Apple removes WhatsApp and Threads from App Store in China, says obligated to follow laws.

The Chinese government ordered Apple to remove WhatsApp and Threads from its App Store in China, citing national security issues.

To Put It Briefly

  • China’s App Store no longer features Meta Platforms’ WhatsApp and Threads.
  • The Chinese government issued the directives, citing concerns about national security.
  • Apple claims that it must abide by national regulations.

Apple said on Friday that it has taken Meta Platforms’ WhatsApp and Threads down from the Chinese App Store at the behest of the Chinese government, which used the excuse of national security concerns.

Checks by Reuters on Friday morning revealed that other Meta apps, including as Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger, were still accessible. You could download a ton of other well-known apps made by Western firms, like YouTube and X.

It was not immediately apparent how Chinese officials would have been concerned about the security of WhatsApp or Threads.

Apple sent a comment to Reuters via email stating that “the Cyberspace Administration of China ordered the removal of these apps from the China storefront based on their national security concerns.”

“We are obligated to follow the laws in the countries where we operate, even when we disagree,” the statement continued.

Apple was contacted by Meta after they declined to comment.

An inquiry for comment was not immediately answered by the Chinese Cyberspace Administration.

The manufacturer of iPhones indicated that Threads and WhatsApp may still be downloaded from its other stores. If they have an iCloud account there, tech-savvy Chinese customers can download the apps from Apple’s App Stores abroad.

The government order on WhatsApp and Threads, according to some experts on China’s internet sector, may be connected to a new regulation that was implemented in August of last year that mandates that all apps available in the country register with the government or face removal.

The restrictions went into force on April 1st, and companies had until the end of March to complete their registrations.

Apple has previously taken apps out of its China app store.

IPhone 16 Pro Max leaks: From longest-ever battery life to state-of-the-art camera, everything we know so far!

The iPhone 16 Pro Max is rumored to have a larger battery, improved camera with a larger sensor size, and potential display sizes of 6.27 and 6.86 inches. It may also feature the Apple A18 bionic chipset and up to 8GB of RAM.

IPhone 16 Pro Max

There is still plenty of time for the launch of the iPhone 16 series, considering that the iPhone 15 series was unveiled at the Wonderlust event just over 5 months ago. However, the rumour mills have been filled with one leak after another about Apple’s upcoming smartphone series and the iOS 18 operating system that will power it.

According to a post by Naver user “yeux1122” cited by Macrumors, the iPhone 16 Pro Max will feature a larger battery and is expected to deliver the “longest battery life ever seen on an iPhone”.

The report while citing supply chain sources notes that the iPhone 16 Pro Max will house a 5% larger battery than its predecessor. Although the actual increase in battery size may not be that large, the report notes that efficiency boosts can help improve the device’s battery performance.

Other rumours about the iPhone 16 Pro Max include the addition of the Apple A18 bionic chipset and up to 8GB of RAM. Moreover, the report claims that Apple has improved the manufacturing process for the Pro devices’ titanium frame while reducing costs.

An earlier report by Macrumors had also hinted that the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max may boast larger displays, potentially reaching unprecedented sizes of 6.27 and 6.86 inches, respectively, setting new benchmarks for screen real estate on iPhones.

Camera upgrades:

Meanwhile, another report from Sparrownews suggests that the iPhone 16 Pro Max will feature a 1/1.14-inch Sony IMX903 primary sensor. The report notes that the increase in sensor size will lead to a significant improvement in the detail and clarity of images, even in difficult lighting conditions.

The camera in iPhone 16 Pro models may also feature the use of 1MG+7P moulded glass-plastic modules, which are expected to lead to an improvement in the optical performance of the lens.

Another notable design shift is expected to be the introduction of a vertical camera layout in the base iPhone 16 series models. This move away from the diagonal camera arrangement seen in the iPhone 15 could pave the way for innovative features such as Spatial Video Recording.
