“Chamkila” Review of the film: Diljit Dosanjh consistently supports Imtiaz Ali’s lively musical!

“Chamkila” Imtiaz Ali’s vibrant tribute to the late Punjabi singer is less of an intricate examination and more of a celebration.

Born Dhani Ram in a Punjabi Dalit Sikh household, singer Amar Singh Chamkila rose to prominence in the 1980s with his gritty musical style and taunting lyrics. His ground-breaking compositions were equally aware of rural class discontent in the working North as they were fixated on incest and illicit love. He was shot and killed in Mehsampur on March 8, 1988, while getting out of his automobile for a performance by unidentified gunmen. Along with him were two other members of his troupe and his wife, Amarjot, who was also his singing partner. There were several explanations put out, but the case remained unresolved since the state was being overrun by a violent insurrection.

This strange incident from Punjab’s troubled past has previously been used as material for films, most notably in the innovative absurdist docu-fiction Mehsampur (2018) directed by Kabir Singh Chowdhry. Now, Imtiaz Ali attempts to tackle Chamkila, co-writing with his brother, Sajid. Fans who are already familiar with the basic details of the singer’s life and passing, along with many rumors, won’t be convinced again. In Ali’s film, no mysteries are solved and no ghosts are banished. This interpretation of the Chamkila story is somewhat simple and more of a vivacious celebration than a thorough analysis. It does, however, manage to provide a glimpse into the artist’s innermost thoughts despite its squareness.

This happens considerably late in the film. Chamkila (Diljit Dosanjh) has sold out his Toronto show, during his overseas tour of ‘87. His oily impresario is grinning from ear to ear, telling him how, when Amitabh Bachchan performed at the same venue a few nights ago, they had to add 137 extra seats. In Chamkila’s case, he proudly adds, that number has exceeded a thousand. We expect Chamkila to cheer up at this achievement; he’s been, all his life, a devout Bachchan fan. Instead, his smile fades like the morning mist real explanation is provided for his blues: a narrator dryly notes that artists are strange creatures and that Chamkila’s dejection resembled something like a loss, as though his childhood had suddenly ended. This moment buried deep in the noise and tumult of Chamkila’s extraordinary life, is the best in Ali’s film, even if it’s wholly fictitious. Far from supplying answers about the slain Punjabi singer, mythologized to breaking point in popular discourse, it asks a gentle question: how comfortable was Chamkila, improbably baptized the ‘Elvis of Punjab’, with his meteoric rise?

Ali opens his tale with the fateful assassination, then proceeds to jumble up childhood and death, deed and aftermath, fact and hearsay. The lilting soundtrack begins to throb; images alter color and form; superimpositions appear. The wailing ‘Baaja’ reaches an angry crescendo, complete with spoken lines, like Broadway meets protest street theatre. It is a carousel spin of a start, reminiscent of the grainy dream sequences in Tamasha (2015), or the swirling structural schemes editor Aarti Bajaj devised for Rockstar (2011).

After this dramatic introduction, a largely subdued summary of Chamkila’s life and times follows. An average mill worker, he writes lyrics for the folk sensation Jinda (modeled after Punjabi singer Surinder Shinda) and brings him tea after charming his way into his orbit. An opportunity to perform for a furious akhada reveals his vocal prowess. He gains popularity by crooning upbeat duets, but he quickly runs out of supporters and a partner. Most people get tired of his high-pitched delivery and constant appointments, but Amarjot (Parineeti Chopra), who is tickled pink by his lewd rhymes, manages to stick around. They tie the knot.

It is known that Amarjot was descended from a Jat family of higher caste, while Chamkila’s ancestors were Chamar. Not only that but he was previously married, which he first keeps from Amarjot (and from Ali from us). Other factors were involved. Religious leaders and radicals roaming the countryside had placed severe restrictions on speech and culture; the police, who were cracking down hard in retaliation, weren’t any nicer. Chamkila was labeled as a renegade, or baagi, who corrupted young and families. He was exposed to various forms of intimidation and harassment as a result. In one chilling moment, a group of thugs show up at his door and tell him they enjoy his music before shaking him down for money.

Ali barrels through the dark sociopolitical atmosphere of 80s Punjab, as you’d expect from a filmmaker of his (mostly romantic) persuasion. There is a constant softening of mood and tone, be it through the vivid 2-D animation sequences or A.R. Rahman’s pulsing original soundtrack. ‘Ishq Mitaye’ is pained but glorious, with its echoing refrain of ‘Main hoon Panjab’, while ‘Naram Kaalja’ is a perfectly drawn women’s folk number, lyricist Irshad Kamil having fun with the skittish imagery, riffing about “small sickles” and “snakes around thighs”. Despite Chamkila’s inflammatory repute, this isn’t a particularly provocative film, mindful of cultural norms in its chosen time.

Prince William saw a lady at a pub as Kate Middleton stayed at home for cancer treatment; check who she is…

Due to her cancer treatment, Kate Middleton stayed at home, while Prince William was spotted at a pub enjoying a drink with a woman. Identify the woman if you can.

As Kate Middleton receives cancer treatment at home, Prince William was spotted at a Norfolk pub with a woman. That person was none other than Carole Middleton, his mother-in-law, who has been billeted with the Prince and Princess of Wales since Easter.

Throughout her medical journey, Kate has had constant encouragement from her parents. The family has been hosting Carole, 69, and her 74-year-old father, Mike, at Anmer Hall on the Sandringham Estate.

The Daily Mail provided an update, stating that there wasn’t much “great fanfare” and that the outing was “very low-key.” He simply strolled into and into the pub, according to the British daily. It seemed like he was with Carole Middleton. Catherine, who is receiving treatment for an unidentified type of cancer, was nowhere to be found.”

According to media reports, the family is enjoying the Easter Holiday. Kate and William will send their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, back to school in Berkshire on April 17.

William, and Kate in focus as Charles undergoes treatment

Royal expert Tina Brown earlier published an op-ed in The New York Times. She wrote, “Catherine is the most popular royal family member after William. The future of the monarchy hangs by a thread, and that thread is her.”

The expert believes that King Charles is unlikely to play a significant role anytime soon, particularly given that he has also been receiving cancer treatment.

There’s not much support from other family members. The more streamlined monarchy that Charles consistently championed appears incredibly slender at this point. William, 41, and Catherine are very close to taking the throne as a result of Charles’s cancer, which may be causing the couple a great deal of anxiety, the source continued.

Charles’ cancerous condition is not known to be severe. However, sources told The Sun that Charles was thinking about traveling to Australia at a later date in 2024.

Vietnam real estate tycoon Truong My Lan was sentenced to death in a fraud case. Who is she, the case – All you need to know!

Famous Vietnam Businesswoman Truong My Lan received the death penalty for a $12.5 billion swindle.

In the largest-ever financial fraud case in Vietnam, real estate mogul Truong My Lan was sentenced to death on Thursday. The 67-year-old businesswoman was accused of defrauding the government out of $12.5 billion in 2022, or almost 3 percent of the GDP of the nation. She is the chair of the real estate firm Van Thinh Phat, which has created opulent residences, hotels, workplaces, and retail centers. Truong Hue Van, the chief executive of Van Thinh Phat, was sentenced to 17 years in prison for supporting her aunt along with Lan. According to reports, the death penalty is not unheard of in Vietnam; nonetheless, it is uncommon in circumstances of financial wrongdoing and for a person of such notoriety.

What is Truong My Lan accused of?

Lan was involved in the 2011 merger of the troubled Saigon Joint Commercial Bank, or SCB, with two other lenders in a plan coordinated by the Vietnam Central Bank.

According to the government documents, Lan is accused of using the bank for personal gains, illegally controlling it between 2012 and 2022. The documents further stated that she utilized numerous “ghost companies” both domestically and internationally to issue loans to herself and her associates. The loans resulted in losses of $27 billion, state media VN Express said as reported by Associated Press.

In addition to this, Lan as per the documents, was accused of paying bribes to government officials, including a former central official who has been sentenced to life in prison for taking $5.2 million in bribes.

The court sentenced her to death because her activities “erode people’s trust in the leadership of the (Communist) party and state, as well as violate individuals’ property management rights,” according to the court’s statement.

The Prime Minister expressed his vision for a “wonderful picture of new Jammu and Kashmir” during an electoral rally in Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir.

“Modi has long-term vision. So far, only the trailer has been released. I have to get to work painting a fresh and fantastic portrait of the modern-day Jammu and Kashmir. Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections will take place in a short while. The statehood of Jammu and Kashmir will be granted. PM Modi stated that there will be no need to worry about terrorism, strikes, stone-throwing, or cross-border gunfire during the next Lok Sabha elections in Jammu & Kashmir.

“After decades, election-related concerns such as terrorism, separatism, stone-pelting, strikes, and cross-border terrorism are no longer present in this year’s election. The security situation for the pilgrimages to Vaishno Devi and Amarnath used to be a problem, but it has completely altered now. The people’s trust in the administration is growing as Jammu and Kashmir experiences development, he remarked.

The Prime Minister also attacked the Congress and the INDIA coalition, claiming that they merely like to play with the emotions of the country’s majority of people and have no regard for their feelings.

Addressing the Udhampur rally, PM Modi criticized those on bail for visiting convicted criminals’ homes, cooking mutton during Sawan, and sharing videos, comparing their actions to Mughal aggression towards temples.

“A person who has been sentenced by the court and who is on bail visits the house of such a criminal and enjoys cooking mutton in the month of Sawan and they make a video of it to tease the people of the country. The law does not stop anyone from eating anything but the intentions of these people are something else. When the Mughals attacked here, they were not satisfied until they demolished the temples. So just like Mughals, they want to tease the people of the country by showing the video in the month of Sawan…,” PM Modi said.

PM Modi denied that Ram Mandir was ever an electoral topic, refuting the Congress’ assertion that it is a BJP election issue. Even before the BJP was founded, there was a fight to build a Ram temple. The Indian people battled to defend their sacred sites after foreign invaders demolished our temples. He claimed, “The Congress leaders and its allies lived in large bungalows, but they used to turn their backs when it came to changing Ram Lalla’s tent.”

PM Narendra Modi interview: “Opposition believes NDA government will return”

According to PM Narendra Modi, the opposition will undoubtedly lose the general elections.

In an exclusive interview with Hindustan Times’ sister journal Hindustan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a scathing jab at the Opposition, claiming that their leaders are not running for office in the Lok Sabha elections because they think the NDA government will win back control.

PM Modi said the Opposition is certain of its defeat in the general elections.

“It is not the election, but the Opposition camp that is dull because of their certain defeat. Even the Opposition believes that the NDA government will return to power, which is why even several opposition leaders are shying away from poll campaigns… Many people have started blaming EVMs (electronic voting machines) even before the polls have begun,” he said.

Amid the Opposition’s accusation that the Centre has been misusing agencies to target political opponents, PM Modi vowed that action against those who steal people’s money will not end.

“Whatever be the level of corruption, it impacts the people of the country… action against such people, who steal the money meant for the welfare of the people of this country, will not end,” he said.

PM Modi rejected the Opposition’s charge of misuse of agencies. He said out of all cases being probed by the Enforcement Directorate, only 3 percent were linked to those in politics.
PM Modi said those who benefit from corruption cry foul.

Just 3% of the corruption cases that the Enforcement Directorate is looking into involve political figures. Officials and criminals are connected to the remaining 97% of incidents. He remarked, “Those who are complaining and painting the false picture are the ones who find benefits in a corrupt system.
“The stories you’ve heard, according to which our target is solely political corruption, are being spread by individuals who work for investigative agencies,” he continued.

According to PM Modi, the Enforcement Directorate prosecuted dishonest officials and sequestered assets valued at thousands of crores.

“Before 2014, ED attached assets worth only ₹5,000 crores, whereas, in the last 10 years, that amount has increased to more than ₹1 lakh crore. Before 2014, ED had seized only ₹34 lakh in cash, while under our government it has seized more than ₹2,200 crore in cash. Imagine, if this money was invested in welfare schemes for the poor, how many people would have benefited, and how many opportunities could have been created for the youth? So many new infrastructure projects could have been launched,” he said.

PM Modi also attacked the Congress party, saying they strengthened “their family” when they had full majority governments at the Centre. He said the BJP government has been strengthening the country.

“People have got the opportunity to compare the BJP model and the Congress model for the first time. The Congress ruled the country with a full majority for 5-6 decades. In comparison, the BJP has served with absolute majority for only one decade. When they had full majority governments, all they did was strengthen their family. Today, when we have a majority government, our priority is to strengthen the country — villages, the poor, our farmers, and the middle-class society,” he said.

Voting for the seven-phased Lok Sabha elections will begin on April 19. The counting of votes will take place on June 4.

Lifetime to air documentary on Nicole Brown Simpson, O.J. Simpson’s ex-wife who was killed!

Lifetime is getting ready to launch “The Life and Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson” in time for the 30th anniversary of the 1994 killings of Simpson and Ronald Goldman.

A brand-new documentary on Nicole Brown Simpson’s life and tragic murder is being produced by Lifetime.

Following O.J. Simpson’s passing, PEOPLE has learned that Nicole Brown Simpson, the controversial football player’s wife, will be the subject of a new two-part documentary titled “The Life and Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson,” which is tentatively scheduled to premiere in June. Nicole was found murdered inside the Brentwood, California home she shared with her husband in 1994.

The documentary, for which Lifetime has conducted interviews with over fifty individuals, including Nicole’s sisters and other relatives and friends, will be released on June 12, 1994, the day marking the thirty-first anniversary of her murder. There will also be never-before-seen archive material.

The 35-year-old mother of two passed away. After seven years of marriage, she and O.J. welcomed a daughter named Sydney and a son named Justin.

That June 1994 evening in California also resulted in the discovery of Ronald Goldman, Nicole’s acquaintance, dead at the Simpson residence.

After being taken into custody for the killings after a slow-speed pursuit in Los Angeles that was widely reported, O.J. was ultimately found not guilty of any crimes in what became known as the “Trial of the Century.”

In a 1997 civil lawsuit about the killings, he was later held responsible and sentenced to prison for unrelated offenses.

The violent life of the former football star has been the subject of several documentaries over the years, but Nicole’s perspective and experience with domestic abuse are reportedly the focus of Lifetime’s next project. The network’s Stop Violence Against Women initiative covers the project.

Simpson passed away on Wednesday, April 10, at the age of 76 from cancer, as his family announced on X on Thursday, April 11.

“Our father, Orenthal James Simpson, lost his fight with cancer on April 10. His kids and grandkids were all around him, according to the family statement. “During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace,” the message continued.

The June debut date of the Nicole documentary is tentative and will take place over two nights.

“Our daughter had been grasping the accused’s hand. The woman told us about our scared-looking daughter. The complainant told police, “She later confided in me that the accused took her to his flat where he raped her.”

The defendant was booked at the Kharar City police station under Sections 376 (rape) and 376-AB (committing rape on a woman under the age of 12) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 6 (annoyed penetrative sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act after the mother, a housewife, reported the incident to the police right away.

According to police officials familiar with the matter, the accused, who has a five-year-old son, had sexually assaulted another child a few years back, following which he was confronted by the society residents. However, the incident was not reported to the police then.

On Monday, Vodafone Idea is going to launch a Rs 18,000–20,000 crore FPO.

Anchor investors have committed more than Rs 8,200 crore in equity to Vodafone, which is seeking to raise Rs 45,000 crore in debt and equity. Growth capex will be the primary use of the funds.

 Vodafone Idea

According to sources who spoke with Moneycontrol, Vodafone Idea (Vi) is getting ready to conduct a follow-on public offer (FPO) to raise between Rs 18,000 and Rs 20,000 crore by the middle of the following week.

As lead managers for the FPO—the biggest offers of its kind in India—the indebted telecoms operator has brought on Jefferies, SBI Caps, and Axis Capital. However, according to insiders, none of the banks are financing the project.

As of right now, the largest share sale in the Indian market has been Yes Bank’s Rs 15,000 crore FPO.

Adani Enterprises’ Rs 20,000-crore FPO in January 2023 was expected to surpass it, but the Gautam Adani flagship business canceled the offer after the Adani group was accused of multiple governance violations in a Hindenburg Research report.

According to sources, Vodafone Idea has received commitments from institutional investors, both domestic and overseas, indicating early support for the FPO.

According to sources, the government of India, which owns 33% of the company’s shares, supports the fundraising. However, some investors contacted the government before investing in the FPO.

Jefferies and Axis Capital declined to comment, while emails submitted to Vi and SBI Capital were not returned.

The decision was made amid financial difficulties and fierce competition in the telecom industry.

Due to a substantial debt load and operating losses that have been made worse by regulatory concerns, Vodafone Idea’s subscriber base and market share have been declining.

The preferential allotment of shares valued at Rs 2,075 crore to Oriana Investments Pte Ltd, a member of the promoter group and an Aditya Birla Group subsidiary, was approved by the Vodafone Idea board on April 5.

The issue price is Rs 14.87, which is more than the BSE’s closing price on Friday of Rs 13.36.

It is anticipated that the offering’s profits will give the business much-needed support and cash.

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) data shows that in February, Vodafone Idea’s customer base decreased by 1 million, to 220.5 million. Due to customers switching to alternative service providers, the telco has been losing two to six million customers every quarter for the past few quarters. As of December 31, there were 215.2 million users of Vodafone Idea worldwide.

According to industry experts, to maintain subscriber retention and raise service quality, the telco must make immediate infrastructural investments.

The Vodafone Idea stock was down about 2 percent from the previous closing at 11.48 p.m. on the National Stock Exchange, trading at Rs 12.65.
