16.63 crore of the 97 crore registered voters in India are eligible to cast ballots in today’s election for the Lower House of Parliament, which consists of 543 members.
3.51 crore young voters, aged 20 to 29, and 35.67 lakh first-time voters are also eligible to cast ballots in the first round of the Lok Sabha elections.
Following the first round of voting, the Lok Sabha elections will be concluded in Tamil Nadu (39 seats), Uttarakhand (5), Arunachal Pradesh (2), Meghalaya (2), Andaman and Nicobar Islands (1), Mizoram (1), Nagaland (1), Puducherry (1), Sikkim (1), and Lakshadweep (1).
In Rajasthan, elections were held in 12 seats. The following states will also hold elections today: eight seats in Uttar Pradesh, six in Madhya Pradesh, five in Assam and Maharashtra, four in Bihar, three in West Bengal, two in Manipur, and one in each of Tripura, Jammu and Kashmir, and Chhattisgarh.
In addition to Gadkari and Sonowal, seven other Union ministers are running in the first round of the polls: Bhupendra Yadav, Kiren Rijiju, Sanjeev Baliyan, Jitendra Singh, Arjun Ram Meghwal, L Murugan, and Nisith Pramanik.
Getting a great result in Tamil Nadu is essential to the BJP’s strategy of gaining 370 seats and leading the NDA to more than 400 seats.
In Tamil Nadu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has led a vigorous campaign where his primary platform has been the advancement and respect of Tamil language and culture. The Katchatheevu dispute also led to attacks between the BJP and the DMK.
The BJP had drawn a blank in Tamil Nadu in the 2019 general elections. The DMK had won 38 seats.
In 2019, the BJP had pulled off its best-ever performance by winning 303 seats.
