Prithvi Shaw takes Centre Stage as India Stroll to Victory: A look at the last Test played in Rajkot!

India vs England 3rd Test: Prithvi Shaw was front and centre the last time India played a Test match in Rajkot.

Prithvi Shaw cricketer

There have only been two Test matches thus far at the Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) Stadium and India face England starting Thursday to play the third. The first of the two Tests was between the same two sides which ended in a draw in November 2016. In the second, India ended up running away to their biggest ever Test victory against the West Indies in October 2018.

The match was memorable in multiple ways for Indian fans and the biggest take away from it was Prithvi Shaw making a dream international debut. Shaw opened the innings with KL Rahul as India batted first and ended up smashing 134 runs in just 154 balls. He was the youngest Indian Test centurion on debut and the second youngest Test centurion for the team since the great Sachin Tendulkar. While Rahul fell for a duck, Shaw posted a partnership of 206 runs for the second wicket with Cheteshwar Pujara, in which he contributed 113 in 124 balls. The stand ended when Pujara fell to Devendra Bishoo on 86. Shaw fell soon thereafter but India then piled on more misery on the West Indies.

Captain Virat Kohli scored 139, sharing a 105-run partnership with Ajinkya Rahane and then a blistering 133-run stand off just 148 balls with Rishabh Pant, with the latter unsurprisingly doing most of the heavy lifting in the partnership. Kohli fell after a 64-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja after which the latter went on to score 100 in 132 balls. India declared on 649/9.

The West Indies were then blown away for 181 and 196. Ravichandran Ashwin took four wickets in just 11 overs in the first innings after which Kuldeep Yadav picked five and Jadeja three in the second. India won by an innings and 272 runs, their highest margin of victory against the West Indies in Test cricket. Shaw was player of the match and, considering the reputation he had built throughout his time in Mumbai’s junior circuits, the Mumbai first class team and leading India to the U19 World Cup title, it was regarded as the start of a potentially great career. However, he has ended up playing only four more Test matches since then, the last of which came in December 2020. Shaw managed to score two more half-centuries in the eight innings after that. While he has put up extraordinary performances in domestic first class cricket since 2020, a return to Test cricket or the Indian team in any format looks far away for the 24-year-old at the moment.

Ludhiana: Seven Injured After illegal re-filling leads to Cylinder Explosion!

The Sahnewal police have booked a man, Gaurav Jha of Kanganwal, who was allegedly involved in refilling gas cylinders illegally.

Seven persons, including three children, suffered injuries after an LPG gas cylinder exploded in labour quarters in Kanganwal when some of the dwellers were refilling LPG cylinders illegally, police said on Wednesday.

The Sahnewal police have booked a man, Gaurav Jha of Kanganwal, who was allegedly involved in refilling gas cylinders illegally.

Panic gripped the area after the incident on Tuesday night. At least 25 families, who were living in labour quarters, had to vacate the rooms and spent the night in open.

The Sahnewal police lodged an FIR against the accused and initiated investigation. The injured have been identified as Priya, 32, Simpy, 23, Pawan Kumar, 29, and three children aged 10, 11 and 14.

One of the injured is yet to be identified. The victims have been rushed to civil hospital for treatment. Condition of two children, who suffered 65% burns, is stated to be serious.

The walls of the labour quarters also developed cracks due to the explosion.

According to the police, a group of labourers were involved in refilling small cylinders illegally when the gas leaked. As the women, living in the other rooms, lit the stove for cooking, the gas caught flames and the cylinder exploded. The children who were playing in the veranda also suffered burn injuries.

Shyam Raj Pandey, a local, stated that they immediately informed the police and alerted the fire brigade. They rushed the victims to hospital. The fire brigade doused the flames after one hour.

The police recovered a weighing machine, kept for weighing cylinders, and damaged cylinders from the room.

Sub-Inspector Jasvir Singh, Incharge at Kanganwal police post, said an FIR has been lodged on the statement of Dilbagh Singh. An FIR under sections 285, 336, 337 and 338 of the IPC has been lodged against the accused, who suffered burn injuries and his condition has been stated to be serious.

Farmers’ Delhi Chalo protest: 3 Union ministers will meet farmers’ leaders in Chandigarh for the third round of talks amid stand-off at Haryana, Punjab borders.

farmer protest

Several major farmers’ unions have extended their support to the protesting farmer unions at Shambhu border and Khanauri border in Punjab, with the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ugrahan) and BKU Dakaunda (Dhaner faction) announcing a ‘rail roko’ (stop trains) in the state on Thursday between 12 noon and 4 pm on Thursday, February 15. The Samyukt Kisan Morcha, an umbrella body of 37 farm unions, have also supported the ongoing protests. The protesters are demanding a minimum support price or MSP for their crops.

These unions had played key roles in the protests on Delhi’s fringes in 2021 and have joined the current protests citing the “condemnable use of violence” against farmers. BKU (Ugrahan) general secretary Sukhdev Singh Kokri Kalan has slammed the police action.

“We stand with them in solidarity. To prove it, our supporters will hold rail roko (stop trains) at as many places as we can,” he announced. The organisation will block train tracks in Punjab between 12pm and 4pm on Thursday, he said, a day before the larger nationwide strike planned for February 16.

Farmers’ ‘Delhi chalo’ protest: Key points

  • The Indian Express reported that nearly 10 protest sites have been finalised for the rail roko protest in which the BKU Ugrahan and BKU Dakaunda (Dhaner faction) will participate jointly, and more locations are likely to be added by evening.
  • Rajpura, Sunam (near Shambu and Khanauri borders, respectively), Jethuke village in Bathinda, Moga, Mansa, Malaut, Valla railway crossing in Amritsar, Barnala, Sangrur, Budhlada have been selected as the rail roko protest locations, the report added. This will affect the Amritsar-Jalandhar-Delhi line, the Mansa-Bathinda-Delhi line, Ludhiana-Ferozepur line, and many other locations, Sukhdev Singh Kokrikalan, the general secretary of BKU Ugrahan, said.
  • On Thursday, three Union ministers will meet farmers’ leaders in Chandigarh for the third round of talks as the stand-off between the protesters and police at the Punjab-Haryana border entered its third day, marked by more clashes between the two sides. The two earlier meetings, held before the march began, remained “inconclusive”.
  • Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said the meeting will be held with union ministers Arjun Munda, Piyush Goyal and Nityanand Rai at 5pm.
  • Meanwhile, defence minister Rajnath Singh and agriculture minister Arjun Munda held discussions in New Delhi on addressing the farmers’ issues, reports claimed.
  • On Wednesday, at the Shambhu border point near Ambala, there was intermittent shelling by security personnel at the ‘Delhi Chalo’ protesters. Security forces used tear smoke whenever any group of farmers moved towards the barricades. Reports claimed that security personnel faced stone-pelting from the protesters.
  • A similar stand-off was witnessed continued at the Data Singhwala-Khanauri border in Haryana’s Jind district. But the situation remained less volatile compared to Tuesday, when farmers tried to shift cement barriers at Shambhu with their tractors, attempting to push towards the national capital.
  • Farmer leaders claimed that over 100 protesters were hurt Tuesday, hit by rubber bullets and tear gas shells. Police said 24 of their own men were injured in the stone-pelting by protesters during the first day of the protest.
  • At the Shambhu border, farmers with their tractor-trolleys lining the road and more arriving from different parts of Punjab, are still over 200 km from their destination.
  • Multiple layers of concrete blocks and metal spikes are put in place at Delhi’s Singhu and Tikri borders with Haryana as well as at the Ghazipur border with Uttar Pradesh. Delhi-Sonipat traffic at Singhu and the movement of vehicles to Bahadurgarh.
  • In Delhi, commuters faced a tough time at the Singhu border due to the sealing of the area and the heavy deployment of police and paramilitary forces

iQOO executive admits that the Neo 9 Pro prioritizes camera quality above lens count as launch draws near!

iQOO prioritises camera quality in Neo 9 Pro with Sony IMX920 sensor, VCS colour grading, and AI night mode. Fewer cameras but better performance promised.

iQOO

As iQOO gears up to launch its next performance-oriented mid-range smartphone – the company is emphasising the camera capabilities of the device. This isn’t the case with many smartphones in this range. IndianExpress.com got in touch with Shankar Singh Chauhan, product manager at iQOO India, to understand more about the camera prowess of the Neo 9 Pro.

Chauhan said, “This time we have significant improvement in the camera performance of the iQOO Neo 9 Pro compared to its predecessor, especially in the main camera, which now uses the Sony IMX920 sensor, a sensor used on the flagship Vivo X100.” He also confirmed that the iQOO Neo 9 Pro will be priced under Rs 40,000, which will make it one of the most affordable Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC-powered smartphones in the country.

When asked why the iQOO Neo 9 Pro has fewer cameras compared to its predecessor, Chauhan said, “according to the feedback we received, consumers didn’t want more low-quality cameras like the 2 MP macro. Hence, this time, we have reduced both the size of the camera module and the number of cameras, and this Phone is only includes a main camera and an ultra-wide-angle lens.” Last year’s iQOO Neo 7 Technology Pro had a triple camera setup with a 2 MP macro lens.

Talking about some of the prominent camera features of iQOO Neo 9 Pro, the spokesperson highlighted that the device comes with both hardware and software camera enhancements, which include Vivo’s VCS colour grading technology that reduces the noise and offers more natural-looking colours. The device also has AI-powered night mode, which helps capture clearer skies even in low-light situations.

Chauhan added that the iQOO Neo 9 Pro, with its dedicated Supercomputing Chip Q1, enables experiences like 144fps gaming through the game frame interpolation technique on select games, and it also enhances the gaming resolution to 900p.

This Phone is launching in India on February 22, and the device will compete against other performance-oriented smartphones like the recently launched OnePlus 12R (review), which is also based on the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. This is already available for pre-order on Amazon, and the listing confirms that the smartphone will be available in at least two colour variants.

Other prominent features include a dual-tone design, Sony IMX920 sensor-powered primary camera, 5,160 mAh battery with support for 120W fast charging, 6.78-inch FHD+ 144Hz LTPO display with up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness, and up to 12 GB of RAM with 256 GB of internal storage.

An important test for the Marines’ underwater missile-delivery drone occurs this month!

On June 28, 2023, at Naval Air Station Point Mugu in California, U.S. Marines with Fox Battery, 2nd Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, fire a Naval Strike Missile from a Navy/Marine Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System. (USMC Corps/Cpl. Earik Barton)

SAN DIEGO —The U.S. Marine Corps will put a new type of missile-delivery drone to the test in an operational scenario this month, following a year of developmental work, according to a senior service official.

Lt. Gen. Karsten Heckl, the deputy commandant of the Marine Corps for combat development and integration, told reporters the service had been working on two autonomous, low-profile vessels, which resemble drug runners’ semi-submersible boats seen in Central America. The boats are designed to carry two Naval Strike Missiles to Marine units ashore, stealthily delivering their payload without attracting any attention.

“They’re very, very hard — if not downright impossible — to track,” Heckl told reporters after speaking on a panel at the WEST 2024 conference here hosted by the U.S. Naval Institute an AFCEA International. That is because the boats produce almost no wake while gliding through the water, he explained.

After working with a “mom and pop shop” to design and build the two craft, Heckl said the Marine Corps has demonstrated it can launch and recover them from the Navy’s Expeditionary Fast Transport vessels and the Marines’ Stern Landing Vessels.

This month, the Marines will demonstrate the full evolution of using these boats to resupply Marines ashore with the missiles they need to fire at ships from land.

Heckl said the boats will play a role in the Army-led Project Convergence Capstone 4 event in California, featuring in a “multi-domain mobility corridor” phase of the exercise designed to test equipment for resupply and logistics missions.

Service tests so far have been “very successful,” he added, describing the price tag as so low that the craft can be deemed expendable if lost. If the Marine Corps does decide to pursue buying these in larger numbers, however, Heckl said the service will have to find a bigger contractor for production.

Court asks govt to retest samples of Ghaziabad-based firm’s polio Vaccine!

The type-2 strain is thought to have been eradicated so long ago that the current polio vaccine no longer protects against it!

polio Vaccine

New Delhi: The Ghaziabad district court has asked the government to re-test samples of polio vaccines made by Ghaziabad-based Bio-Med Pvt. Ltd after the company contested results of a test that found contamination, two people aware of the matter said.

The retest will be done at the government-run Central Drugs Laboratory in Kasauli. In September, traces of polio type-2 virus, believed to be long eradicated, were discovered in the vaccines made by Bio-Med Pvt. Ltd, putting India’s polio-free status at risk.

“In their plea to the court, they (Bio-Med) have asked for retesting of samples, challenging the report which found its samples contaminated,” said one of the persons aware of the matter.

“The company is doing everything to get the matter delayed. The samples will be sent for retesting to the Kasauli laboratory,” added the second person.

Drug inspectors working to unearth the mystery behind the contamination of polio vaccines since September last year had in October also travelled to Indonesia’s PT Bio Farma Pvt Ltd, the company that supplies the bulk vaccine called key starting material (KSM). However, they did not find anything amiss there, bringing the spotlight back to the Indian firm that supplied the final vaccine to an official immunization programme.

According to the people cited above, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the 50-page report submitted by drug inspectors to the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) did not find “any contamination” in the KSM supplied by PT Bio Farma. “They supply KSM to many other countries and the team has not found any contamination at their end. There are some minor good manufacturing practices (GMP) related issues which will be communicated to the firm, but as far as polio contamination is concerned, the team did not find any evidence of contamination at the Indonesia site,” said the first person cited above.

PT Bio Farma said it has “proactively investigated” the matter, including batch review, facility assessment and testing of retain samples of all bulks shipped to Bio-Med using validated test methods. “Results have shown that there have not been any discrepancies in the manufacture of these bulks. Test results of retain samples do not indicate presence of type 2 polio virus,” the company said in an e-mailed response.

“Polio bulks of the same batches have also been shipped to our other partners as well as utilized by Bio Farma with no complaints of the kind,” it said.

An email sent to Bio-Med on Monday remained unanswered till press time. The company’s managing director, who was arrested in September after the test results came out, was released on bail after 14 days in judicial custody.

polio Vaccine

“The MD was charged under sections 37 A, C, section 17 (a), section 27 (a) under the Drugs and Cosmetics (D&C)Act. As per the Act, it is a non-bailable offence. To be released on bail, his lawyer referred to a decision by Allahabad high court as per which drug inspectors do not have a power to file a police complaint. We have now asked the law ministry for their opinion so that we can file a special leave petition in the SC stating to quash the order of Allahabad high court and Ghaziabad’s district court order of granting bail so that further action on the firm and its officials can be taken,” said the second person.

Polio drops, which carry weakened polio viruses, are given to children below the age of five under a government programme designed to build their immunity against the crippling disease. The type 2 strain is thought to have been eradicated so long ago that the current polio vaccine no longer protects against it, and vaccine makers have been asked to remove it from the vaccine and destroy their stocks of the strain.

However, this September, experts at the World Health Organization (WHO) found type 2 polio virus in sewage and stool samples. The batches came from Bio-Med, which was supplying polio vaccines for the government-run universal immunization programme. Around 50,000 vials—one vial has 20 doses—of contaminated vaccine are believed to have been used in Uttar Pradesh and Telangana.

Democrat Suozzi wins US House election in New York, eroding Republican majority

Suozzi, who previously held the seat before stepping down to run for governor, defeated Mazi Pilip, an Ethiopian-born Republican county legislator who served in the Israeli military. The district includes a small corner of New York City and some of its eastern suburbs.

Democratic former congressman Tom Suozzi won a special election in New York on Tuesday, Edison Research projected, narrowing an already razor-thin Republican majority in the US House of Representatives that has struggled to pass legislation.

The contest became necessary after the House took the extraordinary step of expelling Republican George Santos, whose dizzying array of lies about his biography led to his indictment on fraud charges.

Suozzi, who previously held the seat before stepping down to run for governor, defeated Mazi Pilip, an Ethiopian-born Republican county legislator who served in the Israeli military. The district includes a small corner of New York City and some of its eastern suburbs.

The result leaves Republicans with a 219-213 majority that has already proven hard to manage, illustrated by the chamber’s failure last week to pass a measure to impeach President Joe Biden’s top border official, Alejandro Mayorkas, which fell short by one vote when a few Republicans voted no.

The House approved the measure on Tuesday, after No. 2 Republican Steve Scalise returned from cancer treatment to cast a decisive vote.

Meanwhile, Democrats retained their slim majority in the Pennsylvania state House of Representatives on Tuesday after winning a special election in a Philadelphia suburb. Republicans, who already control the state Senate, would have taken over the House with a victory.

The New York district, which supported Biden in 2020 before flipping to Republicans in the 2022 mid-term elections, has served as a testing ground for both parties’ messaging ahead of the fall election, when the presidency and control of both chambers of Congress will be at stake.

“This race could be a bellwether for swing suburban districts around the country that are going to decide who controls the gavels of Congress,” said Lawrence Levy, executive dean at Hofstra University’s National Center for Suburban Studies.

Turnout, already expected to be light for a special election in February, was further depressed by a winter storm that blanketed the region on Tuesday morning with several inches of heavy snow, prompting both campaigns to offer free rides to polling places in the afternoon.

Immigration was a central issue, as it has been elsewhere in the country ahead of an expected rematch between Biden and former President Donald Trump in November.

Pilip repeatedly hammered Suozzi and the Democratic Party on the issue, accusing them of failing to control crossings at the southern border with Mexico. Pilip was endorsed by a labor union for Border Patrol officers.

“I kept migrants from being sent to Nassau and will secure the border when I get to Congress,” Pilip wrote in a Facebook post, referring to New York state’s Nassau County.

Suozzi, who represented the congressional district for six years before stepping down and running unsuccessfully for governor, called Pilip’s attacks against him misleading and said she has been short of specifics on how she would address border security.

He touted his own bipartisan immigration compromise and criticized Republicans for rejecting a border security deal negotiated in the Senate, which collapsed after Trump urged Republicans to spurn it.

“Ms. Pilip points out there’s a problem, there’s a problem, there’s a problem. She has no solutions,” Suozzi said in the election’s only debate.

He also attacked Pilip on abortion, an issue that Democrats have put front and center since the U.S. Supreme Court eliminated a nationwide right in 2022. Pilip said she is personally against abortion but did not support a federal ban.

Indian team management vexed at cricketers’ Ranji Trophy reluctancy: ‘In Hardik Pandya’s case…’

It became a matter of grave concern amid the rising talk over Ishan Kishan continued absence from all forms of cricket.

Hardik Pandya's

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are all set to take a decisive step against players idly waiting for the start of the 2024 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) without showing any interest in participating in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season, which is almost done with its league stage. According to a report by the news agency PTI, the Indian team management is particularly furious at a section of players who have shown reluctance to be part of the domestic first-class tournament despite being fit.

It became a matter of grave concern amid the rising talk over Ishan Kishan continued absence from all forms of cricket. The India wicketkeeper-batter had taken a break during the middle of the South Africa tour reportedly citing mental health fatigue. Team head coach Rahul Dravid emphasised that if and when Ishan chooses to return, he has to show some game time before returning to the Indian side, hinting at wanting him to participate in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season for Jharkhand. But the 25-year-old has stayed out of six straight league games so far. Meanwhile, he was spotted practising with Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya in Baroda, which seemed that he has been gearing up for IPL 2024 instead, leaving BCCI officials irked, added the report.

The decision makers in BCCI are well aware that some players don’t want to play any red ball cricket. If they are out of Indian team, they would at best play a few Mushtaq Ali T20 games and then not report for state team duty during red ball season,” a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity. “To rein in such players, board in all likelihood will make it mandatory to play 3-4 Ranji Trophy games, failing which, they can’t play IPL or even appear in IPL auction if released by their franchise. The state units feel unless the diktat comes from top of BCCI, some of the young stars will treat Ranji Trophy with disdain.”

While the board official admitted that Hardik’s case was different given his long struggle with a back injury, owing to which the all-rounder hasn’t been part of the red-ball format since 2018, he revealed that other young players openly refuse to participate in Ranji Trophy.

“We can understand Hardik Pandya’s case as his body can’t take the rigours of red ball cricket. He can’t withstand the workload of Test cricket and India needs him fit for ICC events. But some of the other youngsters, whenever you call them, they will cite that they are currently doing physio work. There needs to be a stop somewhere,” the official said.
