Gautam Gambhir’s ‘serious’ message to KKR ahead of 2024 season: ‘IPL isn’t about Bollywood and after party…’

Gautam Gambhir made a statement that the players should not focus on the off-field activities but look to find the ways to help the team bag another title.

Gautam Gambhir's

Kolkata Knight Riders mentor Gautam Gambhir has ‘serious’ advice for his players ahead of the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League. Gambhir, who led KKR to two titles during his tenure as captain, said that IPL is not about Bollywood or other glamour attached to it but an opportunity for players to express themselves in the toughest league in the world.

KKR, who won their last IPL title way back in 2014, signed Gambhir as their mentor as the veteran Indian opener left Lucknow Super Giants after spending two years with them for a homecoming in Kolkata. He was present with other members of KKR at the IPL 2024 players’ auction where the franchise splurged a record-breaking INR 24.75 crore to sign Mitchell Starc.

“I made it very clear on Day 1 that IPL for me, a serious cricket. It’s not about Bollywood, it’s not about you, it’s not about after party and stuff. It’s about going out there and playing competitive cricket and that’s the reason why I feel is the toughest league in the world because it is proper cricket,” Gambhir said on Star Sports.

The veteran batter pointed out the significance of the Indian Premier League on the world stage.

“It is probably closest to international cricket as compared to any other league and if you want to be known as a successful franchise, you should be able to deliver on the cricket field,” he added.

KKR are only the third franchise after Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians to win multiple IPL titles. However, things have not worked out well for them in the last couple of seasons where they finished seventh spot and failed to reach the playoffs.

Gambhir also talked about the loyal fanbase of Kolkata which has backed the team during their tough times.

“I think there are very passionate fans. We need to be honest to them. We need to try and probably bring that happiness on their smiles because I’ve always believed I think the most loyal fans have been fans from Kolkata because they’ve gone through a lot in the first three years of the IPL,” Gambhir said.

The two-time IPL-winning captain further made a statement that the players should not focus on the off-field activities but look to find the ways to help the team bag another title.

“Obviously it was the most high profile team as well. But I’ve always been a believer that ultimately it’s not about glamour. It’s about what we do on the cricket fields is all that matters and KKR should not be known for off field activities. They should be known for what we deliver on the cricket field,” concluded the KKR mentor.

Byju’s delays salaries of over 20000 employees, Raveendran blames…

Raveendran further said that a select few (four out of its 150+ investors) have “stooped to a heartless level, ensuring that we are unable to utilise the funds raised to pay your hard-earned salaries”.

Edtech major Byju’s is yet to process the salaries of its employees for the month of February as the amount raised through the rights issue is currently locked in a separate account “at the behest” of some key investors, its founder and CEO Byju Raveendran has told employees.

In a letter to the staff, accessed by IANS, Raveendran said that the rights issue (which is about $250-$300 million) has been successfully closed.

“However, I regret to inform you that we will still be unable to process your salaries. Last month, we faced challenges due to a lack of capital, and now we are experiencing a delay despite having funds,” he told more than 20,000 employees.

Raveendran further said that a select few (four out of its 150+ investors) have “stooped to a heartless level, ensuring that we are unable to utilise the funds raised to pay your hard-earned salaries”.

“At their behest, the amount raised through the rights issue is currently locked in a separate account. It is an agonising reality that some of these investors have already reaped substantial profits – in fact, one of them has made a staggering eight times their initial investment in Byju’s”.

The Bengaluru bench of National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) has directed Byju’s that the proceeds from the rights issue is to be kept in a separate account till the disposal of the case with investors.

Raveendran said that despite his best efforts, “we are left with no option but to confront the heart-wrenching reality that we are temporarily unable to provide you with the financial support you deserve”.

“We are striving to ensure that your salaries are paid by the 10th of March. We shall make these payments the moment we are permitted to do so as per law.”

A tourist driving in the early morning dark on the southern tip of Hawaii’s Big Island accidentally drove his rented Jeep off a cliff but was able to swim to shore until firefighters pulled him up with a rope and helicopter.

The man was treated for facial injuries and slight hypothermia after Sunday’s rescue, the Hawaii County Fire Department said in a news release.

Firefighters, police and the US Coast Guard responded to the cliffs of South Point in Naalehu at about 3.45 am on Sunday to a report of a swimmer in distress in the ocean, the release said.

He swam about 100 yards to shore at the bottom of a cliff the fire department estimated to be 50-60 feet.

Big Island resident Michael Moody was camping nearby to go spearfishing when the commotion from the rescue woke him up. By then, the tourist was already in the water, Moody said on Thursday.

The road there is dangerous for those who aren’t familiar with it, he said.

“It goes from a big major road to a dirt road,” he said. “And that’s only about 100 feet (30.48 meters) long, and then it gets really steep, and that’s only about 20 feet (6 meters) long. And then that’s the edge.”

Police told KITV the man, 27, was visiting from Canada.

“We have terrible things that happen because tourists don’t know what they’re doing,” Moody said.

The rescue required 16 people and could have been dangerous for those involved because of the high surf in the area, said Mayor Mitch Roth.

“A lot of resources,” Roth said. “It sounds like a careless act.”

While it’s known among locals as a fishing spot, it’s not a popular destination for tourists — especially at that hour, Roth said.

KKR coach reveals new Shreyas Iyer twist after batter axed from BCCI central contract: ‘He had an injury but…’

KKR coach, who feels Iyer will eventually claw his way back into Team India’s scheme of things, added a new twist to the saga

BCCI central contract

Kolkata Knight Riders Chandrakant Pandit is taken aback knowing that the captain of his Indian Premier League team Shreyas Iyer lost his place in the BCCI central contracts. Iyer, along with Ishan Kishan was dropped from the list after failing to adhere to the board’s mandate of playing domestic cricket. During their time away, neither Iyer nor Ishan turned up for their state teams in the Ranji Trophy, which did not sit well with the top brass, who then decided to pull the plug.

In Iyer’s case, what ticked off the selectors was that he apparently faked an injury to get himself out of playing Ranji Trophy. Iyer reported a back spasm but he was perfectly fine as claimed by a physio in the NCA, and once it was out in the public, all hell broke loose. However, Pandit, who feels Iyer will eventually claw his way back into Team India’s scheme of things, added a new twist to the saga that Iyer indeed was injured but he managed to recover in time.

“I will not say Shreyas must be included in a certain Grade, but he is definitely a player who can serve India in any format. He has had an injury issue, but it was solved. He is a good performer and even scored a century [105 against New Zealand in 2021 at Kanpur] on Test debut,” he told Mid-Day.

“In our future series, there may be some players who will not be in form, so naturally Shreyas will be there. He will play domestic cricket and can perform in the IPL. He is going to be useful for Indian cricket in any format.”

Pandit backs Iyer to come back strong

Pandit, who worked with Iyer closely last year has backed the India batter to come back strongly despite the setback. Pandit is sure that given the quality Iyer possesses, he deserves a place in India’s one of the top brackets – Shreyas belonged to the INR 3 crore bracket B. Pandit guarantees that this blow will only make Iyer fiercely dedicated and highly motivated to come back stronger.

“It’s surprising that Shreyas was not considered for the annual contracts, because he is India’s all-format player. We don’t know the reason, but I think he should walk into the pool of India’s contracted players. He could have definitely fitted in any Grade. Knowing Shreyas, I don’t think it will affect him. He will definitely fight and perform. He has that fighting spirit,” he said.

‘BCCI had discussions with Hardik Pandya’: How India all-rounder escaped Kishan-Iyer treatment at the last moment!

According to the top BCCI official, the apex board had discussions with Hardik Pandya. Here’s how Hardik escaped the ‘Kishan-Iyer treatment’.

There were no doubts about what Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer bring to the table as premier batters at Team India. However, the batting duo was deemed surplus to requirements when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced its annual central contracts on Wednesday. Iyer and Kishan were not part of the 30-player list for the 2023-2024 season. After Kishan and Iyer lost their BCCI contracts, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan shared an interesting post mentioning the curious case of all-rounder Hardik Pandya.

Contract extensions were not handed out to Iyer and Kishan for ignoring BCCI’s directive to play in the Ranji Trophy. Wicketkeeper-batter Kishan refused to show up for Jharkhand in the Ranji season. Mumbai’s Iyer was not available for the quarterfinal against Baroda following his exit from the Indian Test squad. Kishan’s teammate at the Mumbai Indians (MI), all-rounder Pandya, bagged a Grade A contract from the apex cricket board for the 2023-2024 season.

How Hardik Pandya escaped ‘Kishan-Iyer treatment’?

In his explosive tweet, Irfan suggested that Pandya was not judged on the same parameter. All-rounder Pandya only plays white-ball cricket for India. So, how did Pandya manage to escape the Kishan-Iyer treatment at the last moment? According to a report filed by the Indian Express, Pandya will play for Baroda in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20s and Vijay Hazare Trophy when he is not a part of the national side. As per a top BCCI official, Pandya vowed to ply his trade with Baroda in domestic tournaments when the all-rounder is not on national duty.

‘Playing Ranji Trophy out of equation for Pandya’

“We have had discussions with Pandya, who has been told to play domestic white-ball tournaments when he is available. At this stage, according to the assessment of the BCCI’s medical team, he is not in a position to bowl in red-ball tournaments. So playing Ranji Trophy is out of the equation for Pandya. But he has to play other white-ball tournaments if there are no India commitments. If not, he will miss out on a contract,” the official was quoted as saying.

What’s next for Hardik?

Recovering from an ankle injury ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Pandya returned to competitive cricket for the first time after the 2023 World Cup at the DY Patil tournament. Pandya represented the Reliance One side in the local tournament. Pandya picked up two wickets and leaked 22 runs in three overs for Reliance One. The newly-appointed captain of the Mumbai Indians franchise also trained individually in Vadodara. However, Pandya also made sure that his fitness is his being monitored at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). The 30-year-old last played for India against Bangladesh at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in 2023.
