Medanta chairman promotes weight loss drug in ‘deep fake’ video, case filed

The Gurugram Police has registered a case concerning a social media clip publicizing a drug with a fake testimony of Medanta Hospital chairman Dr Naresh Trehan.

Medanta chairman

The Gurugram Police has registered a case concerning a social media clip publicising a drug with the fake testimony of Medanta Hospital chairman Dr Naresh Trehan.

According to the Cyber Crime unit of the police, the FIR has been registered under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against “unknown persons” in connection with the case.

The case came after a video of Dr Trehan went viral on social media in which he was seen participating in a TV show and recommending an anti-obesity medicine.

As the video went viral, a case was filed by the hospital’s assistant vice president (AVP) for marketing, Harish Aswani, saying that a fabricated video had surfaced on social media that contained misleading information about medical treatment.

“The deepfake video features our CMD (chairman and managing director) Dr. Naresh Trehan, who can be seen endorsing this particular medication. Dr. Naresh Trehan is one of the most trusted clinicians in the country and this video damages the reputation of Dr. Trehan and Medanta Hospitals,” news agency PTI quoted Aswami as saying in the case.

“Furthermore, it may lead to unwarranted scepticism and apprehension among patients who rely on accurate and reliable information for their medical needs,” it added.

Notably, deepfake is a technology that uses AI to doctor pictures or videos in such a manner that the person can impersonate anyone and say something or do activities that never actually occurred.

Following the complaint, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered at a local police station of Gurugram.

Finland remains world’s happiest country for seventh straight year

Finland remains world's happiest country for seventh straight year

In Short

  • Finland tops UN’s World Happiness Report for seventh year
  • US, Germany drop out of top 20; Costa Rica, Kuwait enter
  • Younger generations are happier than older ones, except in North America, Australia, and New Zealand

Finland remained the world’s happiest country for a seventh straight year in an annual UN-sponsored World Happiness Report published on Wednesday.

And Nordic countries kept their places amongst the 10 most cheerful, with Denmark, Iceland and Sweden trailing Finland.

Afghanistan, plagued by a humanitarian catastrophe since the Taliban regained control in 2020, stayed at the bottom of the 143 countries surveyed.

For the first time since the report was published more than a decade ago, the United States and Germany were not among the 20 happiest nations, coming in 23rd and 24th respectively.

In turn, Costa Rica and Kuwait entered the top 20 at 12 and 13.

The report noted the happiest countries no longer included any of the world’s largest countries.

“In the top 10 countries only the Netherlands and Australia have populations over 15 million. In the whole of the top 20, only Canada and the UK have populations over 30 million.”

The sharpest decline in happiness since 2006-10 was noted in Afghanistan, Lebanon and Jordan, while the Eastern European countries Serbia, Bulgaria and Latvia reported the biggest increases.

The happiness ranking is based on individuals’ self-assessed evaluations of life satisfaction, as well as GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity and corruption.

Growing inequality

Jennifer De Paola, a happiness researcher at the University of Helsinki in Finland, told AFP that Finns’ close connection to nature and healthy work-life balance were key contributors to their life satisfaction.

In addition, Finns may have a “more attainable understanding of what a successful life is”, compared to for example the United States where success is often equated with financial gain, she said.

Finns’ strong welfare society, trust in state authorities, low levels of corruption and free healthcare and education were also key.

“Finnish society is permeated by a sense of trust, freedom, and high level of autonomy,” De Paola said.

This year’s report also found that younger generations were happier than their older peers in most of the world’s regions — but not all.

In North America, Australia and New Zealand, happiness among groups under 30 has dropped dramatically since 2006-10, with older generations now happier than the young.

By contrast, in Central and Eastern Europe, happiness increased substantially at all ages during the same period, while in Western Europe people of all ages reported similar levels of happiness.

Happiness inequality increased in every region except Europe, which authors described as a “worrying trend”.

The rise was especially distinct among the old and in Sub-Saharan Africa, reflecting inequalities in “income, education, health care, social acceptance, trust, and the presence of supportive social environments at the family, community and national levels,” the authors said.

Pashupati Kumar Paras said injustice had been done with his party. “Therefore, I resign from the post of Union Minister.”

Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party (RLJP) President Pashupati Kumar Paras on Tuesday resigned from the Modi Cabinet, a day after his party was denied any seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Bihar. “Yesterday, the NDA alliance announced the list of 40 candidates for Bihar Lok Sabha. Our party had five MPs and I worked with utmost sincerity. Injustice has been done with us & our party. Therefore, I resign from the post of Union Minister,” he said.

Chirag-led LJP will contest on five seats — Vaishali, Hajipur, Samastipur, Khagariya and Jamui.

In the last election, the undivided LJP had won six seats. Pashupati Paras was expecting these seats for his party. However, the BJP went with Chirag.

There was no mention of seat-sharing with the LJP faction led by Minister Pashupati Paras. When asked about it, Bihar BJP chief Samrat Choudhary said, “Talks with him are ongoing.”

Jitan Ram Manjhi-led Hindustani Aawam Morcha (HAM) and Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP) will contest one seat each.

Among the key seats that the BJP will be contesting from are Pashchim Champaran, Purvi Champaran, Aurangabad, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Maharajganj, Saran, Begusarai, Nawada, Patna Sahib, Patliputra, Aara, Buxar and Sasaram.

SC sends violation notices to Ramdev and Balkrishna

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court issued contempt notices to Patanjali managing director Acharya Balkrishna and yoga guru Baba Ramdev for deceptive ads, ordering them to appear in court in two weeks.

On February 27, a bench of justices Hima Kohli and Ahsanuddin Amanullah expressed unhappiness about noncompliance with its prior order. It requested a statement from Patanjali and Balkrishna about false ads released despite an undertaking in November of last year. The court included Ramdev as a party to the case after seeing his photograph in the advertisements.

The court issued the notices, questioning why contempt proceedings should not be instituted. “The proposed contemnor – managing director Acharya Balkrishna shall be present in court along with proposed contemnor Acharya Ramdev on the next date.”

The court referenced the Supreme Court’s Rules to Regulate Proceedings for Contempt (1975) and provisions of the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectional Advertisements) Act (1954). Section 3 of the Act forbids ads that claim to diagnose, cure, mitigate, treat, or prevent lifestyle disorders such as blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, asthma, cervical spondylitis, obesity, or heart disease.

Senior counsel Mukul Rohatgi, representing Patanjali, informed the court that Ramdev had nothing to do with Patanjali. He added that before showing cause, the court should allow him to be heard.

The bench stated that the 1954 Act’s provisions apply to all. “On the last occasion, there was evidence claiming that Baba Ramdev conducted a news conference after our injunction was issued. We’ve only given a show-cause notice. “Let him respond.”

The Indian Medical Association filed a court complaint against Patanjali for making false and deceptive promises about treating ailments and criticizing modern medicine.

On February 27, the court ordered Patanjali not to run any false advertisements on the medical efficacy of its products or against any other medical system. It demanded a response from Patanjali and Balkrishna, as well as the Union government, over the alleged deceptive ads.

The court also called out the government since its affidavit, filed late on Monday evening, was not on record. It was unable to locate a copy of the government’s response and ordered it to be recorded before the next deadline. The court told the administration that if its response is unacceptable, it will issue necessary orders.

Dell employees working from home will not be promoted

Dell had a hybrid work culture long before Covid struck. They have had the rule for over a decade. However, now the company is implementing strict return-to-office (RTO) policies.

Dell employees

In Short

  • Dell announces that remote workers will not be considered for promotions
  • The company is implementing strict return-to-office (RTO) policies, a departure from its previous hybrid work culture.
  • The decision has sparked controversy and discontent among Dell employees.

Dell, the popular laptop brand, has stirred controversy with its recent announcement regarding promotions for remote workers. In a memo, Dell informed its remote workers that they can continue working from home but they will not be considered for promotions. Notably, Dell had a hybrid work culture long before Covid struck. They have had the rule for over a decade. However, now the company is implementing strict return-to-office (RTO) policies, which is a clear departure from its previous stance.

In a memo circulated in February, accessed by Business Insider, Dell informed its employees of a return-to-office mandate, categorizing them as either “hybrid” or “remote” workers. While hybrid employees are required to spend a minimum of three days a week in an approved office, fully remote workers face significant limitations. According to internal documents obtained by Business Insider, remote workers will not be considered for promotion or be allowed to change roles within the company.

“Dell cared about the work, not the location. I would say 10% to 15% of every team was remote, “ a senior employee at Dell told the publication.Dell’s new rule has made a lot of Dell workers upset. One person who didn’t want to be named said, “Everyone at the company is talking about how much they don’t like it.” Some people are worried they won’t be able to move up in their jobs or have the same flexibility they had before, especially if they’ve been working from home for a long time.

“For remote team members, it is important to understand the trade-offs: Career advancement, including applying to new roles in the company, will require a team member to reclassify as hybrid onsite, “ the memo said.
This is a big change for Dell because the boss, Michael Dell, used to be all for people working from home. He said it was great and that it would keep happening. He even said other companies that forced people to come back to the office were doing it wrong.

But now Dell is saying it’s important for people to be in the office to come up with new ideas and make the company better. Even though lots of workers aren’t happy about it, Dell is sticking with the new rule.
This change is making people think about how work is changing, especially in the tech world where working from home has become really common. Dell’s decision to stop giving promotions to people who work remotely might mean other companies will start doing the same thing. We’ll have to wait and see what happens next at Dell. Right now, they haven’t said anything else about it.
