Ab Ki Baar, KKR, Kolkata Club Wins its Third IPL Title after Crushing Sunrisers Hyderabad.

In the most unbalanced final in IPL history, KKR outsmarts SRH to win their first title since 2014, and Gambhir becomes the first captain and mentor to win the trophy.

Venkatesh Iyer was on strike, and the Kolkata Knight Riders dugout was on its feet as they were only one run away from a resounding eight-wicket victory in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 final. The left-hander paddle-swept for a single, setting up loud celebrations in the KKR camp.

IPL 2024 Final: Kolkata Knight Riders vs Sunrisers Hyderabad

The entire team came out to celebrate with the two Iyers, Venkatesh and Shreyas, and the owners were overjoyed in the stands as their wait for an IPL victory was finally over. The cameras kept hunting for mentor Gautam Gambhir, who was busy offering bear embraces to the entire group while smiling broadly. The DJ instantly turned to Chak De India, and the party began for the Kolkata Knight Riders, the IPL 2024 champions.

The IPL final has frequently been a rematch of Qualifier 1, and the title match of the 2024 edition was no exception. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) were the two most consistent teams during the regular rounds, but the Playoffs are a different beast.

Even the best in the business have found it difficult to dominate the knockouts, and SRH certainly faced KKR’s heat this year. Not once, but twice as after Qualifier 1 they were outsmarted by Shreyas Iyer & Co. in what turned out to be the most lopsided final in IPL history.

SRH just didn’t have enough runs on the board and became the first side to get bowled out in the final, that too without facing 20 overs. 113 – SRH’s third-lowest total in the IPL and the lowest total in an IPL final – was never going to pose any challenge to this KKR unit and mere formalities were left to be completed in the second innings of the match.

There was a consolation wicket of Sunil Narine early in the innings but just one-way traffic after that as Venkatesh Iyer and Rahmanullah Gurbaz put on 91 runs in lightning-quick time to put the side on home stretch.

Bowling masterclass

The batting, however, was never going to be a point of discussion today as the night was set-up by the bowlers. KKR served a bowling masterclass in the title clash and Mitchell Starc, the most expensive player in the league’s history, led from the front with a probing spell which put SRH on the mat.

Even before he bowled his first delivery, the quick was in the opposition’s head as Travis Head decided not to take strike. Starc had dismissed him the last time two sides met in Qualifier 1 and it was young Abhishek Sharma in the firing line now.

From the first delivery, there was enough movement and the fifth ball which came out of the left-armer’s hand was a ripper! Pitched on length, it swung away late and crashed into the stumps.

Abhishek stood shocked and the SRH dugout wore a worried look as celebrations began in the KKR camp. In consecutive games now, KKR clipped the wings of high-flying SRH openers and never allowed their innings to get any momentum whatsoever.

Head stayed away from strike vs Starc but was dismissed for a golden duck by Vaibhav Arora from the other end. Rahul Tripathi came and went, and the batters to follow had no answers to the versatile seamers of KKR. If Starc was moving them at a brisk pace, Arora had a nice natural angle into the right-hander and Harshit Rana was mixing his pace smartly.

There was just on respite from both ends and even when seamers were given a break, Andre Russell and the spin-twins – Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine – sustained pressure in the middle overs.

Pat Cummins & Co. kept losing wickets at regular intervals and never had a partnership going their way. It was just the second time in the IPL that six different bowlers picked a wicket. That’s how good KKR were in the title clash.

The only thing which didn’t go KKR’s way was the toss as they outplayed the opposition in every department to register a very comprehensive win.

Complete list of IPL champions and runners-up: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), captained by Shreyas Iyer, defeated Pat Cummins’ Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets on Sunday to win their third Indian Premier League (IPL) title. KKR had won the IPL crown in 2012 and 2014, and they dominated this season, finishing first in the league stage with nine wins from 14 games.

The Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings are the two teams that have won the IPL five times each. Sunrisers Hyderabad, Gujarat Titans, and Rajasthan Royals have all won once apiece.

“It was comprehensive,” said Kolkata skipper Shreyas Iyer, who also appeared in an IPL final for the Delhi Capitals in 2020, but lost to the Mumbai Indians.

“This is what we wanted of the players, and they stepped up. There is so much to be grateful for right now that it is difficult to put into words. There was no single person who led us here; it was a team effort, and it was a perfect season for us.”

Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to bat. But the Sunrisers were deflated inside the first seven overs as they limped to 47-4 against an impeccable attack of Starc, Harshit Rana (2-24) and Vaibhav Arora (1-24). Russell mopped up the lower order with 3-19 and Hyderabad was in danger of not reaching 100 before Cummins hit 24 off 19 balls and was the last man dismissed in the penultimate over.

“Russell has got a magic wand and he is looking towards me to bowl,” Shreyas Iyer said. “In the majority of the games he gave us breakthroughs.”

DC vs RR IPL 2024: Rishabh Pant and Samson in the Delhi Capitals’ matchup with the powerful Rajasthan Royals.

DC vs RR began the season on the wrong foot, losing four of its first five games. But the Rishabh Pant-led side soon clicked into gear, winning four of its next matches to put itself in contention for a playoff spot.

Delhi Capitals’ (DC) stop-start IPL 2024 campaign enters its final lap as it takes on the formidable Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium here on Tuesday.

DC began the season on the wrong foot, losing four of its first five games. But the Rishabh Pant-led side soon clicked into gear, winning four of its next matches to put itself in contention for a playoff spot.

But a heavy defeat against Kolkata Knights Riders in its last game has put DC back on its haunches, with its top-four chances now hinging on other results.

For Royals, the plot has been far more buoyant. Sanju Samson’s men have been on a roll, sitting second in the table with eight wins out of ten matches. A win against DC will help it get back on top of the standings, displacing Kolkata Knight Riders.

The mood in the Royals camp continues to be upbeat despite a nerve-wracking last-ball defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad in their last game.

Royals’ success this season has been built around their well-rounded batting unit. They currently boast four players – Riyan Parag, Samson, Yashavi Jaiswal, and Jos Buttler – with a 300+ run tally this season – more than any other team in the league.

Besides these four, the Royals also have the West Indian lower-order big-hitting duo of Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell and the up-and-coming Dhruv Jurel.

    DC vs RR IPL 2024

Also Read: Earthquake Today: 2.6 Magnitude Quake hits Uttarakhand Uttarkashi.

Royals’ batting brawn will fit well with the conditions at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, which has seen runs flow faster than any other venue in this IPL (11.85 runs per over – RPO).

DC too has some firepower in its rank, with the prominent ammunition being its young Aussie opener Jake Fraser-McGurk.

In the last two years, among batters to have scored at least 500 T20 runs, no one has a better strike rate than Fraser-McGurk (180.21). The 22-year-old has now set the IPL alight with his loose-limbed free-hitting, scoring 259 runs at a scarcely believable strike rate of 233.33.

On the bowling front too, the Royals have an advantage over the home side. While DC bowlers have leaked 10.24 RPO this season, Samson’s men have gone a shade under nine (8.99 RPO).

A major subplot to watch out for on Tuesday would be the matchup between Pant and Samson. While both keeper-batters cut India’s T20 World Cup squad, there is still no clarity regarding who will get the final nod in playing 11. A strong finish to the IPL season could just make the case for either of the two.

When these two sides met earlier in the season, in Jaipur, Rajasthan Royals squeezed out a nervy 12-run win. A similar result on Tuesday could all but ring the death knell for DC’s IPL campaign.

MI vs KKR: Mumbai Indians are looking to bounce back after a disappointing show with the bat while Kolkata Knight Riders are looking to get closer to the top of the table

After a disappointing batting performance in the last game, the Mumbai Indians will look to make amends against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday. The five-time former champions have had a tempestuous run in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 and are now hanging on by the thread of results from other teams.

Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) Points Table.

KKR, on the other hand, pulverized the Delhi Capitals in their last encounter with sharp performances in bowling and batting. The twice former winners at the tournament began by outclassing DC batters courtesy of some great bowling by Varun Chakravarthy who scalped three wickets that helped the team restrict their opponents to 153 runs. The chase was inclined in KKR’s interest from the very beginning as opener Phil Salt smashed 68 runs off 33 balls to propel his team to victory and climb to no.2 in the points table.

The titanic batting unit of MI consisting of Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Verma fell cheaply against the LSG. The hosts will look to get their act together to secure the crucial two points with their playoff chances already looking bleak.

    Pitch Report

The Wankhede Stadium is considered a suitable pitch for both batting and bowling. While the ground offers and quick outfield, the surface provides good bounce to the bowlers as well. The ground has hosted 113 runs so far where 61 matches have been won by team batting second. Therefore, skippers from both teams are expected to bowl first.

Both teams have met each other on 32 occasions over the years where Mumbai have heavily dominated the head-to-head with 23 wins in their favour.

    Did you know?

The lowest total recorded at the Wankhede Stadium was in 2008, during a clash between MI and KKR. The hosts blew the Knight Riders away for a score of 67 and then chased the total down inside their powerplay.
