For graft, two Chandigarh officials were detained.

Chandigarh officials, April 26

A Junior Engineer (JE) and a Head Draftsman of the UT Estate Office have been arrested by the Vigilance Cell for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 15,000.

Vigilance officials said they received a complaint that the accused were demanding a bribe in lieu of inspection of violation removal and its clearance. After verifying the complaint, vigilance sleuths laid a trap and nabbed Bipin Bagga, posted as Head Draftsman in the building branch, while allegedly taking Rs 15,000 in bribe at his office.

India-bound ship attacked by Houthis in Red Sea; details here

The Houthis of Yemen persisted in their attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea during the Israel-Gaza conflict. The Andromeda Star oil tanker in the Red Sea was struck by missiles fired by the Houthis, who are supported by Iran, on Saturday. The tanker was traveling from Vadinar, India, to Primorsk, Russia.

According to US Central Command, the Houthis fired three anti-ship ballistic missiles into the Red Sea from Yemen, slightly damaging an oil tanker.

It said that a missile landed in the vicinity of a second vessel, the MV Maisha, but it was not damaged.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations security agency said the attack took place southwest of the Yemeni port of Mokha. The second attack on the vessel consisted of what is believed to be two missiles, which resulted in damage, it added.

According to Reuters, Andromeda Star’s current owner is Seychelles-registered. The tanker is engaged in Russia-linked trade.

Houthi militants have launched repeated drone and missile strikes in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab Strait, and the Gulf of Aden since November, forcing shippers to re-route cargo to longer and more expensive journeys around southern Africa.

They target ships with ties to Israel, the United States and Britain.

The Houthis on Friday said they downed an American MQ-9 drone in the airspace of Yemen’s Saada province.

Houthis have said they are acting in solidarity with Palestinians amid the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip. The Houthis, who control much of Yemen’s Red Sea coast, are part of an “axis of resistance” made up of Iran allies and proxies targeting Israel over its war against Hamas. The Houthis attacks have drawn reprisal strikes from the United States and Britain since January.

The Houthis have said they will continue their attacks until Israel ends its war in Gaza, which has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians there. The war began after Hamas-led militants attacked Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 people and taking some 250 others hostage.

Kejriwal says ‘My arrest classic case of how…’ in affidavit to Supreme Court.

According to Kejriwal, his “illegal arrest” during a campaign will give the ruling party in the Center an unfair advantage.

Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi, has responded to the Enforcement Directorate’s affidavit in the Supreme Court, stating that his arrest is a classic example of how the central government, led by the ruling party, has abused the ED and the PMLA to destroy the Aam Aadmi Party and its leaders, which is its largest political rival. “During an election cycle when political activity is at its highest, the petitioner’s (Kejriwal) illegal arrest has caused grave prejudice to the petitioner’s political party and will provide the ruling party at the Centre an unjust upper hand in the ongoing elections,” the reply said.

Gentleman Rahul Dravid won everyone’s hearts with his behavior at the voting center.

According to LiveLaw, Kejriwal stated in his response, “A level-playing field — which is a pre-requisite for ‘free and fair elections’ — has been compromised with the illegal arrest of the petitioner.”

There has been no proof or material to show that AAP received funds or advanced kickbacks from the South group — let alone utilizing them in the Goa election campaign, the chief minister said adding that not a single rupee was traced back to the AAP and ED’s allegations have no tangible evidence.

In its affidavit to the Supreme Court, the ED stated that Kejriwal’s actions convinced the investigating officer that he was guilty of money laundering. March 21 saw Kejriwal’s detention in connection with a money-laundering case involving the liquor policy of Delhi. So far in the case, Kejriwal has not received any legal redress.

The Delhi High Court dismissed Kejriwal’s plea challenging the arrest and said Kejriwal’s arrest can’t be deemed illegal as there was no contravention of the law. Kejriwal approached the Supreme Court against the high court order. The top court, on April 15, sought a response from the ED on Kejriwal’s plea challenging his arrest.

“Even on the date of the search during his interrogation, while recording his statement under Section 17 of the PMLA, he was avoiding answering questions by being evasive and non-co-operative even for simple non-incriminating questions,” the ED said.

Virendra Sachdeva claimed that the people of Punjab are also troubled by the quick corruption and development paralysis brought about by the AAP government, not just in Delhi.

Tech Mahindra Q4 results

The communications vertical’s weakness caused IT services giant Tech Mahindra to post a 41% decline in its consolidated net profit for the March quarter to Rs 661 crore on April 25. Despite this, the company’s CEO unveiled an ambitious three-year plan to boost margins and accelerate revenue growth.

Tech Mahindra CEO Mohit Joshi said the company hopes to come back to growth in H2 FY25. The company plans to onboard around 6,000 freshers this year.

The tech giant – which competes with the likes of TCS, Infosys, Wipro, and HCL Technologies – also spelled out a three-year plan to shore up the company’s revenue and margins.

Tech Mahindra’s consolidated net profit plunged almost 41 percent to Rs 661 crore for the quarter ended March 2024. For Q4 FY24, the revenue dropped by 6.2 percent year-on-year to Rs 12,871 crore.
