‘Bad boy’ Shoaib Malik will divorce Sana Javed someday and marry X: Taslima Nasreen!

Sania Mirza’s family confirmed on Sunday that Sania and Shoaib have been legally divorced for some months!

Writer Taslima Nasreen said Shoaib Malik does not need to divorce and can have four wives at the same time.

Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen has commented on Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik’s marriage to actor Sana Javed and said if he believes in Islam, he does not even need to divorce and can have four wives at the same time. “I thought they (Shoaib Malik- Sania Mirza) were happy couple. I was wrong. How could Sania Mirza an intelligent girl had married such a bad boy! I think Shoaib Malik will divorce Sana Javed someday & marry X. Then he will divorce X and marry Y. Then he will divorce Y and marry Z. If he believes in Islam, he does not even need to divorce, he can have 4 wives at the same time,” the author, a staunch critic of Islam, wrote on X.

On Saturday, Shoaib Malik announced that he married Pakiatn’s popular actor Sana Javed in Karachi triggering speculations over whether he divorced Sania Mirza. Sania’s family confirmed that following Islam’s Khula, Sania initiated unilateral divorce proceedings.

Sania’s sister Anam Mirza on Sunday confirmed that Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik have been legally divorced for some months. “Sania has always kept her personal life away from the public eye. However, today the need has arisen for her to share that Shoaib and she have been divorced for a few months now. She wishes Shoaib well for his new journey ahead!” Anam posted on Instagram.

“At this sensitive period of her life, we would like to request all fans and well-wishers to refrain from indulging in any speculation and to respect her need for privacy,” the statement said.

Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik got married in 2010 and have a five-year-old son Izaan who lives with Sania Mirza in Hyderabad. For days, there were speculations over Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik’s troubled marital relationship.

The Pakistan Daily reported that none of Shoaib Malik’s family members attended the wedding of Sana and Shoaib. Shoaib’s sisters have expressed concerns over his divorce with Sania Mirza and said Sania was tired of Shoaib Malik’s extramarital affairs, the news outlet reported.

Foods that are just as harmful to the liver as alcohol!

1. The liver detoxifies the body and metabolizes the nutrients

Maintaining a healthy liver is crucial for overall well-being, as the liver plays a vital role in detoxification, metabolism, and nutrient storage. While alcohol is widely recognized as a liver-damaging substance, several everyday foods can also contribute to liver damage when consumed in excess. Here are a few foods that, when not consumed mindfully, can silently sabotage your liver health.

2. Beverages that are loaded with sugar

junk food

Highly sweetened beverages, such as sodas and energy drinks, are loaded with fructose, a type of sugar that, when consumed excessively, can lead to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Excess fructose is converted into fat, which accumulates in the liver, potentially causing inflammation and liver damage.

3. Processed and packaged foods

packed food

Many processed foods, including snacks, chips, and fast food items, are high in trans fats, refined sugars, and excessive salt. These ingredients contribute to weight gain and can lead to insulin resistance, fostering the development of NAFLD and other liver-related issues.

4. Red meat and processed meats

Red Meat

Diets high in red and processed meats have been associated with an increased risk of liver diseases. Processed meats often contain additives and preservatives that can be harmful, while the high levels of saturated fats in red meat can contribute to liver inflammation and damage.

5. Foods loaded with hidden salt

loaded food

A diet high in sodium can lead to fluid retention and increased blood pressure, both of which are detrimental to liver health. Chronic liver diseases, such as cirrhosis, can be exacerbated by excessive salt intake.

6. White bread, pasta, and rice

pasta

Refined carbohydrates, such as those found in white bread, pasta, and rice, have a high glycemic index and can cause rapid spikes in blood sugar levels. This can contribute to insulin resistance and the development of fatty liver disease over time.

7. Artificial sweeteners

Artificial sweeteners

While marketed as a healthier alternative to sugar, artificial sweeteners may have negative effects on the liver. Some studies suggest that artificial sweeteners can alter gut bacteria, leading to metabolic disturbances that may impact liver function.

8. Milk products rich in fat

Milk products

Certain high-fat dairy products, especially those containing saturated fats, can contribute to liver inflammation and damage. Moderation is key, as excessive consumption of these products may increase the risk of liver-related complications.

9. Canned foods

canned food

Canned foods often contain high levels of added preservatives and chemicals. The lining of many cans also contains bisphenol A (BPA), a compound that may contribute to liver problems when consumed in excess.

10. Low-quality cooking oils

cooking oil

Certain cooking oils, such as those high in omega-6 fatty acids, may contribute to inflammation when used in excess. Opting for healthier cooking oils, like olive oil, can be a better choice for liver health.

Meta joins the AI race against competitors Microsoft and Google, with plans to develop “human-level” AI shortly!

After Google and Microsoft, Meta is also joining the race to develop super AI, in an attempt to incorporate ‘human tendencies’ in it.

With Microsoft leading the space of artificial intelligence across the globe with OpenAI, rival firm Meta is also planning to join the AI race. The prime goal of Meta is to develop “super AI”, creating it to reach the same level as humans.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, in an interview with The Verge, said on Thursday that his company is joining the pursuit of creating super artificial intelligence, with an aim to create AI that can problem solve and rationalize on the same level as humans.

Artificial general intelligence or AGI is the oft-stated goal of OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT, and is the central pursuit by the AI departments at Google. Through its developmental goal for AGI, Meta is expected to directly compete with tech giants Google and Microsoft.

Zuckerberg talked about how Meta has employed the best engineers to work towards expanding their presence in AI, and their primary goal is general intelligence.

“We’ve come to this view that, in order to build the products that we want to build, we need to build for general intelligence,” Zuckerberg told The Verge. He further added, “I think that’s important to convey because a lot of the best researchers want to work on more ambitious problems.”

AI has become the new rage with big tech companies after Microsoft-backed OpenAI and its chatbot ChatGPT blew up, creating a competitive sector. The prime competitors in this space remain Microsoft, Google, Elon Musk’s new startup xAI and now, Meta.

Google, according to tech media The Information, is keeping its researchers from being poached with stock compensation while OpenAI lures top staff with multimillion-dollar pay packages.

Job cut fears triggered by AI

While it continues its research on general intelligence (AGI), Meta has already released its AI model Llama 2, and Zuckerberg said his teams were working on a next version. The chatbot of Llama 2 has been made available to the public by the company.

Meanwhile, the rapid development of artificial intelligence has triggered fears in the industry regarding major job cuts in the future. Google has already fired hundreds of employees this year, with more layoffs on cards for 2024.

Further, Microsoft-backed HumaneAI has cut a massive chunk of its workforce in January 2024, just before the release of its first-ever product, a wearable AI pin.

Meta has not made any prominent job cuts in the year till now, but big tech companies overall have laid off 7500 employees just in the first three weeks of January 2024, triggering fresh fears on how AI could replace humans in the workplace.

Under-19 World Cup: The hunt begins for India’s next Virat Kohli!

Can the India Under-19 batch of 2024 join the prestigious class of 2000, 2008, 2012, 2018 and 2022?

Earlier this week, a young man from Karnataka grabbed the consciousness of the average Indian cricket fan, upstaging even Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Not yet 19, Prakhar Chaturvedi ripped the record books to shreds, scoring a monumental unbeaten 404 in the final of the all-India Under-19 tournament for the Cooch Behar Trophy. That his exploits came in the title clash, and against Mumbai who received a dose of their own medicine, brought it into starker focus.

Chaturvedi might be the current Under-19 flavour, but don’t be surprised if more names grab the limelight in the next three weeks. Names like Uday Saharan. Arshin Kulkarni. Aravelly Avinash. Musheer Khan. Raj Limbani. Saumy Pandey.

These are among the young men tasked with leading India’s charge at the Under-19 World Cup, starting in South Africa today (January 19). Saharan is the skipper, Kulkarni and Avinash have already bagged IPL contracts, the others have gradually made their presence felt over the last few months, ready to take on the world even as Chaturvedi, who missed out on World Cup selection, eyes a graduation to a more senior level in domestic cricket – he has already been picked in the Under-23 side and could make his Ranji Trophy debut in the next few weeks.

The World Cup is the showpiece event at the Under-19 level, but as Rahul Dravid took great pains to point out during his four-year stint as the India Under-19 and ‘A’ coach between 2015 and 2019, it is no more than a means to an end. “I am not a big fan of judging these boys on the basis of results alone,” he told this writer not long into his tenure. “A few years down the road, few will remember whether someone was a part of the Under-19 World Cup-winning squad. They will only truly be recognised when they make the senior side and perform; that must be the ultimate goal, not just winning the Under-19 World Cup.”

It’s hard to fault Dravid’s philosophy but try telling an Under-19 kid approaching the biggest tournament of his life that it doesn’t really matter if he comes home victorious or not.

Like they have for the last several editions, India will approach this latest World Cup as among the strong favourites to go all the way. Perhaps not as strong as in the past, primarily because the pandemic scuttled domestic age-group cricket for two full seasons and therefore prevented the natural progression of the Under-16 cricketers who would have organically advanced to the Under-19 team, but still strong enough that other teams will cast a wary eye on them. India have made the finals in each of the last four editions, winning in 2018 and 2022, and while the pressure of history might weigh on Saharan and his boys, it shouldn’t really impact their performances when they get out on the park.

One of the reasons why India remain a dominant force at the junior level too is the quantum, and quality, of cricket they are exposed to from Under-16s upwards. There is so much organised cricket, much of it by the BCCI itself, that one would have to be extraordinarily unlucky to not get enough opportunities or to slip through the cracks. Greg Chappell, the Australian legend, once told me that India’s Under-19 lads are ‘almost finished products’ by the time they play for the country at that level because they have played so much so regularly compared to players in other countries, not least his own. It speaks to the robustness and vibrancy of the system which, contrary to popular public opinion, doesn’t merely pander to the high and the mighty.

This season alone, in the lead-up to the Under-19 World Cup, the inter-state one-day Vinoo Mankad Trophy was followed by a Challenger Series, then a quadrangular tournament featuring two Indian teams alongside Bangladesh and England. The boys then travelled to the UAE for the Asia Cup, where they lost in the semifinals to Bangladesh, and arrived in South Africa more than three weeks before their first World Cup encounter, playing the hosts and Afghanistan in a tri-series in which they remained unbeaten.

The quality of opportunities, therefore, better prepares them to tackle the challenges a tournament like the World Cup will throw up. None of these is a guarantee for success, needless to say – one need not look beyond the senior team for validation of that assertion – but if Saharan’s boys emulate Yash Dhull’s Class of ’22 and hold the trophy aloft on February 11 in Benoni, it won’t be by accident, you know.

Budget 2024: What is Interim Budget? How is it different from full-year Budget?

Sitharaman clarified that the February 1, 2024, Budget would only serve to meet the government’s expenditure until a new government is formed due to the upcoming elections!

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is slated to present the interim Budget for the fiscal year 2024-25 on February 1. This Budget will serve as a provisional financial outline until the new government is formed after the general elections, with the full budget expected in July 2024.

Sitharaman emphasized that this Interim Budget would not include any “spectacular announcements” but would be a “vote on account.” A vote on account, or Interim Budget, is a customary practice before elections, outlining anticipated receipts and expenditures for the transitional period until the new government takes charge.

In contrast to a comprehensive full-fledged Budget, which encompasses all aspects of government finances and outlines economic strategies for the entire fiscal year, an Interim Budget is more focused on immediate financial requirements during the transitional phase. Major policy announcements are traditionally avoided during a vote on account, although there is no constitutional prohibition against substantial announcements.

The Interim Budget, also known as a ‘vote on account,’ functions as authorization for specific expenditures necessary until a new government assumes office. However, the Election Commission of India imposes limitations to prevent undue influence on voters. The government is restricted from proposing significant taxes or policy reforms during this budget to ensure fairness in the electoral process.

Sitharaman clarified that the February 1, 2024, budget would only serve to meet the government’s expenditure until a new government is formed due to the upcoming elections. Prior to a vote on account, governments refrain from presenting the customary pre-budget ‘Economic Survey,’ which traditionally accompanies the full budget presentation in July. The Economic Survey provides insights into the economic state and key events.

According to Article 116 of the Constitution, a vote on account signifies an upfront allocation from the ‘Consolidated Fund of India,’ specifically designated for addressing immediate expenditure needs. This fund includes all revenue generated by the central government, such as taxes and interest on loans. Typically effective for two months, a vote on account can be extended if necessary.

Oil Companies may cut Petrol, diesel Prices by ₹5-10 next month!

“Fueling Hope: Potential Price Relief as Oil Companies Consider Slashing Petrol and Diesel Prices by ₹5-10 Next Month!”

OMCs may consider a reduction of ₹5- ₹10 per litre in petrol and diesel rates after the release of Q3 results.

 Petrol, diesel Prices

State-run oil companies could consider reducing the prices of petrol and diesel next month after they release their third quarter results, which are likely to show their net profits together surpass a record ₹75,000 crore even as their costs of acquiring crude oil soften, three people aware of the matter have said.

The public sector fuel retailers have held prices since April, 2022, and officials say a thorough pricing review is imminent, with the companies possibly sitting on margins of ₹10 per litre that can be passed on to consumers. The move could help soothe inflation and become significant ahead of the 2024 General Elections.

“Due to higher marketing margin on sale of fuels, the three OMCs (oil marketing companies) posted significant net profit in Q1 and Q2 [of FY2023-24] and the trend will continue in Q3. After results by the end of this month, they may consider reducing petrol and diesel rates between ₹5 and ₹10 a litre, keeping some cushion for future spike in international oil prices. A decision will be taken by the companies in consultations with their stakeholders,” one of the people said, asking not to be named.

The government is the promoter and majority stakeholder in all the three OMCs. So far, combined net profit of the three firms in first half of 2023-24 was ₹57,091.87 crore, over 4,917% jump from ₹1,137.89 combined net profit for the entire financial year of 2022-23.

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) announced it will declare its Q3 results on January 27, while the other two firms – Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) — are expected to make announcements around the same time.

Also Read : It took PM Modi’s leadership to lift 25 crore Indians from poverty”: Union Minister Chandrasekhar takes jibe at Congress’ ‘Garibi Hatao’

IOC, BPCL and HPCL did not respond to an email query on this matter.

An email query on this matter sent to the petroleum ministry did not elicit any response.

While the ministry controls public sector OMCs, it has held that the three firms are free to change pump prices of fuel. The OMCs enjoy monopoly in domestic fuel retail business with over 90% market share and influence pricing of private retailers.

India’s retail inflation increased marginally to a four-month high of 5.69% in December 2023. Although the upward movement was mainly because of higher food prices, the government would take all efforts to keep it low, certainly below the Reserve Bank of India’s upper tolerance limit of 6%, a second person said, asking not to be named.

According to data, OMCs froze petrol and diesel rates on April 6, 2022 amid volatility in international oil prices, while the central government reduced excise duty twice (by ₹13 on petrol and ₹16 on diesel) to protect the consumer when average crude purchase prices (Indian basket) surged from $73.30 per barrel in December 2021 to $112.87 a barrel in March 2022, and further to $116.01 a barrel in June 2022.

Data analysed by HT showed that from the following month, July 2022, average oil prices of the Indian basket began falling and dipped below $100 in August 2022 ($97.4 a barrel). By March 2023 it fell to $78.54, and barring two months of 2023-24 – September 2023 ($93.54) and October 2023 ($90.08) – it never crossed up $90, helping OMCs make good net profits in first two quarters.

Since September 2023, oil prices moderated — $83.46 a barrel in November and $77.42 in December 2023. Even in the current month (January 2024), the 15-day average is $77.8 per barrel.

Experts say that downtrend in fuel rates persists because of lower crude oil prices, which is visible in other deregulated fuel products. “PSU OMCs have lowered domestic ATF [aviation turbine fuel] price by 4% MoM for Jan-24 to Rs102/ltr (in Delhi), largely on account of a decline of ~USD5/bbl in crude oil prices. Brent is currently trading at ~77/bbl levels, thereby pointing to further price cuts,” a research report of Emkay Global Financial Services said.

There is also a gradual decline in windfall tax on exports of diesel from ₹6 a litre since September 2023 to zero. The levy on petrol was removed since July 20, 2022 and on ATF from March 4, 2023.

The tax on domestically produced crude oil was also reduced to ₹1,700 per tonne from Tuesday due to softening of international oil prices, a gradual reduction from ₹23,250 per tonne when it was first imposed on July 1, 2022.
