Arvind Kejriwal Summoned by Delhi Court

A Delhi court on Wednesday summoned Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on February 17 on a complaint filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against him over the non-compliance of its summons in a money-laundering case linked to the now-scrapped excise policy for the national capital.

“Cognisance of the complaint has been taken and summons is being issued to him to appear on February 17,” Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Divya Malhotra said.

The judge had reserved the order after the ED submitted that it had concluded its arguments in the matter.

The ED had on February 3 filed a fresh complaint case against Kejriwal for the non-compliance of its summons.

Kejriwal on Friday skipped the fifth summons issued to him by the ED. The agency had issued the summons to him on last Wednesday.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor had earlier written to the ED, describing the summonses as “illegal and politically motivated”. He had alleged that the summonses were aimed at preventing him from campaigning in elections.

$18 combo meal! After price criticism McDonalds CEO vows to cut prices!

McDonald’s faces backlash as rising menu prices spark customer outrage. CEO Chris Kempczinski addresses concerns.

McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski has addressed the criticism from customers who are unhappy with the rising prices of the fast food chain’s menu items.

McDonald’s growth is slowing down due to boycotts and losing “low-income” customers. The company says some people are protesting its support for IDF soldiers in Israel, while others are eating at home because they earn less than $45,000 a year. The company also faces backlash for charging $18 for a combo meal, which some say is too pricey for fast food.

Many customers have expressed their dissatisfaction on social media, posting receipts that show how much they have to pay for their orders.

One customer shared a photo of a receipt that showed a bill of over $20 for two Egg McMuffins and another breakfast sandwich, and asked, “What has the world come to?”

The fast food giant explains on its website that its prices are determined by its franchisees, who have to adjust them according to the costs and demand in their markets.

However, this has also affected McDonald’s sales, which saw a lower-than-expected growth in the last quarter. While analysts had predicted a 4.7 percent increase in sales, McDonald’s only reported a 3.4 percent growth.

Middle East conflict and cost challenges hit McDonald’s

One of the reasons for this slowdown was the conflict in the Middle East, which had a negative impact on the overseas franchises of McDonald’s. But Kempczinski also acknowledged that the cost factor was a challenge, and said that the company would focus more on ‘affordability’ in the coming year.

In an earnings call with analysts on Monday, 5 February, he said, “I think what you’re going to see as you head into 2024 is probably more attention to what I would describe as affordability

He also revealed that customers with low incomes, earning less than $45,000 per year, were ordering less from McDonald’s, and opting to eat at home more often, as the price of groceries went down.

Eating at home has become more affordable,” he said.

“The battleground is certainly with that low-income consumer.”

But the company’s chief financial officer, Ian Borden, told analysts that the situation would not improve significantly until the Middle East conflict was resolved.

Meanwhile, restaurant analyst Mark Kalinowski said that McDonald’s would still have to raise its prices, albeit at a slower rate of 2 to 3 percent over the next year. He said that McDonald’s would try to lure customers with special offers on its mobile app.

App discounts will be a big part of their arsenal,” he said.

The disappointing results of McDonald’s last quarter also affected its stock price, which fell by nearly 4 percent to $285.97 on Monday.

On This Day: Anil Kumble rips through Pakistan in New Delhi to pick up 10 wickets in an innings

OTD: 28 years ago on this very day, Anil Kumble became only the second bowler in the world to pick up 10 wickets in an innings in the history of Test cricket.

In Short

  • Anil Kumble finished with figures of 26.3-9-74-10 in the New Delhi Test
  • Kumble also accounted for 4 scalps in the first innings of the Test
  • Kumble is one of the 3 bowlers to pick up 10 wickets in a Test innings.

February 7, 1996, was a historic day in the history of Indian cricket. 28 years ago, on this very day, Anil Kumble became the first from his country to pick up 10 wickets in a Test innings. Kumble accomplished the feat in the second Test of the 2-match series against Pakistan at New Delhi’s Feroz Shah Kotla, now known as the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Kumble became the second bowler to reach the landmark after England’s Jim Laker, who picked up a 10-wicket haul against Australia at the Old Trafford in Manchester way back in July 1956.

Going into the New Delhi Test, India were under immense pressure after losing the first Test in Chennai by 12 runs. However, Mohammad Azharuddin and Co. finished the series 1-1 after Kumble pulled off an absolute spectacle with the ball in hand.

Starting with, Kumble helped India take a substantial lead of 80 runs in their first innings. The leg-spinner dismissed Ijaz Ahmed, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Yousuf and Saqlain Mushtaq to finish with impressive figures of 24.3-4-75-4.

Thereafter, Sadagopan Ramesh, Sourav Ganguly and Javagal Srinath scored 96, 62 and 49 respectively to make sure that India set Pakistan a stiff target of 420 to chase down.

Anil Kumble unleashes hell at Kotla

Pakistan made an impressive start to their run-chase after Saeed Anwar and Shahid Afridi put on 101 runs for the opening wicket off 24.2 overs. Just when it seemed that Pakistan were gradually getting themselves in a position of command, Kumble got the prized wicket of Afridi, who made 41 runs off 64 balls with 7 fours.

After Kumble made the initial breakthrough, Pakistan lost their way completely and were reduced to 128 for 6 in a space of 11.5 overs. Anwar made 69 runs off 128 balls before Kumble got rid of him.

Saleem Malik and skipper Wasim Akram tried to restore sanity with a partnership of 58 runs, but their efforts were never going to be enough for Pakistan to go past the finish line.

Kumble finished with figures of 26.3-9-74-10 as Pakistan were bowled out for 207 in 60.3 overs.

Apart from Laker and Kumble, New Zealand’s Ajaz Patel also holds the distinction of picking up 10 wickets in an innings. Patel achieved the feat in the Black Caps’ Test against India back in December 2021 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Pakistan Elections 2024: Controversy taints Pakistan’s political environment, with claims of military meddling clouding the election process.

Pakistan Elections 2024

As Pakistan gears up for its national elections on February 8, all eyes are on the two major contenders: Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). However, the political landscape is marred by controversy, with accusations of military interference casting a shadow over the electoral process.

Nawaz Sharif, the former Prime Minister, has emerged as the front-runner, with his party PML-N widely expected to secure victory. Sharif, who returned from self-exile last year, has positioned himself as a champion for economic revival, pledging to address pressing issues such as high inflation, currency instability, and low foreign reserves. Analysts suggest that Sharif’s perceived backing by the powerful military gives him an advantage over his rivals, particularly Imran Khan, his main political adversary.

Imran Khan, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and former Prime Minister, finds himself in a precarious position ahead of the elections. Despite winning the last national election, Khan is now in jail, with his party facing what many see as a military-backed crackdown. This development has significantly weakened Khan’s electoral prospects and cast doubt on the fairness of the electoral process.

In contrast, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the scion of Pakistan’s most prominent political dynasty, presents himself as a formidable contender for the premiership. As the son of the late Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and former President Asif Ali Zardari, Bilawal inherits a rich political legacy and commands significant support, particularly in southern Pakistan.

However, the upcoming elections are not without challenges. Pakistan grapples with a dire economic crisis, escalating inflation, and rising militant activities. Moreover, strained relations with neighboring countries further exacerbate the country’s woes. Despite these pressing issues, the election discourse has largely revolved around the power struggle between Sharif and Khan, sidelining crucial matters affecting the nation’s stability and security.

PM Modi to reply on ‘Motion of Thanks’ in Rajya Sabha today!

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will reply to the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address in Rajya Sabha today, February 7.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will reply to the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address in Rajya Sabha today, February 7. He replied to the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address in Lok Sabha on Monday. President Droupadi Murmu addressed the joint sitting on January 31, the first day of the budget session.

During his speech, he said that the third term of his government is not far and this time the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will win 400 seats, and the Bharatiya Janata Party, individually will get 370 seats.

He said the work done by the government in its current term gave him confidence that in the third term of the NDA, India will become the world’s third-largest economy, up from its fifth position now.

“This is Modi’s guarantee,” he told legislators, citing the speed of work in the country that gave him confidence this target would be reached within the next five-year term if the NDA wins the national election.

PM Modi said that in the interim budget for 2014, the then finance minister had said India had become the world’s eleventh-largest economy and over the next three decades would become the third-largest economy.

“This meant that India would become the third-largest economy only by 2044. We are confident of achieving this feat in the government’s third term itself,” Modi said.

“Our third term will be full of big decisions…I had said from the Red Fort and also reiterated at the time of Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha that I want to see the country prosperous and at the pinnacle of success for the next thousand years. The third term will be the time to lay a strong foundation for the next 1,000 years,” Modi said.

The Budget Session, which began on January 31, will be spread over eight sittings spread over 10 days and may conclude on February 9.

Here’s your comprehensive 3-minute summary of all the things Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in her Budget speech.

Hanuma Vihari Aspiration: To Achieve High Scores and Make a Comeback to the Test Team

New Delhi [India], February 6 (ANI): India batter Hanuma Vihari is eying a Test comeback by capping off the Ranji Trophy season on a strong note.
Vihari’s rich vein of form has contributed to Andhra Pradesh’s run in the Elite Group B. Andhra currently sits in second spot with three wins in five games.
The 30-year-old batter has helped his team, scoring 365 runs in seven innings, and sits behind only skipper Ricky Bhui’s tally of 550 runs for the team. His recent scores have allowed him to keep his average in domestic cricket above 50.
Vihari has found it hard to make a spot for himself in India’s playing XI but he is keen to leave his mark in domestic cricket and extend his 16 Test appearances.
“I do feel sad and disappointed that I am not in the Test team, but everyone goes through ups and downs, and my job now is to score runs in the Ranji Trophy. The season has gone all right, both for the team and for me. So the ambition is to score a lot of runs and try to return to the Test team,” Vihari told ESPNcricinfo after Andhra beat Bihar.
Vihari arguably produced one of the most celebrated knocks in 2021 in Indian Test history. His 23* of 161 deliveries in Sydney against Australia turned out to be a match- saving knock for the Indian team.
But since then he has been missing from the action and he indicated that it is likely that as of now he isn’t on the radar of selectors.
“No one has spoken to me recently, but Rahul Dravid did speak to me after my last Test, and he told me what I can improve on, but no, I haven’t been in touch with anyone since then,” Vihari said.
Vihari made his last Test appearance in 2022 at Edgbaston and scored 22 and 11. Now he is focused on improving and enjoying his game.

“But I only think about improving my game and enjoying it. If I don’t do that, there is no purpose left. When I go into the middle, I just want to do my best for the team and score runs. I am at a stage [in my career] where I have no expectations. I give my best each time I bat and then whatever happens will happen,” Vihari added.
Andhra Pradesh will now face Uttar Pradesh on February 9 at the PVG Raju ACA Sports Complex.

Indian-origin UK, Irish PMs mark return of power sharing in Northern Ireland

The Indian-origin prime ministers of the UK and Ireland, Rishi Sunak and Leo Varadkar, met on Monday to oversee a historic power-sharing pact in Northern Ireland, where a devolved government took charge after two years.

The Indian-origin prime ministers of the UK and Ireland, Rishi Sunak and Leo Varadkar, met on Monday to oversee a historic power-sharing pact in Northern Ireland, where a devolved government took charge after two years.

Prime Minister Sunak and Taoiseach Varadkar met at Parliament Buildings, Stormont Castle, in Belfast as they hailed efforts to restore devolution in Northern Ireland.

They also met political leaders separately, including First Minister Michelle O’Neill and Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly, who head the devolved region’s executive. Pengelly belongs to the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).

“Now it’s time to get to work,” said Sunak after his meetings.

“We’ve worked very hard and succeeded in protecting Northern Ireland’s place in the union and built on what we achieved with the Windsor Framework to ensure the smooth flow of trade in the UK and all the benefits that are there as a result of Brexit can be seized,” he said.

While Southampton-born Sunak’s roots connect with Punjab, Dublin-born Varadkar has his familial roots in Maharashtra.

In a readout of the historic discussions between the British Indian and Irish Indian leaders, Downing Street said Sunak began by congratulating the Ireland rugby team for their emphatic win against France in the Six Nations contest on Friday.

“This had been a challenging time, but patience had proved key to a deal. Now that the institutions were up and running again, he wanted to see all three strands functioning equally well. The sense of relief and optimism from people in Northern Ireland had been very striking and made it all worthwhile,” reads the Downing Street statement.

Both leaders agreed that a “stable, effective and successful” Northern Ireland – part of the United Kingdom and sharing a border with Ireland – benefitted the UK-Irish relationship immensely.

The British government has already pledged to provide a financial package worth GBP 3.3 billion, described by Sunak as “generous and fair”, to any newly-formed executive at Stormont.

The return of power-sharing came after months of negotiations involving the government and the DUP of Northern Ireland. It withdrew from power-sharing in February 2022 protesting the post-Brexit trade arrangements for Northern Ireland, agreed between the UK and European Union (EU).

Last week, DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson announced his party had a reached a deal with Number 10 that means no “routine” checks on goods crossing from Great Britain to Northern Ireland. He said on this basis, and with legislation passed at Westminster to implement more changes, his party would return to government.

Writing in the visitors’ book at Parliament Buildings in Belfast, Taoiseach Varadkar wrote: “Delighted to be here on an important day for Northern Ireland and to witness devolved democracy and the Good Friday Agreement operating once more.”

The Good Friday Agreement, signed in 1998 by then British Prime Minister Tony Blair and his Irish counterpart Bertie Ahern, backed by then US President Bill Clinton, brought an end to 30 years of conflict in Northern Ireland, known as the Troubles.

RBI Approves HDFC Bank’s proposal to acquire 9.5% in IndusInd Bank: Explained

RBI said that HDFC Bank needs to acquire major shareholding within one year from February 5, 2024.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) approved HDFC Bank Limited’s application to acquire an “aggregate holding” of up to 9.5 per cent of the paid-up share capital or voting rights in IndusInd Bank Limited, as per a regulatory filing by IndusInd Bank with the BSE. RBI’s approval is subject to compliance with the relevant provisions of the Banking Regulations Act, 1949, RBI’s Master Direction and Guidelines on Acquisition and Holding of Shares or Voting Rights in Banking Companies dated January 16, 2023 (as amended from time to time), provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999, regulations issued by the Securities and Exchange Board of India, and any other statutes, regulations, and guidelines, as applicable, the filing noted.

What has the RBI said?

The central bank said that HDFC Bank needs to acquire major shareholding within one year from February 5, 2024. The approval will stand cancelled if HDFC fails to do the same.

What are the next steps for HDFC Bank?

HDFC Bank will need to ensure that its holding in IndusInd Bank does not exceed 9.50 per cent of the paid-up share capital or voting rights. If this falls below 5 per cent, approval of the RBI will be required to increase it to 5 per cent or more of the paid-up share capital or voting rights.

What has happened before?

In January, RBI allowed Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) to acquire up to 9.99 per cent stake in HDFC Bank Ltd. HDFC Bank said, “LIC has been advised by RBI to acquire the aforesaid major shareholding in the Bank within one year i.e. by January 24, 2025. Further, LIC must ensure that the aggregate holding in the Bank does not exceed 9.99 per cent of the paid-up share capital or voting rights of the Bank at all times.”
