Cannes 2024: Payal Kapadia’s ‘All We Imagine As Light’ brings India back in competition at Cannes with an 8-Minute standing ovation.

Cannes 2024: Screening in the late-night competition slot, the film was the first Indian production in the competition in three decades and the first by an Indian woman filmmaker to achieve this honor

Payal Kapadia and the cast of her film, All We Imagine As Light, made a fashion splash and left quite an impression on international critics – at its world premiere at Cannes on Thursday night. All We Imagine…’ is the first Indian movie in 30 years to qualify for the festival’s competition section, which makes Kapadia a contender for the prestigious Palme d’Or. The eight-minute standing ovation at the end of the film’s screening was definitely among the longest of this edition of the film festival.

Payal Kapadia is in competition with “European heavyweights such as Jacques Audiard and Yorgos Lanthimos, American auteurs David Cronenberg and Paul Schrader, and Asian visionary Jia Zhangke”, as IndieWire reminds us.

Whether the film gets the trophy or not, it did leave international critics impressed after the screening, with Peter Bradshaw of ‘The Guardian’ showering praise on it for its “freshness and emotional clarity” and comparing Kapadia’s “fluent and absorbing” storytelling with Satyajit Ray’s in his classics, Mahanagar and Aranyer Din Ratri.

Before the screening, the internationally funded film’s star cast adorned the red carpet on the steps of the Palais du Festival, with Kani Kusruti standing out with her watermelon clutch (the green and red clutch was literally designed like a cut section of the fruit!); Divya Prabha looking a world apart from her character in the film in her classy copper-hued gown; and Hridu Haroon appearing in a veshti and long embellished kurta. Kapadia and her co-producer/cinematographer, Ranabir Das, however, settled for formal blacks.

The early reviews to pour in after the screening were glowing. In her review of the ‘gorgeous and absorbing film’, Sophie Monk-Kaufman of IndieWire wrote: This casual everyday vignette is brimming with a sensuality (the rain, the clothes, the food, the women) that people don’t tend to notice when caught up in the rhythm of life. It takes a snapshot from a photographer removed from the situation to make you realise how full these moments are.”

In the words of Fionnuala Halligan, “This fiction debut from a talented documentarian brings to mind the work of Lucrecia Martel or Alice Rohrwacher, yet there’s a strong romantic streak that also calls to mind Wong Kar-wai’s great love affair with the city of Hong Kong.”

And Jordan Mintzer of ‘The Hollywood Reporter’ could resist comparing the languorous film with the cinema the world now expects from India. He commented: ‘All We Imagine as Light’ is about as far as you can get from the stylistics of Bollywood’s masala musicals, even if there is one short and memorable impromptu dance scene toward the end. And yet its story of women looking for love and happiness in a calamitous world brings to mind those popular Mumbai-set movies, in which heroines suffer plenty of heartbreak before things eventually work out.”

Will the jury share the emotions behind the gushing reception to All We Imagine…, or hear the eight-minute standing ovation? Will Kapadia come back home with the Palme d’Or? We will know only when the awards are announced.

Aditi Rao Hydari Recreates Her Heeramandi Gajagamini Walk In Cannes 2024!

Aditi Rao Hydari Gajagamini walk has become the talk of the town since the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film Heeramandi.

If you haven’t seen Aditi Rao Hydari’s viral Gajagamini walk from Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, you must have been living under a rock. The actress’ Gajagamini walk has been the buzz of the town since Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s web-series premiere. Aditi, who is now attending Cannes 2024, just performed her viral walk at the prestigious film festival.

Aditi Rao Hydari recreated her walk from Heeramandi on the streets of Cannes in a video posted to her Instagram stories. It started with Aditi clutching an umbrella as she turned around to stroll with her team members. She wore a floral gown and looked stunning as ever. Aditi shared the clip on her social media page, writing, “#lorealparisindia #Cannes2024.” “Walking into Cannes, like.” Watch it here:

Aditi recently talked up about her famous Gajagamini walk in Heeramandi, admitting that she had no idea what it was until Bhansali described it to her. “I’d want to ask my dance teacher, Sanjay sir, what it is. Is it the Gajagamini Walk or the Swan Walk? I am not sure what stroll that is! I’ll say it was something Sanjay sir requested me to do. I followed what Sanjay sir told me. I know there is a Mayur chaal (peacock walk) in Kathak and a Gajagamini (walk of seduction), but I am sure it is in other dance genres, but I am not sure; I should look into it,” she told Zoom.

Aditi Rao Hydari plays Bibbojaan in the film Heeramandi. Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Shaikh, Sharmin Segal Mehta, Farida Jalal, Fardeen Khan, Shekhar Suman, and Adhyayan Suman play major roles in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film. It investigates numerous facets of a woman’s hardships and tribulations.

Previously, in another interview with IANS, Aditi spoke about working with Sanjay and said, “I am very protective of him. I feel he is very precious, and he should just be protected. For me, it’s a huge blessing and a blessing from him… With Bibbojaan and Heeramandi, I felt I have got more time with a person that I respect and love. I got to live a full life. I just got to be around a genius and absorb. And you know one, two, or three times are not enough with directors like Sanjay. It’s addictive, you want to keep working with him… Whatever role he calls me for, I know it will be something special.”

WI vs SA Full Scorecard, West Indies vs South Africa by 28 Runs

WI vs SA West Indies, co-hosts of the T20 World Cup, started their last preparations for the competition off right with a decisive 28-run victory over South Africa, their largest margin of victory when they batted first. Since this was the first international match at Sabina Park in nearly two years, West Indies would be happy with their dominance at home. Neither team had their first-choice XI available, with some players resting or still playing in the IPL.

Setting the tone with a forceful 45-ball 79, homegrown Brandon King, captaining in lieu of Rovman Powell, established the tone. He also had a partnership of 79 runs at the second wicket with Kyle Mayers, who is not included in the T20 World Cup team. With scores of 64 for 1 in the Powerplay and 109 for 1 at the midway point, King was the backbone as the West Indies established a solid foundation. Board exams for the class 10th were held from March 2, 2024, to March 23, 2024, and those for the class 12th from March 1, 2024, to March 23, 2024. Exams for classes 10 and 12 were administered by TBSE this year in 69 centres and 144 venues, respectively.

Agartala Board data indicates that about 38,559 students sat the Class 10th examinations in 2024, while over 27,627 students took the Class 12th exams.

In spite of their sporadic annoyances, brothers may be some of our closest confidantes and lifetime friends. National Brother Day serves as a reminder of this.

Every year on May 24th, we celebrate National Brother’s Day, a day to honour the unique bond between brothers. The day is a chance to reflect on how brothers, biological or otherwise, enrich our lives.

National Brother’s Day 2024: History

The first National Brother’s Day was observed in 2005, when Alabaman C Daniel Rhodes established the event. First observed on November 1st, ‘National Brother’s Day’ was established to commemorate and recognise the contributions that brothers provide to their families.

Celebrating All Brotherly Figures and Their Lifelong Companionship

It’s not just about biological brothers on this day. It’s an opportunity to honour people in our life who serve as brothers, such as close friends, brothers-in-law, or cousins. These fatherly role models provide companionship, support, and direction.

People are urged to get in touch with their brothers or those who have treated them like brothers in order to rejoice. This could take the form of a straightforward phone conversation, an event, or even a social media post with the hashtag #BrothersDay.

In spite of their sporadic annoyances, brothers can be some of our closest confidantes and lifetime friends. National Brother’s Day serves as a reminder of this.

“Happy Brother’s Day! I’m so grateful to have a brother like you who always stands by me.”

“To my partner in crime and my best friend, Happy Brother’s Day! Life is so much better with you in it.”

“Happy Brother’s Day! Thank you for always being there for me, through thick and thin. You’re the best brother anyone could ask for.”

“Wishing you a fantastic Father’s Day! Your presence in my life is a gift that I cherish every day.”

“Happy Brother’s Day! No matter where life takes us, I know I can always count on you. I love you, bro!”

“To my incredible brother, Happy Brother’s Day! Your kindness, strength, and love make you truly special.”

“Happy Brother’s Day to the one who knows me better than anyone else. You are not just my brother but my confidant and my hero.”

“Celebrating you today and always. Happy Brother’s Day to the coolest brother in the world!”

“Happy Brother’s Day! You make life’s journey so much more fun and meaningful. Thank you for being you.”

“I’m sending you lots of love on Brother’s Day. You’re my rock, my friend, and the best brother ever.”
