Amid Himachal Crisis, Navjot Singh Sidhu slams 6 Congress MLAs; urges for ‘purge’ in party

Himachal political crisis: Six MLAs from the Congress party cross-voted in the Rajya Sabha polls, causing a political turmoil in the state.

Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on the six party lawmakers who voted in favour of the BJP candidate in the Rajya Sabha polls in Himachal Pradesh, causing political turmoil in the hill state. Calling for an “assessment of assets and liabilities” of the party, the former Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief said that the defeat of senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi in the Rajya Sabha elections is not just his loss but a larger one.

“The Himachal fiasco calls for an assessment of assets and liabilities for The Grand Old Party ??? …. “Masqueraders” on plum posts covertly dancing to the tunes of agencies like CBI, ED and IT have spelt dooms day for us many a times!,” Sidhu wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

According to the Congress leader, it is essential to purge the party of those who “prioritize personal gain over the collective good” as their actions “inflict profound wounds on the party’s existence”.

“…The wounds might heal but the mental scars will remain…Their gain is the congress worker’s biggest pain…Loyalty is not everything but the only thing,” he added.

Even though the Congress holds 40 seats in the 68-member assembly in Himachal Pradesh, the state government is facing a crisis after six MLAs crossed sides and are learnt to be in touch with the BJP. Currently, the BJP holds 25 seats, while the remaining three seats are held by independents.

The surprising defeat of Congress in the Rajya Sabha polls has prompted the BJP to challenge Himachal CM Sukhvinder Singh Sikhu-led government and demand a show of strength in the House.

Meanwhile, Sukhu has refuted all reports of him resigning from the post, asserting that he will prove a majority in the House.

“Neither anyone asked for my resignation nor have I presented my resignation to anyone. We will prove the majority. We will win, the people of Himachal will win,” the Himachal CM said.

He added, “I am not someone who will get scared and I can say this with guarantee that the Congress is going to win…The BJP is spreading rumours of my resignation. The Congress is united.”

In a boost to India’s defence capabilities, the country’s leading private sector defence manufacturer Adani Defence & Aerospace launched two facilities dedicated to the production of ammunition and missiles in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said, “This is a moment of great pride. The facility is a testimony to Uttar Pradesh’s transformation into an industrial powerhouse and our commitment to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. Adani Defence & Aerospace has made the largest investment in the Uttar Pradesh Defence Corridor, which will play a crucial role in developing a vibrant defence ecosystem. He praised Adani Defence & Aerospace’s substantial investments and dedication to indigenizing critical defence technologies, signaling a significant milestone in India’s journey towards self-sufficiency in the defence sector.

“Recent geopolitical events have reemphasized the need for a reliable supply from internal sources for ammunition in preparedness for a long-drawn conflict. This complex is a major milestone in India’s journey towards self-reliance in the defence sector,” he said.

₹100 Tablet to Prevent Resurgence of Cancer developed by Tata Memorial Centre!

Tata Memorial Hospital through its new research has developed a ₹100 tablet to reduce the side effects of chemotherapy and prevent resurgence of cancer.

Cancer medicine

Finding cancer cure has so far been an elusive target but it may not be too far with a groundbreaking research by Tata claiming to have found the potential drug which can not only keep the cancer cells from resurfacing but also come at an affordable price of ₹100 a tablet. Tata Memorial Hospital through its new research has developed a ₹100 tablet to reduce the side effects of cancer treatment therapy as well as to prevent resurgence or relapse of cancer, said Dr Rajendra Badwe, Director of the Tata Memorial Centre in an interview with NDTV.

Dr Badwe said the doctors at Tata are working for almost a decade on this tablet which is likely to get approval from Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) in June-July for reducing side effects of cancer treatment. The senior doctor said the tablet once approved can help reduce side effects of treatments like chemotherapy by 50 per cent and possibility of cancer relapse by 30%, which is by far the cheapest and the most effective cancer treatment so far, as per the institute.

A decade-long research study by Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH) doctors found that dying cancer cells release cell-free chromatin particles after chemotherapy and radiotherapy that can turn healthy cells into cancerous ones. As per the study, the pro-oxidant combination of resveratrol and copper helped in destroying the chromatin and regulating toxicity in patients undergoing chemotherapy.

We did a little experiment in which we took human breast cancer cells and implanted them in immunodeficient mice,” said Dr Indraneel Mittra, the onco-surgeon-turned-scientist who led the TMH doctors in the study. “Within six weeks, a small tumour was formed. We divided the mice into three categories according to the cancer treatment—chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery. We found that all the three treatments increased chromatin in the mouse brain.”

“We found that a combination of resveratrol and copper helped in destroying chromatin. We used the combination to be given orally in our studies and found that it prevented metastasis,” said Dr Mittra. “We now need to test it on humans to understand how best we can improve the outcome of our patients, and if possible, the outcome of the general population of India,” said Dr Rajendra Badwe.

Recently Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russian scientists are close to developing cancer vaccines that would be soon available to patients

“The research delves into the mechanism of metastasis that we were not able to uncover for so long. What qualities the cells have that metastasis can happen and what leads to metastasis, we have understood both these things through this research,” Dr Badwe told NDTV.

However, to reap benefits of this new treatment for preventing resurgence of cancer, people may have to wait for a couple of years as Dr Badwe added that the trials will take at least 5-6 years.

‘Haven’t quit’: Himachal Chief Minister tamps down Congress revolt talk

Himachal Pradesh minister and Congress leader Vikramaditya Singh has quit following the party’s stunning loss on the lone Rajya Sabha seat to the BJP. Meanwhile, the BJP has sought a floor test after claiming that the Congress government lost its majority.

Vikramaditya Singh

In Short

  • Sukhvinder Sukhu says hasn’t quit as Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister
  • Himachal Congress minister Vikramaditya Singh resigns, says ‘MLAs ignored’
  • BJP seeks floor test, claims Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu lost mandate

A defiant Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Wednesday rejected speculation that he would step down as Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister as disgruntled Congress legislators threatened a rebellion and the BJP called for a floor test.

“I want to make it clear that I haven’t resigned. The Congress government will complete five years. We are fighters and we will prove our majority,” Sukhu told reporters.

As its troubles deepened, the ruling Congress was dealt another blow by the resignation of powerful minister Vikramaditya Singh. Vikramaditya Singh, son of former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, said the party MLAs’ views “were ignored”.

The political drama in the hill state escalated as 15 BJP MLAs, including Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur, were expelled from the Himachal Pradesh Assembly on Wednesday following their demand for a floor test after the ruling Congress lost the lone Rajya Sabha seat in the hill state.

CRISIS IN HIMACHAL PRADESH AFTER RAJYA SABHA POLLS:

  • Senior BJP leader and Leader of Opposition in the Himachal assembly Jairam Thakur, along with party MLAs, met Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday. They sought a floor test, claiming that Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu had lost the mandate to rule. Speaking to reporters after his meeting with the Governor, Jairam Thakur said, “BJP candidate Harsh Mahajan won the Rajya Sabha elections. Currently, the Congress government has lost the moral right to stay in power.”

After stepping down as minister, Congress leader Vikramaditya Singh said the outcome of the Rajya Sabha polls, in which the ruling Congress lost to the BJP, was a result of the system prevailing in the government since its formation last year. He also stated he was dismayed by the party’s slight to his father, the late Virbhadra Singh.

“Someone who was the Chief Minister of the state for 6 times, due to whom this government was formed in the state – they could not find a small space for his statue on Mall Road. This is the respect this government has shown to my late father,” he said.

  • Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is taking charge of the crisis in Himachal Pradesh. In a briefing to Congress President Kharge, she discussed the state’s situation. She has been in touch with several MLAs, including Vikramaditya Singh who spoke to her yesterday. Gandhi is actively monitoring the developments and maintaining regular contact with Sukhvinder Sukhu and Rajiv Shukla.
  • In a stunning upset for the ruling Congress in Himachal Pradesh, the BJP emerged victorious. The BJP’s Harsh Mahajan defeated Congress’s Abhishek Manu Singhvi in a closely contested battle that ended in a tie, with both candidates securing 34 votes each, indicating significant cross-voting within the Congress ranks.
  • The victory of the BJP candidate, with the support of six Congress lawmakers and three independents previously backing the government, has left Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on shaky ground. The Congress high-command has dispatched senior leaders Bhupinder Singh Hooda and D K Shivakumar to engage with the disgruntled MLAs.
  • The six MLAs had left Shimla for Haryana after casting their votes in the Rajya Sabha polls. On Wednesday, the lawmakers, rumoured to be in touch with the BJP, were being brought back to the Himachal capital by chopper.
  • The BJP secured a decisive victory in Uttar Pradesh, winning all eight Rajya Sabha seats it contested. The opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) suffered a setback, with one of its three nominees facing defeat due to cross-voting by some legislators.
  • Amid concerns over cross-voting and resignations, SP President Akhilesh Yadav warned of strict action for going against the party line. BJP Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya claimed Yadav made a mistake by fielding his third candidate, and he did not have the numbers.
  • Despite the turmoil, the ruling Congress managed to secure three out of four Rajya Sabha seats in Karnataka. Elected members include Ajay Maken, G C Chandrasekhar, and Syed Naseer Hussain, all from the Congress, along with Narayansa K Bhandage of the BJP.Karnataka also witnessed its share of cross-voting chaos – BJP MLA S T Somashekar voted for Ajay Maken, while another legislator abstained.
  • The Rajya Sabha polls in three states on Tuesday witnessed a whirlwind of political drama as cross-voting shaped the outcome – solidifying the BJP’s standing ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, and leaving the opposition INDIA bloc in a more precarious position than before.
