Indian Street Premier League: Rules and Format: Toss to Powerplay!

The main regulations that differ from regular cricket are the 50-over, street nine runs, and tape-ball overs, in addition to a special format of playing 11

Following comedian Munawwar Farooqi, who gained notoriety from Big Boss, taking out cricket superstar Sachin Tendulkar during the Indian Street Premier League (ISPL) T10, the league has gained immense popularity on the internet, particularly on social media platforms with short videos. However, that was only the first game on March 6, 2024.
The official tournament matches started the day following the celebrity-and former player-led unofficial game. The game’s regulations and the fact that street cricket is being played in a stadium have astounded and startled many.

Here are the major rules and format of the ISPL T10

Format

First of all the format- It is a 10-over-a-side Tennis ball cricket. However, there is provision for two overs of Tape Ball as well. We will discuss that later on.

Tip-Toe Toss

As the name suggests, the toss does not involve a coin, but rather the children’s game of tip-toe in which the two captains will tip-toe from a certain distance and whoever stamps on the tip of the toes of the other will win the toss and decides whether to bat or bowl.

Three overs of powerplay

In the 10-over game, there are not two but three overs of powerplay, In the first two overs, the number of players outside the 30-yard circle would be two. The third over of powerplay can be taken by the batting team at any moment they feel like, between overs three and nine. During the third over of the powerplay, three players can be allowed outside the 30-yard circle.

9 Street Runs

While in a normal cricket match, no matter how far the batter hits it outside the boundary the total number of runs remains six, but in an ISPL T10, if a better can hit the ball in the stands, it would account for nine runs instead of just six.

50-50 Over

Fifty is most probably the most unique feature of T10 where you are betting on your skills to give you one and a half times more than you score or lose half of what you have scored. So a batting team can take the 50-50 anytime they wish, however, the bowling team cannot ask for the Tape-ball over to be bowled during 50-50.

So in the 50-50 over the batting team will set a challenge of X number of runs and choose the bowler they want to bat against. Once that is done, if they score more than X, they will get X plus fifty per cent of X. So if the team had propped to get 16 runs and they got 18, they would get 18 plus fifty per cent of 16 which is eight. The total of that over would become 26 runs.

But if the team fails to get 16, and scores only 12 runs, then they would lose six runs from the 12 and the over would become a six-run over instead.

Tape-Ball Over

Popular in Pakistan street cricket, a Tape ball is nothing but a hard tennis ball taped entirely to make it swing a bit more than the usual tennis ball does. However, in ISPL T10, the tape-ball would not be hard tennis but usual tennis, with which the entire tournament is being played.

Playing XI and Substitutions

In the unique playing 11 rule, the team is given two substitutions in case of an injury. Also in the playing 11, a player each from the five zones of Indian cricket- North, South, East West and Central would have to be picked in the playing 11 alongside an Under-19 player from the pool of 16 players bought by each team in the auction.

Cabinet approves India AI Mission with Rs 10,372 crore outlay

The capital approved will be used to build high-end scalable AI ecosystem in public-private partnership mode.

AI Mission

In Short

  • Cabinet’s nod to India AI Mission with outlay of Rs 10,372 crore
  • Mission aims to build high-end scalable AI ecosystem
  • India AI Innovation Centre to be established under the mission.

The Cabinet on Thursday approved the India AI Mission with an outlay of Rs 10,372 crore for five years to encourage AI development in the country, Union Minister Piyush Goyal said.

The approved corpus will be used to build a high-end scalable AI ecosystem in public-private partnership mode.

“With an outlay of Rs 10,372 crore, one very ambitious India AI Mission that will encourage AI segment and ongoing research in this field…has been approved by the cabinet,” Goyal said.

The mission will be implemented through the IndiaAI Independent Business Division (IBD) under Digital India Corporation (DIC).

The minister, briefing reporters after the Cabinet meeting, said supercomputing capacity, comprising over 10,000 GPUs (graphics processing unit), will be made available to various stakeholders for creating an AI ecosystem.

The demand for GPU-based servers has increased as they can process data at a higher speed compared to CPU-based servers.

Startups, academia, researchers and industry will be given access to the AI supercomputing infrastructure established under the India AI Mission, Goyal said.

Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar on social media platform X said that AI is poised to be the kinetic enabler for India’s digital economy.

“This program will catalyse India’s AI ecosystem and position it as a force shaping the future of AI for India and the world. AI is one of the greatest inventions of our time, India will play a major role in shaping its future. That is ModiKiGuarantee,” Chandrasekhar said.

The minister said that the mission will benefit states like Kerala, which, for years, missed the bus in creating a robust tech ecosystem.

An India AI Innovation Centre (IAIC) will be set up under the mission. The IAIC will be a leading academic institution, ensuring streamlined implementation and retention of top research talent.

Funds approved by the Cabinet will enable IAIC to spearhead the development and deployment of foundational models, with a specific emphasis on indigenous Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) and domain-specific models, leveraging edge and distributed computing for optimal efficiency.

The financial outlay will fortify the India AI Startup Financing mechanism, facilitating streamlined access to funding for budding AI startups and catalysing their journey from product development to commercialisation.

“The proposal also includes funding provisions for industry-led AI projects aimed at fostering social impact, propelling innovation and entrepreneurship,” an official statement said.

A National Data Management Office will be set up under the mission that will coordinate with various government departments and ministries to improve the quality of data and make them available for AI development and deployment.

Working groups formed by the government on Artificial Intelligence (AI) have recommended setting up a three-tier compute infrastructure, comprising 24,500 Graphics Processing Units (GPUs).

At present, the US and China lead in computing infrastructure required for the development of AI technology.

According to the Top 500 website, top-performing supercomputers are located in the US, Europe, Japan, China, South Korea, and Saudi Arabia, where purchasing power parity is high.

As per the Top 500 list issued in November 2022, China had 162 supercomputers, followed by the US with 127, while India had three.

According to industry estimates, NVIDIA dominates the GPU market with about 88 per cent market share and there is a lag of 12-18 months in getting GPUs from the company due to its high demand across the globe.

The AI working groups have recommended setting up best-in-class AI computing infrastructure at five locations with 3,000 AI Petaflops computing power, with 15 times more capacity than the highest capacity installed at present.

The groups have recommended setting up an Inference Farm (2,500 AI PF) and Edge Compute (500 AI PF) systems.

The government has already spent Rs 1,218.14 crore in the last eight years to set up 24 PetaFlops compute capacity under the National Supercomputing Mission.

In the race to develop AI capacity, Microsoft provided Open AI with a USD 1 billion investment in 2019 and a USD 10 billion (about Rs 82,000 crore) investment in 2023.

IBM alone invested USD 6.5 billion (about Rs 5300 crore) in research, development and engineering to innovate in the field of AI, hybrid cloud and emerging areas, such as quantum in 2022.

Padmaja Venugopal, daughter of ex-Kerala Chief Minister, likely to join BJP

Padmaja Venugopal, daughter of Congress veteran and former Kerala Chief Minister K Karunakaran is likely to quit Congress and join BJP, according to sources.

Padmaja Venugopal

In Short

  • Padmaja Venugopal likely to quit Congress and join BJP
  • Padmaja deleted Facebook post dismissing reports suggesting her switching sides
  • Her brother, K Muraleedharan, says her switch would not benefit BJP even an ounce.

Padmaja Venugopal, daughter of late Congress stalwart and former Kerala Chief Minister K Karunakaran, is likely to quit Congress and join BJP, according to sources.

The speculation gained traction on Wednesday after Padmaja deleted a Facebook post dismissing reports suggesting her switching sides. Padmaja, about her potential move to the BJP, initially clarified that it was merely a joke but later removed the post, intensifying the speculation.

Meanwhile, her brother, and party MP K Muraleedharan on Thursday said that her decision was a betrayal and would not benefit the BJP even an ounce.

Muraleedharan said that their father, Karunakaran, had never compromised with communalism and for a member of his family to join the BJP was a sad outcome as far as people with a secular mindset were concerned.

“However, taking Padmaja will not benefit the BJP even an ounce. It will also not affect our determination to fight. We will push the BJP to third spot everywhere, including in seats where they hope to win. This betrayal would be answered through the EVMs,” the Congress MP said.

Padmaja was reportedly upset with the leadership sidelining her. She had contested from Thrissur constituency during the last Assembly election and lost to the left front.

“Padmaja was thrice given the party ticket to contest polls in Kerala and each time she had lost,” Muraleedharan said.

“So, the claims that others in the party were behind her defeat were not acceptable as there are many who have tried to do that to me. I have not complained about it because it is the people who decide who should win or not,” he said.

He further said that there was a time when he had to leave the party, but even then he did not compromise with the BJP and join it, even though it would have been very easy to do so, as his father was someone who never compromised with communalism.

Padmaja Venugopal’s entry would be a major boost to the BJP in the state, ahead of the April-May Lok Sabha elections.

Meet IFS officer, who left high-paying job to crack UPSC exam, took 3-year gap, now posted in…

IFS officer: Her first attempt in 2013 ended in disappointment, followed by another failed attempt in 2016, despite reaching the interview stage

Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Pujya Priyadarshini faced numerous setbacks in her pursuit of success in the UPSC exams. Despite failing thrice and contemplating quitting, the unwavering support of her family encouraged her to give it another try. Her journey embodies the adage that every success story is also a tale of great adversity.

Initially, Priyadarshini’s dreams of becoming an IAS officer seemed out of reach as she struggled through failures. After completing her B.Com in Delhi, she pursued a post-graduation in Public Administration from Columbia University in New York. During this time, she juggled her studies with work commitments, all the while preparing diligently for the UPSC exams.

Her first attempt in 2013 ended in disappointment, followed by another failed attempt in 2016, despite reaching the interview stage. Undeterred by these setbacks, she resolved to persevere. However, 2017 brought further disappointment when she narrowly missed success in the preliminary examination, leading her to consider giving up on her UPSC aspirations altogether.
