ISPL T10 Day 6 Review: Bangalore Strikers bag maiden victory, Srinagar Ke Veer move to third spot after second win!

Bangalore Strikers registered their first win in the first-ever Super Over of the competition.

Mumbai, March 11: On Monday at the Dadoji Kondadev stadium, the Bangalore Strikers defeated the Tigers of Kolkata in the first Super Over of the season, marking their first-ever victory in the Indian Street Premier League T10 tennis ball cricket tournament.

In the Super Over, Bangalore Strikes batted first and scored 21 runs, with Mansoor KL contributing 8 and Thomas Dias scoring 13 in 3 balls. Munna Shaikh responded with two sixes, giving it his all, but he was unable to get his team over the finish line as they were limited to 13/2.

With the win, Bangalore Strikers were also guaranteed a mathematical chance to advance to the next round, while Tigers of Kolkata held onto second place with four points.

One of the main goals of the innovative Tennis Cricket League, Indian Street Premier League – T10, is to find, develop, and improve cricket players starting at the grassroots level. It aims to bring together the best local cricket talent in India, giving participants a wide platform to display their abilities.

Earlier, Bangalore Strikers chose to bowl first, and opener Fardeen Kazi was dismissed by Akash Gautam in the first legitimate ball of the innings. After that, the captain of the Kolkata Tigers, Prathamesh Pawar, launched a counterattack, scoring 25 runs off of 20 balls. Gautam then returned to take two wickets and end with figures of 3 for 5.

Following that, the Kolkata Tigers lost wickets at regular intervals. Ashiq Shamsu took three wickets for 21 runs, which kept the batting side to 86 for 9 in the allotted ten overs.

However, the Kolkata Tigers had been playing strong defense throughout the campaign, which made things challenging for their rival. The penultimate over had just 18 runs remaining since, other from Thomas Dias (27 of 22 balls), none of the other Bangalore Strikes batsmen could break loose.

Mansoor KL, a left-hander, did a great job scoring 16 runs off of the first four balls, but they were caught trying to go for another huge shot. Ankur Singh, the captain of the Bangalore Strikers, then maintained composure to swipe a single and send the game to extra time.

Later in the day, Srinagar ke Veer needed something special in the 50-50 over bowled by Vishwajit Thakur, as they looked vulnerable at 43 for 3 at the conclusion of the sixth over. The match was decided beyond a shadow of a doubt when Bhushan Gole (14 of 7 runs) and Ahmed Askari (9 of 7 balls) combined for 24 runs in an over and a 12-run bonus.

Rajesh Sorte, who was named Man of the Match, took three wickets for thirteen runs as Srinagar ke Veer earlier dismissed the Hyderabad team for 81 runs.

Indian Street Premier League: Rules and Format: Toss to Powerplay!

The main regulations that differ from regular cricket are the 50-over, street nine runs, and tape-ball overs, in addition to a special format of playing 11

Following comedian Munawwar Farooqi, who gained notoriety from Big Boss, taking out cricket superstar Sachin Tendulkar during the Indian Street Premier League (ISPL) T10, the league has gained immense popularity on the internet, particularly on social media platforms with short videos. However, that was only the first game on March 6, 2024.
The official tournament matches started the day following the celebrity-and former player-led unofficial game. The game’s regulations and the fact that street cricket is being played in a stadium have astounded and startled many.

Here are the major rules and format of the ISPL T10

Format

First of all the format- It is a 10-over-a-side Tennis ball cricket. However, there is provision for two overs of Tape Ball as well. We will discuss that later on.

Tip-Toe Toss

As the name suggests, the toss does not involve a coin, but rather the children’s game of tip-toe in which the two captains will tip-toe from a certain distance and whoever stamps on the tip of the toes of the other will win the toss and decides whether to bat or bowl.

Three overs of powerplay

In the 10-over game, there are not two but three overs of powerplay, In the first two overs, the number of players outside the 30-yard circle would be two. The third over of powerplay can be taken by the batting team at any moment they feel like, between overs three and nine. During the third over of the powerplay, three players can be allowed outside the 30-yard circle.

9 Street Runs

While in a normal cricket match, no matter how far the batter hits it outside the boundary the total number of runs remains six, but in an ISPL T10, if a better can hit the ball in the stands, it would account for nine runs instead of just six.

50-50 Over

Fifty is most probably the most unique feature of T10 where you are betting on your skills to give you one and a half times more than you score or lose half of what you have scored. So a batting team can take the 50-50 anytime they wish, however, the bowling team cannot ask for the Tape-ball over to be bowled during 50-50.

So in the 50-50 over the batting team will set a challenge of X number of runs and choose the bowler they want to bat against. Once that is done, if they score more than X, they will get X plus fifty per cent of X. So if the team had propped to get 16 runs and they got 18, they would get 18 plus fifty per cent of 16 which is eight. The total of that over would become 26 runs.

But if the team fails to get 16, and scores only 12 runs, then they would lose six runs from the 12 and the over would become a six-run over instead.

Tape-Ball Over

Popular in Pakistan street cricket, a Tape ball is nothing but a hard tennis ball taped entirely to make it swing a bit more than the usual tennis ball does. However, in ISPL T10, the tape-ball would not be hard tennis but usual tennis, with which the entire tournament is being played.

Playing XI and Substitutions

In the unique playing 11 rule, the team is given two substitutions in case of an injury. Also in the playing 11, a player each from the five zones of Indian cricket- North, South, East West and Central would have to be picked in the playing 11 alongside an Under-19 player from the pool of 16 players bought by each team in the auction.

Indian Street Premier League (ISPL 2024)

The Gully Cricket Tournament, also known as the Celebrity Premier League, officially began play yesterday, according to online rumors! T10 cricket is a new format that is being played in stadiums, having been around for about 20 years after T20 cricket. The Indian Street Premier League (ISPL) is the inaugural T10 tennis ball competition.

Six clubs from major Indian cities—Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, and Srinagar—are participating in the Indian Super League (IPL). From March 6 to March 15, 2024, these teams will play 19 games, all of which will be held in Mumbai.

In contrast to traditional cricket, the Indian Super League (IPL) seeks to transform the game by giving street cricket talent a global platform. It aims to develop the next generation of cricket players and infuse city cricket with a fresh degree of structure.

Essentially, the Indian Super League (IPL) is a tennis-ball cricket add-on that seeks to highlight street cricket players’ unbridled talent and enthusiasm on a large scale.

ISPL T10 Rules & Regulations

The ISPL, cricket’s latest addition, has brought several innovative concepts to the table. Let’s discuss about them little bit:

  • Tip Toss: The tournament has given a unique name to the toss, inspired by street cricket. For those familiar with street cricket rules, this is self-explanatory.
  • Powerplay Rules: Similar to limited-overs’ games, the first few overs are mandatory powerplays. In the ISPL, the mandatory powerplay consists of two overs, with one over designated as the batting powerplay. During the mandatory powerplay, only two fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle. For the batting powerplay, three fielders are permitted outside the circle. The batting powerplay of one over must be taken between overs 3-9.
  • Super Over: In the event of a tie, a Super Over, similar to a T20 match, will be played to determine the winner. This process continues until there is a clear winner.
  • 9 Street Runs: A unique concept introduced in this tournament awards nine runs to the batting team if the ball goes over the fence and lands among the audience, instead of the regular six in cricket.
  • 50-50 Over: Each team’s captain must select five bowlers from the playing XI who can bowl this over during an innings. In a 50-50 over, one team sets a score, and the other team must chase it down. Failure to do so results in a deduction from the final score. This was demonstrated in an exhibition match between Masters XI and Khiladi XI, where Masters XI failed to chase down a target of 16 runs, resulting in a seven-run deduction.
  • Tape Ball Over: While the entire match is played with a tennis ball, one or a maximum of two overs out of the 10 must be bowled with a tape ball. A tape ball is a tennis ball covered with tape, producing the same amount of swing in the air as a normal cricket ball. However, a tape-ball over cannot be used for a 50-50 over.
  • Fielding Restrictions: A maximum of five fielders are allowed outside the circle during the non-powerplay overs. Each team cannot have more than five fielders on the leg side and two behind the popping crease when a ball is being bowled.
  • Playing XI and Substitutions: Each team can select two substitutes during a match. An injured player can be replaced by an unsold player from the same zone. Every team in the inaugural ISPL can have a maximum of 16 players, with the playing XI including one player from each of the North, South, East, West, and Central zones. Additionally, a player under 19 years of age must also be included in the XI.
