Wanindu Hasaranga breaks Malinga’s record to establish a new Sri Lankan record as Sri Lanka wins the series against Afghanistan!

In recognition of his overall performance, Angelo Mathews was named Player of the Match (POTM). His rapid-fire innings of 42 from 22 balls and his 2/9 stats claimed were crucial to Sri Lanka victory.

Sri Lanka

Skipper Wanindu Hasaranga claimed his first-ever T20I series win since being appointed full-time captain as Sri Lanka made mincemeat of Afghanistan in the second game of the three-match series by 87 runs on Monday (February 19).

Sri Lankan batters used the batting-friendly strip at the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium after the Afghan skipper Ibrahim Zadran won the toss and sent them in.

Openers Pathum Nissanka (25 runs off 11 deliveries) and Kusal Mendis (23 off 14 balls) got the hosts off to a blistering start, putting the pressure right back on the tourists up front.

The Sri Lankan pair added 45 runs inside four overs before Nissanka was trapped in front of his stumps by Azmatullah Omarzai. Mendis was quick to follow his partner to the dugout as he fell prey to Fazalhaq Farooqi two deliveries later.

The home side lost three more wickets without adding much to the scoreboard and was reduced to 121/5 in 14.2 overs. However, things took an amazing turn for the Wanindu Hasaranga-led side as Sadeera Samarawickrama (51 off 42 balls) and Angelo Mathews came together in the middle.

The duo added 66 off just 34 balls to propel the Lankan Lions to 187/6 in 20 overs. Mathews was the star of the show as he smashed four sixes and two fours and batted at a jaw-dropping strike rate of 190.90.

Afghanistan’s chase wobbled early and they were struggling to keep up with the asking rate, having lost half their side inside five overs.

The Sri Lankan bowlers were disciplined in their approach and didn’t offer any freebies for the tourists to cash in. A 39-run stand between Nabi and Karim Jant helped the visitors salvage their pride to some extent before the Lankan bowling attack came roaring back to restrict them to 115 in 17 overs.

Wanindu Hasaranga moves past Lankan legend Lasith Malinga

Skipper Hasaranga became the fastest Sri Lankan to 100 T20I wickets as he shattered Lasith Malinga’s record. Hasaranga achieved the feat in his 63rd T20I outing whereas it took Malinga 76 T20Is snare 100 scalps in the format.

Hasaranga is the second-fastest to scale the milestone and is behind Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan who bagged 100 T20I poles in just 53 games.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor discloses huge tax evasion in capital, urges for probe

Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, in a letter to Chief Minister Kejriwal, has revealed that Delhi holds the dubious distinction of having the highest tax evasion in India.

In Short

  • Delhi Lieutenant Governor reports highest tax evasion in capital
  • 483 bogus firms detected, evading Rs 3,028 crore tax, he says
  • VK Saxena urges inquiry headed by Finance Minister Sitharaman

In a revelation, the Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Delhi, VK Saxena, pointed out that the national capital has a dubious record of the highest tax evasion across the states and Union Territories in the country.

In a letter to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, LG Saxena exposed the alarming state of tax governance in the city.

“Delhi has achieved the ignominious distinction of recording the highest tax evasion in the country,” the Lieutenant Governor’s letter stated.

He further provided the damning statistics – 483 bogus firms have been detected, accounting for a whopping Rs. 3,028 crore of tax evasion.

To put this in perspective, Delhi’s tax evasion outstrips by Rs 827 crore, the state placed second in this notorious list.

Furthermore, Saxena implied the possible involvement of the local GST Department’s officials in these malpractices.

He urged Kejriwal to initiate a meticulously planned inquiry into the matter, headed by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, to get to the bottom of such a rampant amount of tax evasion and its root cause.

The fact that the national capital leads the chart of tax evasion among all states and Union Territories is certainly unsettling.

Saxena asserted that this hints at a poor state of tax governance in the city, seriously undermining the public’s faith in the system.

Some OnePlus 12R users can get a full refund on their phones but only for a limited time

OnePlus has announced a limited-time opportunity for OnePlus 12R buyers to receive a full refund due to an inadvertent error in the handset’s storage configuration listing. Here are the details, including when this offer will expire.

In Short

  • OnePlus has announced full refund for the OnePlus 12R smartphone.
  • Customers who want to claim the refund have time until March 16.
  • The OnePlus 12R was recently announced in India for Rs 39,999.

OnePlus has announced a limited-time opportunity for OnePlus 12R buyers to receive a full refund due to an inadvertent error in the handset’s storage configuration listing. Customers who opted for the higher storage variant (256GB) of the OnePlus 12R are eligible for this refund offer, valid until mid-March. Here is everything you need to know.

The confusion arose when OnePlus accidentally advertised the recently launched OnePlus 12R with UFS 4.0 storage instead of the intended UFS 3.1 specification, aligning with the base storage option. The OnePlus 12R, which was introduced alongside the flagship OnePlus 12 model, boasts of impressive specifications including a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, a top-notch screen, a massive battery with fast charging support, and more.

In a statement issued by OnePlus President and COO Kinder Liu, it was clarified that customers who purchased the 256GB storage variant of the OnePlus 12R have until March 16 to initiate a refund request. Liu emphasized that the company’s customer service teams are fully briefed on the matter, ready to assist buyers through the refund process.

Those who want to claim the refund offer will have to reach out to OnePlus’ customer service to discuss the file system discrepancy and initiate the return process. This one-month refund window provides affected customers with an opportunity to rectify the situation and obtain full reimbursement for their OnePlus 12R purchase. This is a really good decision as many companies fail to provide a resolution to customers’ issues.

To recall, the OnePlus 12R was launched in India with a starting price of Rs 39,999 in India. It runs on Android 14-based OxygenOS 14. The device packs a 6.78-inch LTPO 4.0 AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection. The new 5G phone is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, which is backed by up to 16GB of RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage.

In terms of imaging capabilities, the OnePlus 12R features a 50-megapixel Sony IMX890 sensor primary camera. It is accompanied by an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera and a 2-megapixel macro camera. Additionally, you will see a 16-megapixel front-facing selfie camera as well. There is also a typical 5,000mAh battery with 100W SuperVOOC charging support. It is worth noting that OnePlus is one of the few top brands that is still bundling a charger in the retail box with all smartphones. And the OnePlus 12R is not an exception here. You get a fast charger in the box along with the device.

“They can take the next available flight back home,” the former player says, dismissing England’s prospects of retaliating with a Bazball strategy!

Former India opener Kris Srikkanth has criticized England’s Bazball approach, saying that it won’t work if they fail to adapt to the conditions in India. Srikkanth, known for his fearless approach to batting, ruled out any chances of England fighting back in the series even as the touring side remained defiant after the humbling loss in the 3rd Test in Rajkot. The Bazball era dealt England their most crushing blow as they suffered a 434-run defeat in the 3rd Test.

Srikkanth said England lack the talent to challenge India in Indian conditions, pointing fingers at the inexperienced spin-bowling attack.

“I doubt the practical success of promoting Bazball and similar theories. Have these strategies proven effective, especially in the Ashes? To be honest, no tactic can succeed if the team continues to perform poorly. The hype surrounding the Bazball theory seems unwarranted, as it requires the skill to bat effectively in specific conditions. Additionally, successful bowling demands genuine talent,” he said on his YouTube show ‘Cheeky Cheeka’.

England stunned India in the first Test of the ongoing 5-match series in Hyderabad, but the tourists have lost steam, losing the second and third Tests by huge margins. The Rajkot Test defeat, by a record margin of 434 runs, doused the hype around Bazball with even former England cricketers taking a swipe at the popular approach that brought England plenty of success before they arrived in India.

“If feasible, they could take the next available flight back home. However, they are obligated to participate in the remaining two Tests,” he jokingly said when asked about England’s chances of fighting back in the series.

Kris Srikkanth added that England need to look at adapting to situations and not remain bullish about their style of play if they are to recover from the Rajkot Test hammering.

“Yes, their batting performance in the first innings was commendable. Ollie Pope delivered an exceptional innings, and I acknowledge England’s credit for that. However, I doubt the sustainability of the Bazball approach in the long term. Simply going out and attempting to hit every ball may work for players like Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes, but not everyone can execute that style successfully,” he added.

With Ben Stokes remaining defiant about their chances to win the series, the two teams will meet in the 4th Test in Ranchi from Friday.

Students to get option of appearing in 10th, 12th board exams twice from 2025-26: Pradhan!

One of the objectives of the NEP 2020 is to reduce the academic stress on students, Pradhan said on Monday after launching the PM SHRI scheme in Chhattisgarh.

Pradhan

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has said students will get an option of appearing for 10th and 12th class board examinations twice a year from the academic session 2025-26.

One of the objectives of the new National Education Policy (NEP), unveiled in 2020, is to reduce the academic stress on students, Pradhan said on Monday after launching the PM SHRI (Prime Minister Schools for Rising India) scheme in Chhattisgarh under which 211 schools of the state will be upgraded.

The function was held at the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay auditorium in Raipur.

Highlighting the concept of introducing 10 bag-less days in school every year, the minister stressed on engaging students with art, culture and sports, among other activities.

On the Centre’s plan under the NEP 2020, Pradhan said from the 2025-26 academic session, students will get an opportunity to appear for the 10th and 12th class board exams twice.

According to the New Curriculum Framework (NCF) announced by the Ministry of Education in August last year, board examinations will be held at least twice a year to ensure students have enough time and opportunity to perform well. They will also get the option to retain the best score.

Pradhan asked students present at the function if they were happy with the decision, and told them to keep the best marks obtained after appearing in both the exams.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji’s vision through the NEP is to keep students stress-free, enrich them with quality education, keep students linked with culture and prepare them for the future. This is the formula for making India a developed country by 2047,” he said.

Pradhan slammed the previous Congress government in the state, saying education was not its priority, but the key sector has received utmost importance after the BJP came to power and new Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai assumed office in December last year.

In the first phase of the PM SHRI scheme, 211 schools (193 elementary level and 18 secondary ones) will be upgraded in Chhattisgarh on a ‘hub and spoke’ model by spending ₹2 crore on each of them, the Union minister said.

Under the model, the mentor institution, called the ‘hub’, will be centralised and have the responsibility of guiding the mentee institution through the secondary branches, the ‘spoke’, via services provided to the mentee for self-improvement.

As per a request made by Chhattisgarh’s School and Higher Education Minister Brijmohan Agrawal, more secondary and higher secondary schools will be covered under the scheme in its next phase, Pradhan said.

He said India will bid to host the 2036 Olympics Games and he expects that 10 per cent of medals for the country in the quadrennial event should come from Chhattisgarh athletes and preparations for it should start from this year itself.

Chief Minister Sai, minister Agrawal and other senior officials were present at the function.

Putin gifts North Korea’s Kim Jong Un Russian-made car!

The Russian-made car was delivered to Kim’s top aides by the Russian side on Feb. 18, official KCNA news agency said.

Putin gifts North Korea's Kim Jong

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has received a car from Russia’s President Vladimir Putin as a gift “for his personal use,” official media reported on Tuesday, in what could be a violation of U.N. ban that Moscow had joined to adopt against Pyongyang.

The two countries have forged closer ties since Kim and Putin met in September and pledged to promote exchanges in all areas as their international isolation deepened over Russia’s war in Ukraine and the North’s nuclear weapons development.

The Russian-made car was delivered to Kim’s top aides by the Russian side on Feb. 18, official KCNA news agency said.

Kim’s sister “courteously conveyed Kim Jong Un’s thanks to Putin to the Russian side, saying that the gift serves as a clear demonstration of the special personal relations between the top leaders,” KCNA said.

The report did not describe the car or how it was shipped from Russia. Kim is believed to be an avid automobile enthusiast and has a large collection of luxury foreign vehicles believed to be smuggled in.

In September, while visiting Russia’s space launch station in the far east, Kim inspected Putin’s presidential Aurus Senat limousine and was invited by the Russian leader to climb into the back seat.

Kim himself drove to the site in a Maybach limousine brought onboard a special train he travelled in from Pyongyang.

That vehicle and others he had been seen in including several Mercedes limousines, a Rolls-Royce Phantom and a Lexus sports utility vehicle fall under luxury goods that U.N. Security Council resolutions ban from export to North Korea.

Exchanges between the two countries have grown increasingly active and North Korea is believed to be supplying artillery, rockets and ballistic missiles to Russia for use in the war against Ukraine.

The Kremlin has not denied nor confirmed its use of North Korean-made weapons. North Korea denies the accusation of arms shipment to Russia, which would also be violations of U.N. sanctions.

On Tuesday, KCNA separately reported that a delegation of North Korea ruling party officials returned from Russia and three delegations, representing information technology, fisheries and sports, departed for Russia.
