Vodafone Idea: Rs. 18 billion FPO begins on April 18 with a floor price of Rs 10.

Vodafone Idea: Launching a Rs. 18 billion FPO to Start on a Path to Financial Revival

The telecom company Vodafone Idea announced on April 12 that subscriptions for its Rs 18,000-crore follow-on public offer (FPO) would begin on April 18. A floor price of Rs 10 per share and a ceiling of Rs 11 have been set for the issue.

The deal expires on April 22. The company stated in an exchange filing that the anchor bids will be accepted on April 16.

April 10 Vodafone Idea was preparing to start an FPO to raise Rs 18,000–20,000 crore. As lead managers for the FPO—the biggest offers of its kind in India—the indebted company has brought on Jefferies, SBI Caps, and Axis Capital.

A minimum bid lot of 1,298 equity shares is available to investors. For one batch of shares in the FPO, the minimum application amount, depending on the top end of the price band, is Rs 14,278. After that, bids in multiples of 1,298 equity shares are accepted from investors.

The company’s board approved raising Rs 20,000 crore via stock on February 27, which led to the FPO.

Preferential shares were recently issued by the company to Oriana Investments Pte Ltd, a promoter entity within the Aditya Birla Group, to raise a total of Rs 2,075 crore.

At Rs 14.87 a share, the shares were issued, representing a 40% increase over the FPO floor price.

The telecom operator is rumored to be in talks with banks to arrange loan finance in addition to the Rs 20,000 crore equity fundraise, bringing the total fundraise to Rs 45,000 crore when debt and equity are combined.

Brokerage CLSA recently stated that Vodafone Idea’s shares could drop to Rs 5 following the company’s 17 million subscriber loss over the previous 12 months.

Beyond its capex and 5G rollout, Vodafone Idea may face a financial crunch in fiscal year 2026 when annual spectrum and AGR payments worth up to $4 billion will fall due unless the government converts debt principal to equity at the end of the moratorium, it said.

The brokerage maintained its “sell” rating on the stock.

Shares of Vodafone Idea have doubled over the last 12 months, though the stock has corrected 30 percent from its recent peak.

For the April 12 session, the stock is in the F&O ban, which means no new positions can be created in the stock.

At 9.35 am, shares of Vodafone Idea were trading 2 percent lower at Rs 12.65 on the National Stock Exchange.

After a bus crash in Haryana that claimed the lives of six students, the principal was one of three people arrested.

Haryana Bus Crash: The medical certificate for the bus was six years old.

Three persons have been detained at the event, including the principal of the school whose bus overturned in Mahendragarh, Haryana, killing six children. In addition to the school secretary, the driver has also been brought into jail. It is said that the driver leaped out of the bus moments before it crashed into a tree.
According to a top police official, the driver’s medical examination verified that alcohol was in his system.

Fourteen of the students who were hospitalized after the accident have been discharged but three are critical.

Students from Class 4 to 10 were heading to the GL Public School on Thursday when the bus carrying them rammed into a tree and overturned. The bus belonged to the school and documents showed that the bus’ fitness certificate had expired six years ago, in 2018. A state road transport official has been suspended.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Mahendra Rana said in Hindi, “A case has been registered under sections of the Indian Penal Code dealing with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and others. Sections of the Motor Vehicle Act have also been applied because the fitness certificate was not valid. The driver, Dharmendra, the principal, Dipti, and a staff member, Hoshiyar Singh, who was a secretary and looked after the buses and other such matters, have been arrested”

Alcohol was found in the driver’s bloodstream, according to a medical examination,” Mr. Rana continued.

In response to an inquiry regarding locals’ claims that several of them had stopped the bus and reported the driver’s intoxication to the school authorities thirty minutes before the accident, the police officer stated that the individual making the claim had recorded their testimony. He also disclosed that there had been a recent challan against the bus.

State Education Minister Seema Trikha said an inquiry is being conducted to establish why classes were being held in the school on Eid, which is a holiday.

It was appropriate for the school to be open today. Aside from that, we have obtained self-affidavits from private schools and issued a show-cause notice. The schools will need to certify in writing that the vehicles they utilize for transportation are compliant with all applicable transportation laws,” she said.

Justin Trudeau rejects allegations of Chinese election interference made by a Canadian covert operations agency.

Speaking before Justice Marie-Josee Hogue’s Public Inquiry into Foreign Intervention in Federal Election Processes and Democratic Institutions, Justin Trudeau provided testimony on Wednesday.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has questioned the assertion by the country’s spy agency that China “clandestinely and deceptively” conducted foreign interference in the 2019 and 2021 Federal elections in Canada.

Trudeau appeared on Wednesday before the Public Inquiry into Foreign Interference in Federal Electoral Processes and Democratic Institutions, which is headed by Justice Marie-Josee Hogue.

Trudeau said, “What I am saying, you have to take this intelligence, you have to take this information, with a certain awareness that it still needs to be confirmed or it might not be 100-per-cent accurate.”

Those allegations were contained in a briefing note from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service or CSIS, provided to the Prime Minister’s Office in February 2023. That document, titled Briefing to the Prime Minister’s Office on Foreign Interference Threats to Canada’s Democratic Institutions, said, “We know that the PRC clandestinely and deceptively interfered both in the 2019 and 2021 general elections.” PRC refers to the People’s Republic of China.

The target was the principal opposition Conservative Party and its then leader Erin O’Toole, who adopted a platform that was sharply critical of Beijing. “In 2021, the PRC FI was almost certainly motivated by a perception that the Conservative Party of Canada was promoted on a platform that was perceived to be anti-PRC,” the CSIS note stated.

Earlier, O’Toole had testified before the Inquiry they won fewer seats than what was expected, down from the 127 modelled to the outcome of 199 in the 2021 Federal elections. Though, he said, that would not change the ultimate result of the election, with the ruling Liberal Party returning to power and Trudeau heading another minority Government, he estimated that “suppression” could have led to a loss of between five and nine seats. “I think a lot of people didn’t vote because they were intimidated,” he had said.

Justin Trudeau of Canada on the murder of Nijjar; charges that the previous government was “cozy” with India!

According to Prime Minister Justine Trudeau of Canada, his government has consistently supported minorities’ rights to free speech and participation in Canada.

After claiming that his government defended Canadians, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada has escalated the death of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. In testimony given at a public inquiry into foreign meddling in Canada’s election process, Justin Trudeau stated that his administration was steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding citizens.

In a hearing presided over by French judge Marie-Josee Hogue, the foreign interference committee, Justin Trudeau accused the nation’s former Conservative government of being “cozy” with the present Indian leadership.

Although the results of the last two Canadian elections were unaffected by Chinese attempts to interfere, Justin Trudeau asserted that it was “improbable” that Beijing favored one party over another.

In oathed evidence before a panel holding a public investigation into purported foreign meddling in the Canadian elections of 2019 and 2021, Justin Trudeau addressed inquiries concerning intelligence briefings he had been provided and maintained that the elections were “free and fair.”

Under pressure from opposition lawmakers dissatisfied with media reporting on China’s potential involvement in the elections, Trudeau established the panel last year.

What did Justin Trudeau say?

  • Asked about foreign interference during the 2019 elections and redacted parts in the 2019 annual report of the NSI, Justin Trudeau said, “In a public setting, I can’t speak to redactions made for national security. But, I will say that the principle that anyone who comes to Canada from anywhere in the world has all the rights of a Canadian to be free from extortion, coercion, and interference from a country that they left behind and how we have stood up for Canadians, including in the very serious case that I brought forward to Parliament of the killing of (Hardeep Singh) Nijjar, demonstrates our government’s commitment to defending the rights and freedoms of Canadians.”
  • “And the suggestion that we haven’t and we won’t do everything we can to defend Canadian rules and values and defend Canadians from foreign interference is simply misplaced,” Justine Trudeau is heard in a video of the inquiry proceedings shared by Canadian newspaper The Global and Mail.
  • “Our government has always stood up to defend minorities in Canada and the rights of minorities to speak out even if it irritates their home countries overseas,” the Canadian prime minister said.
  • Asked whether appropriate steps were not taken to expose foreign interference, Justin Trudeau replied, “I think that’s certainly a question one needs to ask of the previous conservative government that was known for its very cozy relationship with the current Indian government. Whereas our government has always stood up to defend minorities in Canada and the rights of minorities to speak out, even if it irritates their home countries overseas,” according to the video shared by The Global and Mail.
  • In a classified February interview with the Commission of Inquiry, Justin Trudeau called it extremely damaging to the confidence of the people of Canada in the democratic process. A public summary of the interview was revealed at the inquiry on Wednesday, where Trudeau testified at an open hearing. Trudeau expressed his frustration that intelligence leaked to the media had been “sensationalized” and taken out of context, Canada-based CTV News reported.

India-Canada ties

The relations between India and Canada came under severe strain following Justin Trudeau’s allegations last year of a “potential” involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June 2023.

Days after Justin Trudeau’s allegations, India announced temporarily suspending the issuance of visas to Canadian citizens and asked Ottawa to downsize its diplomatic presence in the country.

India has rejected Justin Trudeau’s allegations as “absurd” and “motivated” and accused Canada of giving space to Khalistani extremists targeting India.

India had designated Nijjar as a terrorist in 2020.

The trial, which began on March 5 and ended earlier than planned, came as part of a campaign against graft that the leader of the ruling Communist Party, Nguyen Phu Trong, has pledged for years to stamp out, although with few tangible results.

The crackdown, dubbed “blazing furnace”, has seen hundreds of senior state officials and high-profile business executives prosecuted or forced to step down.

At one point in 2022, Vietnamese stocks suffered a $40 billion wipeout following a series of big corporate arrests, rattling investor confidence at a delicate moment for the fast-growing economy.

Lan’s lawyers were not immediately available for comment.

Lan and her accomplices were accused of siphoning off more than 304 trillion dongs from Saigon Joint Stock Commercial Bank (SCB), which she effectively controlled through dozens of proxies, according to investigators.

After being detained in Hyderabad on March 15 by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on suspicion of money laundering, Ms. Kavitha was placed under judicial custody and sent to Tihar Jail. A special court gave the CBI permission to arrest her on April 10.

It has been alleged that Ms. Kavitha was part of a “South Group’ which paid ₹100 crore in advance as “kickbacks” through the then Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) communication and media in-charge Vijay Nair, who represented some AAP leaders.

According to the probe agencies, she and other members of the group had conspired with the top AAP leaders, including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the then Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, to get favors in the formulation and implementation of the excise policy.

The CBI registered the case on August 17, 2022, against Mr. Sisodia and 14 others on a reference from the Union Home Ministry. It was alleged that the excise policy was tweaked to extend undue favors to license holders; the license fee was waived or reduced; and the L-1 (wholesaler) license was extended without the competent authority’s clearance.

The policy extended an extraordinarily high-profit margin of 12% for wholesalers and almost 185% profit margin for retailers.

Instead of the alleged ₹100-crore “kickbacks”, the “South Group” partners were given 65% stakes in Indo Spirits company for the recovery of payments. These stakes were controlled through “false representation, concealment of true ownership and proxies”, as alleged.
