The disappointment in the Lucknow camp was evident as owner Sanjiv Goenka, captain KL Rahul and the rest of his teammates looked gutted following the loss, which hampered the team’s chances of reaching the IPL 2024 playoffs. LSG had headed to Hyderabad with high hopes of extending their perfect record against former champions SunRisers. However, SRH were on top of their game, limiting LSG to 165 and then chasing down the total in just 9.4 overs to set a new T20 record.

LSG slipped to the sixth spot in the points table and their Net Run Rate took a huge hit after the one-sided game in Hyderabad. Lucknow has 12 points in as many games, 2 fewer than third-placed SunRisers.

KL Rahul paid the price for being timid on the field. While he won the toss and opted to bat, lack of intent in the powerplay cost the visiting team. LSG managed just 27 runs and lost 2 wickets at the end of the powerplay while SunRisers, thanks to Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head’s ruthless knocks, reached 107 at the end of their powerplay. The 80-run difference between the two teams’ totals in the powerplay is also the highest in IPL history.

KL Rahul was criticized by a section of fans and pundits. The LSG captain played an uncharacteristically slow knock — 29 off 33 balls. Thanks to Ayush Badoni’s fifty and Nicholas Pooran’s 4quick-fire 48, LSG was able to post 165 and give their bowlers something to work with.

However, SRH openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma were in the mood to hit some big ones. Head hit 8 sixes and as many boundaries for his 30-ball 89 while young Abhishek smashed 6 sixes and 8 boundaries for his 28-ball 75. The duo added 167 runs for the opening partnership and steered SRH past the finish line in record time.

KL Rahul echoed the emotions of millions of cricket fans who watched SunRisers make a mockery of the 166-run target, acknowledging the incredible big-hitting show from Head and Sharma.

“I am lost for words,” he said while talking to the broadcasters after the one-sided contest.

“We have watched that kind of batting on TV. But this is unreal batting. Everything seemed to find the middle of the bat. Kudos to their skills. They have worked hard on their six-hitting skills. They didn’t give us a chance to know what the pitch played in the second innings,” he added.

LSG Owner will look to bounce back and return to winning ways when they take on Delhi at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on May 14. They will end the league stages with a trip to Mumbai on May 17. Lucknow Super Giants suffered a crushing defeat against Pat Cummins and Co. on Wednesday, which put them in a tricky spot in the playoffs race. It was a dismal performance from LSG bowlers Sanjiv Goenka and their top-order in batting as Sunrisers Hyderabad crushed them at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad.

LSG skipper KL Rahul won the toss and elected to bat first, but the decision backfired for them as they lost Quinton de Kock and Marcus Stoinis early in the powerplay, which put pressure on Rahul, and he went into his shell once again. The LSG captain failed to rise under the pressure and scored 29 runs off 33 balls. He looked sluggish throughout the innings as LSG scored just one boundary in the powerplay and hit 27 runs. Meanwhile, Ayush Badoni (55*) and Nicholas Pooran (48*) helped them post a fighting total of 165/4 on the scoreboard.

However, SRH openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma made a mockery of it and chased it down in just 9.4 overs. Head smashed 89*, and fellow left-hander Abhishek, who hit 75*, tore into the opposition attack to romp home with 10.2 overs to spare at their home in Uppal.

After the match, LSG owner Sanjeev Goenka was seen having an animated chat with skipper Rahul on the ground. It didn’t look a pleasant sight as Goenka looked miffed with the team’s performances, and many suggested he should have waited to get to the dressing room or a meeting room to have that conversation instead of doing it in a public place.

‘Lost for words’

Head and Abhishek showed no mercy and smashed the LSG Sanjiv Goenka bowlers all around the park to chase down the 166-run target in just 9.4 overs to script several records as LSG players had an embarrassing night.

“I’m lost for words. We’ve watched that batting on TV but that was unreal,” Lucknow skipper KL Rahul said of the bludgeoning by the Hyderabad openers.

“Everything was hitting the middle of the bat, kudos to their skill, they’ve worked very hard on their six-hitting.”

However, it will be crucial for LSG to get over the humiliating defeat quickly as they are still in the playoffs race and have to win their remaining two matches to make a case for themselves.

Kuldeep’s game-changing 17th over combined with Mukesh Kumar taking key wickets at the crucial points kept DC alive in their hunt for a spot in the playoffs following their 20-run win over RR at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

In the run chase, though RR lost their openers early, skipper Sanju Samson (86* in 46 balls, with eight fours and six sixes), Riyan Parag (27 in 22 balls, with a four and three sixes) and Shubham Dubey (25 in 12 balls with two fours and two sixes) kept RR in hunt but the dismissal of Sanju turned out to be a gamechanger that left RR short of a win.
Kuldeep, Mukesh Kumar, and Khaleel Ahmed took two wickets while Axar Patel and Rashikh Dar Salam got one each.
Kuldeep won the Player of the Match for his spell of 2/25.
DC has climbed to fifth with six wins, six losses, and 12 points. RR stays second with eight wins, three losses, and 16 points.

DC vs RR began the season on the wrong foot, losing four of its first five games. But the Rishabh Pant-led side soon clicked into gear, winning four of its next matches to put itself in contention for a playoff spot.

Delhi Capitals’ (DC) stop-start IPL 2024 campaign enters its final lap as it takes on the formidable Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium here on Tuesday.

DC began the season on the wrong foot, losing four of its first five games. But the Rishabh Pant-led side soon clicked into gear, winning four of its next matches to put itself in contention for a playoff spot.

But a heavy defeat against Kolkata Knights Riders in its last game has put DC back on its haunches, with its top-four chances now hinging on other results.

For Royals, the plot has been far more buoyant. Sanju Samson’s men have been on a roll, sitting second in the table with eight wins out of ten matches. A win against DC will help it get back on top of the standings, displacing Kolkata Knight Riders.

The mood in the Royals camp continues to be upbeat despite a nerve-wracking last-ball defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad in their last game.

Royals’ success this season has been built around their well-rounded batting unit. They currently boast four players – Riyan Parag, Samson, Yashavi Jaiswal, and Jos Buttler – with a 300+ run tally this season – more than any other team in the league.

Besides these four, the Royals also have the West Indian lower-order big-hitting duo of Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell and the up-and-coming Dhruv Jurel.

Royals’ batting brawn will fit well with the conditions at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, which has seen runs flow faster than any other venue in this IPL (11.85 runs per over – RPO).

DC too has some firepower in its rank, with the prominent ammunition being its young Aussie opener Jake Fraser-McGurk.

In the last two years, among batters to have scored at least 500 T20 runs, no one has a better strike rate than Fraser-McGurk (180.21). The 22-year-old has now set the IPL alight with his loose-limbed free-hitting, scoring 259 runs at a scarcely believable strike rate of 233.33.

On the bowling front too, the Royals have an advantage over the home side. While DC bowlers have leaked 10.24 RPO this season, Samson’s men have gone a shade under nine (8.99 RPO).

A major subplot to watch out for on Tuesday would be the matchup between Pant and Samson. While both keeper-batters cut India’s T20 World Cup squad, there is still no clarity regarding who will get the final nod in playing 11. A strong finish to the IPL season could just make the case for either of the two.

When these two sides met earlier in the season, in Jaipur, Rajasthan Royals squeezed out a nervy 12-run win. A similar result on Tuesday could all but ring the death knell for DC’s IPL campaign.
