Himachal Pradesh cross-voting and Uttar Pradesh’s close race in the Rajya Sabha polls!

Himachal Pradesh: Rajya Sabha 2024 Polls: Rajya Sabha MPs are elected by MLAs through the proportional representation process with the single transferable vote (STV) system.

Rajya Sabha Election: The BJP is said to be banking on surplus votes from Ajit Singh’s Rashtriya Lok Dal.

New Delhi: Cross-voting in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party has been reported from Congress-ruled Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, where seven Samajwadi Party MLAs voted for the BJP, in polling for 15 Rajya Sabha seats across three states.

Here are 10 points on this big story

  • In Himachal Pradesh – where the Congress won 40 of 68 seats in the 2022 election and thought it had the support of three independent lawmakers – its candidate, Abhishek Singhvi is on the edge of a shock defeat. The BJP has only 25 MLAs in the hill state, but has benefitted from cross-voting by six Congress leaders and all three independents.
  • The BJP – which forced the Congress into a contest by fielding ex-Congress MLA Harsh Mahajan – is now the favourite to claim a Rajya Sabha seat many felt it could not possibly win. A defeat here for Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu will be a prestige loss.
  • In Uttar Pradesh, SP boss Akhilesh Yadav has said the decision to field a third candidate was a “test”. “Our third seat was actually a test to identify true companions…” he said this morning on X, in a swipe at rebel lawmakers who voted against his candidate.
  • There are 10 Rajya Sabha seats available in UP. The BJP – with 252 seats, as well as 18 from allies – has fielded eight candidates. The SP – which has 108 MLAs – has fielded three. The BJP only has votes to fill seven seats, but is believed to be counting on votes from the Jayant Chaudhary-led Rashtriya Lok Dal to upset its rival’s apple cart.
  • Seven SP lawmakers have cross-voted; this comes after a big shock to Mr Yadav early this morning, when his Chief Whip and four others were seen flashing ‘V-for-victory’ signs with the BJP’s RPN Singh and Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak.
  • The rebellion – Mr Yadav has claimed he sensed the mutiny and will expel the rebels – could not come at a worse time for the Samajwadi Party, which has just sealed a deal with the Congress-led INDIA bloc to contest 63 of UP’s 80 Lok Sabha seats.

Narendra Modi (Politician) Biography

  • Meanwhile, in Karnataka, the other state were voting has been forced, the BJP and its regional ally, the Janata Dal (Secular) faces off against the ruling Congress for four vacant seats. The JDS has fielded the fifth candidate – Kupendra Reddy.
  • The Congress has 134 MLAs, while the BJP has 66 and the JDS 19. The Congress also claims the support of two independent lawmakers. This should give it enough to retain the three seats it had before this round of polling, but the margin is narrow and, with the BJP forcing the issue by fielding a fifth option, preferential voting comes into play.
  • Apart from these, 41 seats have been filled unopposed. The list of new MPs includes former Congress boss Sonia Gandhi, BJP boss JP Nadda, and union ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and L Murugan, as well as ex-Congressman Ashok Chavan, now with the BJP.
  • Rajya Sabha MPs are elected by MLAs through the proportional representation process with the single transferable vote (STV) system. The MLAs have to list all candidates in order of preference. A candidate with the required number of first-choice votes is elected. If the threshold is not reached, the votes are transferred to the second, the third, so on.

Radhika Merchant was welcomed into the family by Nita Ambani with a beautiful silver Laxmi-Ganesh gift hamper. The hamper included two silver Tulsi pots with a silver incense stick stand and a Lakshmi-Ganesh idol set.

Radhika Merchant and Anant Ambani got engaged in January 2023 and on that day, the couple was gifted with a Bentley Continental GTC Speed worth around Rs 4.5 crore by Mukesh Ambani.

Mukesh Ambani (Indian Businessman) Biography

Bentley Continental GTC Speed is one of the most luxurious cars in the world and is owned by very few other celebrities including Virat Kohli, Aamir Khan, and Abhishek Bachchan, among others.

Many are unaware that Radhika Merchant, like her soon-to-be mother-in-law Nita Ambani, is a trained Bharatnatyam dancer. This can be the reason why Nita gifted Radhika her beautiful pearl and diamond choker which she wore at the cocktail ceremony of Mukesh Ambani’s niece, Isheta Salgaocar. Nita Ambani earlier wore the same neckpiece at Sonam Kapoor’s wedding reception.

PM Modi launches Multiple development Projects in Jammu, says ‘Article 370 was main hurdle’

Prime Minister Modi said Article 370 was the main hurdle in the development of Jammu and Kashmir.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for a slew of transformative projects worth ₹32,000 crore for Jammu and Kashmir. These initiatives span a diverse array of sectors including health, education, transportation, energy, and civic infrastructure among others.

During the event, the prime minister flagged off the first Electric Train in the valley and also the train service between Sangaldan station and Baramulla station. The commissioning of the Banihal-Khari-Sumber-Sangaldan section is significant as it features the usage of Ballast Less Track (BLT) all along the route providing a better riding experience to the passengers.

PM Modi also handed out appointment orders to approximately 1500 newly recruited government officials.

PM Modi, in his address to the gathering, expressed unwavering confidence in the potential of Jammu and Kashmir, vowing to fulfil the dreams of its people with the vision of ‘Viksit Jammu and Kashmir’.

“I have full faith in you and we will make ‘Viksit Jammu and Kashmir.’ Your dreams of 70 years will be fulfilled by Modi in the coming years,” he said.

Earlier, only disappointing news of bombs, kidnappings, and separation used to come from Jammu and Kashmir, but now Jammu and Kashmir is developing and moving forward,” the prime minister added.

Calling now-scrapped Article 370 of the Indian Constitution the main hurdle in the development of Jammu and Kashmir, PM Modi said the region is now moving towards overall development.

“Because of the abrogation of Article 370, I have asked people to help BJP win 370 seats and NDA win 400 seats in elections,” he said.

“I have heard that a film on Article 370 is going to be released this week… It is a good thing as it will help people in getting correct information.”

Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, Union minister Jitendra Singh and prominent BJP leaders including J-K unit president Ravinder Raina were also present at the event.

Sinha lauded the remarkable reduction in incidents of terrorism, citing a 75% decrease.

“The commanders of the outfits have been sent to their appropriate place (Jo bhi tanzeeme thi unke top commanders ko uchit jagah pahucha diya gaye hai). Now protest calendar is not issued, and stone pelting is now history. Markets, schools, and universities now remain open throughout the year,” the L-G said.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh credited the end of appeasement politics and the empowerment of marginalised communities.

“Appeasement politics ended after PM Modi came to power. Kashmiri Pandits, daughters of Jammu and Kashmir, Gujjars, Paharis and others got their rights. After removing Article 370, you proved ‘Modi hai to mumkin hai’,” Singh said.

Rahul Gandhi ‘taken into custody for 30-45 minutes’ in defamation case, gets bail, says lawyer!

The case was filed by a BJP leader for allegedly making objectionable comments against Amit Shah.

Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was on Tuesday granted bail by the Sultanpur court in a 2018 defamation case filed by BJP leader Vijay Mishra for the former’s remarks against home minister Amit Shah. The court took him into custody for 30-45 minutes, said his lawyer.

Speaking about Rahul’s bail advocate Santosh Pandey said, “He (Rahul Gandhi) surrendered in the court today. He surrendered and the court took him into custody for 30-45 minutes. After that, his bail application was submitted and was accepted (by the court)… The further date has not been given yet. His lawyer said that he is innocent and he has not made any defamatory statement…”.

Pandey further said that Rahul Gandhi could be given a maximum punishment of 2 years if sufficient evidence was found against him. Rahul was granted bail by Judge Yogesh Yadav after filling bail bonds.

The defamation case was filed against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for allegedly making objectionable comments against Shah at a press conference in Bengaluru on May 8 that year. Amit Shah was the BJP president when Gandhi made the remark. Rahul Gandhi attacked the BJP and said that the party claimed to believe in honest and clean politics but has a party president who is an “accused” in a murder case.

Reacting to the development Mishra told ANI,”I was the vice president of BJP when this incident happened. Rahul Gandhi had accused Amit Shah in Bengaluru that he is a murderer. When I heard these allegations, I felt very pained because I am a 33-year-old worker of the party. I filed a complaint regarding this through my lawyer and this continued for almost 5 years…”

“The BJP is the biggest party of the country. Calling its (then) president a murderer is unjustifiable,” he added.
