Xiaomi Smart Band 8 Pro review

There was a famous difference between smartwatches and smartbands a few years back. The band was a small wrist wearable with extra features like a weather app and timer, in addition to measuring basic vitals like heart rate and steps. A cursory glance at the Xiaomi Smart Band 8 Pro reveals that, while the band’s design has changed to resemble a wristwatch, its features have not kept up with the times.

Specifications of the Xiaomi Smart Band 8 Pro

  • Display: 1.74″ AMOLED touchscreen, 336 x 480 px resolution, 60Hz refresh rate, 600 nits peak brightness

  • Battery: 289 mAh
  • Colors: Black, Light Grey
  • Dimensions:46 x 33.35 x 9.99mm
  • Weight: 22.5 grams without strap

With a few small spec improvements, Xiaomi’s most recent Pro Smart Band maintains the same straightforward style as its predecessor. The highlights are a somewhat larger screen and a somewhat larger battery, but are they enough to justify it over the standard Band 8 or its direct rivals from Amazfit and Huawei?

Design

With a rectangular chassis and metal lip, the Xiaomi Band 8 Pro has the same fundamental design as the Band 7 Pro. The 1.74-inch AMOLED panel has a resolution of 336 × 480 pixels and a refresh rate of 60 Hz. The Band 8 Pro sports a Gorilla Glass 3-reinforced screen and can reach up to 600 nits of peak brightness, as opposed to 500 on the Band 7 Pro. The display can be easily used even in strong sunshine, and if you’d rather, you can set it to automatically dim.

Once more composed of plastic, Xiaomi gave the case a more upscale appearance and feel by adding a metal lip to the side. The Band 8 Pro is available in light gray and black. Xiaomi decided on a brand-new TPU strap design that fastens to the Band 8 Pro’s body using a unique quick-release system. It appears more robust than the Band 7 Pro’s mechanism from the previous year, which had some problems with attachment point reliability.

Because the strap doesn’t have a conventional belt buckle, putting the Band 8 Pro on your wrist first requires much more effort. The Band 8 Pro weighs only 38 grams (22.5 grams without the strap), making it comfortable to wear all day and all night. Although the absence of physical buttons is already standard, having a power/back button would still be helpful. This is especially true with the Xiaomi Band 6.

Features

The Band 8 Pro has the same 24/7 heart rate monitoring, SpO2 tracking, sleep and stress monitoring, and activity tracking functions as the Band 8 and Band 7 Pro. With the integrated dual-band (L1 and L5) GNSS satellite receiver, you can track more than 150 sports activities and keep track of your runs even when you’re not carrying your phone.

The Band 8 Pro, like all Xiaomi smart wearables, has a wide variety of watch faces available on the Mi Fitness app, providing ample options to suit any fashion preference. The Band 8 Pro has twice as much watch face storage as the Band 7 Pro, with up to 14 watch faces at once.

features

Certain watch faces have several adjustable complications that can also be used as shortcuts for apps. By holding down the watch face on the home screen, you can adjust their colors as well. The Always on Display (AOD) feature on the Band 8 Pro allows for the replication of some first- and third-party watch faces on the AOD screen, while the other watch faces display one of the four pre-installed AOD themes.

The rudimentary RTOS on the Band 8 Pro is fully swipe-based. You receive a set of repositionable card-based widgets that you may arrange into up to four groups. A list app layout or a grid app layout are your options. There are no third-party apps, just 23 built-in ones. Although units supplied in China come with an NFC receiver, our international version does not. Two further noteworthy
