Google Doodle Celebrates Musical Legacy of the Accordion.

Google Doodle 2024: The accordion is the subject of today’s Google Doodle, which highlights both its wide-ranging musical influence and its inception in 1829.

With its whimsical homage to the accordion, a cherished instrument recognised for its bellows and its wide influence across musical genres, today’s Google Doodle takes centre stage.
With its patent in 1829 (the name itself comes from the German word “akkord,” which means “chord”), the accordion has had a profound impact on the world of music. The accordion’s versatility has been welcomed by performers all over the world, ranging from exciting jazz and pop sounds to folk and classical songs.

Users may virtually play the accordion with this interactive Google Doodle, adding some musical enjoyment to their online browsing. The Doodle honours the instrument’s path from invention to worldwide popularity by highlighting the historical significance of its 1829 patent.

As per the Google Blog, “Due to the accordion’s widespread appeal among European folk musicians, German accordion manufacturers boosted their output during the late 1800s.” The buttons on the single-sided accordions of the past produced the sound of a whole chord. The ability of the same button to produce two chords—one when the bellows were expanding and another when they were contracting—is another amazing feature.”

“As Europeans spread over the globe, the accordion’s musical applications increased. Both buttons and a piano-style keyboard can be used to play modern versions; some even offer both. Occasionally, they integrate electronic components to enable them to be connected to an amplifier or produce artificially produced sounds. The instrument is still used today in a variety of genres, including cajun music, tango, Latino polka, and folk music! Oktoberfest is one occasion where the accordion is a constant. The blog went on to say, “This exciting event has music, funfair games and traditional attire like dirndls and lederhosen.

Apple and Google Collaborate to Combat Undesired Trackers; Users will be Notified if…

With this new capability, users will now get an “[Item] Found Moving With You” alert on their device if an unknown Bluetooth tracking device is seen moving with them over time, regardless of the platform the device is paired with.

Apple and Google have worked together to create an industry specification — Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers — for Bluetooth tracking devices that makes it possible to alert users across both iOS and Android if such a device is unknowingly being used to track them. This will help mitigate the misuse of devices designed to help keep track of belongings. Today Apple is implementing this capability in iOS 17.5, and Google is now launching this capability on Android 6.0+ devices.

With this new capability, users will now get an “[Item] Found Moving With You” alert on their device if an unknown Bluetooth tracking device is seen moving with them over time, regardless of the platform the device is paired with.

If a user gets such an alert on their iOS device, it means that someone else’s AirTag, Find My accessory, or other industry specification-compatible Bluetooth tracker is moving with them. It’s possible the tracker is attached to an item the user is borrowing, but if not, iPhone can view the tracker’s identifier, have the tracker play a sound to help locate it, and access instructions to disable it. Bluetooth tag manufacturers including Chipolo, eufy, Jio, Motorola, and Pebblebee have committed that future tags will be compatible.

AirTag and third-party Find My network accessories were designed from the beginning with industry-first privacy and safety protections, and Apple has remained committed to innovating and supplementing these protections to keep consumers safe. This cross-platform collaboration — also an industry first, involving community and industry input — offers instructions and best practices for manufacturers, should they choose to build unwanted tracking alert capabilities into their products.

Apple and Google will continue to work with the Internet Engineering Task Force via the Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers working group to develop the official standard for this technology.

Google employees believe the business should stop dealing with Israel and are arrested.

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian’s office by a group of protesting Google employees. The staff made a demand that the business cease its cooperation with the Israeli government.

A number of Google workers in New York and California have been demonstrating against the firm because it supports the Israeli government. After staging a massive demonstration at Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian’s California office, some employees were taken into custody for not leaving the area until their demands were fulfilled, which took more than eight hours. Among these requests was the requirement that Google cease offering cloud computing services to the Israeli government.

The employees can be seen seated inside the Google office in a video that has been circulated online of the incident.

A group of Google employees occupied the office of Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian for more than eight hours on Tuesday, and during the “notech4apartheid” Twitch livestream, they declared their demands, which included Google severing all ties with the Israeli military and government and addressing what they called a “health and safety crisis” among workers.

As previously mentioned, Google employees staged a protest at various Google offices, including New York and California. The protest was over the billion-dollar AI contract, Project Nimbus, which was signed in 2021, according to Daily Wire.

When darkness struck, one of the company representatives came up to the demonstrators, told them they were on administrative leave, and asked them to leave the property. When they refused to go, the police intervened. The employees were taken into custody and the police were called to the area, bringing the broadcast to a dramatic close.

The protesters belonged to a Google organization called No Tech for Apartheid, which has become more outspoken about the company’s commercial choices.

While protestor Emaan Haseem does not want to lose her job, she stated that she cannot continue to show up for work every week without “acknowledging and loudly condemning Project Nimbus and any support for the Israeli government.”

The message-writing part of Google Messages has been modified!

The message composition area of Google Messages is presently split into two sections. The text input box is in the first area, while the smiley, gallery, and icons are in the second section, which is directly beneath the first one. This design has a great deal of white space. Google Messages People have been requesting that Google merge the two parts as a result. Nevertheless, the business has taken notice and is attempting to implement the adjustment.

A new report from 9To5 Google claims that the message composition area of Google Messages has been changed in the most recent beta version (20240404_01_RC00). It has the smiley button on the left, the gallery and icons on the right, and merely a text input box. The updated layout appears more elegant and takes up far less room. The Magic Compose icon appears in place of the gallery icon once the text is entered in the box.

Regretfully, by default, Google Messages does not display the updated message composition part. The new design had to be manually activated by the publication. We hope that when Google Messages releases its next beta, the firm will include it by default. After extensively testing the new design, which may take a few weeks or months, Google may decide to include it in the stable version of the app.

Google Messages will warn users about visiting links sent by unknown users via RCS

It has been revealed that Google will soon warn users about the risk of visiting links sent via RCS by users who aren’t on their contacts list. This feature isn’t live on the stable version of Google Messages yet and is under testing. It was spotted by Android enthusiast @AssembleDebug (via PiunikaWeb) in the latest beta version (20240402_01_RCO0) of Google Messages. An X user pointed out that this feature even works with links received via SMS. In recent Galaxy phones, the Google Messages app is the default SMS and RCS app instead of Samsung Messages.

Hopefully, Google knows about this bug and will release a fix for this issue. Keep an eye out for an update to the Google Play Store app on your Galaxy smartphone or tablet. You can check for the update by navigating to Settings » About » Update Play Store.

Google & Apollo’s Indian AI Health Initiative!

Google Health and Apollo’s Indian Radiology International have partnered in an innovative way to use artificial intelligence (AI) to transform disease detection in India. Through this partnership, the quality and accessibility of healthcare will be improved, especially with regard to early identification of serious illnesses like breast, lung, and tuberculosis (TB).

India’s Problem with Disease Detection

India’s enormous population, which is dispersed among both urban and rural areas, presents a special set of healthcare issues. There is a severe lack of qualified medical personnel, particularly radiologists, and a marked imbalance in access to healthcare services. When it comes to early disease detection—which is essential for efficient treatment and higher survival rates—this disparity is more noticeable.

The AI Intervention by Google Health

In order to meet this problem, Google Health has implemented AI models that facilitate early disease identification. These models are intended to evaluate medical pictures, such as mammograms and chest X-rays, and to spot early disease indicators that are frequently overlooked because of a lack of specialist knowledge.

The Impact of AI on Tuberculosis In India, tuberculosis screening is still a serious health concern because to the disease’s high death rate but also its high possibility for recovery with prompt treatment. In order to fill the gap in the radiology workforce by analyzing chest X-ray scans for early indicators of tuberculosis on a large scale, Google Health built an AI system.

Taking On Breast and Lung Cancer

There isn’t a countrywide screening program for lung cancer, despite it being one of the top cancer deaths in India. Google’s AI models are intended to increase the accessibility of lung cancer screening and offer an extra check for unintentional nodules. Similar to this, AI can help radiologists interpret mammograms to scale up screening efforts across India for breast cancer, which has a death rate more than three times higher than that of the United States.

The Future of AI in Indian Healthcare

This collaboration is just the start of AI’s enormous potential in the medical field. We anticipate a dramatic change in the way diseases are identified and managed in India as AI systems advance and are more thoroughly incorporated into healthcare processes. In India, Google and Apollo AI Health Venture have made a substantial advancement in the fight against serious illnesses. This partnership has the potential to save countless lives and establish a new benchmark for healthcare delivery in the nation by fusing technology innovation with a dedication to accessibility.

Google spent ₹17,500 crore to lay off 12,000 employees!

Google parent Alphabet announced plans to cut 12,000 job in January 2023, biggest in its history.

google

Google incurred $2.1 billion (around ₹17,500 crore) in severance and related expenses during its 2023 layoffs, which affected over 12,000 employees. In this month alone, the company has already spent $700 million on severance charges for additional layoffs, encompassing more than 1,000 roles. Alphabet, the parent company of Google, disclosed these figures in its fourth-quarter earnings release on Tuesday.

In January 2023, Alphabet announced plans to cut 12,000 jobs, or 6 per cent, of its global workforce. This was the biggest layoff in the history of Google, but was “essential” for the company, chief executive Sundar Pichai had said earlier.

Alphabate posts double-digit revenue growth in 4th quarter

Google’s parent company reported a noteworthy return to double-digit revenue growth in the last quarter of the previous year, with a boost from video-sharing platform YouTube and its cloud computing unit.

The results, announced on Tuesday, marked Alphabet’s third consecutive quarter of increasing revenue growth, primarily driven by Google’s dominance in search and online advertising. This rebound is significant, considering the unprecedented drop in Google’s ad revenue following almost two decades of uninterrupted growth, especially during the initial stages of the pandemic.

However, while Google’s ad sales demonstrated growth, it lagged behind increases in other areas, such as cloud computing and YouTube subscriptions.

Despite the fourth-quarter results exceeding analysts’ expectations, Alphabet’s shares faced a dip of nearly 7 per cent in extended trading.

The company attributed its profit boost in the final quarter to the positive impact of artificial intelligence (AI).

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said: “Each of these is already benefiting from our AI investments and innovation.”

More job cuts ahead in Google

CEO Sundar Pichai has alerted employees to anticipate further job cuts in the upcoming months, aiming to “simplify execution”.

In a memo, Pichai said that the layoffs will concentrate on streamlining operations by “removing layers” from various departments to enhance the company’s efficiency, according to the report. He clarified, “These role eliminations are not at the scale of last year’s reductions, and will not touch every team.”

Woman who got laid off at LinkedIn is now earning double the salary at Google

A woman who faced unexpected layoffs from LinkedIn in May 2023 has not only rebounded but thrived in her career, now earning double the salary at Google. The individual, who had considered LinkedIn her dream job, initially found the news of the layoffs shocking and disorienting.

In Short

  • LinkedIn layoff shock leads woman to double salary at Google.
  • The woman says one should avoid tying self-worth to a specific job.
  • She got laid off at LinkedIn back in May 2023.

A woman who faced unexpected layoffs from LinkedIn in May 2023 has not only rebounded but thrived in her career, now earning double the salary at Google. The individual, who had considered LinkedIn her dream job, initially found the news of the layoffs shocking and disorienting, Business Insider reported.

Having successfully landed a position at LinkedIn in July 2022 after facing rejection from several other roles at the company, the woman had built up a positive image of the tech giant as the ultimate workplace. However, the sudden layoffs shattered this perception, leaving her feeling as though a part of her identity had been abruptly taken away.

Reflecting on her time at LinkedIn, she acknowledged living in a bubble, where her daily routine, social circle, and even her partner’s employment were intertwined with the company. The experience prompted her to question her self-worth tied to her job and the true meaning of success. She believed that LinkedIn’s layoffs might have been avoidable had the company made more judicious hiring choices and better prepared for economic uncertainties following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The impact of layoffs extended beyond the individual, affecting the overall culture of the company. Many of her colleagues, both at LinkedIn and Google, decided to leave their jobs in the ensuing months due to a pervasive low mood within the organizations.

Offering advice to those facing similar situations, the woman encouraged them to view layoffs as opportunities for personal and professional growth. She highlighted that her own trajectory post-layoff involved significant career advancement, nearly doubling her salary, and finding a workplace better suited to her at Google’s Dublin office.

Her journey also included a period of travel, which ultimately led to securing a position at Google. The woman’s story serves as a testament to resilience and the potential for positive outcomes even in the face of unexpected career setbacks. As she continues to thrive in her new role, she emphasizes the importance of not letting one’s self-worth be solely defined by their job and avoiding excessive attachment to a specific company. Besides, companies like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon have just recently fired thousands of employees to save some costs.
