Budget 2024 LIVE updates: The budget will be ‘interim’ in nature as the government is set to face a general election in April-May this year.

Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to present the budget for Financial Year 2024-25 on February 1. This will be the final annual financial statement of the BJP-led PM Narendra Modi government’s second term. Last week, the traditional pre-budget ‘halwa’ ceremony was held- beginning a ‘lock-in’ period for officials involved in budget preparation to maintain confidentiality until the document’s tabling in the Lok Sabha.

This budget is also ‘interim’ in nature as the government is set to face a general election in April-May this year. The full budget will be presented in July by the incoming government. In India, the financial year starts on April 1 and ends on March 31 the following year.

Tokyo Olympian sailor Varun Thakkar was spotted in the crowd during events at the Khelo India Youth Games 2023 Tamil Nadu, cheering on the young wrestlers as the wrestling action began at the Rajarathinam Stadium in Chennai.
The 2018 Asian Games bronze medalist also enthusiastically reacted on every pass and penalty corner as he witnessed the men’s hockey final where Odisha beat Madhya Pradesh 4-0 at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium.

“I think the Khelo India Youth Games is a huge stepping stone for budding athletes. It gives a lot of opportunities for scouts to see young talents play at such a high level,” mentioned Varun.
Varun paired up with KC Ganapathy to represent Team India at the Skiff – 49er Event in Sailing at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. The duo also finished 5th with 48 net points in the men’s skiff 49er event at the Hangzhou Asian Games, held last year.
“I would say this is a great initiative by the Sports Ministry and the Sports Authority of India. And I also congratulate the Tamil Nadu government for such a superb organisation of the games. It was very nice to witness the wrestling and hockey action. The energy level and excitement of these athletes is tremendous,” Varun added.
Speaking about the community-building aspect of the games, Varun said, “I think the most important thing about the games is the big community it creates. There are so many States competing and there is audience representation from all these States too. The constant cheerings from the stands to the friendships building, I think this is a great environment to be in for all these guys to come together.
“The Khelo India games is a boon for sports in India and the message goes out to every nook and corner of the country to give more impetus to choose a professional career in sports.”

A Heartfelt Act of Generosity: A Doctor’s Tribute to His Father’s Legacy!

The doctor’s father was admitted to PGIMER, Chandigarh, following a brain bleed; the prognosis being poor, ge could not be revived and was pronounced brain dead.

A young doctor from Patiala donated his father’s organs at PGIMER, Chandigarh, giving two patients suffering from end-stage kidney disease a second chance at life.

The patient, Nachhatter Singh, 58, was admitted to PGIMER on January 9, following a brain bleed. The prognosis being poor, Nachhatter could not be revived and was pronounced brain dead on January 16.

On being informed, the family showcased exceptional initiative and expressed willingness to donate the patient’s organs. With his mother supporting him, Dr Kamal consented to donate his father’s organs.

Following the family’s consent, the kidneys retrieved from the donor were transplanted to two terminally ill patients dependent on kidney dialysis for long.

“It is a bittersweet moment for our family. Losing my father is undoubtedly heartbreaking, but being able to contribute to the lives of others through organ donation brings a sense of purpose to this loss. My father’s legacy lives on in the lives he has saved,” said Dr Kamal.

Dr Vipin Koushal, medical superintendent, PGIMER, and nodal officer, ROTTO (North), said, “Any initiative, however difficult, becomes successful when the community owns it and takes it forward.These families are the bedrock of the cadaver donation programme as they sustain faith for the cause. The donor’s story is a story of resurrection and of good coming full circle.

Jinping has said, “China and France should jointly open up a path of peace, security, prosperity, and progress for human development”. On the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France, Chinese President Xi offered to “break new ground” to give a fillip to bilateral ties between the two countries.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said they have offered to step up French imports to the country. We will continue to unleash consumer and investment market demand, and continue to expand the import of high-quality products and services from France,” Wang Yi said.

The Chinese foreign minister hoped that France too would provide Chinese companies with a fair, just, and predictable business environment. China prioritises ties with France as Macron is pushing Europe to become a third bloc, a balancing force between the US and China.

Last week only French President Emmanuel Macron was invited as the chief guest at India’s 75th Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi on January 26.

During Macron’s high-profile visit to India, the two countries unveiled an ambitious defence roadmap besides intensifying cooperation in the strategic Indian Ocean and the Indo-Pacific region.

Both Abhishek and Munawar had been strong contenders for the title right from the beginning with Abhishek banking on his immense popularity from television while Munawar brought with himself the experience of triumphing at a similar captivity-based reality show – Lock Upp, which he won in 2022. Before exiting the Bigg Boss house, both Munawar nd Abhishek broke down in tears as they walked across the tunnel together.

Munawar Faruqui is a popular-yet-controversial stand-up comedian. He began his career as a comedian in 2020 with a video on his YouTube channel and graduated to stand-up comedy later that year. In January 2021, a stand-up show of his from Indore saw controversy after a son of BJP MLA accused him of inciting hatred and making malicious jokes about Hindu deities. Munawar was arrested under India’s hate speech laws and spent 37 days in jail before his release the following month. His arrest led to criticism and protests.

Munawar began his reality show journey with Kangana Ranaut’s Lock Upp season 1 in February 2022. Munawar ended up winning the show, further strengthening his celebrity. Munawar entered the Bigg Boss house hoping to emulate his Lock Upp success in this show as well.

Abhishek Kumar is a popular TV actor best known for playing Amrik in Udaariyaan. The show began airing on Colors in 2021 and turned Abhishek into an overnight star. The actor also made a hit on-screen jodi with Isha Malviya. The two later began to date but had a bitter break-up. He began his journey as a social media influencer, making videos on Tik Tok. But after the platform was banned in India, he shifted to making YouTube videos. Eventually, he turned to acting, finding fame with Udaariyaan.

Abhishek had initially caused friction in the house initially as his ex Isha was in the house. Their fights often made headlines. Things heated up further as Isha’s boyfriend Samarth Jurel also entered the house, leading to a physical fight between Abhishek and Samarth, following which Abhishek was briefly eliminated too but later brought back.

The other three finalists in the Bigg Boss 17 grand finale were Ankita Lokhande, Mannara Chopra, and Abhishek Mashettey.

Chandigarh AQI ‘very poor’, Administration blames burning of waste on periphery

With prevailing weather conditions, Chandigarh AQI continued to remain in the “very poor” category for the past many days.

The average Chandigarh AQI (air quality index) on Tuesday stood at 344 around 8.05 pm, while it was 343 on Monday. The AQI reading at the continuous ambient air quality monitoring station in Sector 22 was 362. The station in Sector 53, bordering Mohali, recorded the highest AQI level of 376 and the one in Sector 25 logged 295.

TC Nautiyal, Director, Environment, UT, said the drop in the air quality might be due to the prevailing weather conditions and also, there were reports of garbage burning mostly by junk dealers in the adjoining areas of the city.

With no rain expected any time soon, the AQI is likely to remain high in the coming days as well, according to the Meteorological Department.

The AQI between 301 and 400 is considered “very poor” and can cause respiratory illness on prolonged exposure. The AQI between 401 and 500 is considered “severe” and can affect healthy people and seriously impacts those with existing diseases.

Nearly 5,000 Congress workers, along with Rahul Gandhi, trying to enter Guwahati on Tuesday were intercepted after the party restarted its flagship ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ in Assam today. Following this, party workers clashed with police officials and broke police barriers. Cops resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the crowd.

Addressing a gathering close to the Guwahati border, Rahul Gandhi said his party workers would never break the rules and disrupt law and order; however, “this doesn’t mean that we are weak”.

“Assam CM, the Union Home Minister and the PM can break the rules, but we (Congress) would never do such a thing. However, this doesn’t mean that we are weak. Congress workers are ‘Babbar Sher’,” he said, standing atop a bus.

Before leaving for Guwahati, the former Congress chief alleged that Union home minister Amit Shah instructed the Assam CM to stop him from meeting students, which was scheduled for today.

The technology giant divided the “Report spam & unsubscribe” category into two options: “Report spam” and “Unsubscribe.”

While it can be frustrating for users to receive numerous messages from subscribed sources, some individuals mistakenly categorise these legitimate messages as spam. This can adversely affect the sender’s credibility. To tackle this issue, Google has introduced a feature that enables users to decide whether to unsubscribe from such messages or report them as spam.

As per a Live Mint report, the company through a Google Workspace update, announced the new features aimed at simplifying the process of unsubscribing from unwanted emails in Gmail. Google also acknowledged the frustration users experience in managing unwanted emails and emphasised that the changes are part of efforts to enhance user safety.

The company said that it is moving the unsubscribe button to the hover actions in the thread list on the web. Once the unsubscribe button is clicked on, Gmail sends an HTTP request or an email to the sender to remove the user’s address from the mailing address. Moving the unsubscribe button to the three-dot menu to appear more prominently in the user’s Android and iOS devices.

Google plans to enforce a one-click unsubscribe link requirement for bulk senders, defined as those sending over 5,000 emails, the Live Mint report further said citing to 9to5Google. This measure is expected to be implemented by February 2024. The one-click unsubscribe button will be prominently displayed in the message body, and commercial senders will be obligated to process these unsubscribe requests within a two-day timeframe.
