different parts of the massive screen can get quite inconvenient without shuffling the phone around your palm. It also got quite uncomfortable in my front pocket whenever I rode my motorcycle, restricting my movement a fair bit.

Then there is the design. The review unit I got is called the “Midnight Black” variant. This gives you a black plastic back that is fairly reflective. I do not mind the colour or even the use of plastic, since there is no way I will use any phone without a case. The problem is the camera bump.

The camera bump is dominated by two concentric gold circles that dominate the top half of the back of the phone. In the middle of the inner circle are printed the words “Matrix AI Vision Camera.” (We will get to that in a bit. Honor claims that it incorporated “high-end watch design” on the phone. I do not see any way that can be true unless the high-end watches were found in Palika Bazaar. Overall, the gold circles and the printed text combine for a very tacky look in my opinion. But looks are subjective and I am sure many will like the aesthetic that Honor is going for. Also, even though I haven’t seen it in person, the faux leather back of the Sunrise Orange variant might work better with the bling on the back.

Also, because of the way in which the cameras are placed on the island in the back, if you switch from the normal telephoto lens to the wide-angle module, you get a completely different angle, especially if you are very close to the subject in question. That brings us to the camera.

Honor X9b: Average cameras

The 108 MP “AI Vision Camera” on the phone gives me full faith that artificial intelligence or even artificial general intelligence will never take over the world. The camera system on the phone is quite a hit or miss, with an emphasis on the latter.

That is quite heartbreaking for me because the main 108 MP camera seems formidable in some situations. The image below was taken at  5.43 PM in the evening, and the lighting conditions were ideal. I love how it reproduced many of the colours faithfully despite so many things happening in the image.

But the camera is not good even when conditions are ideal. The image of the white flower below was taken with natural light at around 8 AM. Again, the lighting conditions were ideal. I even tapped on the flower in the viewfinder and dragged down the exposure. But despite that, the flower was overexposed and the image lost most of the details of the subject. The built-in AI mode on the camera identified that a flower was the subject but seemed to be unable to do anything about it. The results were pretty much equally as bad with AI on or off.

You can see the same thing happening again in this photo I took just ten minutes later. If you ignore the blur caused by the pigeons’ movements, you will see that the white pigeon once again seems to be overexposed, having nowhere near the amount of detail that you can see for the darker-coloured pigeon right next to it.

Honor X9b verdict

Many of the Honor X9b’s shortcomings are put into context by its price tag. At an event in Noida on Thursday, the company launched the phone on Amazon, at a starting price of Rs 25,999. If you have an ICICI bank card, you can get a Rs, 3,000 discount to take the price to Rs 22,999.

This places it squarely against the Realme 12 Pro, which costs the same and has the same processor, and the Poco X6 Pro, which costs Rs 1,000 more but comes with what seems like a much better processor. Pitted against its competition, the Honor X9b clearly wins the aesthetics race. The camera island on the back and the muted Midnight Black shade looked tasteful and understated in comparison.

Today’s stock market: An explanation of the 13% increase in SpiceJet’s share price!

Today's stock market

Today’s stock market: SpiceJet share price today opened upside and went on to touch an intraday high of ₹71.90 apiece on NSE

Stock market today: Amid the bull trend in the Indian stock market, SpiceJet shares witnessed strong buying interest during Friday deals. SpiceJet share price today opened upside and went on to touch an intraday high of ₹71.90 apiece, logging around 13 percent intraday rise against its Thursday close of ₹63.63 apiece on NSE. While climbing to the intraday high, the aviation company’s stock came close to its existing 52-week high of ₹77.50 that it had achieved on 5th February 2024.

According to stock market experts, the DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) has released the January 2024 data in which it has reported that the low-cost carrier has managed to hold on to its market share in January 2024.

Also Read: Treasurer Ajay Maken explains why the IT department blocked the bank accounts of Congress!

The DGCA data shows that SpiceJet has managed to hold on to its market share at 5.6 percent in January 2024. The DGCA data also reported that passenger traffic surged by 4.7 percent in January 2024.

DGCA data in focus

Speaking on the reason for the rise in SpiceJet shares, Avinash Gorakshkar, Head of Research at Profitmart Securities said, “The aviation stock is rising after the release of DGCA January data. In this data, SpiceJet has been reported holding on to its market share of 5.6 percent and the market is expecting benefits for the listing aviation company after DGCA reports a 4.7 percent rise in the number of flight passengers in January 2024.”

Gorakshkar said that the trigger is for the short term, and profit-booking on higher levels may trigger if there is no rebound after the current retracement from intraday’s high.

SpiceJet share price target

On the outlook of SpiceJet shares, Sumeet Bagadia, Executive Director at Choice Broking said, “SpiceJet shares are currently trading in the ₹60 to ₹75 per share range. the aviation stock may become highly bullish on breaching the upper hurdle of the current range whereas it may go further down if it breaches the lower support of its current range. So, a bullish or bearish trend can be assumed on the breakage of either side of the current range. SpiceJet shareholders are advised to hold the scrip maintaining stop loss below ₹60.”

Recently, The State Bank of India has been ordered to cease issuing electoral bonds “immediately” after the Supreme Court declared them to be “unconstitutional.” The supreme court’s decision was made months before the Lok Sabha elections.
