Mohammed Shami undergoes Achilles tendon surgery, set to miss IPL 2024!

Indian star fast bowler Mohammed Shami made a significant announcement on Monday, revealing that he recently underwent surgery on his Achilles tendon. 

The right-arm pacer took to social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to inform his fans about the news.

“Just had a successful heel operation on my achilles tendon! Recovery is going to take some time, but looking forward to getting back on my feet. #AchillesRecovery #HeelSurgery #RoadToRecovery,” Shami posted on X.

Shami was absent from the home T20I series against Australia after the ICC event, and he was subsequently ruled out of the entire South Africa tour. He also missed the Afghanistan series and is currently not participating in the ongoing Test series against England.

The 33-year-old, who is not part of the current five-match Test series against England, last played for India in the ODI World Cup final against Australia in November. Shami emerged as the tournament’s highest wicket-taker, dismissing 24 batters in just 7 matches.

Despite struggling with injury issues, Shami’s determination and skill were evident throughout India’s impressive World Cup campaign. 

The latest update indicates that Shami will also miss the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. This news is a major setback for the Gujarat Titans franchise, as Shami was a key figure in their pace attack.

Shami played a crucial role in GT’s success during both seasons. He made a significant impact by taking 20 wickets in 2022 and further excelled in IPL 2023, securing 28 wickets with an impressive average of 18.64.

The awardees of the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award (2023) are Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy (badminton) and Chirag Shetty.

Shami Likely To Miss 2 Tests Against England; Suryakumar To Undergo Hernia Sugery

Fast bowler Mohammed Shami is likely to miss the first two Test matches against England starting from January 25 as he hasn’t resumed bowling post his ankle injury. In another development, World’s No.1 ranked T20 batsman Suryakumar Yadav’s return to cricket could take longer as it is learnt that he is suffering from hernia and needs surgery. Yadav is expected to be completely fit by the time of the IPL. .

“Shami hasn’t even started to bowl, he will have to go to NCA and prove his fitness. He looks doubtful for the first two Tests against England. Whereas in Yadav’s case he will take more time than expected. After his hernia operation it might take up to eight-nine weeks for him to start training. Hopefully he will be fit during the IPL,” a source in the Indian board informed.

Shami was included in the Test squad against South Africa that was announced on November 30 but the 33-year-old’s availability was subject to his recovery post treatment.

Later in its press release BCCI had stated that Shami’s participation in the Test series was subject to fitness and that he had not been cleared by the BCCI Medical Team.

The Indian Express understands that the BCCI will not rush Shami’s return more so because the five-match Test series is being played at home and Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah will be available. With spin also expected to play a major role, India won’t need its full set of fast bowlers.

It is learnt the BCCI is consulting specialists regarding Yadav’s hernia and he is likely to be sent abroad for surgery.
