‘BCCI had discussions with Hardik Pandya’: How India all-rounder escaped Kishan-Iyer treatment at the last moment!

According to the top BCCI official, the apex board had discussions with Hardik Pandya. Here’s how Hardik escaped the ‘Kishan-Iyer treatment’.

There were no doubts about what Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer bring to the table as premier batters at Team India. However, the batting duo was deemed surplus to requirements when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced its annual central contracts on Wednesday. Iyer and Kishan were not part of the 30-player list for the 2023-2024 season. After Kishan and Iyer lost their BCCI contracts, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan shared an interesting post mentioning the curious case of all-rounder Hardik Pandya.

Contract extensions were not handed out to Iyer and Kishan for ignoring BCCI’s directive to play in the Ranji Trophy. Wicketkeeper-batter Kishan refused to show up for Jharkhand in the Ranji season. Mumbai’s Iyer was not available for the quarterfinal against Baroda following his exit from the Indian Test squad. Kishan’s teammate at the Mumbai Indians (MI), all-rounder Pandya, bagged a Grade A contract from the apex cricket board for the 2023-2024 season.

How Hardik Pandya escaped ‘Kishan-Iyer treatment’?

In his explosive tweet, Irfan suggested that Pandya was not judged on the same parameter. All-rounder Pandya only plays white-ball cricket for India. So, how did Pandya manage to escape the Kishan-Iyer treatment at the last moment? According to a report filed by the Indian Express, Pandya will play for Baroda in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20s and Vijay Hazare Trophy when he is not a part of the national side. As per a top BCCI official, Pandya vowed to ply his trade with Baroda in domestic tournaments when the all-rounder is not on national duty.

‘Playing Ranji Trophy out of equation for Pandya’

“We have had discussions with Pandya, who has been told to play domestic white-ball tournaments when he is available. At this stage, according to the assessment of the BCCI’s medical team, he is not in a position to bowl in red-ball tournaments. So playing Ranji Trophy is out of the equation for Pandya. But he has to play other white-ball tournaments if there are no India commitments. If not, he will miss out on a contract,” the official was quoted as saying.

What’s next for Hardik?

Recovering from an ankle injury ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Pandya returned to competitive cricket for the first time after the 2023 World Cup at the DY Patil tournament. Pandya represented the Reliance One side in the local tournament. Pandya picked up two wickets and leaked 22 runs in three overs for Reliance One. The newly-appointed captain of the Mumbai Indians franchise also trained individually in Vadodara. However, Pandya also made sure that his fitness is his being monitored at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). The 30-year-old last played for India against Bangladesh at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in 2023.

Mamata Banerjee’s latest ‘BJP’ warning on Lok Sabha elections: ‘LPG cylinder price to be ₹2000 if…

Mamata Banerjee said the BJP government didn’t pay the MGNREGA dues.

Mamata Banerjee's

Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress president Mamata Banerjee has warned that the price of cooking gas can rise to ₹2,000 per cylinder if the Bharatiya Janata Party returns to power at the Centre after the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Mamata Banerjee was addressing a gathering in Bengal’s Jhargram district on Thursday.

Mamata Banerjee, a staunch critic of the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claimed the party will force the masses to return to collecting wood for fire.

“If the BJP wins the elections, they may hike the price of a cooking gas cylinder to ₹1,500 or ₹2,000. Then again, we will have to go back to the old practice of collecting wood to light a fire,” she said.

Mamata Banerjee also said that if the Central government doesn’t complete building houses under the Awas Yojana by April-end, the West Bengal government will start constructing them.

Banerjee said the BJP government didn’t pay the MGNREGA dues.

“I asked one youth whether he got the money for the 100 days’ work scheme. He said he got around ₹30,000. This was the amount that the central government had not paid people like him for the last two years. We have paid 59 lakh people their dues,” she added.

BJP vs Trinamool over Shajahan Sheikh

The BJP and the Trinamool Congress are currently locked in a pitched political battle over the arrest of TMC strongman Shajahan Sheikh, the main accused in the Sandeshkhali sexual assault case.

The Trinamool Congress has suspended the controversial politician for six years.

Reacting to the arrest, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose said on Thursday that his arrest is the “beginning of an end”.

“This is the beginning of an end. We have to put an end to the cycle of violence in Bengal. In parts of Bengal, the goons are ruling the roost. This must end, and the gangsters should be put behind bars,” he said.

After his arrest, TMC leader Derek O’Brien dared the BJP to suspend its leaders who have criminal cases against them.

“We have decided to suspend Shajahan Sheikh from the party for 6 years. As always, we walk the talk. We have set examples in the past, and we are doing that today. But we dare the BJP to suspend leaders, who have corruption cases against them and have several criminal cases against them,” he said.

Watch: Pitch invader feels the wrath of Alyssa Healy during WPL 2024 clash!

UPW captain Alyssa Healy was having none of it as a pitch invader caused a delay before the last ball of the MI innings.

WPL 2024 clash

Kiran Navgire and Grace Harris took much of the limelight during UP Warriorz’ seven-wicket win over the Mumbai Indians but their captain Alyssa Healy wasn’t too far behind. While Healy was instrumental in the chase, scoring 33 off 29 balls herself, the Australian wicketkeeper-batter caught the eyeballs with how she dealt with a pitch invader during the MI innings as well.

The incident happened just as Anjali Sarvani was getting ready to bowl the last ball of the MI innings. She had just got a wicket off the fifth ball and the new batter was ready to face up, but the umpire asked Sarvani to stop just as she was getting into her run up. That was because a man had run on to the field of play but Healy was having none of it. She could be seen tackling the invader to the ground before officials escorted him off the field. Australian media drew comparisons to how the late all-rounder Andrew Symonds and Australia women’s football icon Sam Kerr had also dealt with pitch invaders in a similar fashion.

MI, who are the defending champions, were restricted to a score of 161/6 which UPW chased down in 16.3 overs. Healy (33 runs from 29 balls) and Kiran Navgire (57 runs from 31 balls) opened for the Warriorz and made a solid 94-run partnership.

The Healy-Navgire duo gave the UP-based franchise a fiery start while chasing a target of 162 runs. Healy smashed 5 fours with a strike rate of 113.79. Meanwhile, Navgire slammed his fifty after playing just 25 balls. She smashed 6 fours and 4 sixes. However, the player’s knock had to come to an end after Amelia Kerr made the first breakthrough of the game after she dismissed Navgire in the 10th over.

Issy Wong scalped the second wicket of the inning after she dismissed Tahlia McGrath (1 run from 4 balls) in the 11th over. Wong’s spell helped Mumbai to make a comeback in the game after she removed skipper Healy in the 10th over. Even though the Mumbai-based franchise picked up two quick wickets but still failed to take control of the game.

After losing three wickets, Grace Harris (38* runs from 17 balls) and Deepti Sharma (27* runs from 20 balls) took charge of the batting lineup as they chased the target without any difficulty. Harris smashed 6 fours and 1 six with a strike rate of 223.53. Meanwhile, Deepti hit 4 fours.

According to sources, Sakshi’s friends had been trying to reach her since morning, but there was no response. On going to her locked room, they saw her body through the window. An alert was raised and the warden and security guards rushed to the spot, and forced the door open. Unfortunately, the student was already dead. No suicide note was found, they added.

DGCA slaps Air India with ₹30 lakh penalty following 80-year-old passenger’s death at Mumbai airport!

Aviation regulator DGCA slaps ₹30 lakh fine on Air India for wheelchair incident involving 80-year-old passenger at Mumbai airport.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has imposed a financial penalty of ₹30 lakhs on civil airline Air India following a 16 February incident of non-availability of a wheelchair to an 80-year-old passenger who collapsed and died after walking from the aircraft to the airport terminal at Mumbai.

According to reports, an octogenarian Air India passenger had requested for a wheelchair at the Mumbai airport. However, he decided to walk as he was asked to wait due to heavy demand for wheelchair, died after collapsing at the time of immigration process.

The incident happened at the airport on February 12 after the passenger landed in an Air India flight from New York.

“Air India did not inform about any action taken by the airline against the erring employee(s) and the airline also failed to submit any corrective actions taken to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future,” a DGCA official informed.

Earlier this month, DGCA issued a show cause notice to the carrier, which submitted its response to the watchdog on February 20.

The airline submitted that the elderly passenger wished to walk along with his wife who was on a wheelchair too, rather than wait for another wheelchair.

“An advisory has also been issued to all airlines to ensure that an adequate number of wheelchairs are available for passengers who require assistance during embarking or disembarking from the aircraft during their journey,” DGCA said.

In a statement on Friday, Air India said that due to heavy demand for wheelchair, it had requested the passenger to wait for an airline staff-assisted wheelchair but he opted to walk along with his spouse.

“In an unfortunate incident, one of our guests flying from New York to Mumbai on February 12, fell ill while proceeding to clear immigration with his wife, who was on wheelchair,” the Air India said.

As advised by the airport doctor attending to him after taking ill, the airline said the passenger was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he was declared to have passed away.

According to Air India, it is in constant touch with the family members of the bereaved, extending necessary assistance, and added that it has a clearly laid down policy to offer wheelchair assistance to all passengers who pre-book the same.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai airport saw fewer delays in flight arrivals following recent measures to resolve congestion and delays, bringing relief to thousands of travellers transiting India’s second-busiest airport daily.

North Korea first spy satellite is ‘alive’, can manoeuvre, expert says!

After two fiery failures, North Korea’s successfully launched the Malligyong-1 satellite into orbit in November.

North Korea’s first spy satellite is “alive”, space experts said on Tuesday, after detecting changes in its orbit that suggested Pyongyang was successfully controlling the spacecraft – although its capabilities remain unknown.

After two fiery failures, North Korea successfully launched the Malligyong-1 satellite into orbit in November. Pyongyang’s state media claimed it has photographed sensitive military and political sites in South Korea, the United States and elsewhere, but has not released any imagery. Independent radio trackers have not detected signals from the satellite.

“But now we can definitely say the satellite is alive,” Marco Langbroek, a satellite expert at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, wrote in a blog post.

From Feb. 19-24, the satellite conducted manoeuvres to raise its perigee, or the lowest point in its orbit, to 497 km from 488 km (308.8 miles from 303.2 miles), Langbroek said, citing data from the U.S.–led Combined Space Operations Center.

“The manoeuvre proves that Malligyong-1 is not dead, and that North-Korea has control over the satellite – something that was disputed,” he said.

South Korea’s Defence Ministry said it too had assessed that the satellite was in orbit, but said it would not comment further on individual analyses. On Monday, Defence Minister Shin Won-sik said the satellite was not showing any signs of performing other tasks or engaging in reconnaissance.

“While we indeed currently cannot be sure whether the satellite does successfully take imagery, it at least performs orbital manoeuvres, so in that sense it is functional,” Langbroek wrote of Shin’s comments.

The orbit-raising manoeuvre was a surprise as the presence of an onboard propulsion system was unexpected and previous North Korean satellites never manoeuvred, he said.

“Having the capacity to raise the satellite’s orbit is a big deal,” Langbroek said.

That meant that as long as there was fuel in the satellite, North Korea could prolong the satellite’s lifetime by raising its altitude when it got too low because of orbital decay, he concluded.

Harvard astronomer and orbital tracker Jonathan McDowell said the satellite appeared to be correcting its position in space as it moved to where it was shortly after launch, instead of making a hostile move toward another country’s satellite – a capability for which he said the satellite was “much too small.”

The United States, Russia and China, the world’s top space powers, have in recent years launched satellites increasingly capable of manoeuvring and inspecting other orbital objects as space grows as a critical arena for communications, commerce and military activity.

But companies and countries often manoeuvre their satellites to improve the object’s position in orbit. A variety of other reasons to manoeuvre include dodging other satellites or a piece of space debris or – depending on the satellites’ capability – wading above a region of interest on Earth.

U.S. Space Command, which tracks all active objects in orbit and sometimes assesses their function, did not immediately comment on the North Korean satellite.

Nuclear-armed North Korea has vowed to launch three more spy satellites in 2024.
